Ubuntu :: Borked Computer Installing Ffmpeg From Svn

Dec 14, 2010

I'm running 10.10 and I have an ATI HD5470 and I was trying to add VAAPI support. I was told to compile and install a newer version of ffmpeg from SVN, which I did. I had to uninstall all the current/medibuntu libav* codecs to do so. I want to uninstall it but whenever I try to do anything in Synaptic it tries to reinstall the standard codecs before it can remove ffmpeg so it says

Code:

I can't uninstall this broken version and I can't get all the applications that had to be uninstalled back!

OpenSUSE Install :: Borked My WindowsXP Boot When Installing 11.3

Sep 28, 2010

I have an existing WinXP install on the main drive (/dev/sda) of a Dell laptop. I installed Suse on the second (caddy tray) drive and didn't touch the existing windows partition during install.

After install completed, I found there was no boot loader entry for WinXP during startup. Only SUSE-related stuff. I opened YaST boot loader and tried creating an entry of type "other" and device of "/dev/sda1" and set this as the default entry.

The /boot/grub/menu.lst file now has an entry:

When I restart the machine I get an error message:

General :: Installing Ffmpeg And Gcc - Error: No Acceptable C Compiler Found In $PATH

Jan 17, 2010

I am running a server which is hosting a site where members can upload videoclips. I noticed that upon upload a thumbnail is not created for the videoclip. I found out that ffmpeg needed to be properly installed and in my case ffmpeg-php as the site runs on php. So far so good. I followed the instructions found somewhere to install ffmpeg-php but stall at the command: dot slash configure && make The error I get is:

checking for egrep... grep -E
checking for a sed that does not truncate output... slash slash bin slash sed
checking for gcc... no
checking for cc... no
checking for cc... no
checking for cl... no
configure: error: no acceptable C compiler found in $PATH

I presume it's because gcc is missing. how I can start tackling the problem and ultimately get gcc running so I can install the ffmpeg? I am really sorry I was hoping to elaborate a bit more but I get an error: You are only allowed to post URLs to other sites after you have made 15 posts or more. so I guess I need to wait and describe it differently.

Ubuntu :: Upgrade From 8.04 To 10.04 Borked Compiz

Nov 25, 2010

The upgrade went fairly smooth, with a little effort got everything working except for Compiz. I couldn't enable desktop effects. So I decided to completely remove compiz with Synaptic and re-install. After removing compiz, compiz was no where to be found in Synaptic. Where did it go? How can I get compiz back? I have a NVIDIA GeForce 8600GT video card using the 256.53 driver.

Ubuntu Installation :: GRUB Is Borked After Last Update?

Sep 7, 2010

Whilst I've been using Ubuntu for years now, I don't really do much at the command-line, basically because I don't *have* to (which, to me is the beauty of this OS!). However, the last update via update manager has rendered my dual-boot with Vista on an Asus laptop non-functioning (at least Linux). What happens is this: after the BIOS splash screen, it says starting GRUB and then, instead of a menu of current and recent Linux versions and the Vista option at the bottom (white text against colour background) it now just shows one line of the menu in magenta... the rest of the menu is black, but the arrow keys will show the other options. Hitting ENTER does nothing: the text line is replaced with a blinking underline which goes back to the text in magenta again when i hit ESC. I can't seem to ESC or SHIFT to GRUB's command-line prompt at all. I've boot to the LiveCD and ran a boot_info_script in bash: here is what that revealed:

Code:

Boot Info Script 0.55 dated February 15th, 2010
============================= Boot Info Summary: ==============================
=> Syslinux is installed in the MBR of /dev/sda
=> Windows is installed in the MBR of /dev/sdb

Ubuntu Networking :: Completely Borked After Reboot?

Sep 11, 2010

I made some updates and rebooted (out of necessity due to an old, mysterious glitch that made my keyboard stop working, along with cursors in text and most menus) and my laptop's networking stopped working altogether. Trying to access my home's wireless network only got me a "disconnected - you are now offline" after a long wait, which has happened before, but A) never before right after a reboot, B) the wired connection didn't work either when I tried it, which has never happened to me, and C) this persisted after another reboot.

Ubuntu Installation :: Windows 7 Borked Partitioning

Jan 1, 2011

I attempted to install windows 7 to the partition where vista was installed. The install failed, think it's a dodgy burn, and obviosuly took grub with it. However it's also somehow screwed up the partitioning of an extended partition where instead of two ubuntu's, a partition for my media files and test partition for chrome all is left is a big chunk of 'unallocated' and swap. I found a recovery tutorial here but the instructions are little vague.

Ubuntu :: Upgrade To Natty Has Borked My Desktop

May 22, 2011

I'm was running 64bit maverick on an intel i3 clarkdale desktop; pretty much vanilla with the compiz spinning cube desktop displaying on my 720p HDMI telly. On 'upgrading' to natty my pc refused to display anything on the telly but can still be connected to via ssh. Assuming unity was the culprit I installed gnome and deleted unity; after plugging in a VGA monitor I finallly got an output onto a display device, then managed to configure the HDMI telly as a secondary display. Gnome is just a backdrop with no panels at all; I managed to get panels by ctrl-alt-T and typing 'gnome-panel &'; but this was only a temporary fix. If I try to run a terminal now it locks X and I can only restart via the ssh session.

Currently all I have if I boot is the gnome backdrop. The pc auto logs on (as it did under maverick) so alternate logon screens can't be accessed as pretty much all I can do is run stuff via an ssh shell on my other pc.

What I'd like to do is have my desktop how it was before natty trashed it. Preferably without unity or its very irritating scroll bar widgets.

Ubuntu :: Installing On A Computer With Little Or No Internet?

Oct 1, 2010

I live in northern Canada. I am not in a high speed internet zone but use an alternative method which I pay lots of money to get high speed. However I am restricted to 5 GB of traffic per month.

Now I have to computers running Ubuntu. So for example, if I want to install TuxPaint on my first PC then I would go to the software center and it would download then install the software for me. Now if I wanted to install the same program on my second computer it would download it again. The problem is that this would download twice as much from the internet. Is there any way that I can save internet bandwidth by using the download files from my first computer to install the program on my second computer? Similarly, can I only download updates once but install them on both computers?

Installation :: Looking At Installing Ubuntu In My Computer?

Jun 22, 2011

My only interest in Ubuntu is that I want a reliable trouble free as nearly as possible computer. I know absolutely nothing about the inner workings of one and have no interest in learning about them. I am a 77 year old retired seismologist on a fixed income so you can understand my reasons for want of a trouble free computer. The current system I have is a Dell Studio XPS with Windows 7 64bit. It is a little more then a year old and has had two crashes. The first ended with having to change the hard drive which Dell did with no charge to me. The second crash resulted in having to reinstall windows. I had the disk so that wasn't much of a problem, but without the disk I would have had a very expensive paper weight. My chief concern is about malware, spyware, viruses and what have you. I want something that not everyone is taking shots at. If I were to install Ubuntu I would want it to be able to do what I currently do and do it without fear of it crashing or having to update it every week or reinstall it every year. It would have to work with the printer and scanner that I had to buy because drivers weren't available for the older printer and scanner I have.

Ubuntu :: Installing On Broken Computer?

Feb 13, 2011

I want to install ubuntu on my internal harddrive. The reson is that my laptops screen is broken, and im not able to switch to external screen in windows.

Is there some kind of shortcut in linux which switches to vga output? If not, all this will be time wasted...

If there is:

I tried to boot from both USB and cd, but apperantly its set to boot from harddrive. Again, my screen dont work so i cant change the boot order.

So, is it posible to take my laptops internal drive, hook it up to another computer using sata-->usb adapter, and then install ubuntu on it. Put it back into the computer. And then just boot it as normal?

Ubuntu :: Borked Hard Drive - Foxing & Recovering Data?

Oct 4, 2010

OK, was trying to make a live-usb boot partition on my 1.5TB HD; in doing so clicked a 'wipe disk' button.

A second later I realised what I'd done, clicked cancel (frantically), tried to unmount the drive but was told 'volume busy'. In a panic, unplugged the drive. Unsurprisingly, the drive is now a mess.

I'd had 1 30G FAT32 partition (empty) at sdd1, 1 1.5TB ext4 partition with about 500G of data at sdd2. Now according to gparted I have an unrecognised filesystem type; according to the 'Disk Utility' I have an unmountable 1.5TB FAT32 drive.

I know NOTHING about data recovery. If it's just a case of running a couple of magic 'check & fix' programs then I should be OK, but anything else and I'll have to take it to more skilled friends.
