Ubuntu :: Recover Files From Win7 After Full Installation

Sep 19, 2010

I just installed Ubuntu in full installation. But then my Windows 7 file went bye-bye. I tried to see if everything were really erased from my drive. But then it showed that I'm still using 40G out of 250G of my disk. Why is it like that? Can those file still be recovered? My Windows 7 loader was actually erased. Can I still install Windows 7 even if Ubuntu already used the whole drive? And also, how can I delete partitions to make my HDD turn into a whole and single Drive before I install Windows 7?

Ubuntu Installation :: Recover Corrupted System Files?

Jul 26, 2010

before i proceed,I'll like to say that I'm a complete newbie, but enjoying my time with Ubuntu.

Recently, due to hard disk failure, some of the System files got corrupted, I have no idea to which files, but booting Ubuntu from the latest kernel is not working, instead I have to select the previous version from the grub screen.

How to recover these files? Is there a way by which Ubuntu automatically scans and repairs the system files.

General :: Recover Documents And Files From Old Installation?

Mar 24, 2011

I spent about a year on linux and had all sorts of very very important documents and files saved in my system. I cannot stress the importance of these documents and know that I am retarded for not making backups. We will start another thread for people to yell at me if you want. Heres the deal, XP was installed on this computer yesterday. They did a boot from disc install, deleting the partition and installing a fresh copy of XP.

Now XP is back on this cpu. My question is, is there ANYWAY long, short, whatever that I can find those files or maybe go back to my old install of ubuntu? I've heard a lot about bootloaders and whatnot but I have to get those files. I have a bunch of assignments due and need these files.

Ubuntu Installation :: Recover Deleted Bootloader Files By Mistake (not GRUB)?

Mar 26, 2010

I cannot boot into by Ubuntu 9.1 machine.... Trying either GUI or rescue mode gives me the following error messages (which i copied by hand since they were in cli)

Code: mount : mounting /dev/disk/by-uuid/64e5cb0d-058a-4a4c-af4b-7afb6427a72e3 on root failed : invalid argument

mount : mounting /sys on /root/sys failed : no such file or directory
mount : mounting /dev on /root/dev failed : no such file or directory
mount : mounting /proc on /root/proc failed : no such file or directory

Target doesnt have /sbin/init The only thing i remember doing before this is deleting some bootloader files... but they were on another disk so I didn't think that it would affect my ubuntu install. Guess I was wrong how I can recover my system?

Ubuntu Installation :: Keep Windows Files On Full Format?

Aug 18, 2010

When installing ubuntu on a dual boot system, I noticed that it had the import option for basically the documents and settings folder from windows, which is brilliant I think, but my question is, if during the installation of ubuntu, I tell it to use the whole drive, will that option still be available? It's basically asking if I can do that before formatting the box.

Ubuntu Installation :: Win7 Bootloader Is Broken / Doesn't Seem To Detect The Win7?

May 2, 2011

I had vista installed, then I installed Win7 on a dif. partition. Then I installed Ubuntu 11.4 over the vista partition (formatted first), and now I can't get into Win7. I'm really at a loss. I've tried the Win7 disk, and it doesn't detect the Win7 installation. I've also tried sudo update-grub, and it doesn't seem to detect the win7 install either. I've tried making the Win7 partition bootable using gpart as well. I'd like to dual boot Win7 and Ubuntu, however I need to do that.

General :: Recover Files From Ext4 File System Overwritten By New Installation

Jul 3, 2011

My main hard disk died and I replaced it. After installing windows in a small partition in /dev/sda, I thought I will try linux mint and went for it. (I need windows to play AOE, but ubuntu is my primary OS)I didnt see the options properly or some distraction, I choose the "install alongside windows" option probably expecting it to install it in the unallocated partition next to the windows installation. I had completely forgotten my second internal drive /dev/sdb which has the backup data. Linux mint went and installed itself on that drive.

Is there a way to recover individual files from the second harddrive. Now if I boot or open it through live cd, all I see in the linux mint file systems. I want to aleast recover my CV/resume from the second drive. The second drive is a single ext4 file system The old drive is completely dead, it doesnt even get recognized when I attach it to SATA.

Fedora Installation :: Full Install F11 From Upgrade Files Download

Jul 29, 2009

I was happily running F10 and against my better judgement when it offered to upgrade me to F11 I decided to give it a try. The F11 install hung at 893 of 1626 packages installed. Some SE Linux package was in process of install. On the next boot the installer fails to upgrade for a corrupted root. It says I can backtrack and do a full install, but crashes with a bug when I choose backtrack.

So here is my question - Can i edit the command line and tell the installer to full install rather than upgrade? Or am I stuck with downloading a DVD ISO and doing a full install that way. I've done F8, F9 and F10 so full install from DVD doesn't bother me.

Ubuntu :: After Files Deleted Still Shows Up As Full - Shown In Hidden Trash Files

Mar 9, 2011

I have a Kingston 8gb Datatraveler that has been giving me troubles lately. For some reason after I delete files from it it still shows up as full and the files are shown in the hidden trash files. How do I get rid of these files? I can't delete them as they just show back up. Also, I tried to format the drive with gparted and it won't unmount. When I right click and select information, at the bottom it says: Unable to find mount point. Unable to read the contents of the file system. Because of this, some operations may be unavailable.

Ubuntu :: Undelete Files At All Possible To Recover?

Nov 11, 2010

If not at all possible with public tools, is it possible for experts to recover the files? (as in pay someone to do it), What happened is I accidentally deleted a few folders containing family photos and my text files for work, address books etc, just personal stuff I don't have backups of. (from a ext4 partition 'root')

Feel free to call me stupid, but I didn't notice I had deleted them before I did the following... I ended up copying enough data to the ext4 partition which completely filled it (less than 1mb remained), once I backed those up I deleted them (trash empty) a few days later I ran sfill to erase the originals.

Ubuntu :: Recover Brasero Truncated Files?

Nov 22, 2010

I used a bootable usb (Ubuntu 10.10) to backup files from an infected windows machine. I made backup DVD's using Brasero and disabled full windows compatibility when burning them to disc. The really dumb part was I didn't check the DVD's before I reinstalled windows on the drive I was backing up. They were all there, I assumed they were ok. The files on the DVD's (mix of doc, xls, jpg, etc.) won't open in windows or Linux. Anybody know of a way to recover them? From what I've been reading, it seems like I'm screwed, but I thought I'd check with the experts. Is there a specific way Brasero/Linux changes the file, and can that info can be used to change it back? I assume it just cuts the name/header to 64 characters and I'm SOL. I'm going to see what diskdoctor's recovery software can get back from the hard drive.

Ubuntu :: Rebuild Directory Structure And Recover Files?

Sep 2, 2010

I have a drive with an NTFS partition where all the files were deleted. What I'm looking for is a way to rebuild the directory structure and recover the files. I really, really want the directory structure as the partition contains 460 Gigs of data. Normally I would use the tools here: [URL] but I've never dealt with this much data before. Everything there that I've used creates a pretty messy dump however.

I have used ntfsundelete before but only for a few files at a time. I have no idea what would happen if I tried to run it on a partition of that size. I'm comfortable with data recovery but this amount of data is beyond me. I've run ntfsundelete with no args and from what I can tell of skimming the pages of output all the files are fine. The partition has not been written to.

Ubuntu :: Can't Recover Files From A PC That Crashed And Wont Shut Down

Apr 10, 2011

My wife's Windows Vista laptop crashed and now will not boot. It is a Compaq and when we turn it on it loads into the HP recovery program. The only option is to format the drive and reinstall windows.

We can't do this however because we need to extract the files for my wife's college classes. I was told that you can use an Ubuntu Live CD to access these files so I burned a CD with 10.10 on it. It access's the computer and it appears to access the folders from the hard drive but all the folders are empty. Also the partition appears empty as well.

I found a thread on here that mentioned that the file system needs to be closed for it to be mounted but the computer had to be forced shut down so that isnt an option. Also i read something about chkdsk /f.
