Ubuntu Installation :: Is There Proper Way To Clean Off Older Update Options?
Mar 29, 2011
With the updates received with Ubuntu 10.10 my grub splash screen has become very busy. Is there a proper way to clean off the older update options? My dual boot for Windows 7 has now been pushed off to a second screen.

I can't find any proper power management options on Fedora 15, only really basic simple options under the Advanced tab of the Screensaver.Where can I change the Power Management settings in F15?I'd like to set it so that
- screen powers down on closing the lid only, else never powers down / or after a certain time.
- the machine never powers down, either on AC or on battery.
- screen dims on battery after some time, but no on AC.
- hard drive never powers down.
I previously used Fedora 14 and earlier version on my laptops, and could easily set these power management either through the Screensaver, or directly from another menu. Also, I enabled the "Blank Screen Only" mode in the Screensaver, and disabled the "Lock Screen After", but it still asks for a password after some time. How can I stop that?

I need to prevent that the latest kernel update removes the only kernel that still works in my computer. how can i do this? Currently I have 3 linux kernels versions:
Code:
Ubuntu 10.04 LTS, kernel 2.6.32-23-generic
Ubuntu 10.04 LTS, kernel 2.6.32-23-generic (recovery mode)
Ubuntu 10.04 LTS, kernel 2.6.32-22-generic
[code]...
But only the oldest works. With the new update there is a new kernel version (2.6.32-24) that possibly will not boot (like previous 2.6.32-* kernels) and also I expect that, as in previous updates, the oldest kernel will become inaccessible, thus rendering my ubuntu unbootable.
PS: unsolved threads on the underlaying problem: Can't boot default kernel after upgrading from 9.xx to 10.04 lucid Upgrade to 10.04 freezes on the Ubuntu screen

I have a Dell Laptop C640 Latitude that locks up with in a min or two of booting up after I update from 09.04 to 09.10 or if I do a clean install of 04.10. I do not know if it is the laptop or the 09.10 that is doing it.

I did a clean install of Natty 32 bit on my desktop last Saturday. Now the update manager wants to remove empathy via a partial upgrade. I waited for a day to see if the issue would be resolved, but it isn't. I cannot see the changelog either. On running
Code:
sudo apt-get update
I get the following text.

On two Centos5 servers, yum gives a segmentation fault error when trying 'yum update' or 'yum check-update' after running 'yum clean' :
[Code]....
The error is the same for the other computer except while attempting to update the rpmforge repository. Nothing has really changed on the servers in some time and 'yum update' worked fine on each yesterday and I have no idea why they would both suddenly fail!

So I have the burned ubuntu CD, and I'm attempting to install it on a system that has one HDD with XP/Vista on it, and another that is completely formatted and unpartitioned. However, when I boot to the ubuntu CD, I can use the menus from the bottom, and select the language when initially prompted, but I can't select any of the menu options except for boot from first hard drive.

I'm sorry if this is recurring subject, but I have searched the forum for such a subject and can't find one.I'm using Xubuntu 8.10, I'd like to update my programs to the latest releases, but the available updates in 8.10 versions are not the newest ones. I can't upgrade to a newer version of Ubuntu due to some known issues with older Intel drivers.
Is it possible to have the latest updates of packages while I still using 8.10 version?

I'm working on a custom Ubuntu 10.04 live cd, and I've found updating the Plymouth splash uses up a lot more disk space. The culprit seems to be the command update-initramfs -u, which is needed to apply the new splash image. I'm guessing it's making a new intrd image or something.

Using: Ubuntu Lucid The Update Manager has placed me with an odd dilemma, it says that: "adobeair (version 2.5.1.17730) will be upgraded to version 1:2.0.4.13090-1lucid1"
So 'updating' version 2.5 with version 1.2 I think this has happened because Adobe Air updates itself (asking permission first of course) using it's own dialog box from time to time when I run BBC iPlayer Desktop. What should I do, update or not?

I've been running compiz with no problem for quite a long time, even though my sources.list contained some weird stuff. At that time, running apt-get update would tell me that some of my sources couldn't get accessed to and that older file would be used. I checked it out and I found lots of sources refering to Feisty. here how it looked like:

My laptop is a Medion MD 96970 (bought at Aldi in September 2008) with
- graphic card nVidia GeForce 9300M G
- processor Intel(R) Core(TM)2 Duo CPU T5750 @ 2.00GHz
- 82801H (ICH8 Family) HD Audio Controller
- 3GB RAM and 300 GB memory
1) Originally, my laptop came with Windows Vista. Then I got a SUSE linux 11.0 CD, let it make a partition and installed Suse 11.0. Since Suse11.0 isn't updated any further I would like to change to Suse 11.3 (or whatever is newer). How should I proceed? (I can't find my old Windows Vista CDs and would like to KEEP THE PARTITION, thus formating all isn't an option)
2) In order to make a backup I bought a portable hard drive from iomega (USB 2.0). Then I noticed that it is formated in NTFS. SUSE 11.0 doesn't seem to like it --- what should I do? Can I reformat it somehow?
3) Suse 11.0 doesn't like my sound card. Thus I couldn't Skype or listen to music --- do you know if this problem is solved under Suse 11.3?

I was following this thread: Upgrade kde4.6>
But just before I clicked accept after saying switch system packages to kde4 repo (the one in that thread) I noticed loads of the packages were older than those installed. In the list it has installed (available) and lots of them were all highlighted in red, and the installed version numbers were higher than the available, yet I'm running kde 4.6.0.

I was using Fedora 9 until about 1 month ago when my hard drive crashed. I installed F12 on a new hard drive last week. Due to some other software issues (empathy), I decided I should try to get the latest updates. PackageKit kept giving errors and would not update. So, I researched and found that I needed to run " su -c 'yum update' " for the first update then PackageKit would work. I did this and after about an hour of updating, the screen went black. Nothing you can do at that point but hard reboot.
When I did that, I could only get a "GRUB" command line. I played with it for a minute but really I have no idea what to do with GRUB cmd (beyond my experience level). So I decided to wipe it out and reinstall F12. I did that, and was just working thru the updates again. Same thing happened, went to black screen. I have not rebooted it yet, but Im sure when I do, it will be GRUB again. What in the world am I supposed to do with this? I am not a Linux star, but I have been using it for around 8 years now with various distros, so I would say I have at least moderate experience.

I installed 9.10 on a computer I'm working on, and right away the graphics went out. It won't display the proper resolution without shoving the display significantly to the left.
After MUCH Googling, I found that this can be fixed by a driver called i915. After much MORE Googling, I found [URL], which as you can imagine filled me with relief.
And THEN I try to follow the instructions and discover to my pure horror that GRUB has been gutted and made unusable in 9.10. GRUB2 just simply does not seem to have an option to insert the i915 driver into my boot command.
should I just forget this unstable release and burn a 9.04 disk instead?

First, a little background:
Laptop at issue: Toshiba Qosmio G25-av513
CD/DVD drive: Matshita DVD-RAM uj-845s
I attempted to do a proper install of Ubuntu 11.04 via booting of off CD. This failed because my CD/DVD drive is quirky and does not like burned CDs, though it likes factory pressed CDs just fine. I reattempted using a burned DVD, which almost worked, but my quirky drive just couldn't quite handle it. Replacing this drive is currently not an option, as I have no money for such things at this time.
I updated the CD/DVD drive firmware to 102D (apparently the most recent), but to no avail. I am comfortable with tearing apart electronics, so if anyone has knowledgeable suggestions about any kind of maintenance I could do to the drive I would be happy to hear it. Also, a (cheap!) factory pressed Ubuntu CD could work as well. Are such things available?
I further attempted booting via flash drive, but this failed as well, despite changing BIOS settings. If anyone has any useful suggestions on this, I would be happy to hear them. I attempted installation within Windows XP and was successful, though this is not an optimal solution. I have a second 60GB hard drive in this laptop that I would like to devote to a proper installation of Linux. It seems like I should be able to do this from within the current Ubuntu installation, but I am unsure of how to proceed.

I just installed the latest compiz as per leigh's instructions - nice, easy install!I notice that the snow application is missing. That was my favorite, but where has it gone??
How about floating windows above desktop cube? Dodge? In which upon selecting a window, the non-selected windows move around it to move it to the front.I also notice that many window updates are very poor. For example, in the compiz settings manager when I switch tabs, the window does not actually update unless I move it. I click on a tab and it looks just like the previous tab. If I move the mouse around, it will update the wind in blocks under the mouse, but not the whole window. And, it would appear that the standard compiz is still available from my desktop settings in KDE. Could I have failed to remove the original compiz?

I do a volunteer work for World Computer Exchange, or WCE, a non profit org.WCE get a lot of old-ish (gettins less P3s, and more P4s now) computers, install Ubuntu and ship them to schools, libraries, etc. to the developing countries. When I say Ubuntu, I often intall Xubuntu since the machines are slow, but if it meets the Ubuntu requirement in terms of memory and disk, we often install Ubuntu Ubuntu. And, installing Ubuntu in general takes time. Most people don't notice "it's slow", but if you install it to a 10GB IDE ATA4 disks,it often takes a few hours. I can do it to a handful of machines but there are so many machines to deal with.
I modified the installer to do unattended installation so it is less of hassle now but I'd like to know what I can do to speed up the installation. If it's faster, we'd be able to go though a lot more machines. Also, it would be great if it's an easy process without network. I personally use a network (pxe boot and unattended installation), but there are many volunteers and it's logistically far easier if it can be installed without it.I give out a modified CD to those volunteers and they just put it in and watch the progress of installation. Since machines often have issues with hardware, it's not a simple process even if it's unattended installer.

I've been trying since ever to install the new ubuntu on my FakeRaid controller and I'm really starting to get frustrated. After restarting, i get the message "reboot and select proper device.." So my first tough was that my grub was not installed properly. So i ran the boot_info_script.sh that I found in the forum and here is my output. It says that the boot loader is not installed and my Raid is screwed up. I went look in the BIOS and everything looks fine. Ive put the result.TXT from the script.
