When installing ubuntu on a dual boot system, I noticed that it had the import option for basically the documents and settings folder from windows, which is brilliant I think, but my question is, if during the installation of ubuntu, I tell it to use the whole drive, will that option still be available? It's basically asking if I can do that before formatting the box.
View 6 RepliesI've been scouring the internet and these forums for answers and have yet to figure anything out.Here's the situation: My boss's computer (HP running Vista) decided it didn't want to boot anymore. (Error: Cannot find Bootlog.xxx) My boss used a recovery disk to attemp a 'repair' but unintentionally began a format cancelling it at 1-3%. I created a LiveUSB that I can boot off of, and Ubuntu recognizes 52gb of Data on the drive. However when I go to view the drive nothing is there. I am assuming that the 'page file' was deleted although the rest of the information wasn't.
My question is: Is there anyway to access this data although the information telling the computer what is there and where it is has gone AWOL?I'm trying to get the payroll information off of the computer so she can finish her taxes, I will be working on this all night. If anyone wants to provide real time help my AIM screen name is 'Fryphax'.
i had got an external USB modem, infact any indian would know that Reliance has this Net Connect which they give by which we can surf through the net. Although fedora is detecting this i dont know as to how i can browse the net using this since all the files are in .exe format which is only compatible with windows.

Any other specs needed will be edited into the OP. I go for Ubuntu 11.04, 64 bit. I try to install it and it goes to Busy Box, telling me that it can't find a medium containing a live file system. A little bit of googling tells me to try the 32 bit version instead.
So Another download and burn later I give installing the 32 bit version a shot. It goes straight to the purple loading screen with the Ubuntu logo in the middle and five color changing dots... And stays there. I left it for ten minutes and walked away, no progress. So I decided maybe I'd just go the Long Term Support Route and burned a disk of ten. Computer doesn't see the disk as a viable option - boots straight to Windows.
I just installed Ubuntu in full installation. But then my Windows 7 file went bye-bye. I tried to see if everything were really erased from my drive. But then it showed that I'm still using 40G out of 250G of my disk. Why is it like that? Can those file still be recovered? My Windows 7 loader was actually erased. Can I still install Windows 7 even if Ubuntu already used the whole drive? And also, how can I delete partitions to make my HDD turn into a whole and single Drive before I install Windows 7?

It seemingly worked as advertised, I labeled the linux partition as L and pressed finished. When I went into Windows Explorer and clicked on the L drive, though, a dialog box came up asking if I wanted to format the drive.

Like though my ubuntu will not be formated nor the bootloder but shouldn't the windows bootloader overwrite somethign and make it default? Thus making ubuntu impossible to boot?
View 4 Replies View RelatedI've been wanting to do this for a while and after upgrading some of my pc components I decided I would finally try to dual boot with full disk encryption on both windows 7 and Ubuntu 9.10. I managed to encrypt the windows drive with truecrypt and that worked. I installed Ubuntu 9.10 using the alternate cd and everything but /boot is in an encrypted LVM. Each OS is on a separate SATA drive the windows is on sda1 and ubuntu /boot is sdb1.
To setup the dual boot I started out following the tutorial [url] but its for XP and versions of ubuntu that use grub not grub 2. I ran dd as posted and saved the files it produced from truecrypt. I then ran into some problems with grub reinstallation so I simply reinstalled Ubuntu 9.10 from scratch again. This put grub 2 on the computer. I've managed to get it to add a Windows 7 option.
However, when the option is selected truecrypt comes up and says that the bootloader is corrupted and that I need to use the repair CD I burned before I encrypted the drive. My question is does anyone have any experience dual booting using Truecrypt on Windows 7 and LUKS/dm-crypt on Ubuntu 9.10 with grub 2? And how would I get the boot menu to work? I'd rather not reinstall but if I have to I have images from right before I encrypted so it wouldn't be the end of the world.

View 2 Replies View RelatedI was happily running F10 and against my better judgement when it offered to upgrade me to F11 I decided to give it a try. The F11 install hung at 893 of 1626 packages installed. Some SE Linux package was in process of install. On the next boot the installer fails to upgrade for a corrupted root. It says I can backtrack and do a full install, but crashes with a bug when I choose backtrack.
So here is my question - Can i edit the command line and tell the installer to full install rather than upgrade? Or am I stuck with downloading a DVD ISO and doing a full install that way. I've done F8, F9 and F10 so full install from DVD doesn't bother me.
I have a (partially) formatted DVD+RW disc, and need to do a full format in order for wodim to be able to properly write to it, since wodim does not do DVD formatting automatically, despite what its man page says. (I want to write using wodim, NOT growisofs, since wodim has a -pad option for zero-padding, and the -pad option to growisofs doesn't work when burning an ISO file.) ,
wodim -v dev=/dev/dvd -format
doesn't work on an already partly formatted disc, only an unused one. And
dvd+rw-format -force=full /dev/dvd
doesn't work either, claiming the command-line option is unimplemented (even though the usage is documented). Is there any natural way to do this, or do I have to do something ugly, like using growisofs to write an exactly 4.7 GB file to the disc?
My old computer came with two disks, with Windows XP on one. I installed Fredora on the other.
I also resized the c: partition on the first disk and added a second partition which I formatted as fat32.
I then mounted that partition with its entry in /etc/fstab such that I could write to it as myself.
I have a new computer, 64 bit and running Windows 7, which I want to organize roughly the same way. I will install Fedora 14 on its seond disk. I've shrunk the c: partition under Windows using Disk Management. I want to create a 100 Gb D: partition on the same drive in the remaining space, and I want to be able to access both c: and D: for reading and writing by root and I want to be able to access the d: drive for reading and writing also by myself. Since it is a 64 bit machine, my choices for formatting the d: drive are HTFS or exFAT. Does it matter which I choose so that I can do what I want? How does Fedora treat exFAT?
Can anyone remind me which packages I need to add in order to be able to read NTFS file systems from Fedora? Can I also write to such a file system as root?
Can I write to such a file system as myself if I mount it properly?
I was copying a file to my pendrive it was taking a very log time which was ridiculous so I cancelled it but when I reboot my sysem next time my root drive became almost full (20gb partition, 12gb was free before. now its only 3 gb is free) also my pendrive is dead in linux in window it says you have to format the pendrive before use it when I click on format, format stops and says you don't have permission. also Now I cannot write anything on my winodws c or d drive because of permission.
View 4 Replies View RelatedOn my Laptop is an 80 GB HD. I installed Windows XP first (at this point it worked perfectly) then installed on the same HD, but on other partitions Archlinux.
The whole thing looks like this now:
/dev/sda1 <--- Windows xp
/dev/sda2 <--- arch linux (/, etc, etc^^)
/dev/sda3 <--- homes
/dev/sda4 <--- boot partition (grub)
(I got no SWAP partition, I got 4gb RAM (well can only use 3, since my system doesn't support 64bit), and my friend told me there's no absolute need for a a swap :>)
Arch Linux is booting perfectly (and very fast), but Windows XP doesn't want to boot anymore :>
(Just if it's from any importance: In the partition program I took the "bootable" flag away from my XP Partition and set it to sda4 - I thought I need to do that, but now I'm not so sure anymore :P )
My entry in the file /boot/grub/menu.lst looks like this (I also tried various others)

When I boot and choose the Windows XP in the GRUB boot menu, the following message appears:
error 13: invalid or unsupported executable format
When I set root(hd0,1) to root(hd0,0) (what seemed the most logical to me) and boot again selecting the windows xp, then the GRUB cosole appears.
So what did I do wrong - or better said: what should I do now?
I have a Kingston 8gb Datatraveler that has been giving me troubles lately. For some reason after I delete files from it it still shows up as full and the files are shown in the hidden trash files. How do I get rid of these files? I can't delete them as they just show back up. Also, I tried to format the drive with gparted and it won't unmount. When I right click and select information, at the bottom it says: Unable to find mount point. Unable to read the contents of the file system. Because of this, some operations may be unavailable.
View 1 Replies View RelatedI downloaded the ChromeOS,the file that I downloaded is in .raw format, the site tells me that I must put the .raw image in the USB pendrive using ImageWriter(the site refers to the windows version).The problem is that the ImageWriter's version for Ubuntu cannot see files in .raw format, but only in .img format.I searched the internet how to put the OS'image this format inside the USB from Ubuntu but unfortunately I haven't found anything.

i have instaled ubuntu 11.04 wubi on my pc with windows 7. i installed and everything was going ok i navigate on ubuntu already. but the problems star here i went on my ubuntu to the partition section and i format my windows partion to be the home partion and changed the nfts to ext, i did the upgrades but i forgot that theyr running yet and i restart my computer when it boot again it gaves me an error:

and the windows7 says that i have to instal again. so i went to another pc and i made a cd boot and a pen boot. i burned the iso (downloaded from the ubuntu oficial site the 11.04 32 bit version) image to the cd and pen drive prperly, i adjust my boot options to star from usb or cd rom and nothing im struck.

The Windows server doesn't employ ICS (essentially is just a $1500 PDC ). where I could find a .ovm format image of a windows server installation? I'm guessing vmware would work in this regard, but I'm not fond of using purposely crippled software.
Now however its not letting me resize the Windows partition, mounted or unmounted. It currently occupies the whole disk. I would rather not reinstall the whole thing over again, but I will if I have to. Isnt there an easy way to shrink a Windows partition? I swear Ive done this before and it wasnt this hard. Could it be a problem with the Mint installer that now asks me if I want to unmount my disks before it goes into install mode? On this PC I would like to have

Our school introduced this OS called UBUNTU. I actually liked it, very much. They gave me an installation disk named Ubuntu 10.04 LTS Desktop Edition. So I asked somebody to install it for me. But there were some problems before he could even completely finish the installation. So I was the one ordered to complete the installation. There were 3 choices on the 3rd or 4th step of the installation process. By hit-and-miss, I choose the second one. The process went on safe and sound. It was alright for me to loose windows 7 loader but not the files and programs inside it. After the installation was done, I then started to explore.
I cant find my old files from windows 7. The whole disk was occupied by Ubuntu. My friend told me that Ubuntu will only occupy about 4G of the Disk only.My disk has a capacity of 250G. So if that's the case, then it should have left a free space of 246G. But when I took a check on my disk's availability, it showed that there is 210G of Memory Left. I was then wondering if that big memory are my old files from windows 7. Another thing is that those files are unreadable. I cant even see those files even if I "show hidden files". Can they still be recovered or not? I choose to reformat my whole drive.
