Ubuntu Installation :: GRUB Is No Longer In Existence On This System ?

I have two internal 500GB hard drives in my system. On the first, I had 9.04 installed, and used the second as storage. Well, I decided to try out 9.10, so I installed it on the second hard drive. Basically I was running 9.04 and 9.10 side-by-side. I just wanted to make sure I liked 9.10, before fully upgrading. Once I decided to move over to 9.10, I just copied all my files and the like from the first drive to the second. Once done with that, I re-formatted the first hard drive to become storage once again. I got 9.10 set-up the way I like it, got my Firefox bookmarks and settings put together, installed all the various apps, etc. Updates came in, I installed them and restarted. But what's this? GRUB is no longer in existence on this system!
I'm assuming that installing 9.10 beside 9.04 allowed for them to use GRUB off the first drive? And in re-formatting it, I got rid of GRUB? That's the only scenario that makes sense. I can boot off LiveCD fine, I just can't get 9.10 to boot, mainly because there is no GRUB.
So, is there any way to install GRUB through a LiveCD, or some other method? I suppose I could just wipe everything, and install a fresh copy of 9.10 again, but I'd like to avoid that.
Preliminary checks of sound level settings and obvious dumb stuff but there is still no sound. The problem seems to be that the system does not recognize the existence of the sound card and insists on using alternative audio devices.
I recently installed Ubuntu (Karmic Koala) on a Dell Inspiron 1525 which already had Vista installed on it. The installation went just fine and I could boot into either Ubuntu or Vista using the Grub bootloader options. After updating grub through the update manager however, I can no longer boot into Vista and get an error message that says: "Windows cannot start. A recent upgrade or hardware change may have caused this".

Partition table entries are not in disk order. I have the Vista recovery disk but was wondering whether using it to repair the Vista bootloader might mess up Grub.
After upgrading from 9.10 to 10.04 my System no longer boots. I had a Dual-Boot System. On Boot I get - "error : the symbol 'grub_puts_' not found grub rescue> (prompt): If I run 'insmode /boot/grub/normal.mod' (I get the same error) If I run 'insmode /boot/grub/ext2.mod' (I get 'The symbol 'grub_xasprinf' not found) If I run ls /boot (The Kernel File Names look Ok)

This may be caused by the Kernel failing to detect your hard disk drive or failing to read the partition table, or the disk may be unpartitioned. I upgraded my system from 8.04 to 10.04.Now I keep getting errors saying that my adobe nonfree installation is bad. The worst part is that when I try to uninstall the Adobe package to start from scratch, it says that the problem is so bad that it can't be uninstalled, but must be re-installed.Of course when I try to re-install it, I get errors saying it's corrupt.I'm caught in a chicken and egg situation here.
Also, sound no longer works on my system.I think this is most likely a symptom of the first problem, but I'll just put it out there.I've read the other threads explaining how to fix this, but nothing works.
I have a problem with the openoffice 3.1, install it and I worked fine in Fedora 14, but I restart the system and no longer works. nothing happens with any file.

I am trying to restore my system to Ubuntu 10.10, using a system backup made with REMASTERSYS. When I reboot, I get the message: GRUB error:15 I found many threads discussing this issue, most notably here: [URL]
I have a cron job running to act upon files if they exist in a folder... the problem is the nature of those new files. New files aren't put there very often, the server isn't used much (most of the time) so I would like to not check every minute to see if a new file is there and allow the disks to spin down and go to sleep. However, when a new file does exist there, it needs to be acted upon ASAP.
So currently I'm handling that with a cron job... it works... but what would work much better is the ability to act upon the event of a new file being present. Is there a way to trigger action upon new file system activity in a certain path? or just keep doing what I'm doing and have the system check all the time and keep the disks awake just in case something shows up?
I am very much new to the world of Linux, and I just wanted to try out the popular Ubuntu flavor alongside my existing Windows 7 installation. Things worked well at first and I seemed to have the dual boot setup working, until I was notified that there were updates available and advised to install them. I did so, but somewhere along the way something went terribly wrong. When it asked me to restart, and I did, nothing happened. I was not offered the choice of OS, and the screen simply sat there, blank.
I installing Fedora 12. I did ALL the same as in the installation guide, GRUB installed into MBR. And after installation and rebooting - nothing happens, after BIOS messages there is nothing - computer hangs. GRUB seems to be not installedI have 2 hard disks. At first I tried to install on the 2-nd drive(it is slave). Afterward I detach one disk and try with only one hard disk(it is master). Nothing changes - computer hangs.
I had been dual-booting Ubuntu and Windows 7. Today I upgraded to Ubuntu 10.04 and now Grub still has a Windows 7 boot option, but when selected it goes to a blank screen and does not boot Windows 7 as it would before.
Can anyone inform me about the existance of an emailprogram exclusively for linux? I mean a client which has no windowsversion? A client that makes importing very difficult?
My desktop gets little use now but I had to do a clean install and found that grub no longer discovers a DOS partition. Even after install,a grub-update also no longer finds the DOS partition. Can anyone explain, or has this been dropped from grub. I do need that partition, rarely, I admit but still, it is needed.
I'm running Kubuntu natty on grub-efi-amd64. I've just received notification of a bunch of new packages to install, I believe part of it is a kernel update. When I click on "apply" a window comes up which says "Additional changes are required to complete the task". "2 packages to remove" lists "grub-efi" and "grub-efi-amd64". It lists 5 packages to install 3 of which are linux kernel and 2 of which are the bios version of grub.
How can I update my system without having efi-grub removed?
I made a mistake installing the most recent distro of Ubuntu. When choosing where to install the loader, I selected "Windows 7 (loader)" instead of the proper default option. Now when I select Windows 7 in GRUB, it just brings me right back to GRUB.
However, my Windows installation and all the files are still present on the disk. The recovery disk doesn't recognize the Windows installation, but all the files are clearly present. I was even able to recover my most important files onto a USB drive using the file browser in the recovery disk.How can I correct this mistake? I need to be able to boot into Windows 7 again.
I had installed ubuntu, then windows xp, surprise surprise I lost the boot loader for ubuntu. I have 2 different live boot cd's one for 9.10 and another for 10.04. My PC would be running 10.04, if I could install grub. When I go to help on the live boot disk menu, it tells me that rescuing a broken system is not enabled on either disk, though I downloaded a full copy of the disk when I downloaded it. What can I do to get grub back onto my computer? I deleted the XP partition hoping that would help. It didn't now the pc will only boot when I have the live boot cd.
I have 6 hard drives that have 9.10 and 10.04 on them. Not as a dual boot, but some hard drives have different versions on them. When I have plugged the drives in a couple of weeks later, the grub is gone and system will not boot. I get like a grub 1.5 error and that is all the options I have. Does anyone one know why this happens? Nothing on the drives but the O/S to get rid of windows. All drives worked perfect until they were removed and installed later.
i installed ubuntu 10.04.. all very nice, but not the os for me.. lightscribe problems, front ir panel problems. minor niggles for sure, but enough for me to go ahead with formatting and installing windows. simple job...or so i thought... using windows set up, i formatted c: and continued with install...on first restart i got a grub error saying unknown file system... i have tried loads of different things... fix mbr fixboot, that nt60 one. dban wouldnt work either.. im at my wits end ive spunked the best part of 1000 on this system and my wife is nagging me.
I heard (although I can't find any sources for proof) that the USER environment variable may not be set in a old Unix shells (maybe even some obscure shells as well). What is the probability that it won't be set?
I have a dual boot windows XP/ubuntu 9.10 set up on one hard drive. Everything was working fine. The 9.10 install had been updated from 9.04. I recently had problems with the XP partition (XP basically collapsed) so I re-installed XP on the same partition it was on before. I then attempted to reinstall Ubuntu ( I decided I wanted a new 'clean' installation of Ubuntu as well). When I got to the partition function it refused to recognize that there is a Windows partition, or a previous ubuntu partition, but states 'No operating system installed' or similar, and offers the entire hard drive for installation. When I look at the partitions using Windows partition software the Windows and the ubuntu partitions are clearly in evidence. I have also tried to reinstall GRUB but it doesn't appear to exist.
I am running ubuntu 10.4, windows 7, and I had ubuntu 10.10 on a single hard drive. I upgrade the 10.10 system to 11.4 and now my grub menu which is on the 10.4 system shows two windows and two 11.4 installations.
How can I clean this up? Also I have tried to start with the grub 1.99 on the 11.4 system and all I get is a black screen at startup. I am happy with grub on 10.4 except for the extra lines.
The problem after couple installations (10.10 --> 10.04 --> 10.10 --> 10.04-3) is that system goes to "busybox" after complaining about missing root device. I already have come to conclusion that this problem could be solved by telling the system that the root device is at sda1. However, I'm not able to start grub (by pressing "ESC") at boot before problems start. I'm able to start live-cd and I tried to install "over" the old one (same partitions without format, same username). No luck.
And in the busybox /proc/modules is empty for example. And the grub has worked with previous installations.
I've run into a strange problem recently. My primary OS right now is Windows 7, and OpenSUSE is secondary. I had GRUB as the bootloader, and everything seemed fine, but I ran into one problem in Windows 7: one program refused to work correctly with ATI forced anti-aliasing on, but it is needed by others (or else edges look jagged).So I decided to install ATI Tray Tools. But it seems that Windows 7 is being evil and won't let install drivers that their creators didn't pay Microsoft for (thank goodness that's not the case in Linux). That means I had to use a driver overrider program, and that means that it had to change the Windows 7 BCD options. And that's where bootloaders kick in. It seems that Windows 7 is too lazy to check for its BCD on other than active partitions, so it doesn't allow the overrider to function.
So what I did was change GRUB to boot Windows 7 with makeactive flag. The problem now is - it won't deactivate! I no longer get GRUB's boot screen, it just boots to BCD directly. So my question is - is there a way to deactivate (or, rather, reactivate the /boot partition) after Windows 7 shuts down or restarts automatically? Obviously I don't want to use GPartEd each time I want to boot to Linux.
I am appealing to the minds far greater than mine.. I have been using this forum with resounding success without having to post for some time, and I am more than impressed with what you can resolve by simply trawling through the archives, on this occasion however, I'm stumped.
I have a desktop upstairs in my home running 10.10, I have a Ralink Wirless LAN dongle RTL8188CUS with a mini CD with all the drivers etc. Now, when I physically install the dongle Ubuntu does not firstly even acknowledge it's existence, so, I unpack the CD Lynx dir and there seems to be no way to install it? I can't see a code to run in terminal to install.. nothing?
My computer's recent history in chronological order:
1. debian jessie is installed using netinstall iso to sda. 2. windows 8.1 is installed to sdc.

Result: My computer boots directly to Windows 8.1. If I press F7 during first seconds of boot and choose "debian" as the boot device (via blue bios screen, not grub), debian boots.
My purpose:
1. To use debian grub screen to choose between debian and Windows. (To avoid pressing F7 during boot to use debian) 2. Set debian as default OS in grub and boot to debian unless I choose otherwise in for example 10 seconds.
I guess that I should update grub to fix this but I don't want to take risk.
I have a problem for which I imagined a radical solution. Okay, I have a script that uses Alltray's "menu" feature as an interface. It's working greatly, EXCEPT sometimes lxpanel (the panel and tray of LXDE) has a hiccup and restarts, at which point the alltray menu is still running, but the icon is gone from the tray.
I want to somehow test the screen for the existence of a color, a color that is likely only to exist in the icon I've chosen for the chat menu. If the color exists on my screen, then the script can continue to do nothing, but if the color doesn't exist, then that means the alltray icon with my custom icon has disappeared, at which point I should have my bash script close the alltray process and start it again.
How to accomplish the checking of my screen for the existence of a particular color? To simplify, I already have simple screenshot scripts (scrot is good for it), so it would be fine if I could simply analyze an image.
I am fresh to Ubuntu and am having trouble getting it to boot on my system. I normally run XP, but recently added a second internal hard drive and installed Ubuntu on it. The installation went fine and upon initial reboot I received -
GRUB loading. error: no such disk grub rescue>
I am wondering if there is an issue between two different operating systems upon boot. I am not familiar with GRUB commands.
