I just upgraded to 10.04 from 9.04 and I cannot log in to the machine. I tried launching the on-screen keyboard but it just flashes and disappears. Anyone else having this issue?I also tried attaching a different USB keyboard, but that didn't work either.
View 9 RepliesJust before Lucid was released, I installed karmic on a vanilla VM in 64-bit mode, and all was good. Did a desktop setup and afterwards installed Eclipse, and I was happy: A new system for coding on-the-go! Now, after upgrading to Lucid with do-release-upgrade -d, I can no longer enter my password on X login. The keyboard just doesn't work for some reason. When I enable the onscreen keyboard, and click my password, I can login. The strange thing is that my keyboard works like a charm after I've logged into my X session?

View 1 Replies View RelatedI just upgraded my 9.10 x64 Server to 10.04 using the standard Update Manager (I have the GNOME desktop installed). The installation went very smoothly, no errors or problems that I noticed. However, after reboot I get the main log in screen, but I can't enter my password because the keyboard seems to be ignored. The mouse is fine, no problems there. I looked at the various keyboard possibilities, and it has choosen the basic "USA" keyboard. It doesn't matter which keyboard type I choose though, it still fails to respond to any keyboard keypress. To be clear, there were no issues with the keyboard before the upgrade. I don't know where to start.
View 3 Replies View RelatedAfter upgrading to 10.4 from 9.8, my keyboard wouldn't work on the startup menu, I then went to the console and it worked perfectly. I'm new to Linux so don't know a lot about it. I also tried to reinstall it using:
sudo dpkg-reconfigure -phigh -a
But it always stops and return "This page is not dpkg-info anymore, but GNU install info

View 3 Replies View RelatedI let the update manager run overnight on my netbook because it was taking a while. When I woke up, my netbook was off. It may have shut off during the updates. Now, when I turn it on, it gets to the login screen but the keyboard and mouse don't work. Is there anything I can do without a Live CD? Unfortunately I don't have a flash drive or anything with me.
View 1 Replies View RelatedI tried to use the automatic upgrade to version 10 last night on my Acer Aspire 8930G. Everything seemed to work fine until I got to the reboot. At the reboot it tells me that it is running in low resolution mode because the nvidia drivers have been removed. That is fine except I cannot hit the enter button to accept the message either using the laptop keyboard or by restarting and using a USB keyboard.
I have a dual boot with windows and I'm averse to just reinstalling ubuntu because there is some data which would be annoying to lose.
I am using 10.10, yesterday I did an upgrade using update manager. After restart, booting stops at login screen, keyboard and mouse is not working. I tried login into recovery mode as well as previous kernel versions nothing is working. I tried to login into single user mode even that is also not working.
View 2 Replies View RelatedI just upgraded to 10.04, all went well, except now the "s" and "m" keys on my keyboard open the login menu and the "Me" menu (with the mail and chat options) respectively. Obviously this is very irritating, I can only type those letters by holding down alt. I can't think of how this happened, it didn't do it before the upgrade. I'm using an Apple aluminum keyboard with a Dell. When I run xev and type the s or m key, I get this:

There are no relevant shortcuts under keyboard shortcuts. I am using a xmodmap file that looks like this:

previosuly installed products that mapped keys, but I dont have and have never had any of them. reset the keyboard to default settings, which I happily did to no avail.
So for me, since I upgraded, keyboard input (either local or via VNC, so it isnt hardware) does nothing for either the caps lock key or the shift key. Kinda makes it imnpossible to eneter @ or any uppercase character, for example !
I have a Xenta micro wifi keyboard which worked fine with 10.04 but after upgading to 10.10 it pairs Ok it does not work. In 10.04 all I had to do was enter the pin on the wifi keyboard.In 10.10 the pin has to be entered on the wifi and local keyboards.

During the installation BUG USB (blue screen) error comes and laptop restarted. Now i restarted the laptop and from now my mouse and the keyboard not working. I recently tried to upgrade my Dell Latitude C610 from 10.10 to 11.04, but it got kernel panic right in the middle. Now it at least boots, but the mouse doesn't work--only the keyboard does. How do I fix this enough to use the mouse, or how do I operate Gnome with a keyboard?
View 2 Replies View RelatedI had a hell of a time getting 10.04 to work, because I only have a Logitech Dinovo Edge keyboard, and it stopped working after I upgraded. After grub, I'd get to the login screen, and the keyboard wouldn't do anything.
First, I dug up a mouse that did work. Then I logged in by clicking the Human Accessibility icon on the login screen. Somewhere in there, I was able to bring up an on screen keyboard. With the on screen keyboard, I could now login. Under system>preferences>bluetooth, I was able to, after some fiddling and plugging and unplugging, get the keyboard paired to the bluetooth dongle. Anyway, it seems pretty obvious now that my original bluetooth pairing was lost with the 10.04 upgrade, and I just needed to re-pair. I don't remember having such problems on previous upgrades, though.
Running Landmarq Intel Atom DC330 Desktop I have just attempted to upgrade my desktop machine from Kubuntu 10.04 to Kubuntu 10.10. I used KpackageKit to do the upgrade which proceeded smoothly until the install packages phase, which seemed to complete and then repeat. I don't know the detail of what happened as I was out of the room.
The repeat almost completed, but then I got a set of error messages, which basically told me that KpackageKit was unable to install the upgraded packages. I closed KpackageKit, and closed the machine and tried a reboot. This time, I got as far as the splash screen, but although the cursor flashes, I can't type anything in the password box. In addition, the mouse pointer won't move. Using a different wireless mouse works, but I still can't type in a password.
However, the command ctrl+alt+sysrq+RSEIUB works, so the machine is accepting some keyboard input. I also know from using a live disc that my home directory is intact. I would like to revert to my 10.04 installation, and re-try an upgrade to 10.11 afterwards.
two days ago I updated my Fedora 11 to Fedora 12 which seemed to run fine at first ... until it rebooted after the update process. I was presented with the following error:

Approximately 5 seconds afterwards it tells me, that the root device was not found. My root volume is a LVM inside a LUKS container, so I guess the keyboard error from above implies that it can't query me for my passwort and therefore open the volume.
I cannot use several keys (1,`, q, a, z & Esc) on my keyboard.I have just installed Kubuntu 11.04, AMD64 version via Wubi. Everything went well w/o any errors. At 1st boot, I also logged in w/o errors, and then tried some apps for Office & Network and shut down. The keyboard was still alright at that time. However, The problem started on the 2nd boot after the installation. Those keys do not response in Kubuntu & Windows 7 login screen and even in my PC's BIOS setup.
My laptop model is Dell Lattitude E6410, core i5, Intel HD Graphics, WD HDD 160GB. And I installed on the other partition, not my Windows one.
I've just ran the upgrade from 9.10 to 10.04 via the online update manager. It rebooted and now hangs at the text screen before any graphical login screen appears. The last line on screen appears to show a failure to connect to a cifs share on my other windows computer.
I've tried to select the recovery menu, which then appears but the keyboard does not allow any of the options to be selected with the arrow keys or any other I tried, I've tried a ps2 keyboard and that doesn't allow any selections either. But it is possible to use ctrl-alt-del to reboot from this non responsive menu.
i've created a completely new user, so config files for fluxbox/unity/gnome cannot be the problem. when i try to login with this user in gdm, the screen goes black for a few seconds and gdm displays again.
tried:
- new user without any gnome/unity/fluxbox config
- tried "ubuntu", "ubuntu-classic", "ubuntu-classic without effects", and "ubuntu-classic safe mode"
- did aptitude purge gdm & installed it again
- nvidia module is loaded properly
- no errors in /var/log/Xorg.0.log
- login with NXCLIENT on this server works perfectly fine

I upgrade my system from 9.04 to 10.04, then when booting, I get the purple wallpaper and mouse, but nothing else, No login menu. I can hopefully connect to my system with ssh from another machine, I update everything, upgrade, etc etc, try to boot on recovery mode, and clean packages and so one...Nothing happens, still no login menu.
View 8 Replies View RelatedRecently I decided to upgrade my 10.04 installation the lazy way, by clicking the upgrade button instead of a clean install (32bit). Now, I can only get into Ubuntu with the recovery mode. If I let the system boot the normal way, I end up at the login screen where I (correctly) enter my password and then nothing else happens. I can move the mouse, the clock ticks on, and I can even use the restart button, etc. But the login screen stays gray and does nothing else, so no desktop. With recovery-mode I can use the failsafeX option to get into the desktop, everything works fine there. And even though it calls it a low-graphics environment or so, everything looks normal, its even my native resolution of 1440x900.
My first idea was some driver issue for my Ati Radeon HD 2600 Mobility card, so I looked into that. I've checked/done the following:
- Installed the drivers manually (downloaded from AMD)
- Uninstalled those drivers
- Used aptitude to remove any fglrx things
- Installed Jockey
- Installed the drivers with Jockey
- Removed the drivers with Jockey (Ive read this is the cleanest option)
- "no drivers" at this point
- Use generic/default X config, make specific X config (both from the failsafe X boot thing)
Nothing worked at all, booting still only works with recovery option and then the low graphics mode. Otherwise, it will just "hang" on the login part. When I boot first recovery mode, and then pick the resume option, I'll see some errors near the end of the booting process.
I've seen 2 errors which might be related to my issue:
- "Unable to allocate crypto cipher with name [ecb(aes)]" (home is encrypted, and accessible with safe boot)
- BUG: CPU#1 stuck for 61s!
Now, the second error seems to "match" with hanging at login. I login, something is stuck and churns the CPU... and never gets unstuck, so login just hangs there. However, I can't find any information related to that stuck CPU thing. Only changing PIDs and other numbers/stack traces, no processname or any other name to work with. So I'm at a loss here.

Despite that with low graphics mode everything works, it seems to be a non-graphical issue here (stuck CPU on some process?). Unless I missed another option I can test for the graphics / drivers. ow I could find more info on stuck CPUs during boot?
I just finished the upgrade of 10.10 to 11.04, restarted and now i can't login anymore, i'm stuck in an endless login loop.
1) Boot
2) Xorg starts
3) I see my user, login
4) Screen goes black like it's loading
5) Loop back to login
It's not a password issue, i can login in command line It's not a profile issue cause i tried creating a new user from the command line and it still loops. I looks briefly at the /var/log/... but i couldn't find anything relevant,respond ASAP this is my work PC.
I thought it would be simple since it's a very simple a relatively new machine (2months ago)
Right after I type in my username and password and hear the usual login sound I have to wait about 15 to 20 seconds to get the X desktop. The system load average monitor is at its max and starts to become lower.If I log out and in again I dont get that delay. It only happens with logging in after a reboot/power on.I tried to open a console (Ctrl+Alt+F1) before I log in, move back to X and login then jump to console and use htop to see what's eating up my resources during that time with no luck. Everything seems to be normal.
View 3 Replies View RelatedI had a working workstation with Karmic. Then I decided to upgrade to Lucid. Bad move, it turns out.First the upgrade crashed. Just stopped doing something for hours on end, and I eventually had to reboot. After that, I had to apply lots of apt-get and dpkg love to get the machine to book. Now, I *think* I have a Lucid system, at last. Only that it doesn't work where the Karmic system used to...Our setup uses kerberos and autofs. To begin with, the upgrade lost my /etc/krb5.keytab (making it impossible to log in), but that can be easily replaced.Now, I can log in, but my home directory doesn't get mounted. I did an upgrade on my system yesterday. After the completion of the upgrade on restarting the system the computer enters tty1 mode straight without giving me the GUI login screen making it difficult for me to work. The question does now is what could have caused this to happen ? Have i gottten something wrong somewhere?
To switch to tty7 mode i hit the key crtl+alt+7 but it gives an error message about an unknown user even after login in with my username and password on tty1. Start the computer on recovery mode and selected the option correcting broken packages and it produced a result requiring me to download some new packages. I have a huawei e1550 modem which i use to browse in Nigeria. I want to know how i can connect to the internet on the tty1 after insertion of the modem so i can download the necessary packages it requested on issuing dpkg command
Today I was prompted to upgrade to Ubuntu 9.1, and then again to 10.04
Doing these upgrades wreaked havoc on my system. I have been able to fix most of the problems that were caused but I am having trouble finding information on the following:
When I boot up the system and after passing the GRUB loader, the system freezes up at the login screen and I have to power down.
If I hit ESC at the GRUB screen and choose Kernel 2.6.32-25-generic (recovery mode) and then choose "failsafe graphic mode", then I am able to log in to GNOME as normal.
I have dell d630- 64bit version So i upgraded to the latest alpha and my system gets stuck at: as far as "Checking battery state" and hangs, i can login to the separate console and run startx but then no window manager is comming up so again, another ubuntu upgrade and another failure
