I have a laptop with no disk drive and also i have no net... but i do have alotta software ....is it possible to "unconvert" iso files from ubuntu disks or do a flash drive install with a disk to flash drive?

In both cases, the goal was to leave a large chunk of unpartitioned disk after the Ubuntu partitions, for a second OS install or a filesystem Ubuntu cannot create like NTFS.
When I install with manual partitions, the system can't boot and asks for me to insert a system disk and press any key. When I reinstall telling Ubuntu to "use the entire disk" it then works.
First laptop, first try:
Remainder of the 500GB disk is free space.
Fails to boot, "insert system disk".
First laptop, second try without the /boot partition:
Remainder of the 500GB disk is free space.
Fails to boot, "insert system disk".
"use entire disk" works perfectly.
Second laptop, first try:
Same thing, non-system disk or disk error, insert system disk.
Second try "use entire disk" is currently in progress but I expect the same to happen.
I downloaded the latest version of wubi and when I click to run i get the error "pyrun.exe - No Disk. There is no disk in the drive. insert a disk into drive DeviceHarddisk2DR2".

I had done a new lucid install to a 1 TB RAID 1 array using the alternate CD a few weeks back. I messed up that system trying to some hardware working that lucid doesn't have drivers for yet, so I gave up on it and reinstalled to a single 80 GB disk that I now want to move over to the RAID array.
I moved all of the existing files on the array to a single folder, then copied all of the folders from the 80 GB disk over to the array with permissions and symlinks (minus the contents of /proc and /sys, which I created empty).
These are the commands I used:

I tried to change fstab to use the 689a... for root, but when I try to boot, it's still trying to open /dev/disk/by-uuid/412d...
So then I booted from the single disk again and chrooted into the array, then ran update-initramfs -u. I got 3 "grep: /proc/modules: No such file or directory" errors, and "cat: /proc/cmdline: No such file or directory"- so I created directory /proc/modules, created an empty file /proc/cmdline, and ran the initramfs update again. Then I tried to shut down, which hung (probably because I was doing all of this from a terminal window in Gnome), so I killed the power after a couple of minutes.
It's still trying to use /dev/disk/by-uuid/412d... to boot.
What am I missing? I assume I just have to change the UUID to mount as root, but I don't know how.
I have a netbook I'm not using and which I transformed into a server with Apache, Tomcat6, Netatalk, Webmin, BIND9 and Tor.
Problem is, the disks never stop spinning because all of the programs write a few kb at least every few seconds to disk, even when nobody is connected to it.
My question is: Is there a way to have the computer boot from disk like normal (maybe even a squashfs), keep ALL CHANGES to ram and then save to disk when either the ram is full (unlikely because the server is rebooted every few days) or at shutdown?
I thought about a mixture of ramfs and unionfs but I'm not good enough yet...
I installed Debian on my PC with a Acer Stock motherboard (xc600) with amd64 and after the installation finished it told me to remove my installation media and reboot. After reboot I was returned this message ' ERROR: No boot disk has been detected or the disk has failed.'. I have verified with gparted using mint live OS that I have Debian installed on my system.
I got believes that this may have be caused by a broken grub or I need to configure something I don't know how in BIOS.

My installation media was a USB 2.0 flashdrive with a Debian 8.2 Jessie Installer and 9 different Linux distros. I have installed Debian multiple times before on my laptop and never had this problem so I know how to go through the installation process and set the partitions.
I have xp/fc8 on an older ide drive and just installed a new sata 1T and planned to put fc10 on it but in the process I killed my fc8 installation. I told the installer that the other disks were off limits but it was somewhat confusing at the bootloader page. So, I suspect that I told it boot off the fc8 disk. If that is the case is there a way to restore the fc8 install by somehow rescuing the /boot partition on the fc8 disk?

It is right after boot process, and just when it should load grub. Grub is installed in the MBR. Windows7, is installed as well, and is not an option to remove. (Should not be the problem though).
/ is set with the bootable flag.
The installation went without any issues, and I have actually tried to install twice with the exact same thing.
i have been away from linux for a long while and decided to try it out again. i just received a fedora 10 dvd and went to install it.it wouldn't boot on either my laptop or pc?so i explored the disk and realised its a source disk?
1 = is the dvd disk any good to me?

A few months ago the install stopped working. I can't remember what the error said... and tbh I can't be bothered to reboot twice to read it, but it has to be removed now anyways.
Had a look in windows to see if I can do anything in the disk manager, but it appears I can't. Oh wise ones, please, which path should one take?

I thought, hmm, I should probably do this, but I'll decide later, thus, installed 10.10 without encrypting the hard disk.Now, I want to encrypt the hard disk but don't see anywhere in the System Preference or Administration where I can do that. Am I missing it? Or how do I do this now?

The screen says "Starting disk partitioner" and the progress bar stops at 45%. Anyway im trying to install kernel headers and devel from the fedora installation disk but i dont know how to get to the cdrom thru terminal as i cant copy the RPMs to desktop by drag n drop or using software installer.

Serious errors were found while checking the disk drive for /boot
If I switch off and restart, ubuntu will then start without issue.
My setup is like this ....3 disks, one with 10.10 clean install - so Grub2, separate partitions for /, /boot and /home, one with windows 7, one with windows XP and 10.04 wubi (this is my old disk which I will trash once I'm happy with my upgrade to 10.10 & 7 on separate disks.
I installed 7 and 10.10 with ONLY their disks installed. After both were working, I added all disks and rejigged the grub2 menu (using update-grub and StartUp-Manager).
This problem only seems to occur if my previous boot was not 10.10 ( I will investigate this further). It's as if something (grub2 ?, the bios ?) is remembering part of the previous boot and not using the grub2 menu completely.
I've recently upgraded from Ubuntu 9.10 to 10.04. I would like to install 10.04 on another computer without having to download the upgrade again. This computer is also running 9.10. Is there a way that I can create an installation disk of the upgrade I just applied to my system and carry it over to the other computer to upgrade too?

View 3 Replies View RelatedI'm trying to install Ubuntu 10.04 amd64 on a system I recently built that currently has Windows 7 installed.
Strangely, when I booted from the install disk, I got an unrecoverable error. [URL] said in that case, try to install from a live session, so I did that.
Live session install worked fine until I got to the partitioning section of the setup. Nothing displayed in the partition space and all my partition options were greyed out!
I have tried several things. I tried booting from my Lubuntu 32 bit that I know works (running on my laptop), it could not detect the hard disk either.
I tried booting into Windows 7 and shrinking the partition in the Windows partition manager and seeing if Ubuntu's installer would detect the space that way...no such luck.
cfdisk would not work either. Gave a big fat cannot access the disk error.
fdisk -l displays nothing. Gparted from the live session is a no-go as well.
BTW, relevant hardware:

I've been playing around with arch and ubuntu in virtual box, and after many... many installs i realized it'd be practical to just image the virtual drive and do it that way.
Now of course I could just copy the vdi file, but that's cheating.
Kind of like what is normally done with norton ghost, however I don't have money to be buying it, and so it's left me curious about what utilities similar to ghost there are our there.
Currently I only have Ubuntu installed on my laptop taking up my main drive. I'd like to partition my disk into two separate partitions. Whenever I open up terminal and type fdisk /dev/sda I always get: unable to open /dev/sda despite the fact that System>Administration>Disk Utility shows it as my main device. (/dev/sda1 is the main volume)
View 3 Replies View RelatedI have a problem with seeing the partitions from a hard disk in ubuntu after installing updates. I installed the fresh 10.10 x64 desktop edition yesterday and I could've seen everything from the live CD. I think that it started to be missing after installing about 65 updates (those were the recommended updates).
In windows 7 everything is fine. I can see every partition like this:
Disk 0 and Disk 2 are basically the same (SATA) and Disk 1 is a rather old ATA drive, but in Ubuntu I can only see the partitions from the Disk 1 and 2. Ubuntu is installed to the 93.13 GB partition on Disk 2. Grub is installed to Disk 1 and it is the first boot device (not sure if this matters). The partitions from Disk 0 are not displayed on the Places menu bar.

It only displays some info about Disk 1 and partition Storage and then hangs. The hdd led is lit constantly. It doesn't even display the info about the partitions on Disk 2, even though if I can browse those two partitions. And when I want to reboot, the ubuntu logo displays but it hangs there and I think that this is due to this problem with the hdd recognition.
am using 10.10 maverick and after installing ubuntu on an 8gig sd card the swap partition (1.55 gigs) is not being used, i am not sure what to do
View 9 Replies View RelatedI'm having trouble using Ubuntu 10.10 (64 bit) to create an installation on a USB (read-write) drive. I've had to use PLOP to boot the system, since I want the usb drive on a high-speed controller, and my machine is such that the on-mainboard USB is slow. So, I put the empty USB (16 GB) on the fast controller, boot from the Ubuntu installation DVD, and install the OS.
Then I switch to booting PLOP, the boot manager, and use it to boot from USB. Everthing works fine, and I can use ubuntu -- but only the first time. Once I shut down, and try to boot again, PLOP doesn't start the boot from the USB drive. It apparently crashes (the star field simulator doesn't continue). It does try to (at least) load the USB drivers, but stalls without finding the USB boot medium (my flash drive).
Anyone have any idea what's happening? Also let me know if there might be a more trusted way to boot from the high-speed USB drive (like, it would be great if the installation disk had an option to install the USB drivers and then do a secondary boot). Plop is nice because it can be on read-only storage (a DVD or CD) and
so can't be corrupted after the fact.
I attempted to upgrade to 11.04 but I get an error message that says I do not have enough disk space. I am dual booting ubuntu from an external hard drive. How do I alter my partition size to allow for the upgrade?
