View 7 Replies View RelatedIs possible to make a folder permission like below?
-User can create files/folders in the shared folder.
-But the files/folders they created, cannot be delete/change by em.
(only can be delete by root users)
-Each new files/folders created will auto owner to root only.
I have a strange problem after downloading a movie file. I noticed that I don't have permission to delete or change anything on this folder and files within it. I am attaching a snapshot image of the folder. please someone help me to delete this from my computer.
View 2 Replies View RelatedI just set up an VPS with ubuntu. I made a user1 and gave it ownership
Code:
chown -R user1 /home/www
This user also have been given all the root privileges (I know it is not recommended!)
The problem is that each time I make new site, and user1 wants to upload (through ftp) files to /home/www/newsite I need to redo the the above command in order to be enable user1 to upload. Not only this, I need to rework permissions (744 for folders and 644 for files), otherwise the newsite throws permission errors message.
new to ubuntu and linux, and using Lucid 10.04 LTS ok, i'm trying to get XBMC going, and following a nice step by step instruction on wiki.xbmc.org, but now i'm stuck at this step... In Ubuntu the SVN Repositories are not automatically added. You must add them manually. First, download the SVN Repo Installer from: [URL] Extract it to the ~/.xbmc/plugins/programs directory. If this directory does not exist, run XBMC one time and then exit back to Ubuntu. The directory should now exist.
i ran xbmc once (after the video driver problem was solved, though it messed up my dual monitors, gotta figure that one out yet.) i got the zip file, it's in my downloads. now my newbness really shows... i can't find an 'extract' command for gnome, can't find the .xbmc directory using the file browser, can't figure out how to hunt for folders instead of files, and don't know how to look inside folders i don't have permission to, that is, i don't know if there's a 'sudo' like option for the file browser. i've been searching the forums, but without the correct search terms, i'm wading in an ocean. i really want to give ubuntu an honest try, but i feel like a foreigner. EDIT: btw, up to this point, the forums have been invaluable, you all are great.

So I threw in a livecd to grab the one folder I needed before I was going to wipe the drive, but apparently at some point this folder got permission locked, and it won't let me open it or copy it to an external through the livecd. Is there any way I can get at this folder?

I've set up smbd 3.4.7 on 10.04x64 LTS server. I've set up a couple shares and I'm having problems blocking access to certain directories using native file permissions. There is one directory that has folders for each sales rep to store their current list of quoted clients, I only want sales people to be able to browse the directories owned by themselves. Everything seems to be set up correctly in terms of user groups and permissions on the filesystem.
Below is marina, a sales rep, and brian, a super user of sorts.
id marina:
Code:
uid=1011(marina) gid=1006(office) groups=1006(office),1005(sales)
id nick:
Code:
uid=1000(brian) gid=1006(office) groups=1006(office),118(admin),1001(full),1002(processing),1003(management),1004(it),1005(sales)
Below is the directory with all the sales reps folders.
ls -la:
Code:
total 60
drwxrwxr-x 15 root it 4096 2011-02-10 20:06 .
drwxr-x--- 9 root office 4096 2010-11-19 12:40 ..
drwxrwx--- 13 katya full 4096 2010-12-07 12:36 Katya
drwxrwx--- 18 lana full 4096 2011-02-08 17:09 Lana
drwxrwx--- 23 marina full 4096 2011-02-10 18:09 Marina
drwxrwx--- 4 mike full 4096 2011-02-01 12:42 Mike
With this setup marina only be able to browse her folder, but she can browse all folders and has full write access to all folders. This leads me to believe something is up with the smbd.conf file, which is below.
Code:
[global]
workgroup = COMTREAD
null passwords = no
server string = Root Server
dns proxy = no
log file = /var/log/samba/log.%m
max log size = 1000
syslog = 0 .....
In this case the valid users directive would not work cause I am not making a share for each user. I had this on other shares like the db2 share. My windows box lagged heavily when I tried to access that share with an invalid user. How to deny users the ability to modify permissions I would also like to do that.
When browsing my external hard disk I noticed that Nautilus' side pane marks directories that contain files as empty. Is this a bug or a misconfiguration on my part?

View 1 Replies View Relatedhow to configure it. What I am trying to is this: I have a departmental folder housing two sub folders. The permissions on the parent folder for the department are 770 and the users from that department are all in a group based on their departments name.
One of the users who is granted access as a member of the group needs to be denided access to one of the two sub folders. How do I allow all users in the department into the first folder (this works already) but at the same time allow all but one into the second folder?

What I have so far is this:
Code:
find <path> -exec head {} ; | tail -2

Is there a way to add files/folders to a tar file?
I am using the tar command for compression.
I have a directory (let's say A) with a few hundred files and subdirectories and a copy of this directory (let's say B). All the files and subdirectories in B have a newer date than A. However only a few of them are really changed files. Is there a way to find those files and directories? Basically they have different sizes so this could be used to compare them with the files from A.
