Nothing happens at all and I can't locate the executable file
I use the 64bit edition of 10.10. Tried total removal and re-installation from Ubuntu Software center but no joy.
Update Manager gave the following message:

View 1 Replies View RelatedI have a compaq nx7010. It started out with 8.04 or perhaps 8.10. I upgraded it through to 9.04 when that became available. I have not upgraded to 9.10 year, because I recall it took me a fair amount of time to get my system working correctly after the 9.04 upgrade. At a guess, audio went down, wifi broke, and that sort of thing. I am now finding that apps I use are not releasing new versions compatible with 9.04. And I see 10.04 is on its way, and I understand it is best to go from one upgrade to the next rather than jump a release.
Here's my question:
I get the impression it is cleaner and more stable to do a clean install as opposed to an upgrade. I've also seen many people expressing that view. I've always just gone with upgrading because I didn't like the thought of having to set my whole computer up the way I like it, again. Is there a way to do a clean install that will keep my system the way I like it? For instance, to not have to reconfigure every application?
I have my partitions set up like this:
ext3 /home
ext3 /
linuxswap
Just how much config related stuff is stored in the /home folder? Or is this purely user files? What is the consensus? Is it better to upgrade or to do a clean install? My intention is to have a stable system that does not require hours of my time to get sound and wifi working, with the latest release on it (so that I can run the latest apps).

I am using the latest Ubuntu 10.04 Lucid lynx. Sometimes ago while I am updating my operating system to linux-image-2.6.32-25-generic (2.6.32-25.44) with update manager, after downloading all the files it was running the installation. During installation suddenly my pc turned off, may be for some power issue. Then while I again start my pc and tried to restart the update process the update manager show me a message. "Not all updates can be install. Run a partial upgrade, to install as many as updates as possible."
This can be caused by:
* A previous upgrade which didn't complete.
* Problem with some of the installed software.
* Unofficial software packages not provided by Ubuntu.
* Normal changes of a pre-release version of Ubuntu.
Then I tried to open the synaptic package manager. But it didn't open either and show another message which suggest to run the command in the terminal: "sudo dpkg --configure -a". And unluckily it wasn't work. and show the messgae:
"dpkg: parse error, in file '/var/lib/dpkg/updates/0103' near line 0: newline in field name `#padding'".
I have a Dell studio running ubuntu for two years now. I had ubuntu 10.04, but a few days ago, the update manager started to bug me that some stuff don't work properly and that I need to to a partial upgrade. I postponed that for a while, and all worked fine, but I finally had sometime and clicked "yes", all began collapsing:
1) the update manager crashed while updating.
2) I rebooted and ran it again. same crash at the same stage.
3) I decided, god knows why, to do a full upgrade to 10.10, which also crasehd.
Now it won't even boot. It always get stuck at a line saying "no IPv6 routers present" or something of that sort. when I switch off manually the wireless switch on the laptop, the boot gets stuck a bit earlier, on a line that says: "laptop login:"
EDIT: I just remembered something which might be important: I had a hibernation problem on the upgrade to 10.04, so I played around a bit with that. now it uses libgcrypt, and I remember I set up something manually then, but I can't remember what.
I got a notification that there was an upgrade available today in ubuntu 9.10 64, after the update i restarted my system and while booting i encountered this error message:
Kernel panic - not syncing : VFS : Unable to mount root fs on unknown - block (8,17)
does this have something to do with the OS looking at the wrong hd?
theres no command prompt to actually do anything and i tried booting in safe mode and had the same problem. Let me know what i can do!
Firefox is having trouble displaying characters. At times, a web page will display only partial of a certain character, and it will affect every character on the screen. In other words, sometimes when I load a page, the bottom half of all the 'i's or 'r's are missing. The problem persists when I refresh the page, and resolves on its own. It will happen to most web pages. Also, at times, a white or black stripe will run through some characters, usually a heading title on the page. I'm running Firefox 3.6.10 on Ubuntu 10.10. I did a complete reinstall of Ubuntu 10.10 when it came out (i.e. I reformatted and installed 10.10) and have been having this problem since then. Never had the problem with 10.04, which I had been running since May. Firefox and Ubuntu are both updated currently.
Please note the attachments, where in one there is a problem with the letter 'i', and in the other, on the Heading "Search New Posts" there are white lines running through the words.
Currently running 9.10 and am interested in 10.04 upgrade but download manager tells me this is a 1.2 GB download and I have just a wireless connection making this a lengthy and tedious affair.Is there any way of doing a partial upgrade bits at a time without having to go whole hog?

Then the next time I boot ubuntu, internet doesn't work. The loopback interface is active, but the ethernet interface is not.
I've googeled for a solution, but can't find any.
This is the second time in 1.5 week. The first time I rebooted ten times or so and internet just suddenly worked again.
I accidentally installed a partial upgrade, and Empathy was removed from the indicator applet (next to Evolution Mail under the envelope icon). How can I restore it? PS: When this happened, I had no idea that partial upgrades could cause problems in our PCs, such as removing packages..

Viewing any source on the Web results in partial loading of data followed by broken up multiple lines. It is occurring now with this post. Paging down I get three lines of "submit new thread" until at the bottom are multiple lines (no characters) after "forum rules". I put it to my network provider who cannot come up with any idea of what may cause it. It cannot be the hardware as the same condition exists on two PC's. Both are on 11.2.

View 5 Replies View RelatedI have an older Dell Inspiron e1505. The hard-drive went bad years ago and I look to revive it. I purchased a new hard-drive and proceeded to install Windows XP Pro that I have a partial install of XP professional but do not have the key. Microsoft explained because I cannot find I would have to buy a new one instead of keeping my key within their Microsoft store. So instead of purchasing a new key I would like to install the latest version of Ubuntu and go the Linux route.
I downloaded the latest version(non pc I believe) and have it booting of the Cdrom. I am now stuck because it bypasses the cdrom /disk and starts to load XP home again. Will continue to research as I move forward but would definitely like some pointers on what I can do as far as removing the partial install of Windows XP home.
Did an upgrade today from 9.04 to 9.10. As far as I can tell, everything is working, with the exception of Firefox 3.5.6 with new install. I've attempted an uninstall and install. Tried the following with 3.5.6:URL...I finally found that if I use sudo (or gksudo) I can run firefox at the command prompt. Any other time I run it, it just shows an icon on the lower bar and then it disappears, but within the system monitor it shows Firefox and will show as many as you run the icon with.
I've deleted the entire .mozilla directory, and manually removed all the firefox info fro /usr/bin also before a reinstall. I assume it is either a strange permission issue or some link related issue."which firefox" shows:/usr/bin/firefox and the 3.5.6 files are located /usr/lib/firefox-3.5.6 . Any help would be great, I'm at a loss at this point. I'm sure it's something simple, but it's a royal PITA.I have nxserver on the machine, if that means anything and there was a session locally as well as one remote during the upgrade (using the same account).
Just upgraded to 10.04 and Firefox will no longer start. I get the tab that says starting firefox, and then the tab disappears, and I never get a window.When I try to start via terminal it says (something along the lines of):Attempting to load libmoonloaderxpiSegmentation FaultI tried logging out and back in, no dice; restarted, no dice; uninstalled and reinstalled firefox, no dice.Running x64, if that matters, on a pretty decent laptop. But I updated to 10.04 because I was two updates behind and now I still have 1 issue I haven't figured out. It isn't huge, but just annoying. I can't print from firefox. I have a wireless printer hp officejet J4680, and get the following error in the messages log.
Not sure what the translation for this is. This is what I get when I try to print from firefox. Opera works, office works, just doing an lpr command on something I had firefox save to a file works. So I don't think it is drivers, the update or anything else outside of something again ridiculous firefox doesn't have working yet. Anyone run into this or know where the patch is. I haven't been able to find anything. Have tried purging cups reinstalling. updating firefox etc. just nothing hit the target. Like I said firefox is the only thing not working. I can print from opera and office.
I've just completed my upgrade to Natty Narwal and everything seems fine. I am able to open most if not all applications, all except Firefox. I've tried opening it and the egg timer/wheel spins and then returns to arrow without actually opening firefox. Ive been into the software manager and unintalled and reinstalled Firefox but it doesnt make any difference.
View 4 Replies View RelatedToday I tried to upgrade from 10.04 to 10.10. It got through probably 50% of the install and then everything froze. I had to hard restart the computer, but when I try to boot to ubuntu, it just gives me a prompt and acts as if everything is wrong. I have tried a few things (sudo dpkg -configure -a; sudo dpkg -reconfigure; etc..) but it all seems to lead back to the prompt with no success. Is there anyway to recover my upgrade? Do I have to resort to a reinstall of ubuntu and lose all my data?
View 9 Replies View RelatedI recently upgraded from 9.04 to 9.10, and Firefox is painfully slow to use. Changing between already loaded tabs takes almost a second. Scrolling through a loaded tab is also slow and jerky. Other programs (e.g. Thunderbird, or just browsing the filesystem) also seem slower when Firefox is running.
I'm running Firefox 3.5.6. My PC is Compaq Presario 2200 laptop (about four years old) with 768 MB RAM. As another data point, I also have the most recent version of Linux Mint installed on the same PC, running Firefox 3.5.3, with no problems. I've searched, and some problems have apparently been due to DNS problems, but I have problems when I'm offline (wifi physically removed), looking at webpages saved on my disk, which are already fully loaded, so it's not a DNS problem. I did try steps 1 - 7
I can't save files with the .hqx extension for some reason. Firefox was recently upgraded to 3.5.7 via Update Manager. Nothing happens when I click on a link pointing to a .hqx file no download status window. I can see that something is trying to download but it is not saved to disk. (Yes, I checked /dev/null first).My first stop was to edit > preferences > applications to see if the extension definitions got borked during the upgrade. Everything seemed normal except for the fact that I couldn't see an entry for .hqx files and no apparent method for manually adding it to the list. I went to another site that I administer and successfully download a .pdf file

View 10 Replies View RelatedI just recently upgraded my Firefox browser from version 1.5 to 3.0.4. on Mandriva 2007 Powerpack. I had several problems with the installation, but I need some advice with this one problem.
With the new 3.0.4 installation when I press the "Clear Cache" button within Preferences, a cache does clear somewhere but I get no change of state on the "Clear Cache" button and a blank applet screen appears. If I go into the files to the .../home/scott/.mozilla/firefox/85if17gs.default/Cache folder, I find 54MB of cached files stored. I tried deleting the files through Konqueror and I get a screen saying "I can not delete the files"
I have my cache limited to 50 MB in the Preferences section. Where is the new cache folder ? Should I delete the entire Cache folder ? Will Firefox create a new one ? The /.mozilla/... directory was created with the Firefox 1.5 installation, I never checked to see if the directory had been revised with the upgrade to 3.0.4. Any ideas ?
on 9.10 system reported partial upgrade and after I let it do that (which was a BIIIIIG mistake) I can;t install nvidia drivers anymore.tried via Hardware Drivers and via Terminal
View 1 Replies View RelatedJust wondering if anyone else has this partial upgrade being offered to them: ffmpeg, libavdevice52, libpostproc51, libswscale0 are held back (grayed out) in Update Manager.
I only use Update Manager manager to see if there are any updates and then use sudo apt-get update, sudo apt-get-upgrade and sudo apt-get dist-upgrade to actually examine the updates as it shows if anything will be removed without anything to replace it.
And I know to never do a partial upgrade.
Update Manager displays "Partial Upgrade" with the files listed above grayed out.
I did use sudo apt-get-upgrade to install a few packages earlier that were safe to install and now -
sudo apt-get-upgrade currently gives this output:
