I have installed linux on a virtual machine in Oracle VM VirtualBox because I want to run linux while running windows at the same time. I was wondering if there is any difference between a real linux system and a virtual one for learning purposes.

View 7 Replies View Relatedknow of a way in Linux to have a virtual ethernet (e.g., eth0:1) appear as a "real" ethernet (eth1)? I ask because I have an old Shuttle box that only has one mobo ethernet and no way to add more. I'd like to use it in my Oracle RAC lab, but RAC requires two physical ethernets. You can't fool it with eth0 and eth0:1. RAC won't setup correctly if there's only one eth adapter, so I'm wondering if there is a way to fake two ethernets. I do not care about performance or reliability - it's my home lab. I fully realize that this violates every principle of HA, but I'm just using it to study. Worst case, I can get a USB dongle ethernet adapter, but I'd prefer to avoid the cost if possible.

The thing is, I don't have the time to reinstall ubuntu and all the programs and move my docs.So i wanted to copy/move the content of my virtual HDD to put it on a real one. It is stuck on a 1680x1050 resolution and in the system display settings the menus are disabled since there is no detected real display connected.
I need to lower the resolution to e.g. 800x600. code...
I've been running Sony Vegas in VirtualBox. My machine is dual core 2ghz and has 2 GB RAM so the VB gets 90MB video and 950MB system. XP is 32 bits. I also have the identical set up installed natively. The native version gets the full 2 GB system and 512 video. A non scientific test tells me the VirtualBox system is faster. My camera is a new T2i which produces .MOV files. The only program that can read them without stutter is VLC in Ubuntu. Quicktime in both Windows version stutters all over the place. VLC in Windows is so bad I deleted it.
To the point: I'm going to build a new system for video editing using at least 8 GB RAM and Windows 7 (Sorry, I don't have the patience to wait for Lumeira or Lightworks). I like the fact that I can be in both environments without booting. But, I'd like some real world advise about this. In a pure 64 bit environment, will I be better off in a dual-boot situation or virtual? I'm reluctant to load up W7 on my current system because of the hassle associated with getting a new registration for the new system.

There is an ip address of 10.0.2.15. Ping doesn't work (ping 10.0.2.15). Should I just go ahead and assign a 192. address to this box before I go any further? It would seem that at this point the system isn't actually a part of my local network and I don't imagine it would be unless it has a 192 address.

I have a real system user say 'test', created in a number of system groups, up to 3 additional groups (including ftp of course). Its set to the usual standard directory /home/test. But what if I wanted to use /home/test as their home directory but login to what would be unknown to them to be ProFTP to make them go in say [URL] or something random like that, how is this done? Just been through things like this:

View 7 Replies View RelatedWrong system clock; Right hardware clock. 'date' and 'hwclock --show' show big differences in time. Hardware clock keeps the correct time, but 'date', the system clock, doesn't (often wrong in a matter of hours). So I'm sure it is the problem of the kernel. I'm tired of synching hardware clock with the system clock all the time. How do I get Ubuntu to use the hardware clock instead of its own in the first place?

View 1 Replies View RelatedI am newbie to linux, I am dealing with Fedora core 13. I have already succeedded in building an ad hoc network and a WLAN network. My next step is to get some networking statistics such delay, throughput, etc. So, I need traffic to flow through the network for both multimedia traffic and bulk data traffic. How to send files between nodes on the network (I found commands ftp, rcp but do not know whether they are the correct choice for this). ID their any application to perform this?
Also, I want to perform some video streaming between two nodes to study the behavior of real time data transfer. Is thier any application to perform this?
I am just out of curiosity working with honeypot and found there are two way for arpd to route the unused IP to honeypot with blackhole and arp spoofing.Now to test, I am arp spoofing 5 machines from 192.168.100.41 to .45 and also honeypot is monitoring this range too. But I have setup a real machine with webserver in between this range and gave IP address 192.168.100.45.Now logically as arp and honeypot both are monitoring this range so they capture this request as below from log:

Now arpd is redirecting the traffic to honeypot machine as there is a real system with real MAC address. But from 192.168.200.10 I can also view the webpage of 192.168.100.45 machine. But most of the time it says "Connection Timed out".
Should it be acting like this or it shouldn't be showing me the webpage at all?
So yeah I want to transfer my system to the real Ubuntu. Problem is I can't boot into my Wubi Ubuntu cause I lost boot.

Then it thinks it's installed because it doesn't install again have to force it the second time. Can't remove it though because that doesn't think it's there.
How to check or find the real package name which must be installed for errors below:
There are to many package name if i search using (example) "yum search PythonLibs" or "yum search Threads" or "yum search Libintl". Even sometimes, the yum cannot find what we looking for exactly.

View 2 Replies View RelatedOn my machine I currently have 2 internal HD's - sata 3 & running in ahci mode. The bios confirms that they are running at 6G/s. For typical every day use, running apps & such, all seems fine & the machine seems speedy. But when I go to transfer large folders, (20G+) I'm only seeing 70M/s top speed, with 20 to 40 being the norm. (Shoot, I got 20M/s transferring to a usb 2.0 drive.) It doesn't matter if this is from partition to partition on the same drive (A or B) or between drives, or the direction.
So my question is, shouldn't this be giving a LOT faster speeds? Even if the drives ARE at the low end of the speed chart, per say? (WD CAVIAR BLUE 500G & 250G 7200RPM) This also doesn't matter what OS's I'm using either. Also, what ARE the the real world speeds on this? What are YOU ALL getting?

Ive tried rt clicking on the top panel >add to pannel>notification area....yet it is still missing.I know that NetworkManager is installed, yet I cant even access it to connect to a wireless network. I'm able to connect to Eth0.I cant tell if my wireless card drivers are setup or not and if that makes a difference.

I'm using a fedora install mainly for audio work and have everything working well out of the box. My setup is simple:
-Direct cable from Guitar 1/4" > Sound Card input>Rakarrack Guitar Effects>Ardour>System Out
(Occasionally I put a synth/plugin like Zynaddsubfx or jackrack before or after rakarrack depending on what sound I'm going for)
-Jack for all audio transport with synthesizers
I have real time support with Jack and all other programs except Rakarrack. When I launch Rakarrack in the terminal, I get this message:

However, running rakarrack in root does not display this output, and I assume it has no problem getting real-time scheduling in that case. I did some google searches but the only similar issues that I find are that people can't get RT support in jack except in my instance, I do have RT scheduling with jack, but for some reason I can't get it in rakarrack unless I'm root.
[Edit] I actually have to run jackd and rakarrack in root to get rakarrack to use real time scheduling. But, it isn't necessary for any other jack compatible program that I know of. I'm actually not getting any real time scheduling with any jack application, even though Jack is reporting to be running in Real Time. However, running everything in root fixes the issue even though I would prefer to not have to run as root.
