Ubuntu Installation :: Karmic Goes Muck-jumping Into Septic Tank
Feb 24, 2010
Karmic goes muck-jumping into the septic tank Been using Ubuntu Karmic 9.10 for a few months- but now it has a mind of its own. About a week ago, Firefox would crash for no apparent reason. Then it became an increasing event. Today, after using the machine normally for several hours, it started crashing Firefox and Yelp before they loaded completely. It crashed again and again until it finally froze,I had to do a hard reboot and then it would not load properly and then crash. I checked the event logs and saw some warnings about an ALSA bug and then more as it deteriorated.
Now it seems to boot but then when the Ubuntu logo shows up all it does is flash for a few minutes and then the screen goes black and the system freezes. I tried using the recovery disk, but after 1 1/2 hours of black screen it reported HD Error 0 and 6 Bus errors
And finally ended with invalid user "Ubuntu" Then I put in a fresh copy of Karmic and ran it in recovery mode. It didn't recover and from the machine I then tried a live CD and it booted to the black screen and froze And after I tried to do a new install I am getting lines and lines of errors like this............

I ran a disc integrity check which found errors, I was going to just do a re-install, but when it started it froze and that's whats been happening. I don't know what to do at this poit because All I can think about is the data I will lose if I have to slick the drive AGAIN to get this sucker working.

I have installed 11.4, and it seems (seemed) to work OK so far. I installed Thunderbird via the opensuse "1 click install". the installation ran smoothly, but now a click on the Thunderbird icon does not activate any mail client; the only success is that Thunderbird icon jumps joyfully and then disappears.

I switched to Jaunty as I was tired of the constant & multiple bugs that I experienced with 9.10. However, after a few days, Jaunty has already begun acting up as well. The screen is intermittently jumping, flashing & shifting, for lack of a better explanation. It doesn't matter what I am doing, whether using FF, Evolution or checking my preferences, this new issue occurs. The pc is dual booted w/ Windows, which is behaving normally. This is a new one! I have never experienced this w/ Windows or Ubuntu.Any thoughts, other than upgrading to 9.10 ?

I have a problem with my mouse jumping to the top left of the screen (hovering over Applications), this will happen roughly every 5-20secs and makes it impossible to use. This started happening completely out of the blue after several hours of using my desktop today. Before anyone asks: It is not the mouse or hardware related.I have rebooted into fail-safe graphics mode and the problem has disappeared so I guess something related to nvidia driver or compizThere are similar bugs I have found but the solution are not applicable to my system.System: Dell Precision M4300, nVidia Graphics, Ubuntu x64 10.10

I have a dv7-4172us laptop from HP, a new laptop. It has AMD Phenom II N950 -64 bits processors. I am running LiveCD version 10.04 LTS 64 bits in "Try Ubuntu" mode. If I type type fast, the character cursor (not the mouse pointer ) moves away randomly, like a few rows up from present typing location. Sometimes, something else, like another application scrolls it self while I am using Gedit to type this posting. the cursor jumps here and there. Typing on this forum page also produce the same erratic cursor jumping problems!
I also disconnect my optical wireless USB mouse, and still have the same erratic cursor problem. I do not have the ANY problems with Win 7 -64 bits. This is a serious problem. It will render any laptop useless with Linux I so look forward to using Linux.

is there a way to prevent programs from automatically jumping to different workspaces? Example: I have DeVeDe running on Workspace 2 and I switch back to workspace 1....DeVeDe completes its job and then it pops itself into workspace 1 and I have to manually move it back.

I am currently troubled with a very annoying problem - the volume level of the PC is jumping higher and lower at random intervals. It makes listening to music very difficult, as at times the music can go from just right to overly loud, just to fall right down so that it is hard to hear. I've only noticed this problem in the past few weeks, and I can definitely say it wasn't an issue in 9.10. This is a fresh install btw, not an upgrade.
Some details:
Using motherboard sound, Realtek HD Audio, iirc. Below is the output of lshw, with the irrelevant parts cut out.code...

Suddenly, today my mouse seems to have a mind of it's own. For no reason, it's suddenly jumping and scrolling all over the desktop in rapid fashion and apparently left-clicking at will. Reboot does not solve the problem, although it became less after the reboot.
Updates today were:
This is a generic optical mouse that's been used for several years without incident.
So, is there anything that might have caused the problem or is the mouse kaput?
Okay, dug through the drawers and found a Logitech usb optical mouse. Giving that a try as it seems to me that the mouse may be shot.

I have had some issues since installing Fedora 11 on my desktop (well not after I installed it, once I installed the updates). Anyway sound was cutting out, videos were jumping, speeding up with no sound etc online such as ....., when playing local songs and videos etc. Anyway I followed this guide [URL] and that fixed my playing of online videos, music and when I play local music in totem etc. IN fact there is no issues with sound in those.
However; when I try to play a local video in any medial player it jumps sound, crashes, if it starts playing sound it will cut out and if I move the video forward it cuts out and sometimes crashes the video player. Any ideas why that guide fixed all online video and local MP3 but is till messed up playing local videos?

Just installed openSUSE 11.3 (KDE) and not expert about it yet, I am experiencing two problems.
Skype: just installed 2.1.0.81-suse.i586rpm, starting it I get just the icon jumping on the desktop a bit and nothing else.
If I try with the command line, this is the result:
After that, I dont have preview about stored file images and even online, Google Images does not showing preview, just colored strips; if I go with the mouse on it, the image comes out.

I downloaded Firefox and Thunderbird from the mozilla site and unpacked them and added the executables to the main menu. When I start either of them, the respective logo jumps up and down below the cursor for more than 10 seconds after the program has finished loading. Is there an easy fix to this small but annoying issue? I run Squeeze with KDE on a Thinkpad R61.

I have a small issue I couldn't find a solution for. I'm running Centos 5.5 on a Fujitsu-Siemens S6120 laptop. When I boot my system and use the touchpad for the first couple of seconds my mouse cursor jumps around the screen sporadically and also mouse buttons "gets pressed" by themselves (without me actually touching them). After 1-2 seconds the situation becomes absolutely normal - mouse moves good and buttons work only when I press them.
Everything repeats after the reboot.
I see the following error in the system log:
psmouse.c: Mouse at isa0060/serio4/input0 lost synchronization, throwing 1 bytes away
It appears right when I try to use the touchpad for the first time, I guess.
The situation isn't critical, but is quite annoying. Is there a way to get it fixed? I searched the Net, but found mostly issues with mouse loosing sync during operation - such thing never happened to me, as my issue appears only once per boot.

I've upgraded the generic kernel of my Xubuntu Karmic AMD64 persistent USB installation with the ubuntustudio realtime kernel (2.6.31.9.10). The thing is that the generic kernel is still loading as default and I don't have the option on the boot menu to choose the new one. I don't know how to edit this Grub2 version (grub-pc 1.97 beta 4).I haven't found a GUI package for this either.

I'm trying to figure out how to get the newest build for LyX properly (ie not from building it myself) for Karmic. I do
Code:
sudo apt-get upgrade lyx , but it doesn't pick up the 1.6.5 (although it looks like it is prepared to ship out with Lucid. Any ideas on how to get it to just work? It's these minor problems with Ubuntu being slow to upgrade to the newest builds of software (ie Firefox 3.6) that makes it a little bit frustrating. Maybe I should learn to program so I can help out more...

Last night I booted up and got the black screen, and it would not boot. Can't find your /etc/home/fstab file or something along those lines I did not write it down. I got out my thumb drive and reinstalled Ubuntu 9.10, when I got to the partition phase I did a manual install and instructed Ubuntu to load onto /dev/sda1 /. I had previously partitioned this 160Gb drive with 41 Gb for root and 113 for my /home files and left 6.2 for Swap. Now it sees my second partition as 119 /dev/sda2 extended and Unrecognized. Unfortunately all my files are on that partition and I can't figure out how to tell Ubuntu to configure that partition as my /home . I really do not want to re-install and wipe that partition. Can gparted fix this dilemma? I thought I was being so good by creating a boot partition so that I could upgrade in the future without affecting the rest of my files.

I installed Windows 7 onto the unallocated 150GB space on my 250 GB hard drive with no trouble. But, when I restart my computer it goes directly to Windows and pretends that I have no Ubuntu partition at all. I realize that this is because Windows doesn't like GRUB and really hates GRUB2, but I can't seem to fix this. I downloaded the latest release of Easy BCD which gave me a promising screen upon start up where it allows me to select "Ubuntu" instead of "Windows 7" but then it goes to a GRUB command screen. What do I do here?

I've been trying to install karmic from a usb key onto a new zotac ion 300 itx-A board and can't get into the liveCD to test things out. The system boots to the install menu and when I select "Try Ubuntu..." the system hangs on a blinking cursor. This also happens if I choose the "safe graphics" mode.
Selecting "Install Ubuntu" has the same result. I recently used the same usb key to install karmic onto my laptop so I know it works. Searching for "karmic zotac ion" has led me to some posts about xorg not loading but that's after the initial install process and also on an alpha version of Karmic (I'll burn that bridge when i get to it). Others seem to have had no problem getting karmic installed.
I've also tried mythbuntu and 64-bit jaunty with the same results. Is there any way I can find out what's causing this hang? I can't get into a console or anything.

I posted this about 3 weeks ago in the 'Desktop' forum and with no replies feel this may be a better area
I've got Karmic installed on my netbook which I understand uses Grub2 which is still a BETA version.
I still seem to have the original GRUB (legacy) within the file system, still have a menu.lst file but is appears to be showing the contents of grub.cfg at boot time.
What is happening at boot time, is GRUB Legacy handing over to GRUB2 at boot or is the an option for GRUB2 to hand over to Grub Legacy.

Ubuntu rocks but I am having trouble enabling PAE.
I want to do it to have my full 4Gb RAM recognized by my 32bit OS. At the moment System Monitor only recognizes 3.2Gb and the command "free -m" shows the same value.
I followed these instructions but they don't seem to work: [URL]
PS: The point is to really understand how to achieve this and not to start a debate "32bit vs 64bit OS choice"

I have been trying 10.04 Lucid for the past two weeks. Personally I think it has too many gadgets and kinky stuff. Maybe nice to play with, maybe this era just needs that kind of thing but I prefer a reliable, sturdy machine. Look at it as if I had to choose between a Hummer and an old Willy's jeep; I would choose the latter. So this Lucid thing is not really what I need, so I would like to get back to Karmic or even maybe Jaunty. How big was my surprise when I noticed on visiting the official ubuntu download pages that all there is left to download is . . . 10.04 Lucid. Even when you follow the links to what should get you other distro's you come out at ... 10.04 Lucid!!Strange, but this gives me really a "Microsoft" feeling: you shall only use the product that WE have chosen for youFrankly, this leaves me quite disappointed, and IMHO is completely the opposite of the Ubuntu way of life.
But, who am I to complaint. Luckily I still have a perfectly good working 8.04 Hardy and even a Hardy live CD, so this gives me the opportunity to upgrade now that this still is possible. And, maybe, I didn't look in the right places. But given that I am not native English speaking (like most of the world population out there), I sometimes have a lot of trouble understanding some of the more technical data I am encountered with. Being Dutch-speaking, I even went over to the Dutch Ubuntu-site. There I followed the link for downloading Karmic and found myself at ... the official Ubuntu 10.04 download site

How do I install a specific one? Or better yet, revert back to an earlier release.
I have two systems running.
2.6.31-22-generic #60-Ubuntu aphrodite release
2.6.31-22-generic #63-Ubuntu amaterasu release
I googled the #60 and #63 and it listed release names highlighted above, is this correct?
If it is, how can I install the aphrodite release?
I have one system working great (#60), while the other exhibits problems playing back 1080p video files (#63). The only HW difference that could affect the dropping frames is the 8200/8300 Nvidia chipsets (with the 8200 working perfectly) and then of course the Karmic releases. I have re-installed the system and files twice and even upgraded new releases of Nvidia drivers (195 > 256) with no success.
My next step is to try and install the same exact release of Karmic if indeed there is a difference between #60 and #63.
My next step might be to use clonezilla and clone the OS (Root) and try that. But then the chipsets for sound are different as well as the ehternet chipset. But that shouldn't impair the video.

The sound is an onboard Realtek AC97 chip on my motherboard. It worked absolutely fine on my 9.04 Jaunty setup. My machine is dual boot with Windows XP and the sound is fine on XP, so it's not a hardware issue. Karmic seems to think there is no audio device present at all, which is obviously not the case. This is an AMD 64-bit machine running the x64 edition, although I doubt that has anything to with the problem. Everthing else in the installation went perfectly and the GNOME desktop seems significantly quicker too.
