Ubuntu Installation :: After The Initial Option Screen, See Nothing?
Jun 7, 2010
I am trying to install Lucid on my Alienware M17x laptop.I loaded the install to my thumb drive and boot to my thumb drive but after the initial option screen, I see nothing. If I choose to run Ubuntu from the thumb drive, the screen goes blank and after a few seconds I hear the sound, but no Ubuntu on my screen.Am I missing some unspoken prep steps?

my Setup is Fedora 14 x64 + radeon hd 4830 i've downloaded .run package from ati site with latest driver for x64 systems. installed it, but didn't edited grub.conf becouse i didn't understood anything there (probably didn't spent enough time to get things understand) Now i've lost possibility to enter my Fedora system. during boot it lost it's modern blue boot screen (with filling drop), it was replaced by standard old boot screen with triple-color stripe. after this boot screen monitor start blinking going on and off. and on last step i'm getting "Fedora 14 boot bla bla bla something" on screen. nothing works except Ctrl+Alt+Delete. system reboots showing successful daemons shutting sequence. How can i edit grub menu from initial grub screen is it possible to it's own 'e' option or 'c' from grub command line?

I have just upgraded my FC12 installation to FC13. The initial boot failed (just blank screen). Second time I received 'selinux targeted policy relabel is required'. I let that run, but still the boot did not suceed.
I then went in to verbose boot and saw that the boot would hang at libvirtd. So I disabled libvirtd for anything above run level 1. Next boot failed at atd, disabled atd. Next boot failed at 'monthly Smolt checkin'.
At that point and booted in to single user mode and dissabled SELinux, thinking that was the cause of all the problems. That did not help.
The update process has also removed my previous kernels, so I can't test a different kernel

My computer is a Compaq Presario 2110CA. When installing Ubuntu 10.10, after the installation is complete, I select the option to reboot. During the shutdown procedure, the CD drive ejects the installation CD. I/O error messages fill the screen. This isn't what troubles me, since this issue is taken up in other posts and forums. When I press Enter, the laptop reboots as it's supposed to.
Once Ubuntu reboots, it prompts me for login information. After entering my username and password, it plays the startup sound, gives one warning pop-up about the health of my battery, and then the screen stays on the default background only. There are no mini-indicators for wireless connectivity or shutdown/suspend options - just the background. The cursor shows up, too.
I have tried to install gnome-core from the console. I have also tried to make clean, fresh DVD copies of the installation .iso. Each time, because of the CD ejecting during the initial reboot, I arrive at a blank desktop background. What is the best way to properly complete the installation so I can begin enjoying Ubuntu?

I have a standard F15 installation with Gnome 3 from the live CD. I got bored and decided to play with a few other WMs and DEs. I installed KDE-base, but KDE does not appear as an option at login. Is there something else I need to install? XFCE, Openbox, and Classic Gnome with Compiz all appear in the menu. KDE does not.

I am trying to use a F14 network install CD to upgrade on an old HP Pavilion 9695C (Athalon 850MHz, nVidia NV5 RIVA TNT2/TNT2 Pro AGP) with F12 on it. This same disk successfully upgraded a HP Omnibook 6000 with F12. I boot with the network install CD and get the initial menu to select to install/upgrade, install using basic video driver, etc. After selecting either upgrade or basic video driver install, I see the CD being read, then nothing, just a blank screen. I had a similar problem with F12 network install on this machine. So I tried adding "vga=0x318 nomodeset" to the upgrade boot options. The only difference is a quick flash on the screen, then a blinking "underscore character" cursor. The "install using basic video driver" has the same result.
Have also tried:linux nofb
vga=791 [nomodeset]
vga=1 [nomodeset]
xdriver=nv nomodeset
xdriver=vesa nomodeset
However, I always end up with a blank screen or blank screen with blinking underscore cursor. I know this particular AGP has problems with the nouveau driver. On F12 I had to force it to use the nv driver. I submitted a bug but there was no interest on it as this was F12 and F13 was the latest at the time. I did try to upgrade to F13, but ran into this same problem. I was hoping F14 would be better.

I have Lucid running on a Toshiba Portg R500. Last week it started hanging for just over one minute at the initial Toshiba screen. That is, the screen with the Toshiba logo and a series of boot-from options (HDD, CD, Network, USB) along the bottom. I don't know if the machine is even interacting with the OS at this stage. Also, neither Ubuntu nor the machine recognises the CD-ROM tray any longer. As in, I can't boot from CD and I also can't mount a CD when in Ubuntu. I can, however, boot from a USB startup disk (after the one minute delay).
I'm not sure how to collect helpful data on this sort of issue, especially since I can't see any threads that point to similar problems. The only strange thing I did the day this problem started was to forget to unmount a truecrypt-encrypted USB key before shutting the laptop off.
I've reinstalled Lucid but to no avail. I assume that whatever problem I have is a BIOS problem (and so strictly not for here)? As you can imagine though I want to make sure I've accounted for all other possibilities before fooling around with the BIOS.

My laptop recently died and I have invested in a new desktop. The specs are as follows code...
Anyhow, I had been running 10.10 on that laptop. Everything ran swimmingly (until the internal components died of course). I am currently running XP on the desktop and am looking to run 10.10 again as a dual boot. I already partitioned off 200gigs for Ubuntu upon set up of XP. I have tried using the USB LiveCD I used for my first install on the laptop, as well as a LiveCD CD I had created for the laptop. Neither one worked. The LiveCD came up with an error and the USB got to the point where there was the purple screen with white dots and it never got past that point.
I downloaded a brand new 10.10 disc earlier today and I got to the point where the white line blinks on the black screen. Unfortunately that is as far as the boot got. It has some initial writing at the top of the screen saying it was loading a process, and then it produced an error of a int file of some sort. I'll go back and try it again and get a better grasp on the error. Also, after the error message I was given the ability to type commands (it actually told me to type 'help' for a list of the commands available to me), but I had no clue what to do with them.

Got it on a CD and was using it as "Try Ubuntu" instead of installing it for good (I still wanted to see if there were memory issues or HDD issues with my desktop, before I installed it for good).Anyway, I would shut down the pc after about 2 or 3 days and redo the CD install (try ubuntu option) again and add all the plugins etc.Kids used this for playing some games on friv or nickjr.The real issue - of late, when I try to start the PC and boot from the CD, I am getting a LOGIN screen instead of the regular option to install from CD or Try the Ubuntu.

I'm running an Acer 1810Tz, dual boot with win7.Under 9.10 and Grub I had no boot issues, however I have just completed the upgrade to 10.04 and upgraded GRUB to GRUB2.Everything boots just fine into Ubuntu, and my GRUB menu looks right, but when I select the Windows 7 option, the machine just hangs with a black screen, white cursor top left. I'm sure this is a trivial problem, something overwritten that shouldn't have been perhaps, but I have no clue where to start.

when I go to download 11.3 I am presented with the installation medium for a DVD installation with a button that says download DVD. Should there be an option to download an ISO option for a CD installation on this page along with the DVD version? Some of our older machines can only read CD's with a max size of 500+ megs.

I'm trying to install the latest release of Ubuntu from the official site, 10.10.
I downloaded the 64-bit edition first to install. After burning it to a CD, it launches in my PC just fine and lets me go through the install process. I'm letting Ubuntu use up the whole HDD, so no special options are being chosen during the install. At the end of the installation, it asks me to restart and I hit OK, it closes out of the box and leaves me looking at the default background... forever.
Thinking I did something wrong, I tried again, but this time left the box to download updates and install 3-rd party software unchecked. Same thing as above, it appeared to install just fine but hung after I tell it to reboot.
Lastly, I downloaded the 32 bit edition to try, and it gives me the same error.
If I hard restart my machine after waiting on the background image for a while, it will not boot when it comes back up. My PC just remains at a screen after the BIOS acting like it's searching for bootable media.
I'll be honest that I haven't waited for over 15 minutes for it to restart. But should it really take that long?

I downloaded the .ISO for Fedora Core 14 Live, with the intention of installing it to my HDD.
I burn the .ISO with no reported problems.
I boot to the installation CD and can get to the point where it asks me to Login (a timer is also going down for Automated Login).
Once I click "Login", nothing else ever happens.
I can hear the disc spinning in the drive and it's trying to load something, but it never does.
I thought that maybe my older (2003) laptop might just be slow, so I allowed it to do whatever it seemed to be doing overnight while I slept.
Well, I woke up this morning and it was still doing the same exact thing with no results.

Oh, and I intend to dual-boot. I have already made a partition using Norton Partition Magic. It's NTFS filesystem for now, but I figured the Fedora Installation would give me an option to use that partition anyway - NTFS or not (meaning, it would wipe the NTFS file system and use whatever it is that Fedora Core uses). Am I mistaken in assuming this?

I keep having issues at the main password screen. The computer starts, I click my login name, type password, start to hear the music, screen distorted, then reboot. Sometimes I have to do this up to 20 times before it finally logs in.
I am running a Biostar U8668-D Motherboard with 1gb ram. Video is onboard. I am not sure what type. I think it may be S3 Pro Savage.

I'm attempting to install Kubuntu on a new laptop but seem to be having some strange issues. It's a Dell Latitude E5410 with 160GB HDD, 2GB RAM and Intel Core i5-520M(2.4GHz). I'm trying to install Kubuntu 10.10. When I restart the machine and boot from the CD for an initial install it seems to hang for a VERY long time. It will eventually get to the boot options (after hours) but seems sluggish. Once the install gets going everything seems decent except for that I can't seem to get it to finish. I know the CD is good since I used it to get Kubuntu on 2 desktops and another laptop in the last 48 hours. I've also burned another CD just to make sure. The checksum was spot on. Does anyone know what I can do to get this remedied?

After installed to a Dell Dimension E510 machine successfully (I wiped out windows completely), the first update found 315 items to update. After downloaded, ubuntu asked to reboot the machine. Since then, the machine is stucking on the ubuntu startup screen. I suppose it is applying the updates; however, it has been over 12 hours. Is it normal to take that long?

I am trying to install Fedora 11 on my HP Desktop (Intel P4 2.8 GHz) machine with 1.25 GB memory. It has 265 MB nVidia graphics card (6800 series).
When I try to install from boot from the DVD, it prompts to boot (in 10 secs). However after it boots all I get is a blank screen. I suspect this has something to do with the X display initialization with respect to the graphics card I have.
I had faced similar issue with other distros before (Ubuntu) but could manage to boot with some specific boot parameters for specifying x display driver settings at boot (vesa).
I recall Fedora has similar settings like xdisplay=vesa. But unfortunately this doesn't work.

GRUB loading. error: no such disk grub rescue>
I am wondering if there is an issue between two different operating systems upon boot. I am not familiar with GRUB commands.
