Ubuntu :: Use Two Different Desktop Environments?
Apr 5, 2010I have installed Kubuntu 9.10 on my old laptop, and tho the graphics are nice, the performance is not spectacular.
Here's my system - humble but not too lousy either
CPU: Intel Pentium M 1.80GHz
Memory: 512MB
Graphics controller: ATI RV350 (Mobility Radeon 9600 M10)
So, I thought I'd like to test out other desktop environment, without too much bells and whistles, I am considering Xfce.
But I lack deeper Linux knowledge in order to complete this without messing up my system.
1) how to install the secondary DE properly, without hurting the existing DE?
2) How much duplication takes place, when one installs the secondary DE. Ie, will I need to reinstall, say, Firefox for the other DE? I guess KDE and Xfce definitely have different desktop managers, network managers, etc, so there will be some overhead because of this. Will I be able to install new apps and enjoy using them in both DEs, will their configs be the same?

Apr 29, 2010I imagine this question is hard to answer and will get very few takers but I am hoping someone will be able to help. Has anyone ever done a cost analysis of video production facilities that use Linux vs Windows vs OS X?
My company use Final Cut on OS X to edit video, Photoshop on Windows or OS X for photo editing and Nuke on Linux for visual effects composting. We have multiple computers running in this configuration but have not looked deeply into how to achieve maximum value for our money.
Mac's can cost up to four times as much as a comparable Windows machine but save on electricity over the course of their life and have better software for our workflow. Linux machines are even cheaper as they use the same electricity as Windows but the OS is free. Unfortunately, Linux does not have Photoshop, or a good video editor. Gimp does not support opening PSD files, which as used extensively in production environments. Basically my question is has there been any studies done on this subject?
Ubuntu :: Switching Between Desktop Environments Without Logging Out
Mar 21, 2011I have both xmonad and Gnome installed and tend to switch between them quite often. Normally, I need to log out and log back in which is starting to become annoying because I need to open any running applications again.I have tried using "Switch User", but it doesn't work. I go to the switching screen when I am logged into Gnome and log in again after selecting Xmonad, but it brings me back to my Gnome session.
So is there any way to log in as the same user with two different desktop environments at the same time?
Ubuntu :: Switching Between Desktop Environments KDE & Unity?
May 12, 2011currently i run both KDE and Ubuntu Unity 11.04 on my machine. I have encountered a little problem when switching desktop environments. With KDE, i prefer to use KWin as my windows manager (since i find it highly polished), and with Unity, compiz (not by choice). The problem is that if i don't switch the windows manager to compiz before switching over to unity, all hell breaks loose. Same with switching over from Unity to KDE.
The only solution i have found is to switch to Classic Ubuntu. and use the compiz fusion icon to select the windows manager in order to avoid any problems.
when i log onto the either KDE or Unity, how can i load the correct desktop environment in case it crashes (which it has)?
Note: this has also become a concern to me because of 11.10 removing the classic gnome. If the proper window manger can be loaded before entering the preferred desktop environment KDE, Gnome3 or Unity,

Aug 7, 2010I'm finalizing the the dual-boot addition that I recently completed. I've added lubuntu to the LT3114u Netbook that I use. That's done, now I'm migrating my user environment back from the Cygwin one that I've been using on Windoze, as of late. One of features that's been useful has been the global environment management possible with the windoze UI functions. As I coded my emacs environment while 'over there' (windoze side), I included a check for the lisp library repository path environment variable EMACSLOADPATH. It is globally available when one logs in, and does not get set in any user scripts, or dot files any to do with CYGWIN or emacs.
While it has been easy enough to set EMACSLOADPATH for the login shell environment, via .bashrc, .profile, and system wide via /etc/profile, I have not been able to have '/usr/bin/emacs23' have EMACSLOADPATH set when invoked via the LXDE UI. Thus, it would appear that emacs is not being initialized with the same environment that any of the shells are (old school?). Thus, what is it that one must update in order to have GNU emacs initialized with the same environment variables as bash? Or, put another way, why aren't the environment variable defined in /etc/profile, ~/.bashrc and/or ~/.profile ending up in the initialized environment upon invocation of emacs23 on lubuntu Linux?

Sep 6, 2010I have a linux box set up as a multi-purpose server for my home with three Windows client PC's. The linux box is based on a slightly modified Slackware 9.0 distribution using Linux 2.4.20 and an unfortinately old, slow AMD processor with a miserable 512Kb RAM. The linux box serves the CIFS file system to the Windows boxes, runs the SQUID HTTP proxy, the Apache web server, a print server, does masquerading, mail serving and a very effective firewall using iptables.
This system, although slow, has run perfectly for several years.Let me say that again - This system works perfectly.I had decided that now is the time to upgrade the hardware, so I bought a Gigabyte LGA775 motherboard which has two 1Gb network interfaces on it, an ASUS 256Mb PCI-E display card, 2Gb of DDR3 RAM, an Intel Core2-Quad processor and a bunch of 500Gb SATA drives to set up a RAID5 array (but I intend that the system boot off one of several 40Gb PATA drives I have).I set up the processor, motherboard, display card, RAM, a SATA DVD Drive and a 40Gb PATA hard disk in a "breadboard" layout and installed distro 13.1, being careful to set up the static IP for the local network, dhcpcd to get an IP address from the cable modem (my internet connection) and to enable ip_forward in the network configuration.
Then I installed a script invoked by /etc/rc.d/rc.local which installed all the SAME iptables rules as my old Linux box. There was one minor glitch when I had to change 8 occurrences of "-d ! $LOCAL_NET to" "! --destination $LOCAL_NET" but that was no problem. I also set up /etc/resolv.conf, /etc/hosts , the BIND server files etc. etc. exactly as in the old box.
I am able to ping mirror.aarnet.edu.au (this is at the heart of Australia's internet hub network - if it's down the whole bloody thing is down) and have the system find the correct IP from the designated nameservers and contact that server with a return trip time of 35ms. I am able to run a telnet session from one of the Windows boxes and edit files on the Linux server. So both network interfaces work and I've got them the right way around.I am able to run FTP on one of the Windows boxes and connect through to mirror.aarnet.edu.au, although it seems to hang when I try a DIR (but then so does the old linux system).

Aug 12, 2011is it would be possible create a Ubuntu dvd that contains the ubuntu server desktop and alternate install opptions, as well as all four main desktop environments (gnome, kde, xfce, lxde) and unity. since much of the data is redundant between each version cd's it would probably all fit on one disk. then all that would be needed is two disks one for 32 bit and another for 64 bit. i really think that this could work.

Feb 13, 2010OK, I've tried to install:Mint 6, 7 XFCE, and 8jolicloudeasypeasyand probably another or two..Oh, I'm installing this on my Acer Aspire One 751h, so I am using a USB key and UltraISO, with the exception of jolicloud, which has its own USB creator, and most recently I tried Mint 6 using UNetBootIn.Anyway, I keep getting the same general error, but with different files... Sometimes its errno5: input/output error, and other times its parts of a file (blah/doowop/dadada/video....) I don't know if its a driver problem or what, but I've seen video, sound, and other random stuff.. each time it gives a different one though.Either way, the main paragraph in the window talks about having a dirty CD, needing to replace my hard drive, or burning a new CD at a slower speed... I've checked the md5sum, and that's not the problem.
I'm wondering if my problem is that I'm creating the USB from one computer, and then trying to install it on the 751h. Another thing that might be causing the problem, but I doubt, is the fact that when I set up the partition, I select "use entire disk". Another question, Does it make a difference if the drive letter changes? On our main computer, the USB is mapped to drive E:, but on the 751h, it shows up as D:. If I have to change it on the 751h, how can I without an OS? when trying to install linux, it wiped out my windows, and I don't feel like re-installing it just to change it in a few minutes.

Dec 7, 2010I'm using 3 monitors over a pci-e 9800GT and an agp 7600GS and have no problems under Windows 7, except i can't have Ubuntu (which i really miss). I tried installing Ubuntu and pretty much every other distribution multiple times.. with no luck so far. Wubi, CD, USB.. none of them worked for me. Right before the first step in the installation, all the screens go haywire, displaying all kinds of shapes and colors and everything seems frozen.
None of this ever happened back when i only had 2 screens and i really need the 3rd one (actually thinking of a 4th since i got a slot left.. maybe for movies or stuff while i'm working). I found topics of people with similar problems, only they were reffering to whatever happens while inside ubuntu or whatever.
Ubuntu Installation :: Distro On 2 Computers 4 Different Distros Tried On One Of Them?
Mar 21, 2011I appologize if this has already been posted but there are 1001 pages here and I did do some searching - I'm just soooo tired by this point. This whole linux thing is starting to lose it's luster. I've never used linux before and wouldn't know how do deal wtih command line anything - whether its understanding what the system generates or entering it.
For the last 3 days I've tried to install, first - xubuntu, then openSuSe, then ubuntu desktop on my desktop unit then to run ubuntu netbook live on my laptop with the intent of doing a permanent install (if I could see I would be able to get everything working right by trying live first).
So I follow the instructons given on the ubuntu site, using the universal usb creator - it tells me that the operation was successful or something like that. So I proceed to 'attempt to' boot from usb but I find out my bios (on the laptop) does not support booting from usb (go figure!). So I go get this thing called PLoP, burn the .iso to a cd, put the cd in my drive and the usb inserted in the computer too and I reboot and enter my boot menu, select to boot from the optical device (my cd with PLoP on it) and use PLoP to select and boot from usb. Ubuntu runs for a bit I get past the logo with the status bar under it, then I get all this techo whatchamo spit out at me on the screen. Don't know what it means, just know it means I won't be enjoyin any Ubuntu tonight. Very sad.
I did manage to type in help and hit enter and in the list of commands given I noticed one that I though was interesting. "exit" So I put in exit and hit enter and it spit out a bunch more stuff at me. I only mention this because that is what is in the pictures I've attached. One pictures is before entering "exit" (on the laptop) and the othe after entering "exit" (on the laptop). There is also one that shows the screen from my desktop (after entering "exit"). I tried to run Ubuntu live one last time on it right after my last laptop fiasco; and, if you notice, some of the same information is given between the desktop and laptop. (matching infromation between the machines is after entering "exit" on both machines).
I attached the pictures and specs on my laptop hoping they may be useful. I've done all I know how and I'm just starting to get really tired here. If I wasn't so sick of Windows I'd have probably given up by now. I just can't bring myself to blame Ubuntu though. I am certain that Ubuntu is fine. Its either, first, user error, or somthing with my machine. Just that Ubuntu says the same thing about both machines. Hope someon can help. Sorry for the long post.

I would like to remove Mint and recover that space for Ubuntu, but since I installed Mint last, I think it is "in charge" of the grub bootloader, so I figured if I just expanded the ubuntu partition then I would lose the bootloader and not be able to log into anything. Is this the case? what is the best way to remove mint while still preserving the grub menu.

Jun 7, 2011So this morning i booted Xubuntu in an effort to replace Fedora 15, basically just getting a feel for all sorts of different distros. although it was slightly more confusing that the others i've tried on install because i had to manually configure partitions, and prompt didn't give a description really of which was which, so i took a shot in the dark at which was fedora to overwrite, and hoped i didn't remove win7 so all went well, but it appears Fedora is still in my system, using roughly 50GB still, it won't boot. but it is in the boot menu, and i can see it from Xubuntu. Can i remove this to add that bit of space to my new distro? or would i have to reinstall xubuntu Seems to be mostly just old folders and such, but it's being shown as a device. I don't see it in Gparted i don't think.

May 17, 2011So I just updated my IdeaPad to Natty and played around with Unity. The performane was absolutely unbearable so I installed Unity2D from the software center. Now when I start the session everything seems to be fine at first. Whenever I move the mouse over the panel though it seems to switch to my old gnome-panel from the "Classic" session (with some missing icons). When I move the mouse over that panel again it switches back to the Unity panel style. What is going on? Can I fix this somehow? I will have to use the classic session until I get a working consistent behavior
