View 7 Replies View RelatedAfter hours of searching and trying different methods I am still unable to get my wireless going.. I have tried the PPA method from Chilli and looked through craneman's thread. I have installed the proper realtek driver and done modprobe for the device to no avail. In Additional drivers nothing shows except for my ATI drivers.

The latest Kernel update (2.6.35-25-generic) killed all my sound output on my Toshiba Satellite M115.
I tried reinstalling all ALSA components and plugins. No luck there.
Rebooting into 2.6.35-24-generic fixes the problem, in that my sound works again.
I have dell B130 with Ubuntu Karmic on it, and I like it. I recently purchased a new laptop, a Toshiba Satellite A505-S6033. I've been trying for about 24 hours to get Ubuntu 10.04 64 bit on this computer, but to no avail. I've seen some people say that they get error messages. When the cd loads up, it comes to the main page (run ubuntu off disk, install ubuntu, check for errors, etc.) Anyway, when I click to run it off the disk, the scren goes blank. The CD spins, but nothing happens from then on. I've tried a 32 bit version of Ubuntu 10.04, but the same thing happens. Just for experimentation, I tried xPud on it, and xpud works fine.

View 3 Replies View RelatedHave been using Karmic kaola for a few months on my toshiba tecra laptop..as of yesterday unable to boot up..all I get is a black screen on start up with no further activity..no bios menu etc..the led lights up for the power source and occasionally lights up on the hard drive which seems to make some noise as if trying to function...did connect it up to an external monitor which displayed the start up toshiba logo but then came up with the message error: "invalid enviroment block" unable to load default boot entries.am wondering if 1. there is a fault with the grub set up?2. Something more serious as my laptop screen refuses to function?3. Will I be able to retrieve my hard drive data using ubuntu live cd connected to an external monitor?
View 7 Replies View RelatedI tried to OSS workaround to get sound running but instead my sound card disappeared totally from the system. I restored ALSA (I think) but my sound card is still missing in action. If I could get some help on how to restore that I think I could figure the rest out. I tried the sound problem sticky but I ran into the part where the poster has no solution as well. Any assistance is greatly appreciated and I'm slowly learning how the terminal works.....pretty much what windows does for you but it's more flexible at the same time. I learned on DOS so it's not totally alien....just different commands.
I also found Realtek drivers for the HL 272 which is my sound card for linux but I can't make heads or tails of the instructions to install.....
I have an 10.10 Maverick Ubuntu, and I've tried to update it to Natty version, but when I try it says to I check my connection with Internet and then close the update app, but my connection is fine, I think this could be something related to the host, since when I try to use sudo or play Frets on Fire it says that they "couldn't resolve the host".

I have an IBM T43; only one HD allowed. It is loaded with Xp on the one HD, and others have and do use it regularly.I have loaded Lenny on Kingston USB flash on this machine without problem (sdb1 root and bootable.) I refuse to allow GRUB to be installed on the HD, tell it to load on /dev/sdb1, it completes and reboots. I then edit GRUB (HD0, 1) to (HD0, 0.) It then boots in fine. Later I edit the Boot entry.
When I attempt to do this with a Toshiba 8Gb Transmemory USB or a SanDisk 8Gb unit it simply restarts and displays a �"Error Loading Operating System" messageI�ve noted on the SanDisk the U3 business and have removed it via the provided tool; it still does not load.In G Parted I�ve noted on the Toshiba a hiddenfile at the beginning of the formatted partition. but can do nothing to remove it.It takes up quite a bit of territory. And, it too will not load.
I got this 1Tb Toshiba external about a month ago, and recently I started really using it to share lots of media files. What I've noticed is that it turns itself off after a few minutes of inactivity -- I researched this issue across the internet, and found that it's between 5 and 30 minutes, depending on who's writing about it.
I found a person who posted a DOS batch file, which (i think) continuously accesses the drive as long as the batch file is running. I'd like to find a way to do that in linux. could someone point me in the right direction?
i took a few minutes to plan it out... i think i need a loop that will access the drive (or do something to it, at least) once every minute until i close the script. I'd also like a message box that shows up that says something like "while this is open, your HDD is being accessed".
I found a few fixes which I tried to use, to no sucess. updating drivers, turning router on/off, turning wireless switch on/off, various other fixes from ubuntuforums. tried to upgrade to Natty Narwhale to see if the problem worked it's way out, to no avail. I've spent two days trying for this. Anyone out there willing to point me in the right direction or hold my hand?

View 2 Replies View RelatedI tried to update my ubuntu from 8.04 to 10.04. Because I couldn't find the update in the update manager I started the update with the following:

After checking for packages to update I first updated all the programms listed in the update manager. After this I started the update of the OS. After some checks the download of the new files started. It took appr. 2 hours. After this I got he message about some applications, which are no longer supported. So far no problems. Than I started the update of the system. After some further preparartions the update stopps with the following error message:

I tried a restart of the update as well as a rebboot of the system and restart of the update. Both failed with the same error.
My system:
AMD64 (ubuntu 32 bit version)
Grub with 'Ubuntu' and Windows XP
For me the only way to get Ubuntu 10.04 running seems to install it from CD/DVD.
Everything seems up to date but whenever I try to enable effects my system refuses, says the driver is missing. I check my drivers and they are all working properly.

View 4 Replies View Relatedtoday when i updated my ubuntu 9.10 it was about 44mb update and update manager was not able to download 13mb of files i clicked continue anyway. after that i shut down my pc and when i restarted it my old black and ordinary GRUB was gone and there was one with Debian symbol and blue background and everything and when i selected any OS ( i have 3 os 1 on my 80GB hard disk which is ubuntu and other 2 are debian and windows XP which are on 20GB hard disk) and it said

so i am now running on live cd.
Just did an update to 9.1 & now am unable to boot to ubuntu, windows7 still boots ok. Didnt pay much attention to the update but did notice there were a lot of cups files. Booting to ubuntu get something about using a tab & then getting a list of commands one can do. Tried boot got 'no kernel' tried exit & got a pc reboot which let me back to the tab msg.

I'm on Hardy, and I tried to completely remove the firefox package using Synaptic, and re-installing it, and I always get the same error. Maybe it might have something to do with ubuntuzilla? I know I used that a while back to install Firefox 3.5/3.6, since the only one I was getting from the package manager was 3.0. Anyway, here is the error:

I have virtualbox installed under ubuntu 8.04 x64. The kernel got updated and since then I have to reboot the computer and choose previous kernel to use virtualbox. The reason is that I can't get a hold of the virtualbox module for 2.6.24-28 generic. When the kernel has been updated in the past I would just go into synaptic and select it, but this time it doesn't show and I've waited a while now... Tried searching for the package to no avail.

View 1 Replies View RelatedI am unable to shutdown ubuntu after upgrading it to Maverick Meerkat.
I can do Ctrl + Alt + F4 and then Ctrl + Alt + Del but it does not let me use the taskbar button. When I press the shutdown button it just takes me to login page.
I'm having a bit of trouble with playback of a few types of videos and I think I should be able to do this with the hardware I'm not what I would call a power user in Ubuntu so you may have to bear with me. =)
Here's what I'm working with:
CPU: Intel P4 3.40 Ghz
Memory: 3023 MB generally running about 90% free
Video Card: nVidia GeForce 7300GT, 512 MB 350 MHz, driver version 260.19.06
Display: Outputting to an old CRT TV via S-Video cable at 1024x768
I've just moved to Maverick today, I had these same problems with Lucid plus some others that seem to have been resolved in that upgrade. I've tried these files on VLC 1.1.5 and Totem Movie Player 2.32.0 (using GStreamer 0.10.30) and I get the same results in each player.
Here are the details on two files I get this with, and what I see when I try to play them: SYMPTOM: Video seems okay, audio is basically missing - maybe the odd blip but by and large, nothing.

I finally managed to convince my dad to try Ubuntu and installed maverick in his desktop .I myself am new to Linux(6 months old) and found the experience refreshing.Now in my dads computer although I have enabled the universe repos neither the synaptic or the software center or the apt-get seem to be able to access them.Here is my /etc/apt/source.list.

Every time I try to do update or install a new software, it stops me, I tried to do update through the terminal but it didn't work, giving this error message : E: dpkg was interrupted, you must manually run 'sudo dpkg --configure -a' to correct the problem.

This morning my update manager came up so I clicked to update. About halfway through the update an error message popped up & said to restart my system. I restarted my system and now have a black screen with the following message:

I read around earlier & tried to use a Ubuntu disk and reboot but I have the same error.
