View 2 RepliesI downloaded the ChromeOS,the file that I downloaded is in .raw format, the site tells me that I must put the .raw image in the USB pendrive using ImageWriter(the site refers to the windows version). The problem is that the ImageWriter's version for Ubuntu cannot see files in .raw format, but only in .img format.I searched the internet how to put the OS'image this format inside the USB from Ubuntu but unfortunately I haven't found anything.
View 2 Replies View RelatedI was given an Integral AES 256 bit encrypted usb drive. It isn't compatible with Linux which is annoying but i was wondering if i could format it and use it without the software? I have plugged it in and it comes up as a CD drive. I checked for it in Gparted but it doesn't show up there. Does anyone know how i could get the drive formatted? Just plugged in into a windows computer to see if i could format it there. Set it up but there is no option to format it upon right click of the drive.

View 8 Replies View RelatedI was trying to figure out how to generate compressed files in zip format and searched on here. The search produced a list of forum entries on the topic, but all of the instructions were on how to do it in terminal, how to download obscure programs and install them from terminal, then run them from terminal, with all these arcane sets of switches and parameters. Eesh.
It comes with Ubuntu, after all. In the case of zipping files, all you have to do is to go to the File Manager, find the file(s), select it or them, right-click on it or them, and select Compress and file type zip. It's so simple.
There have been a number of other tasks where I wind up spending hours figuring out how to implement the advice offered in these forums through Terminal. The folks who offer the advice often are so good at it that they leave out steps obvious to them, but that take a lot of work for somebody not as skilled at it to find out. After crawling through broken glass to get the job done, and normally screwing something up so it's not quite right once I get it going, I figure out how to do it through the GUI and find out it takes a fraction of the effort.
A co-worker was asking me if there was a way to recuperate his child's baptism photos from his HD after it had been reformatted following a crash. I heard that this was possible and even downloaded a few trial programs, but have yet to try them.

1. They play in xine straight off. Xine is in your synaptic
2. To convert quickly install dBpoweramp under wine again quick and no fuss.
When installing ubuntu on a dual boot system, I noticed that it had the import option for basically the documents and settings folder from windows, which is brilliant I think, but my question is, if during the installation of ubuntu, I tell it to use the whole drive, will that option still be available? It's basically asking if I can do that before formatting the box.
View 6 Replies View RelatedIs there a file system that both Mac OSX 10.5 and linux can read/write for large files (like 4gb files)? My desktop is Ubuntu and I run most from there, but I want to back up my MacBook and linux box on the same external hard drive. Seems there are some (paid) apps for Mac that will mount NTFS but I'm wondering if there is just a shared files ystem that will work for both.

So far so simple, but some of the values might have commas in them, which means they'll be split up. Is there a way to change this so that only commas not within quotes will be replaced with ? (e.g. make sed count number of " and if it finds a , after counting an odd number of " then ignore it?)

View 6 Replies View RelatedI use Linux for my everyday work but lately I've been faced with a trouble when I send out file printouts from my browser from my Debian system to (normally) window$ systems, where they are not readable. Is there a way for me to convert the postscript files into pdf format? Most window$ users will have some sort of pdf reader installed but I am still to find one user that has Ghostscript and Ghostview installed. where can I find the TTF fonts that are shipped with every standard installation of Debian? I'm sometimes forced to print files through a windows system and because the fonts loaded in that system are not the ones I use in Debian (URW Gothic L, as an example) I end up having my official documents disfigured. If I can carry around with me a ready-to-install fonts package I can get over this obstacle.

View 8 Replies View RelatedI've been scouring the internet and these forums for answers and have yet to figure anything out. Here's the situation: My boss's computer (HP running Vista) decided it didn't want to boot anymore. (Error: Cannot find Bootlog.xxx) My boss used a recovery disk to attemp a 'repair' but unintentionally began a format cancelling it at 1-3%. I created a LiveUSB that I can boot off of, and Ubuntu recognizes 52gb of Data on the drive. However when I go to view the drive nothing is there. I am assuming that the 'page file' was deleted although the rest of the information wasn't.
My question is: Is there anyway to access this data although the information telling the computer what is there and where it is has gone AWOL?I'm trying to get the payroll information off of the computer so she can finish her taxes, I will be working on this all night. If anyone wants to provide real time help my AIM screen name is 'Fryphax'.
Recently, my hard drive crashed. I was using XP and do not have my install discs (lost them 3 moves ago...). I make backups regularly and only lost roughly 3 days worth of material (nothing really important). On my other PC I've been running linux forever. I don't need windows and have installed a new HD in the PC and put fedora on there w/ no issues. Now historical email. There seems to be many workarounds for getting dbx files to mbox inside windows, but how would I accomplish this task without a windows install anywhere (Virtual installs are out as I do not have any install discs for windows anyways).
After a quick search, I only found one possible solution (in perl) and am looking for something that I don't have to program my self. I am a programmer by trade but have never programmed in perl (c++, FORTRAN, matlab, python... yes) and at this point, don't feel like learning new syntexs for this one problem (python has been my goto scripting language for everything linux...). Also if anyone has a link to a c++ lib(link to documentation?) that does the same thing... I might take a look at that and make a gui for it... then release it for others...
