Ubuntu Installation :: Windows 7 Lost On Update To 10.04?

Jun 3, 2010

When I try booting windows from grub, I get nothing but a black screen, and blinking cursor. I have succedeed in locating the issue - when I have updated from 9.10 to 10.04, grub asked where he was supposed to install itself - apparently, this does bad things to NTFS boot sectors.

I've tried the testdisk fix, that apparently solves the problem for most people, to no avail. I tried recovering through the Win7 disk too, and, eerily, that only succeded in killing the mbr too, forcing me to reinstall grub from the livecd.

sudo fdisk-l says this:

Code:
Disco /dev/sda: 1000.2 GB, 1000204886016 byte
255 testine, 63 settori/tracce, 121601 cilindri
Unit = cilindri di 16065 * 512 = 8225280 byte3

Ubuntu Installation :: Lost Windows Entry In Grub After Update

Jul 9, 2010

Ubuntu's update manager recently updated the Grub menu.lst file. It let me decide if I wanted to keep my old menu.lst or the new one. After deciding that I was fine with the new one, I found out that I can no longer boot into Windows 7. I had previously edited menu.lst so that Windows would be at the top of the list, however, I didn't notice that this had put it into the automagic update area, and I realize now that I should have just edited what the default number was instead of moving around the entries.

Anyways, I can no longer access my Windows 7 OS via Grub, and I was wondering what sort of fix I can have for this. I've tried running update-grub, but it hasn't fixed the problem. The Windows bootloader is on the first partition of the only hard drive, as far as I can remember.

Ubuntu Installation :: Lost Dual Boot With 10.04 And Windows 7

Apr 6, 2011

How can I get my dual boot working again? I had a dual boot with Ubuntu 10.04 and windows 7. It was all well tweaked but I was annoyed with the ugly boot menue with old kernells so I decided to install BURG loader and remove some of the old kernells. So I did and after that I have not been able to reach my Ubuntu boot.

After multiple attempt to restore the old kernells and reinstall grub (through a USB live stick) i couldnt log in to either system (following the steps in this support thread [URL] Finally i mamanged to get my windows 7 working but my boot menue only shows memtest and windows 7 (not Ubuntu). I am affraid to tamper around to much and having a non funtional lap-top in the end. My lap-top still "miss" 40 GB that was set aside for the Ubuntu boot.

Ubuntu Installation :: Grub2 Lost Everytime Windows Boots?

Jun 10, 2010

I have a dual boot system with Lucid Lynx and a Windows 7 that came with the laptop (it's a Dell Studio with an i3 processor).

Grub2 boots into Win7 and Ubuntu just fine. The thing is that if I choose Win7, next time Grub doesn't show up. I can't boot anything and the screen turns black. I can reinstall grub2 with Ubuntu's live CD and the cycle starts all over again, it's very annoying.

These facts may or may not be important: I think that this started happening when I uninstalled wubi after being able to install ubuntu through another method When reinstalling grub there's an error that repeats through many lines of the terminal (I can't remember what it says, if you think it's important I can check). Anyway, it ends up saying the installation finished successfully.

Ubuntu Installation :: 9.04 - Lost Grub Legacy In Windows Reinstall

Jun 19, 2010

I dual-boot ubuntu 9.04 and windows 7. I recently reinstalled windows, and it wiped grub-legacy off of my MBR. Reinstalling grub shouldn't be tough, right, especially with clear instructions? Anyway, I can't get anywhere with the official instructions here: [URL]. The first issue is that the current live CD has no program "grub" in terminal. I dug up an old live cd, but I couldn't get anything with the directions:

Find where Grub is. If this gives a few different answers then you will need to find the correct one, perhaps by trial-and-error.
find /boot/grub/stage1
That command didn't find anything, nor did some similar commands found on google.

So I'm really at a loss. What should I do?
-Can I install Grub 2 on my MBR? Will that work with 9.04?
-Can I access my 9.04 install, copy files to Windows, and then just format the partition and clean install 10.04?

Ubuntu Installation :: Lost Windows 7 Boot Option In Grub - Error 12: Invalid Device Request

Jan 12, 2011

I had a working dual boot Ubuntu 10 and Windows 7. Anyways long story short, I got it working again but have lost the boot option for windows 7. If i run fdisk -l, I get the following.

root@support-Latitude-E6400:/home/support# fdisk -l

I installed gparted and can see that windows 7 is installed in dev/sda6. In another forum, i read that someone had to edit their menu.lst so i did with the following.

When i try to boot from windows 7, i get the following error. Error 12: invalid device request. How can i get my laptop to boot from windows again?

Ubuntu Installation :: Can't Boot Windows 7 After Grub Update

Jul 21, 2010

I have been phenomenally unlucky with Ubuntu as seen my my post history and decided to dual boot.

I set it all up with a clean install, when I tried to load Windows from Grub the computer restarted. After much headache I managed to set it up correctly (when it wouldn't load from Grub I booted from the Windows CD and clicked on "Repair computer" and it finally worked).

Now I am having the same problem as before--I think my installed all the updates from Update Manager and it included a grub one. Now I can't load Windows from the grub menu: It goes to the Starting Windows screen and then reboots my computer. If I do it again it gives me an error message and an option to perform "Startup repair". When I try to do Startup Repair, the computer reboots after a few loading screens.

So I tried what worked before and put in my Windows 7 CD, and clicked on Repair Computer. BUT NOW it gives me an error message somewhere along the lines of system restore is not compatible with my installation of Windows, and to insert a compatible recovery CD. This is the ONLY Windows CD I have (legitimate copy).

Over the course of this migration experiment I have installed and reinstalled both operating systems 7-10 times total. I'd rather not do it again. My poor laptop is probably wondering what the heck.

I can't stick with Ubuntu alone because my wireless doesn't work with it, my grad school files are not completely compatible with open source software, and I can't play the games I'd like to. So I must have the option to at least dual boot into Windows.

When selecting Windows it restarts the computer entirely to the Compaq screen, not just to the Grub menu, if that matters.

Ubuntu Installation :: Online Update To 10.04 - Loss Of Windows Boot?

May 2, 2010

Machine: Win2000 Pro, AMD64 Athlon 2GHz, 2x80Gb HD, 2 GB RAM Symptoms: Running 9.10 with dual boot no probs for ~ 1 year. Decided to upgrade online via synaptic to 10.04. Upgrade went well no warnings, etc. On reboot all OS options present in Grub BUT clicking on Win2000 causes the screen to blank temporarily and then return to the Grub menu ie. no functioning Win2000 boot option. Ubuntu 10.04 boot yields blank screen with flashing cursor, a sudden stream of IO error messages (can't capture it but the lines look identical) then screen flickers and I'm at the purple log in screen and everything proceeds perfectly from there.

Observations: For the first time on any of my ubuntu installs (i've been using since 8.04 always installing from CD though) grub installation asked where I wanted it. In fact, the screen shows all devices with check boxes wth which to make my choice. That is sdb, sdb1, sdb2, ... , sda, sda1, sda2, There was a message that says that if in doubt install on _all_. Being in doubt I checked all the boxes: sdb, sdb1, etc. I noted in the message streams that followed after i continued that some lines had "... this is BAD ..." but since it was all rolling along very quickly no idea exactly _what_ was bad.

Action: I am not a linux newb but I am a grub newb. I fished the forums and googled only to come completely confused about what the problem might be or what to do. Example: have i overwritten my win bootloader? is my mbr corrupted? if i remove grub what will happen? if i remove and reinstall grub will i get windows booting back? if i use my win2000 install CD will it overwrite my whole disk (as many warn) or can i just fix the mbr? if I do the latter what order do i ie use fix mbr then fix boot? The info i've come across so far either doesn't address what happened to me, deals with other OSs (XP, Vista), or is applied to earlier editions of grub/ubuntu. Right now I have not found a clear step by step that addresses my circumstance. Would anyone be able to provide some guidance? I need the windows boot to run some software (Matlab) that btw will not work with XP/Vista (hence the reason i still have win2k).

Ubuntu Networking :: Lost Wireless After Update

Jun 13, 2011

after giving me no problems whatsoever (currently 10.04 Lucid Lynx) I lost wireless connectivity on my laptop after the following updates were processed yesterday:

Commit Log for Sun Jun 12 16:18:28 2011
Upgraded the following packages:
dkms (2.1.1.2-2fakesync1) to 2.1.1.2-2ubuntu1
flashplugin-installer (10.3.181.14ubuntu0.10.04.1) to 10.3.181.22ubuntu0.10.04.1
flashplugin-nonfree (10.3.181.14ubuntu0.10.04.1) to 10.3.181.22ubuntu0.10.04.1

[Code].....

but as it all worked fine before and this was just an update not an upgrade I suppose drivers etc are all OK anyway.

Also, rfkill showed nothing was blocked to need unblocking, and ifconfig gives a permissions error

I have a wired connection operating without any problems at all.

Ubuntu Installation :: After Update, Windows 7 No Longer Auto-Detected By GRUB2?

Apr 23, 2011

I'm using Maverick Meerkat, 10.10, 64bit. I'm a pretty basic user but am trying my best to learn.

My background: I have a laptop on which I installed Win7 Ulimate on one partition. After installing Win7 I then installed Ubuntu on a separate partition. GRUB2 found both Win7 and Ubuntu perfectly. I could choose to boot into either one and the ability for GRUB2 to "remember" which OS I booted into last worked properly. I then did a kernel update a couple days ago via Ubuntu's Update Manager. After that, GRUB2 could no longer see Win7. I added a custom boot entry in /etc/grub.d/ so that Win7 would show up in GRUB2.

However once Win7 did show up in GRUB2 I kept having a problem with the Windows bootloader being missing. I used the Win7 Recovery DVD to get into Windows and then installed EasyBCD for Win in which I was able to create a Win7 boot entry and get the Win7 bootloader back. I set EasyBCD to skip the bootmenu so my current configuration now is that on bootup I see GRUB2, which shows Maverick Meerkat & Win7. If I select Win7 then Win7 loads via EasyBCD and it works fine.

The problem though is that GRUB2 does not auto-detect Win7 AND it no longer remembers the last OS that I booted into. I would rather not use EasyBCD if I can help it and would like to just use GRUB2 for everything.

My question is this: How can I get GRUB2 back to controlling Ubuntu & Win7 properly without the need for anything else in between. I have asked in the Freenode Ubuntu channel but haven't received any help besides "sudo update-grub" which I have done and it hasn't helped.

Fedora :: Lost GUI After Update

Jan 21, 2010

I updated my computer Wednesday (01-20-2010) and excluded three mesa... files and one xorg... file. I had recently read that people were having problems with these particular updates and I wanted to address them separately (to isolate any problems I may have). I think I may have screwed things up by accidently including the libdrm file. This file was previously missing for the mesa updates. The update I did included several plymouth... files also (don't know if it matters). Now I have a black screen with a cursor, after the fedora (charge) logo completes.

If I hit Ctrl-Alt-F2 I can get a login prompt. I logged in and tried to go back and update (as root) the four files I had excluded, hoping to fix the problem. Now I am getting the following errors during the yum update. The first two lines are repeated several times. I can't scroll back to see what's at the beginning.
