Ubuntu Installation :: Upgraded To Win 7 - Cannot Access Partition

Sep 12, 2010

I installed Ubuntu using the WUBI.EXE installer and everything worked fine until I forgot to uninstall Ubuntu before I upgraded to Windows 7 Ultimate. Now I am running Windows 7 and cannot access Ubuntu or get rid of it. So I have a partition on my harddrive with memory I cannot access. I want to somehow get rid of Ubuntu and give that memory back to Windows. [I can see the Ubuntu boot option but I cannot access it]. Upon selecting the Ubuntu option (Windows is the boot manager BTW) I get this message.....

Windows failed to start. A recent hardware or software change might be the cause. To fix the problem:
1. Insert your Windows installation disc and restart your computer.
2. Choose your language settings and click "next."
3. Click "Repair your computer"
If you do not have this disc, contact your computer administrator or manufacturer for assistance.

File: /wubidr.mbr
Status: 0xc000000f
Info: The selected entry could not be loaded because the application is missing or corrupt.
However Windows Runs fine, I just cannot access Ubuntu.

I recently upgraded to ubuntu 10.04 from 9.10. I now have grub 1.98 and my problem is that when i select windows xp from grub it just goes to a black screen with a white flashing line. If i boot ubuntu it does the same thing for about five seconds then ubuntu loads right up. I hit e on windows xp in grub and this is what came up.

insmod ntfs
set root='(hd0,2)'
search --no-floppy --fs--uuid --set 7a841c73841c33db
drivemap -s _hd0) ${root}
chainloader +1

I then hit c on windows xp and entered each line on its own and the only error was this. error unknown argument '--fs-uuid'

Ubuntu Installation :: Unable To Access New Partition

Feb 15, 2011

I've created few new ext4 partitions and weird things started to happen.First I couldn't open neither the new partitions nor my USB pen drive even though they were listed under "Places". Nautilus simply wouldn't open. After some time it resolved itself and I could open all of them. But then I couldn't create a new folder nor copy any files to that partitions (error: permission denied).

Ubuntu Installation :: 11.04 Beta/LTS - Access To Second Partition Denied?

May 2, 2011

My laptop is a STAMP, 1.6GHz, P4, RAM 1GHz, onboard Intel sound/video etc. There were two partitions, C: drive and D: drive. I had Ubuntu 10.10 and no other O/S installed.

I installed 11.04 Beta from a Live CD Alternate last week and have since upgraded a couple of times to what must now be the LTS. Lots of good stuff and it's why I'm a committed user. I have two problems:

In the install, I kept the two, almost equal partitions (each about 36GB) as well as the Swap of about 3.3GB. The previous format had been Ext4 and NTFS; I now reformatted and made them both Ext4.

The C: has of course all the system and apps, with the basic folder structure HOME, etc. In trying to set up certain programmes to 'Save to' the D: - or indeed just trying to copy/move anything into it, I get: - "Error ... Access denied. Could not write to ... etc. OR ... etc does not exist"!

I've checked under the 'System/Administration/Users & Groups/ Users Settings/Group Settings. For Root, I've entered myself - who should have anyway had Administrator privileges. Also rebooted, but still no change.

What must I do to get use of my D: drive?

Fedora Networking :: Upgraded Etherenet Cards / Unable To Access VPN And Web Host

Oct 5, 2009

I'm running a Fedora 10 box behind a Comcast cable modem that provides squid and mail services to 15 XP and Vista workstations. I upgraded the ethernet cards on our Fedora box to support our new 1 gigabyte network. I kept the same device configuration eth0 and eth2 by updating the /etc/udev/net persistent file and changing the ethernet hardware address in the respective ifcfg-eht files in the /etc/sysconfig/network-scripts. The box booted to the new cards, the route and ifgonfig shows the new cards and their hardware addresses, the configuration looks as how the old cards looked (eth0 and eth2 respectfully). I was able to browse the local network and have access to the internet as before from inside the network . However I cannot get access to our web server that serves our web host and our VPN services from ouside our network. I tried stopping the firewall and still could nor connect from outside the network.Could my old ethernet hardware address be hard coded somewherel?

Fedora Installation :: Format A Windows Partition So Can Easily Access It?

Jan 22, 2011

My old computer came with two disks, with Windows XP on one. I installed Fredora on the other.
I also resized the c: partition on the first disk and added a second partition which I formatted as fat32.
I then mounted that partition with its entry in /etc/fstab such that I could write to it as myself.

I have a new computer, 64 bit and running Windows 7, which I want to organize roughly the same way. I will install Fedora 14 on its seond disk. I've shrunk the c: partition under Windows using Disk Management. I want to create a 100 Gb D: partition on the same drive in the remaining space, and I want to be able to access both c: and D: for reading and writing by root and I want to be able to access the d: drive for reading and writing also by myself. Since it is a 64 bit machine, my choices for formatting the d: drive are HTFS or exFAT. Does it matter which I choose so that I can do what I want? How does Fedora treat exFAT?

Can anyone remind me which packages I need to add in order to be able to read NTFS file systems from Fedora? Can I also write to such a file system as root?

Can I write to such a file system as myself if I mount it properly?

Sometimes Linux just make you want to throw the PC out of the window, and get a new one with WINDOWS on it...Having only just "got" the idea that there are a nunber of ways of issuing chmod, I now find that there is yet another when in the fstab file. It is an easygoogle to find out a workaround to make this drive RW, but doing that way one does not learn what is actually happening.how do I find out UID and GID? fmask and dmask, how do I find out what the current settings mean, and what they should be to allow RW access for various groups/users or for everyone?

Ubuntu :: Swap Partition Access / Cant See That Partition

May 21, 2011

I've recently just installed ubuntu 11.04 but seem to have made a big mistake. During the install process I was asked to specify a location to be used for swap. Not really understanding what this meant I chose another partition on my drive with some free space but also a lot of my data. Needless to say I now cant see that partition. Is there anyway for me to access it? or to at least recover the information I need from there? its about a 200gig partition, and it used to be ntfs.

Ubuntu Installation :: Upgraded To 10.04 And It's DOA?

Nov 12, 2010

The software manager has been nagging me to upgrade from 9.10 to 10.04 for some time now. I finally gave in and clicked on Upgrade. After the upgrade completed, my computer won't start. It just flashes Ubuntu for a split second and goes to a black screen. I happen to have the 10.04 CD from Canonical, and I tried that, and it won't launch the installer either; just a logo and a black screen. Since I can't even get to the terminal to diagnose and fix whatever's wrong, I'm installing 9.10 from the CD that I ordered from Canonical a long time ago. I went through all the graphical options just like the first time I installed 9.10, and it's in the process of installing right now.

I don't really have time to futz with it because I need my laptop for when I go and visit my mum for Thanksgiving. Maybe I'll try after the holidays if I can get some feedback on what might have gone wrong with 10.04.

Ubuntu Installation :: Upgraded 9.10 To 10.04 Now Cannot Boot

May 27, 2010

I upgraded 9.10 to 10.04 and now it won't boot. The way 9.10 used to boot was after turning on the computer it would go through the bios screen and then a screen would come up and list both operating systems, Windows Xp and Ubuntu. XP would be highlighted and would normally boot if I did not change the highlighted area. If I changed the highlighted area to Ubuntu it would boot into Ubuntu 9.10. Now after doing the upgrade, it gets to the same screen with the two operating systems listed.

When I change the highlighted to Ubuntu an error message is briefly displayed and then it goes back to the screen that lists both operating systems. I think the error message says something like couldn't find Ubuntu, or something similiar to that. Windows XP runs fine when I highlight Windows XP in that first screen, but I want to be able to run Ubuntu. I have Ubuntu on a secondary drive, but shouldn't it have rewritten the upgraded files on that same drive that had 9.10 on it?

Ubuntu Installation :: Upgraded To 10.04 But Cannot Use Kernel 2.6.32-22.32+

Jun 20, 2010

I had upgraded to 10.04 but can not use kernel 2.6.32-22.32+, I had to go back to kernel 2.6.31-21. because of the default video driver had change from the one kernel to the other, and I do not know how the correct it. In 2.6.32-22 the font would change and to a smaller size and I can barely view anything because it looks like some two year old puke a box of crayons all over the screen.

Second issue is it does not matter what power-saving mode I am in, in 5 minutes time it with go into suspension. Or right after coming out of hibernate, it will go into suspension indefinitely and no coming out of it and must to a hard boot.

Ubuntu Installation :: Upgraded From 10.10 To 11.04 And Now Can't Boot?

May 17, 2011

I upgraded from 10.10 to 11.04 via the update manager and somehow in the middle of it, the package failed. And so I carried on using the ubuntu, rebooted and now the disk is not ready and cannot mount. Press S to skip or M for manual recovery. Skip does nothing, only can use manual recovery.I tried everything from the ubuntu forums & google from other people who had the same problem. The problem is my root terminal on manual recovery doesn't have networking.Only can use liveCD which I still can't connect to the internet because I use wlan0 from ndiswrapper.

I am a dual booter of Ubuntu 10.10 on one partition and Windows XP on other. I edited the grub to boot those. One HDD is partitioned into 2 drives so one partition holds XP and the other partition is a "translator" that holds files which both ubuntu and XP can access. (don't ask me why, I cleaned the dust off my PC recently after 3 years )My outputs are:

/boot/grub/menu.lst

Code:
title LINUX - Ubuntu 10.10 - kernel 2.6.35-28-generic
root (hd1,0)
kernel /boot/vmlinuz-2.6.35-28-generic root=UUID=85de06c5-cf3e-46b8-8c14-2c217be8dd9d ro vga=0x317 splash
initrd /boot/initrd.img-2.6.35-28-generic[code]....

- I commented the UUIDs, that doesn't work.

- I tried remounting it, no effect.

- I fsck'ed it, no effect.

- I booted using LiveCD but cannot connect to the internet due to wireless.

- Cannot apt-get update & upgrade due to no internet.

That's all I remember cos I basically tried alot different ways and cannot get it to boot.I am thinking of formatting the mess and start all over again but I don't really want to do that because it is a good system, just that the grub file and fstab is kinda cluttered.

Ubuntu Installation :: Upgraded To 9.10 And Now At A Dead Screen?

Jan 12, 2010

I've got a toshiba A135 series. I installed 9.10 from a live cd, and the installation process went fine.

When I rebooted the computer, it loaded up giving me the option to select one of the following:

Ubuntu, Linux 2.6.31-14-generic
Ubuntu, Linux 2.6.31-14-generic (recovery mode)
Memory text (memtest86+)
Memory test (memtest86+, serial console 115200)

I chose the first one, hit enter and the computer went to a black screen with the cursor up in the top left corner blinking away. Then nothing. I've read that this distribution is giving folks a lot of trouble. Has anyone had this same thing happen to them after a clean install?
