How do i choose a previous Kernel without a GRUB?? I have a netbook with only Ubuntu (UNR) installed so every time i update my kernel and so on i cannot see/choose the kernel version i want (i believe it enters the most recent one by default). Is there a way to do that without a grub or i have to install it even if i dont have a second OS?

I am currently using Ubuntu Lucid on my desktop (stats are in my signature). I have an older computer, with an Intel i8xx chipset as my graphics card. This has had some instabilities on the previous two Ubuntu releases for me (10.04 and 9.10) which I am hoping will be fixed for Maverick, but thankfully the Ubuntu Wiki managed to provide me with fixes.
After much tweaking and some luck, I was able to get Ubuntu to work without constantly crashing on kernel versions 2.6.32-21, 2.6.32-22 and 2.6.32-23. Unfortunately, when 2.6.32-24 and 2.6.32-25 came out, I was unable to cease the crashes.
While I am still looking into tweaking the latest kernel version to work perfectly, I would like to know if there was a way for Ubuntu to default boot into a kernel other than the latest. This is because I want to run 2.6.32-23 by default (the latest kernel that I have tweaked properly) until I can configure 2.6.32-24 and 2.6.32-25 as well. I have less computer-savvy family members that use my desktop as well, and it would be a pain for them to have to press shift at every boot and have to select the correct kernel.
In Ubuntu 11.04, grub skips directly to booting Ubuntu. I can't choose which kernel image it loads. Why is that and how can I fix that?

View 6 Replies View RelatedI've built a system with windows 7 on one hard drive and Ubuntu 10.04 64bit on the other, and would like to choose OS on startup using Grub. I installed each OS with only that drive connected in isolation. I then connected both drives and pointed the bios startup at the Ubuntu drive. sudo os-prober sees the windows 7(loader) and sudo update-grub has given the windows option on startup. However, when i choose windows in Grub I get 'error: no such device' and 'error:invalid signature'. Windows starts ok when the drive is chosen from the BIOS.

I have looked for existing threads on this issue, but found no matches, so I am starting a new one.I first installed Ubuntu 9.04 on my laptop from a bought CD last year. When I later installed the kernel updtates with the Update Manager, I noticed the the list of versions growing when I booted up. Then something horrible happened. After installing maybe the third or fourth kernel update, I couldn't boot into Ubuntu, it failed every time. After that I left Ubuntu broken on my laptop for a while.I have now reinstalled from the CD again However, I am now very wary when it comes to installing even the important security updates, never mind the recommended ones! I prefer to keep it simple, because I don't want to do any more reinstalls for a while. So far I have just one kernel headers update on the boot list, and I am trying to figure out how to remove the previous one. I do not see the point in having a growing list of them again.
View 9 Replies View RelatedI upgraded to 2.6.35-30.56 last night and now my system's a little flaky. Everything seems to be running ever-so-slightly slower and fullscreen flash is now choppy. The weird thing is the Grub menu upon bootup only shows the latest kernel, but not the previous kernels. Doing an "ls" of the /boot folder only shows this newest kernel. I'd like to revert back to the previous kernel but don't know how.

First, is there a reason Grub keeps the previous versions available to boot to in that list? If it is just in case of a problem with the new installation wouldn't it make sense to only have the most recent previous installation? The editing program opens the file named "menu.lst" but the file is empty. How is it possible for this file to be empty yet I have multiple boot options and they all work? Does anybody know what I am running into here?
I was using the 9.10 version of Ubuntu, and everything was ok. So I decided to update to 10.04, by update manager, and it not works pretty well. So I decided to reinstall my ubuntu. In my PC I also have a instalation of Windows XP, my father and sister uses it. The installation went well, no problems, Lucid Lynx is working fine. But in the grub screen, if you choose Win XP, the CPU starts to whisthle continuously, and the only thing you can do is restart.

I recently got my Dell XPS 17 and configured it to do dual boot into Win 7 and Maverick. Apparently, Maverick does not play nice with the newer hardware in this laptop so I decided to upgrade to Natty Beta. All has gone fine except for one little thing. When bootting Grub shows my WIn7 and Natty options but it also shows an option to use the older ubuntu version. It does not actually work as it stops receiving input at the user selection screen. I can't remove the image as it does not show up in synpatic nor is the package found when using the apt-get remove [linux image version] command.

was having the exact same problem as me and had tried exactly the same things as I have, and I still don't know how to remove those old files. I don't even know where these config files could be so that I can manually go in and remove them. I could live with the option in the Grub but I'm kind of a tidy freak and it annoys me to have a non-functional booting option taking up space.
Is it correct for me to think that a clean reinstall of natty would purge that ghost from the Grub? Also, how easy is this process and can the process mess up the MBR and not be able to do the dual-boot?
Is it possible using YAST to make it possible to be given the option to boot the previous kernel when a new one is installed during an update?

Basically I had windows 8.1 running on my fujitsu lifebook A532 laptop and wanted to dual boot kali linux alongside it, however upon installing the linux it deleted EVERYTHING! on my laptop, the grub bootloader only showed kali linux to choose from...
I then decided kali linux is too complicated for me and decided to delete everything and reinstall windows 8 again however I was surprised that my bios screen looks diffrent also I can not edit the boot sequence.
If I press f2 or f12 it takes me to a screen with a tab named Boot menu and its written on it debian and every time I press enter on it it takes me back to this same screen...

View 1 Replies View RelatedOver the past few days I have been trying to install an older kernel (kernel 2.6.28.1) on ubuntu 9.10 64-bit WUBI installation. I compiled, installed, and updated my grub for the kernel. When I reboot, the grub menu correctly gives me the option of booting into the older kernel but when I do so I receive the following error message:
error: you need to load the linux kernel first.
I am at a complete loss on how to fix this. I even downgraded grub but I still get the same error.

my grub2 start-up has every kernel for ubuntu since 9.10 in the list. can i safely delete these older kernels without screwing something up? also, where do they live?

I want to keep them but even though I can see only those two when I look in Synaptic, when I run update-grub I get two entries for each kernel. I have added the result of update-grub. This makes my grub list really long. Any ideas? Can one of them be custom compilation generated while installing something. May be then it would have exactly the same number but not show on synaptic package manager? How can I check if that is so or not?

I have the following line for my kernel boot options in /etc/default/grub file.

I need the rootdelay option for the Kubuntu 10.10 kernel but the BT4 kernel does not need it. But looks like setting this has a global effect and it waits for 80 (seconds ?) even when starting the BT4 kernel which is not required.
So is there a way to give the rootdelay option only to the Kubuntu 10.10 kernel and not to the BT4 kernel.
I have been learning about Ubuntu since 8.10. I have my two computers running dual boot (W7 + 8.04 & Vista + 9.10).
Sorry if this is a noob question, but I have noticed that each time there's a new kernel (now I have 2.6.31.16-generic), the grub OS selection screen adds 2 lines:
- One for the new kernel
- One for the new kernel - recovery mode
So, since I installed Karmic (2.6.31.14) Ubuntu Update has added 4 rows and shows code...
What is the rationale behinf this?

I had Windoze 7 on my wife's laptop, it started running crappy so I install Ubuntu 9.10 via Wubi (so it is not a partitioned dual-boot). I did the latest update, which I think included a kernel update. When I rebooted and chose Ubuntu from the windows dual boot window, instead of loading the GRUB I see an error message flash:

I tried several different commands (you can prompt it to give you available commands by hitting TAB), but it said it couldn't detect a kernel. Also, before I updated, I had tried to install iTunes via these instructions. iTunes seemed to have installed fine, but I hadn't tried it yet.

However, for some reason when a new kernel comes out and I upgrade to it GRUB 2 doesn't load the newest kernel but just loads the old original kernel that came with it when I originally installed 9.10. I have confirmed that the newer kernels are installed by editing the GRUB 2 command line at startup (just a temporary fix) and all worked well with the newer kernels. How can I make GRUB 2 load the newest kernel by default. On my laptop running 9.10 it has loaded the newest kernel by default ever since I installed it but my HTPC just won't cooperate.
