Ubuntu Installation :: Installing BURG Prevents Windows From Booting?

Apr 19, 2010

Ubuntu Lucid 10.04 Beta 2 64-bit
Dual-boot with Windows 7 Professional 64-bit
Compaq CQ50-215NR laptop with 3GB system memory, 1.9GHz Athlon X2 QL-60 dual-core processor, nVIDIA GeForce 8200M G, 160GB HDD

Today I decided to install the BURG bootmenu on my computer so that I could enjoy nice, pretty graphical bootmenus instead of boring old text-based ones.I installed and configured BURG using this tutorial(after some few snafus wherein I tried to use older tutorials and went through many needless complicated steps that didn't end up working anyway).Restarted, and it worked great - except for one thing. Windows would no longer boot.It would get to the "Starting Windows" screen, then about halfway through there it would flash and restart. It wouldn't start in "Startup Repair Mode" either (the same thing happened). So, I did some frantic googling, and discovered this thread. I followed a set of instructions posted therein to install Lilo, reconfigure my MBR to Windows' liking, and reinstall Grub2.Windows booted after that.Well, I thought that the problem must have been caused by one of the numerous false starts I made while trying to get BURG installed, so I installed BURG again, set it up again, and bang - Windows wouldn't boot any more. So, I re-did the MBR with Lilo again, only this time I forgot to reinstall Grub2 (oops!) and had to boot from my LiveCD and install it thataway. At any rate, I'm fairly certain that installing BURG is what's keeping Windows from booting.

Ubuntu Installation :: Installing - Booting - 11.04 Without Touching Windows 7 MBR

Aug 5, 2011

What is the "recommended" method for dual-booting Ubuntu and Windows 7, if one cannot allow the disk's MBR to be overwritten or changed in any way?

Before now, I have either installed GRUB/GRUB2 to the MBR, or else installed Ubuntu and Windows to two different hard drives.

The machine in this case, a Samsung NP300-V5A-A02US notebook PC, has only a single hard drive. I cannot allow any alteration of the MBR, because then the Samsung backup/system recovery software (Samsung Recovery Solution 5) will no longer work.

Ubuntu Installation :: Installing On Windows Machine Without Dual Booting?

Oct 14, 2010

i currently am running windos 7 (64 bit) and would also like to install ubuntu on a second hard drive. i understand a dual boot is easy enough to do, but i'd like to install ubuntu so that it and windows are completely isolated. rather than be prompted with a boot screen to choose os, i would do so by changing hd boot priority in bios. i'd like the end result to be 2 separte computers in one box. can it be set up this way, and if so, how?

Fedora Installation :: Windows Not Booting After Installing 2nd Distro?

Apr 18, 2009

I had setup my system for triple boot with Windows, F10 & Suse. I had the Windows partition and then installed F10 setting up Grub to load the other two. All went fine and was able to choose to boot to Windows which worked. I then installed Suse, choosing the bootloader to be on the partition for Suse. This installed fine and can now choose to boot into Suse which works. F10 still works as expected, but when I choose to boot Windows, I just end up with a Grub command line. I can't see how the Windows partition could have been affected. I can still see all the files in there, but it just wont boot.

[Code]...

This is not really a Linux issue but does anyone know how I can 'repair' this Windows partition without affecting any other partitions. I don't have a Windows install CD. If I boot off FreeDOS, is there a command to repair the 'bootability' of the Windows partition only?

Ubuntu :: Changed Ownership Prevents Booting?

Aug 5, 2011

So, I've done a lot of stupid things, but this one ranks pretty high. So I'm looking at files here and there, fooling around and tweaking things if I can, but after a while, I get sick and tired of having to fiddle around because a file's owner is root. So, completely ignoring the fact I could start an x session as root, I perform the following command:

chown -hR MY-USERNAME / I'm thinking to myself, "Oh look at me, I'm so smart" until I turn off my laptop for the night and come back this morning, and ubuntu (10.10, 32 bit) says it could not change ICE authority (or something like that) and a few more error messages. Then, I boot into the recovery console, and again, not even bothering to think anything through properly, I chown everything back to root, then chown my home folder back to me. Anyway, I still get the error message, execpt now I can't alt-c to close the first windows that talks about the ICE authority file.

One of my friends has an ubuntu partition, so I can ask him about certain ownerships, but that could take a while and I don't know where to start.

Ubuntu Servers :: Acpi=off Flag Prevents Server From Booting

May 2, 2011

I'm running Ubuntu Server 11.04 on a home PC as a local-only file and web server for some private projects. After a few minutes Ubuntu will stop responding to the network and a cold reboot is required to re-enable the NIC.I've been able to stop the above occurring with a user logged in and constantly pinging the gateway, although this is obviously undesirable.

I read here and elsewhere that a fix is to set acpi=off in grub. I have done this but now instead Ubuntu will not boot and shows the message:

do_IRQ: 1.55 No irq handle for vector (irq -1)
Disabling IRQ #34

and hangs there indefinitely. The system will boot fine if I revert the changes but obviously the sleep problem remains. The BIOS does not have an option to disable ACPI, just select S1 or S3.Is there anything else I should be looking for in order to disable sleep? Otherwise the system is working fine, and when it's awake I haven't had any other trouble.

Debian Hardware :: Unlocking AMD Cores Prevents Booting?

Nov 22, 2010

So I recently built a gaming computer, which I typically use windows for. I'm mainly a linux user and I have separate computers for that. But, I wanted to try an experiment with linux on my gaming computer due to it having the best hardware I have.Anyways, I have an AMD athlon II x3, with the 4th core unlocked. Windows will boot up and use it just fine - it considers it a phenom II x4 b40. However, linux will not boot up as long as that 4th core is unlocked. grub is responsive but once it begins booting, it doesn't really do anything. its not just debian, its any linux distro.

i've never heard of linux having problems with core unlocking, and i have a pretty good motherboard (one of the top 5 socket am3 boards). i'm also very surprised to see windows somehow manages to accept this but linux doesn't.

Ubuntu :: Windows Vista Not Booting After Installing 10.04

May 5, 2010

I got this laptop today and decided to dual boot Linux, as I've been using it for a bit on an older laptop. I downloaded and installed Ubunutu 10.04, using the first install option to have it install next to Windows, and afterwards on startup I get 6 options: Whenever I try to boot with either of the Windows options, it goes to the Windows loading bar, then the screen goes black and the computer resets. I didn't make recovery disks. I already had Vista recovery disks and I did try that, but it said I wouldn't be able to restore the system with them. F11 on startup splashscreen does nothing.

General :: Installing Ubuntu 10.10 On A Windows 7 System (Dual Booting) With Radeon X300/X550/X1?

Oct 29, 2010

just like most Linux distributions, will happily co-exist on a hard disk with just about any version of Windows. This is a concept known as dual-booting. Essentially, when you power up your PC you will be presented with a menu which provides the option to boot either Ubuntu Linux or Windows. Obviously you can only run one operating system at a time, but it is worth noting that the files on the Windows partition of your disk drive will be available to you from Ubuntu Linux regardless of whether your windows partition was formatted using NTFS. To day I have installed Latest Windows 7 and Latest Ubuntu 10.10 on my office system (Dual booting). This two operating system which I installed in HP dx 7200 micro towers.

System Information
Operating System: Windows 7 Ultimate 32-bit (6.1, Build 7201) (7201.winmain_win7ids.090601-1516)

Ubuntu :: Hide The Windows Recovery Partition In Burg/grub2?

Dec 26, 2010

On my Samsung netbook, I have successfully got a pretty speedy dual-boot of Windows 7 Starter and Ubuntu 10.10

I set up Burg, to well, replace Grub2 in favour of a more attractive interface and so far so good. I know that I can hide the older Ubuntu kernels/recovery slots by pressing the 'F'key. However, the Windows recovery partition still shows up. So it looks like this:

Ubuntu - Windows 7 - Windows Recovery (vista)

Basically, how can I hide the Windows Recovery partition? If I ever do need to use it, I can access it alternatively by pressing F4 at boot.

Ubuntu Installation :: BURG - Can't Boot To Any OS

Thought BURG would be cool so I installed it. Something is very wrong. (See attached photos) all I get is the 1st photo, BURG version 1.98+20100623-1+karmic. If I tab I get photo 2. At this point I'd be happy just to restore GRUB2 & forget BURG but I can't even boot to any OS. I haven't had Ubuntu on this PC for long so maybe the best, or simplest option, would be to re-install Ubuntu- which would rewrite grub2.
