Ubuntu Installation :: How To Upgrade Minor Version
Oct 21, 2010
Does Ubuntu can / support update automatically like Windows Update does ?it is simply because I'd like to standardize my Ubuntu server installation across the datacenter to be exactly the same (latest) rather than having multiple minor version.Or is it possible to script / cronjob upgrade Ubuntu 10.0.4 into 10.10 using apt-get command by checking to the repo
I have just 4 minor things with Ubuntu 10.04 (64-bit)
1) Sometimes the disk checker runs at startup. Why does it take so long to finish? On the previous version of Ubuntu, it was a quick check, but now on version 10.04 it takes AGES just to check the disk!
2) Why do some programs like Kega Fusion only play sound if you run it on its own with no other programs open? Try the Linux version of Kega Fusion with and without other programs open: [URL]
3) Who do I ask if I would like a hardware device supported? I have a SIM card reader (Veho VSD-229) and I can only use it in Windows to back up my SIM card contacts.
4) Last question. Is there a Ubuntu "wishlist" anywhere?
I have installed Ubuntu 10.10 desktop version on my Lenovo L420 laptop. Now my friend told me that if I had installed laptop version on it then it would have recognized events related to laptop like closing down the laptop screen and all.
Q1. Is there any way by which I can upgrade it to laptop version?
I've had two centos smtp relays setup since 5.1, and it seems every day there are updates, and about every 3 months new minor releases. Is there a way to "lock" to a minor release version of centos? I use yum update to run updates, is that the correct process?
i upgraded from 10.04 to 10.10 after a format, and i've been getting this annoying thing going on with my mouse pointer, where, whenever i move it, it initiates a loading animation, and after about a second, to a second and a half, it acts as if i were to click with the lmb, even if i didn't. this makes life difficult, because i have to be conscious of where i click, or if i'm typing something, it will cut me off in the middle, or open a link i didn't want to open, and all sorts of other erratic behavior. it routinely stops me from typing mid-sentence, stops videos videos, etc., and it's extremely hard to get used to after a decade of never taking notice of where i put my pointer, this is becoming a major headache.
I try to upgrade from ubuntu 10.04 to 10.10, but there is no final version available when I press Alt + F2, only the release candidate. What is the problem here and what can I do?
i have a live cd i had sent to my address a while back but now i am outdated and would like to upgrade to the current version. is there any commands i can run to upgrade? or will i need to order another live cd

Now, every time I run update manager, it tells me to run a partial upgrade. I can close the window and proceed upgrading packages, but if I let it try the partial upgrade is starts a distribution upgrade !??! I am currently running 11.04.
How can I stop update manager from trying to update my distro version?
I've got Ubuntu 11.04 here and I am currently downloading oneiric ocelot iso. My question is: can I simply upgrade from my current Ubuntu version to oneiric? I've got some pretty important files on my current Ubuntu and I don't want to loose them and yet very much interested to see what oneiric ocelot.
I will be version-upgrading a friends (Ubuntu only) laptop very soon. It is 9.04 now and the new version will be (ideally) 10.04.1 The machine has a large unused area on the hard drive and who has known this situation was to use the uncommitted area to do a complete new install of 10.04.1, leaving the 9.04 unchanged (useful insurance). Then, copy, paste (?) the /home directory from the 9.04 into the newly completed installed 10.04.1 overwriting the installed directory.
Opinions seem to support the notion that such a paste into 10.04.1 is likely to be successful and trouble free as long as the 10.04.1 installing username is the same as the 9.04 username with same privilege level. I would be grateful for comments here, particularly with any details, gotchas, you can see.
Today I installed an upgrade through update manager of the Adobe Flash Player Plugin and it breaks the flash in all three of my browsers: Firefox, Opera and Chromium. Had to revert to previous version to get it to work. Ubuntu Version 10.10 i386 Sony Viao Laptop.
Ihave Ubuntu 9.10. would like to upgrade soon to the new version of Ubuntu via the package manager. If i upgrade this way will my programs and files and pictures stay as is. I have all my stuff backed up anyways, but would like to know how this upgrade works.
I am using Nagios 3.2.4 monitoring tool on a Linux box with Fedora 10 installed on it and Apache version is 2.2.10. I would like to upgrade my Fedora version from 10 to latest version Fedora 13.
On my debian web server I curently have ImageMagick 6.3.7 08/07/09 Q16 since this is an old version of imagemagick i wanted to upgrade my system that still runs etch, and afterwards upgrade imagemagick. I can not see what version the current lenny imagemagick package has, but I assume it is newer then 6.3.7, no?
When i ugraded I found out that my apt-sources used stable rather than etch. So I already had a mix of lenny and etch I suppose. I then had > cat /etc/debian_version 4.0 Before I upgraded I changed my apt sources from stable to etch, updated the package-tools and did a dist-upgrade (for details, I followed these instructions). After restarting I have still 4.0 as debian version. Also uname -r is 2.6.17. How can I do a correct update?.
Also my services were not started (ftp, ssh, apache2), so I asked my hoster to start the ssh service. This morning everything was up again, but it seems like nobody there have had a look at this. How do I absolutely ensure that my ssh service is start at boot. It is a remote webserver, so I need at least this service to be running.
i would like to replace my Ubuntu Desktop version with the Netbook version. I dont mind losing my current data on the desktop version but if there is a way for me not too i would love to know
I've had some minor scrolling issues with iceweasel-4 which mostly did not draw my attention until yesterday when scrolling this page : [URK]. Scrolling was choppy.....
[Code]...
Some others things I've noticed : running iceweasel-4 in virtualbox ( minimal gnome installation Sid ) , running iceweasel-4 in virtualbox ( minimal KDE installation Squeeze with gnome-themes added to be sure ) did not have these scrolling issues.....( so is nvidia to be blamed ? ) I was about to remove the nvidia driver ( from nvidia.com ) and replace it with nvidia driver from Debian when I tried just one more step: Added deb [URL] unstable main to sources.list and upgraded libcairo2 from version 1.10.2-1.1~bpo60+1 ( squeeze-backports ) to version 1.10.2-6.1
A couple of little niggles seen with KDE4.6. On 32bit install, (openSUSE11.3 was clean install)
-- reboot and shut down do nothing but hibernate and sleep are ok, can only powerdown with su privileges, -- order of applications in plasma bar change after reboot.
On 64bit install, (openSUSE11.3 was update of openSUSE11.2)
-- slow poweroff overcome with new user profile, (no longer a problem with latest update) -- inconsistent mouse curser theme, over desktop theme is Oxygen White, over application windows its DMZ (resolved mouse cursor theme issue on 64bit install. -- /etc/sysconfig, parameter X_MOUSE_CURSOR="DMZ" -- and -- /usr/share/icons/default was a link to DMZ -- /usr/share/icons/default.kde4 was a link to oxygen -- changed so that both were linked to DMZ -- mouse cursor now consistent within windows and across desktop.
Just got my AW M11x and I am following a thread on installation issues and work around. My question is should I install the desktop version or the Netbook version? Not sure the best location to post, if incorrect please move accordingly Wanting to run gimp, open office, wine to access MS office (use for school) and possibly install photoshop for raw work gimp cant handle.
I have a Tecra A7 with Intel 945GM. /boot is in a Ext4 partition and the rest is LVM2 splitten in 3 (/: Ext4, /home: Ext4 and swap). There is also a windows partition in the disk: I have installed openSUSE 11.4 (clean but keeping my /home directory untouched why is there since my openSUSE 11.2 installation). I have the following questions:
1.- During the installation I tried to shrink the windows partition and grow the LVM2 . The installer said that the partition was in use and could not be modified. I thought that during the installation the parititions where not mounted. Why is this? How can I grow now the physical volume (not the logical ones)?
2.- Solving this problem I realized that there a lot of duplicate files in .kde and .kde4. Can some of these be deleted?
3.- At boot, the computer frequently freezes after GRUB. Is right after selecting an option in GRUB, so it might be at mounting. In the failsafe configuration, it happens less frequently. How can I diagnose what is really going on?
4.- Every time I navigate into a webpage which contains a login form, Chrome ask me to unlock kdewallet. It is extremely annoying because this happens with all webpages, not just the ones in which I am registered.
Is it possible to get a file descriptor from the major and minor number. If so, how can this be done? I am trying to see if a port(eg ttyS2) is opened without using the fdopen or open or fopen functions. is there a way to get the file descriptor of file or port that as already been opened, without using the functions I mentioned above. These functions reopens the port. I am trying to avoid that.
I need to make a minor change to one of the drivers in my 2.6.38 (-sid) kernel. However, I am wondering how best to go about it. Many of the guides on the internet presume one will be using a vanilla source tree and plan on manual configuration.
I am looking for the easiest means of accomplishing a simple recompilation of what I currently have -- with the same configuration and everything else. On Gentoo I usually just do a zcat /proc/config.gz > .config
However am unsure if this is the, correct, Debian way of doing things.
my laptop currently has 8GB of RAM and I wouldn't want that going to waste. I have read about the issues with flash on the 64 bit versions of buntu. Would you recommend going 64-bit or 32-bit with PAE? also, does the 10.10 kernel have PAE enabled by default?
