Hi! After installing 10.10 I get this error in the Additional Driver application. At the same time compiz has revertet to using the "no effects" setting which is very annoying. I have tried a complete reinstall of the NVIDIA drivers, both the nvidia-current and the latest one from nvidias homepage. Nothing works.
View 6 RepliesAfter countless failed installs, and a memory and motherboard replacement, I finally got 11.04 working. So I then installed the latest proprietary Nvidia driver for the 7950 GT card in my desktop. Now I'm getting this (IMO) ridiculous Alice in Wonderland-esque message.

I am trying to get my new computer to work with the proprietary nvidia drivers, but unfortunatly I am having some troubles. When I activate the nvidia drivers in jockey and restart the computer, the DE fails to load unity, and no compositing is actually being done. When I check jockey, it says:
"this driver is activated but not currently in use" I have an NVIDIA GT 550M. I can use unity with nouveau, however there are some problems that I have noticed, like not resuming from sleep and some freezing, which I suspect is a result of the open source drivers(could be fixed in an update later). But does anyone know how to get the proprietary drivers to work in the mean time?
I've got an issue where my nvidia drivers won't activate, which is a fairly large problem on my Asus G60VX. The reason it bugs me most is because it won't let me use a second monitor while the drivers aren't activated.
Here's my issue.
Now, I already tried going into Synaptic and removing all NVidia stuff manually, and then reinstalling, but this didn't fix my problem.
I just installed natty today after erasing the previous maverick and windows dual boot.Everything works fine.But there is one problem .The propriety driver for Nvidia seems to be activated but not in use.I still get unity desktop,(couldn't get it before installing the propriety driver).I have tried removing and activating it again but it ended up the same again.I know that this problem has been encountered lot of times,but I searched everywhere and didn't find anything.

After reading many forum topics I somehow managed to set up the connection.Now the only problem is that when I restart computer wireless connection is no longer working. Each time I boot Ubuntu I have to go to System>Administration>Hardware Drivers, remove Broadcom STA wireless driver and then install it again. View 9 Replies View RelatedI was trying to get the b43 driver work with my broadcom bcm4322 wireless card. I changed the kernel from 2.6.32 to 2.6.38 in order to make the b43 driver to work. When I booted with the new kernel the internet stopped working so I looked for a solution. I don't remember which website I went but it said that I have to re-install the STA drivers so I did that and rebooted and nothing happened. I decided to go back to the 2.6.32 kernel and re-installed the STA drivers. The wireless card (eth1) isn't showing when I run the command iwconfig

i followed a tutorial and i used NDISWRAPPER to install the windows drivers and my device WUSB300N (wireless network card) worked perfectly. Once i rebooted however, the drivers are still installed but not activated if you get me? so the wireless card is just not read by the operating system.

However, the Additional Drivers app advises that "No proprietary drivers are in use on this system" and that the driver is activated but not in use. I know other people have complained about this problem, but for me this is breaking 3D content and I can't get compiz to work either. When I try to start compiz manually (compiz --replace), I get this error:
Code: compiz (code) - Fatal: Couldn't open display My Xorg has nvidia as device driver. I'm using the NVIDIA X Server settings program to setup my two monitors, so I know that this is what is in use. In addition to the compiz problem (which I can get over), sometimes I can see the desktop background through the active window. It's hard to explain so I'll take a screenshot when it happens again. Things I've tried:
1. Installing nvidia's latest drivers - The installer was extremely picky, constantly complaining about other modules and drivers. After I finally managed to remove everything it didn't like and install it, X wouldn't load.
2. Reinstall nvidia-current - tried multiple times with no change.
3. Link /usr/lib/xorg/modules/extensions/libglx.so to /usr/lib/nvidia-current/xorg/libglx.so.270.41.06 - didn't make a difference.
I've been with Ubuntu since about 10.10 and a little before, but did a trial. I just installed 11.04 tonight, and my wireless driver is having an issue. I installed it, and reset my computer to complete the installation, but it still doesn't pick up anything wireless, just Ethernet.
View 4 Replies View RelatedUsing ubuntu 10.10 (pinguy OS) i connected an ethernet cable from my girl's macbook pro to her lenovo ideapad s10-3t to transfer some DS9 episodes onto it. new enough to linux to have not been able to figure out how to access the files on the mac, so i disconnected the ethernet, and the wireless hasn't worked since. tried everything i know, and googling for a while (as well as searching again on this forum) to no avail.
Just before linking the 2 computers via ethernet, the wireless worked fine on the ideapad, always had; but not so after the ethernet connection that did nothing other than apparently kill the wireless. an "lshw -C network" command tells me i have a BCM4313 wireless card, and *-network UNCLAIMED. also, if i launch "install additional drivers", i see that the proprietary driver is not active.
How could merely plugging in an ethernet cable that happened to be conncected to a MBP running OSX.6 do that? and will that happen again? i thought linux was supposed to play real nice with other OS's, so why did a simple file transfer kill my wireless connectivity? i have no access to internet via ethernet cable, so i cannot just download the driver i need now. shouldn't it still be in the computer still? somewhere? is there a simple solution to this, or has the wireless driver been wiped out by plugging in the ethernet? is this a bug that should be reported?
My wireless was working perfectly until I accidentally let the battery run flat with the machine prevented from hibernating. Upon recovery, there was no wireless available. Checking the Hardware Drivers, I can see the Broadcomm driver as "Activated but not currently in use". Following the copious advice elsewhere I have disabled the driver, rebooted the machine, enabled it again - many times. Still the same message. What is stopping me from activating it? Bit of a noob so.
View 1 Replies View RelatedI'm running hardware already considered legacy and I was made painfully aware that those drivers, for ATI cards, are only available from Jessie repositories; yet, somehow I was able to have my system configured to run not the stock drivers the system used for installation but, allegedly, proprietary drivers.
I did notice an overall improvement on how the system displays everything on the screen but after fumbling around the system trying to install a game I had a message warning that only software acceleration was activated and not full hardware acceleration, which was what I was aiming at.
After going through a lot of guides on the web I was able to:
a) discover the system is running MESA drivers (or so I have understood)
b) install headers for my system but somehow along the way I fumbled whatever I was doing and I probably now have a lot of loose ends in the system
Being Debian (and rock solid) the system is still running smoothly but I really want to clean up after myself and correct what I can and improve where is possible.
Bus 001 Device 002: ID 0846:9040 NetGear, Inc.So I think it's correctly recognizing it, but for some reason it won't identify it as a wireless USB NIC. I'm trying to install without a wired connection (several rooms away from a wire, and this is an old tower), so any help there would be nice, if not, then any advice on what to do when I get it hardwired would be nice. I have the Live CD to try this with. I also have a second CD/DVD, and have it installed/working on XP on the box (which after I get wireless working I'll be replacing),so I have the .inf file if anyone can direct me to using ndiswrapper for it. Let me know what else you need to know.

Tried using Lilo and now it says I have no activated partitions. I can only boot if I use a LiveCD or Super Grub Disk to find my Windows XP Loader. Here is my results.txt from the boot info script:

Todays update broke my display again. The windows are hanging off the left side of the screen.
Nvidia current correctly configured 1920x1080, xorg.conf seems ok too.
System - Administration - Additional Drivers shows nvidia current, but mentions that the driver is activated but not currently in use
How can I get Ubuntu to use this driver?
Recently the menus in Firefox will no longer drop down when I click on them. I also can't activate them by using the keyboard shortcut.
View 4 Replies View RelatedA friend of mine is running Ubuntu. He used to run Windows XP, but he kept destroying it completely, and I soon got tired of fixing it for him. So I setup Ubuntu, and we're both happier people for it.BUT! The other day he asked me to setup a VPN (PPTP) connection to his workplace, which I promptly did. It also just works, except for one minor problem: When he fires up the VPN connection, I lose the ability to connect to his computer over SSH. As soon as he shutdown the VPN connection, I can once again log in over SSH.I use the SSH connection for basic maintenance and for tunneling port 5900 so I can assist him over VNC.
His nic is setup with DHCP. Gateway is 192.168.57.1. Port 22 is NAT'ed to 192.168.57.2, which is the IP his computer is assigned by the router (it's reserved to his MAC address).
When he connect the VPN, a new interface is created with the IP 192.168.1.32. I'm very much _not_ a network expert. I can manage the very basic stuff, but beyond that I'm quite lost.
Some times when I start up I get this theme activated and used. The only way to get rid of it totally is to restart. How can I stop this?

Twice recently, when shutting down for the night, I've noticed a Guest Session has been activated on my system. Since I'm the only one using this machine, I'm naturally curious. Can anyone out there explain how Guest Session works and if it can be activated remotely... or otherwise explain how the check mark next to "Guest Session" might be activated?

NOTES:
1.) sudo service gdm start states that the gdm service is already running
2.) ctr + alt + f7 does nothing and along with that all the other alt + f keys do not have a GUI
3.) i can log in and use the OS via command line
4.) other things i have tried is the sudo apt-get install nvidia-current just led to the same results

Anyway, Due to the bad habit of windows habits, I've many Desktop Icons on my Desktop.
I ALREADY KNOW HOW TO HIDE THEM. I know both the ways for hiding them...
BUT, the problem is, whenever I hide Icons, the desktop RIGHT CLICK DROP-DOWN MENU goes too!! There's no right click menu then.
But as soon as I activate SHOW DESKTOP ICONS, the menu comes back... Pretty obvious why. But how can I prevent it???
I need HIDDEN desktop icons, ALONG with DESKTOP RIGHT CLICK MENU.

I bought Sony vivo c series laptop and I tried to install ubuntu 10.10 version on it.After installed ubuntu the ethernet device was not activated. But It's working fine with wireless network. Similar problem I faced with older version 10.04 also.
Then, I tried with newer version 11.04. It detected Ethernet device.After installation over I just rebooted and I have chosen ubuntu OS, then it stuck and goes to blank screen.I am doing all my work in ubuntu only, i am struggling to recover form this problem for a long time.

View 5 Replies View RelatedI activated a bunch of fonts through FontMatrix, which is a font manager I installed from the Ubuntu Software Center. The Font's were then available to me in inkscape, and a bunch of other programs. Now however I wanted to use some of those fonts in OpenOffice Impress (Presentation), but OpenOffice didn't seem to list the fonts.
Does anyone know how I can solve this. I'm assuming that one of two things is happening. Either OOo is not following the symlinks that are present in the .fontmatrix directory, or that openoffice is hard coded to not read fonts from any directory other than .fonts.
