I'm about to receive a new Zotac MAG MAGHD-ND01-U and I'm wondering if perhaps it would be smarter to install UNE instead of the standard distribution. The computer will be used almost exclusively as an HTPC using Boxee. I've read that UNE has atom optimized code; that along with a smaller footprint may speed up the overall system.

If you really want to learn C/C++, get set up on a Linux box with a full gcc dev system. I fixed up an old P4 Machine with 2gig ram and 80gig HD to install Linux on. Don't know anything about Linux yet but installing several distros for evaluation, but a thought occured to me. Is there a particular distro that has this "full gcc dev system" in the initial install or is this something that I will have to install after the OS is up and running on the machine? Is one distro better suited for programming than another?

View 14 Replies View RelatedI have a linux box set up as a multi-purpose server for my home with three Windows client PC's. The linux box is based on a slightly modified Slackware 9.0 distribution using Linux 2.4.20 and an unfortinately old, slow AMD processor with a miserable 512Kb RAM. The linux box serves the CIFS file system to the Windows boxes, runs the SQUID HTTP proxy, the Apache web server, a print server, does masquerading, mail serving and a very effective firewall using iptables.
This system, although slow, has run perfectly for several years.Let me say that again - This system works perfectly.I had decided that now is the time to upgrade the hardware, so I bought a Gigabyte LGA775 motherboard which has two 1Gb network interfaces on it, an ASUS 256Mb PCI-E display card, 2Gb of DDR3 RAM, an Intel Core2-Quad processor and a bunch of 500Gb SATA drives to set up a RAID5 array (but I intend that the system boot off one of several 40Gb PATA drives I have).I set up the processor, motherboard, display card, RAM, a SATA DVD Drive and a 40Gb PATA hard disk in a "breadboard" layout and installed distro 13.1, being careful to set up the static IP for the local network, dhcpcd to get an IP address from the cable modem (my internet connection) and to enable ip_forward in the network configuration.
Then I installed a script invoked by /etc/rc.d/rc.local which installed all the SAME iptables rules as my old Linux box. There was one minor glitch when I had to change 8 occurrences of "-d ! $LOCAL_NET to" "! --destination $LOCAL_NET" but that was no problem. I also set up /etc/resolv.conf, /etc/hosts , the BIND server files etc. etc. exactly as in the old box.
I am able to ping mirror.aarnet.edu.au (this is at the heart of Australia's internet hub network - if it's down the whole bloody thing is down) and have the system find the correct IP from the designated nameservers and contact that server with a return trip time of 35ms. I am able to run a telnet session from one of the Windows boxes and edit files on the Linux server. So both network interfaces work and I've got them the right way around.I am able to run FTP on one of the Windows boxes and connect through to mirror.aarnet.edu.au, although it seems to hang when I try a DIR (but then so does the old linux system).
I installed Ubuntu Lucid Lynx a while ago. but then upgraded it to 10.10
I don't have the CD with me right now and i need to fix some mistakes of mine (being a n00b to ubuntu) urgently i.e. i can't wait for morning. Is there anyway i can rollback to the time when my ubuntu installation was in mint condition?
One more thing. Let me tell you my mistake. Almost a month ago i installed Apache2 on my Laptop (for LAMP). and now i have to install Apache Tomcat for JSP development. but the problem is that the files made by Apache2 and the PHP5 installation i made are not removed with

Until then, I will have to defect back to Windows.
I disconnect my internal Windows hard drive first. Then run the installer from the Desktop CD. Everything works great.This is approximately the steps I take: I reboot, everything is good. I reconnect my internal hard drive, boot to Windows, reboot back to Kubuntu, everything is still good. I run updates and follow the instructions of the Comprehensive Multimedia & Video Howto. I reboot again, still no problems. At this point, I figure everything is OK and I have no worries. I boot to Windows and do some work in that environment. The next time I boot to the external Kubuntu hard drive, I get the following errors:

have tried to replace WindowsXP with ubuntu netbook 10.10 on my Acer Aspire one (model ZG5), I opted for erasing the disk completely to just have ubuntu on the machineit runs perfectly from the USB drive, but will not boot up after a full installation, I just get a black screen with flashing underscore cursorthere are several threads about this problem but I cannot glean a solution, I have used 2 downloads as I thought the first iso might be corrupted, but still cannot get the system to start upwhat is the next step, is it worth persevering or trying an alternative distro?

OK, I've tried to install:Mint 6, 7 XFCE, and 8jolicloudeasypeasyand probably another or two..Oh, I'm installing this on my Acer Aspire One 751h, so I am using a USB key and UltraISO, with the exception of jolicloud, which has its own USB creator, and most recently I tried Mint 6 using UNetBootIn.Anyway, I keep getting the same general error, but with different files... Sometimes its errno5: input/output error, and other times its parts of a file (blah/doowop/dadada/video....) I don't know if its a driver problem or what, but I've seen video, sound, and other random stuff.. each time it gives a different one though.Either way, the main paragraph in the window talks about having a dirty CD, needing to replace my hard drive, or burning a new CD at a slower speed... I've checked the md5sum, and that's not the problem.
I'm wondering if my problem is that I'm creating the USB from one computer, and then trying to install it on the 751h. Another thing that might be causing the problem, but I doubt, is the fact that when I set up the partition, I select "use entire disk". Another question, Does it make a difference if the drive letter changes? On our main computer, the USB is mapped to drive E:, but on the 751h, it shows up as D:. If I have to change it on the 751h, how can I without an OS? when trying to install linux, it wiped out my windows, and I don't feel like re-installing it just to change it in a few minutes.
I have a laptop running 8.04LTS very well and have been keeping it up to date. I'd like to have the ability to re-install 8.04 at a later time if I had to reformat the laptop. I have the latest 8.04 CD image (8.04.2 I think) but of course there have been many updates since then. Is there a way for me to capture all these updates so that I can reapply them at a later time after a fresh install of 8.04?

View 1 Replies View RelatedI'm using 3 monitors over a pci-e 9800GT and an agp 7600GS and have no problems under Windows 7, except i can't have Ubuntu (which i really miss). I tried installing Ubuntu and pretty much every other distribution multiple times.. with no luck so far. Wubi, CD, USB.. none of them worked for me. Right before the first step in the installation, all the screens go haywire, displaying all kinds of shapes and colors and everything seems frozen.
None of this ever happened back when i only had 2 screens and i really need the 3rd one (actually thinking of a 4th since i got a slot left.. maybe for movies or stuff while i'm working). I found topics of people with similar problems, only they were reffering to whatever happens while inside ubuntu or whatever.
I appologize if this has already been posted but there are 1001 pages here and I did do some searching - I'm just soooo tired by this point. This whole linux thing is starting to lose it's luster. I've never used linux before and wouldn't know how do deal wtih command line anything - whether its understanding what the system generates or entering it.
For the last 3 days I've tried to install, first - xubuntu, then openSuSe, then ubuntu desktop on my desktop unit then to run ubuntu netbook live on my laptop with the intent of doing a permanent install (if I could see I would be able to get everything working right by trying live first).
So I follow the instructons given on the ubuntu site, using the universal usb creator - it tells me that the operation was successful or something like that. So I proceed to 'attempt to' boot from usb but I find out my bios (on the laptop) does not support booting from usb (go figure!). So I go get this thing called PLoP, burn the .iso to a cd, put the cd in my drive and the usb inserted in the computer too and I reboot and enter my boot menu, select to boot from the optical device (my cd with PLoP on it) and use PLoP to select and boot from usb. Ubuntu runs for a bit I get past the logo with the status bar under it, then I get all this techo whatchamo spit out at me on the screen. Don't know what it means, just know it means I won't be enjoyin any Ubuntu tonight. Very sad.
I did manage to type in help and hit enter and in the list of commands given I noticed one that I though was interesting. "exit" So I put in exit and hit enter and it spit out a bunch more stuff at me. I only mention this because that is what is in the pictures I've attached. One pictures is before entering "exit" (on the laptop) and the othe after entering "exit" (on the laptop). There is also one that shows the screen from my desktop (after entering "exit"). I tried to run Ubuntu live one last time on it right after my last laptop fiasco; and, if you notice, some of the same information is given between the desktop and laptop. (matching infromation between the machines is after entering "exit" on both machines).
I attached the pictures and specs on my laptop hoping they may be useful. I've done all I know how and I'm just starting to get really tired here. If I wasn't so sick of Windows I'd have probably given up by now. I just can't bring myself to blame Ubuntu though. I am certain that Ubuntu is fine. Its either, first, user error, or somthing with my machine. Just that Ubuntu says the same thing about both machines. Hope someon can help. Sorry for the long post.

I would like to remove Mint and recover that space for Ubuntu, but since I installed Mint last, I think it is "in charge" of the grub bootloader, so I figured if I just expanded the ubuntu partition then I would lose the bootloader and not be able to log into anything. Is this the case? what is the best way to remove mint while still preserving the grub menu.
So this morning i booted Xubuntu in an effort to replace Fedora 15, basically just getting a feel for all sorts of different distros. although it was slightly more confusing that the others i've tried on install because i had to manually configure partitions, and prompt didn't give a description really of which was which, so i took a shot in the dark at which was fedora to overwrite, and hoped i didn't remove win7 so all went well, but it appears Fedora is still in my system, using roughly 50GB still, it won't boot. but it is in the boot menu, and i can see it from Xubuntu. Can i remove this to add that bit of space to my new distro? or would i have to reinstall xubuntu Seems to be mostly just old folders and such, but it's being shown as a device. I don't see it in Gparted i don't think.

View 2 Replies View RelatedI've got a frustrating problem. I have a Dell SC440 machine that's worked perfectly for me for a couple years. Up until a few months ago I dual-booted Windows 7 and Ubuntu 9.04 with Grub, with absolutely no problems. I upgraded to Ubuntu 9.10 and the new kernel, and the new kernel refused to boot - if I selected it in Grub it would lock up. I could, however, still boot into the old linux kernel.
I killed and recreated the partition, and I've tried to install Ubuntu 9.10 from scratch. It gets past the initial boot screen, but locks up immediately after. The exact same thing happens for Fedora 12, OpenSolaris 2009.06, and Vector Linux. I can't install in text-safe mode (or its various other names) either. LiveCD doesn't work.
The funny thing is that Ubuntu 9.04 still installs and loads just fine, and also runs the live CD. GParted boot-CD works fine. These two seem to be the only bootable CDs that work for me.
Suggest the best distro for a fresher ?

The other day I was trying to install Ubuntu 9.10 on my mom's old system (not too old, has vista on it) and even from the live cd it wouldn't boot. Then I tried 8.04 because I know that works on my XP system. However it would freeze during boot but at least showed that it was booting (the bar was starting to fill).

Since we bought it it's been upgraded to 2 GB of ram and has a nVidia 8400gs video card and a belkin wireless adapter now. I can't understand why the live cds won't fully boot since my single core 2.2Ghz boots just fine with 8.04.
I was thinking of trying 6.06 to see of that might work. However I was unsure if the system is capable of running Ubuntu and might need Kubuntu or another distro.
I have a laptop dual booted with Win 7 and Fedora. I want to replace Fedora with Ubuntu. Is it safe to simply delete all the non-ntfs partitions during the Ubuntu install? I just don't want to whack Windoze as I depend on it ofr work. THe current partitions are code...

I have tried resetting the CMOS/BIOS etc and it's not the Power Pack, tried two!
The machine is a Fujitsu Siemens Desktop with 3GB RAM, decent graphics etc...
I've tried KDE distros and don't like them as much and really want to get back to a Gnome environment.
So I have my netbook triple-booted with Windows XP, vanilla Ubuntu, and Kubuntu Netbook (Installed in that order).
I however would love to remove Kubuntu Netbook from my computer, but unfortunately, since I installed it last, it is the Linux OS that owns the current default GRUB files that the BIOS reads first.
Can someone please tell me what to do to remove the Kubuntu partition and restore the default GRUB to my vanilla Ubuntu so I can still use my computer? I've done this incorrectly before and freaked myself out because whilst trying to access the GRUB, my computer couldn't find it because the partition that the files were originally on was gone. Haha. I don't even know how it got fixed.

Needless to say, my Linux kernel is now wasted. what is the best way to proceed? I would like to get theOS going again, without losing any of my data or files. I also have a Windoze partition on that HD, which needs to be preserved.

Last time I tried (right as 11 came out) I had horrible graphic errors during the install, problems install grub2-efi, and then even when I got everything installed I had graphic errors on boot up that rendered the install worthless. I think I am going to have to go to a different linux distro, which I am not really that happy about, but I need linux on this computer. know experiences with ANY linux distro and recent EFI motherboard installs.
