Ubuntu Installation :: Lucid And Clear - Menu.lst ?
Jul 1, 2010
Ok, completely fresh install of lucid (64bit) on my asus deluxe msi with dual audio cards, dual hds, dual cpu(3.0 amd2) and a whopping 3.5 ddr2...
Everything works wonderfully, Except:
The old method of making sure windows booted first... Gone with Sarah on that plane.
Is that Lst, 1st, Ist or what on /boot/grub/menu.xxx?
Since this is a clean and good install, should I be worried that it's completely blank when I edit it?
knowing about 32x compatibility software would of been nice.

I've been meaning to ask about this since Ubuntu 10.10 launched. How come clicking the "Post message..." text box in the Me Menu doesn't auto-clear the text? You have to highlight the text, press Backspace and then post your message. Not very nice or intuitive. No biggie, just surprised it wasn't patched by someone within a day or two of launch as these things often are!

Last night I upgraded to Lucid from Karmic, and now I can't play any DVDs (physical or ripped). These worked fine in Karmic, but now when I select them, playback freezes on any menu, and I have to kill the front end process. Mythtv is set to use the internal player, but I have the same issue with VLC.

I was using lucid since beta 2 without problems, but since few days I can't get a menu when I click on the right mouse button. Doesn't work on the desktop or when for example I want to rename a file using the right mouse button. Is this a bug from gnome or a new properties?

Ubuntu Lucid not all the icons in the menus on the panel at the top of the screen are there any more.how do I get those back? I really miss my bookmarks icon, and the icons in the system menu. I don't care if the icons are there by default, I just want the choice of whether or not they are displayed.

Compiz stopped working entirely recently and I've been trying to reinstall different version, nothing helped. Now when I look at synaptics, the version of the different package (compiz, ccsm, bcop...) are of different version (from 8.2 to 8.6). It tried reinstalling only from synaptics and it didn't change anything. I'm not sure that'll fix my problem, but for sure it doesn't help. Does anybody know what repos i should use to get a clear installation?

In a dual Vista (pre-installed) - Fedora boot, I have run into a curious issue, that leads into a crash-causing memory fault when attempting to boot live CDs. After Dell technical support (inspiron 1720 laptop) confirmed (beyond doubt) that the problem is caused by the HD and not the memory chips as thought initially, they recommended reformatting the HD and re-installing everything from scratch. Since this is obviously a painful and costly (time- and data-wise) solution, I would like to see whether it might work to clear out the MBR, reinstall it from the Vista recovery CD, and then re-install GRUB somehow. Since this is an "in-principle" cure at present, I would like to seek wisdom and guidance here with respect to whether this approach makes sense and how it should be implemented.

I recently upgraded from Karmic to Lucid via the Update Manager. I would like to upgrade further by switching from 32 Bit to 64 Bit. I downloaded the Lucid 64 Bit ISO and wrote an install disk. When I reboot the computer with the install disk nothing happens.

9.10 has no menu.lst file and hitting ESC to does not bring up the grub menu. How can we set bootup options or boot an alternate kernel? I would really like to set the resolution at boot time so that my console (Ctrl-Alt-F5, for example) has 80 columns instead of 40. (What a stupid default, gigantic Commodore-64-like text!) It would also be nice if the Login screen could be set to the resolution that I want.
In previous releases, there were ways to do this. In 9.10, I haven't been able to figure out how.
Is there a document explaining all of the radical changes?

Canon MX320, MX330, MX860 printer installation on Kubuntu Lucid 10.04 AMD64 bit. I am sure Ubuntu Lucid is similar. Once I upgraded to Lucid 10.04 AMD64 bit I found that getting a Canon Pixma MX printer installed was not going to be easy. So I thought it help others if I posted my experience here. To pull this off you will need both the Debian package, (.deb), and the source package from either
Canon Europe: [URL]... Or Canon Australia: [URL]... NOTE: The only reason to get the source is to access the ppd files. They are in the Debian package but it is a lot more work to walk newbies through unpacking the .deb. Since there are errors in the source code it makes impossible to compile a driver. Therefore, you will need to install the 32bit Debian package and force the architecture, then add the correct printer driver from the ppd file in the source package. While these instructions worked for me there are a few assumption I make which mat affect your outcome. My MX860 has a wireless network connection.
In other words I have no idea if this will or will not work on a USB attached printer. (If someone would be kind enough to post back if they get that configuration working that would be cool.) The other assumption is that the general reader is relatively new to Lunix and the command line interface. The commands were cut and pasted from my working kconsole, so they should work for anyone. Here we go:........

After screwing up my current UNR install, I have decided to get a fresh installation of regular Lucid without all the BS that comes with the netbook remix, BUT when I boot from usb and start the process I can't get past the keyboard selection phase... it just hangs there forever. I tried making a usb with the alternate text based version too but it halts at the same spot, namely detecting hdd's. Now, I've installed the UNR previously from usb without any problems so something is wrong here, I just haven't got any wiser from reading whats online either. I checked the forums etc but didn't find any answers... I'm on an Asus Eee 1005PE by the way.

I downloaded the 32bit iso from the ubuntu website and wrote it to disc using imgburn.
The problem is that when i boot from cd i get the loading splashscreen with the 4 dots flashing then it loads the ubuntu background and my mouse curser spins around for awhile then tells me the installer encountered and unrecoverable error and a desktop session will now be run so you may investigate and problem or try installing again. When it reboots it asks for a username and password. i use ubuntu and blank and then it does a loop and the logon menu comes up again.
the computer is an old acer aspire running xp home sp2
i tried it on another computer a dell laptop running vista and it worked fine and can up with the menu and i clicked try now and it booted into the gui.

After upgrading to Lucid, I found that I still had a need for php 5.2, instead of the 5.3 that is installed during the Lucid upgrade. I tried the method found here:
[URL]
I added in /etc/apt/preferences.d/php all the packages that I use for php, including libapache2-mod-php5, installed, and ran a2enmod php5 before restarting apache. However, my browser still tells me if I want to download php files on my server. I cleared the browser cache, a2enmod'ed again, restarted apache2 again, and still the same.
how to get php scripts running again on apache.
EDIT: I should note I can get SOME php files parsed by apache, but some are not parsed. All files reside in some subdirectory of /var/www/.
