Ubuntu Installation :: No Video After Upgrade 10.04 -> 10.10?
Oct 4, 2010
After upgrading to 10.10 i lost my video...I am pretty cretin that it is a video card driver issue. I just need instructions on how to boot to a recovery console and uninstall the proprietary ATi drivers.

since i upgrade my pc to 10.04 lucid i cannot get any audio when i play videos on the web. i can have tried videos, comcast, hulu, etc... the video plays just fine, but no audio. i can go to apple.com and play videos just fine with audio. i can play any other audio just fine (mp3's, cd's, etc...). so i have narrowed it down to possibly a flash player issue. i have tried flashplayer-nonfree, flashplugin, etc... and no luck. here is where it gets weird. i saw a similar post and they tried creating a new account and it worked. so i tried that. i created a test account and all of the videos play just fine without any issue.
does anyone know if there is a way to rebuild or repair an account in ubuntu? i have checked all of the group memberships and they all match the new account that i setup.

I used Update Manager to upgrade an NVIDIA-based machine from version 9-something to 10.04.
Windows now have NO titlebar !
If I screw around with Visual Effects, the title bars come back but only temporarily and system video display is extremely sluggish. CPU usage is very high due to some process named compiz or xcorg. Upgrades always seem to self-destruct, is this fixable?

Each time after boot up from hibernation I see notification that "Ubuntu is running in low-graphics mode". I tried to solve the problem as usual but this time I can not resolve it.I haven't expected this problem on new boot or restart. I suppose that the problem is in incorrect video driver or something else.Could you please share your experience how to resolve my problem? How can I upgrade video driver for GMA 3150 supporting?

When I ran the distribution upgrade from 9.04 in update manager, my screen went blank on reboot and will not recover. Every time I reboot, screen goes blank. I cannot press CTRL-ALT F1 - F6 to gain access to text shells.
I tested booting from the 9.04 live CD and it works fine. So I downloaded the 9.10 live cd on another computer and booted it on the disabled system. Same exact problem on the live CD that I had upon installation: on boot screen goes black and cannot access text shells.
What can I do next to get out of this short of going back to 9.04, which has problems that I do not want to live with?

Ran preupgrade for F11 to F12. Everything ok there it seemed. Upon reboot, it started booting the kernel, then the video disappeared, no signal to monitor. After about 15min, I just rebooted and managed to get make to Fedora 11.
Considering just going with DVD upgrade. I googled preupgrade no video and here as well, and several unrelated things seemed to come up.

I keep getting the following msg as I try to upgrade from 10.04 -> 10.10 ... "Could not calculate the upgrade An unresolvable problem occurred while calculating the upgrade: E:Error, pkgProblemResolver::Resolve generated breaks, this may be caused by held packages. This can be caused by:
* Upgrading to a pre-release version of Ubuntu
* Running the current pre-release version of Ubuntu
* Unofficial software packages not provided by Ubuntu
If none of this applies, then please report this bug against the 'update-manager' package and include the files in /var/log/dist-upgrade/ in the bug report." I don't think any of the issues above apply - can anyone offer advice on how to get around or "force " the upgrade

I inadvertently upgraded from Ubuntu 10.10 to 11.04 earlier tonight and once the upgrade was complete and I restarted the system, I now get no video. I'm able to get to prompt with Ctrl-Alt-F1, but I'm not really sure what to do to fix this at that point.
The video on the system is an NVIDIA 6150SE. I know before this upgrade I was running the NVIDIA driver that was recommended once the initial install of 10.10 had completed.

I have recently upgrade to Ubuntu 10.10. After restart for very short time I can play videos with 'vlc'... but short video disappears. There is only audio. BTW, video in flash from browser is working. Any other video play fails. Totem displays this:
Quote:
The program 'totem' received an X Window System error. This probably reflects a bug in the program. The error was 'BadValue (integer parameter out of range for operation)'. (Details: serial 132 error_code 2 request_code 133 minor_code 19) (Note to programmers: normally, X errors are reported asynchronously; that is, you will receive the error a while after causing it. To debug your program, run it with the --sync command line option to change this behavior. You can then get a meaningful backtrace from your debugger if you break on the gdk_x_error() function.) Should I reinstall Ubuntu? (I did not have this issue in Ubuntu 10.04LTS)

I just upgraded from Karmic to Lucid. I've never had problems with playing video files before, but now that I've upgraded to Lucid, I am, regardless of Compiz and other visual effects being on. What I know of my hardware specs are in my sig. I have "NVIDIA accelerated graphics driver (version current) [Recommended]" activated (and in fact, one of my reasons for upgrading was the supposedly improved NVIDIA drivers in Lucid). VLC, MPlayer and Totem are all choppy playing .avi's: they play smoothly for several seconds, then start skipping (audio and visual, separately), though VLC does so less violently than the others. Similar problems, though slightly less severe, with watching flash movies in chromium.

My drivers are not working right, I removed the ati drivers from synaptic to stop a stuttering screen problem I had, worked fine...rebooted reinstalled them rebooted and the problem came back after I reinstalled them. So now I've removed them again but I have not removed the Fire GL driver, on 10.04 I had stuttering screen and let the system find the driver then everything was fine.
Can I do that again, will 10.10 have the Fire GL driver if I let the system find it again?

I'm running 32-bit Ubuntu 10.10 on a Macbook 3,1 and using my computer's built in iSight. Up until recently, before making the switch to Skype Beta 2.2, I was having no problems using Skype's video chat feature. However, now I am only able to get video working if I open a terminal window and type in:
"LD_PRELOAD=/usr/lib/libv4l/v4l1compat.so skype"
Does anyone know of a way to get Skype functioning normally again? The launchers from my menu/panel no longer load the Skype that can use video, and when I tried to change the launch command to what what I use in terminal, it keeps telling me that "there was an error creating the child process for this terminal."

This morning, I ran yum update and discovered it was an upgrade from 5.3 to 5.4. Nice, but.... The upgrade went well, no errors, did a reboot to reset everything and now no video output. Good thing I did full system disk backup prior to the upgrade. I am wondering if anyone else has this problem?
I will attempt to boot from a CD/DVD but just thought I would check here first.

So I've got this old Apple with an nVidia chipset. Don't know much about Apples, but from random searches on google I think it's an imac g5.
Anyway when I install Kubuntu 10.04 it works until I update it, then the video dies. It looks as though the nouveau driver is being killed and nv put back in it's place, anyone have any remedies I might try?

after upgrading to 10.10 I ran into one problem. Upgraded some while ago (when released), then noticed problem but now it starts to really bother me. Unfortunately didn't find any solution yet. I'm 100% sure I didn't have such problem during upgrades starting from Karmic till Lucid.
The problem is with any version of wine (it's not wine issue, i think) and MetaTrader4 on it. Not typical VNC issue The problem is that it works almost normally, but don't show some lines on screen. Take a look at screenshot attached. I found in wine proposal to disable xrender: [URL]... it really helps with that issue, but then I ran in typical AplhaBlend problem and no visible icons in toolbars. So I have to choose to see normal icons in toolbars (see 2nd screenshot) or to see correct chart

but I had trouble trying to play an avi file on the bigscreen via my laptop's HDMI output.Although I could play the video in a full size box (with status bars and borders visible), both screens would go black when I double-clicked to go full size. This happened in both MPlayer and VLC as long as the HDMI cable was connected. Audio was fine.It presents as some sort off copyright protection, but I remember being able to watch movies fine in Maverick. Is anyone else having this problem with Natty?

While upgrading to a newer version of Ubuntu I noticed a warning saying that the installation/upgrade should not be interupted. Unfortunately though, during this process my computer froze up and I had to shut it down. Ubuntu no longer starts on my computer. I still have Windows though, which is what I'm using now.

I'm running 10.04 and for several days now I get two packages that are grayed out and do not upgrade in upgrade-manager.
If I use the shell and apt-get I get the following message: The following packages have been kept back: firefox-gnome-support update-manager
The system is functioning well, but these 2 packages just linger as I process probably hundreds of lucid upgraded packages.

I'm running Ubuntu 10.10 and 2.6.35-27-generic. When I run the Upgrade Manager, the 'Distribution Upgrade' window pops up and in bold letters reads 'Running partial upgrade'.
The next line reads '>Preparing to upgrade' and sits there. Mean while, the process begins to perform a great deal of constant hard drive activity. The window's horizontal activity bar reads 'Calculating the changes' at the bottom of the 'Distribution Upgrade' window.
