After upgrading to Maverick I found that lsusb command would hang or omit any device I plugged in (flash drive or portable hard disk)
So I did
dpkg -i /var/cache/apt/archives/*usb*
and
dpkg -i /var/cache/apt/archives/*udev*
using packages from a lucid install I had on another laptop which didn't have the USB problem.Now everything is fine. Maverick has some problem with USB.
When booting from the netbook USB, there are two wireless connection stages:
the first appears at the "TRY/INSTALL" selection screen, and after supplying the keyring password, the connection appears to succeed.
the second appears on the desktop, after selecting "TRY"; the keyring dialogue appears & seems to work, but then the network login dialogue pops up, and refuses to connect.
Both my Acer machines connect to the same AP under Maverick and the EEE PC works in Lucid.
I used this laptop since 8.4. When first 10.10 beta arrived I decided to upgrade as usual. all seemed to go well. At reboot the computer was hanging after grub, with a blinking cursor on top left. Then was turning off and had getting into a weird hung mode. Was not possible to start it over. The only solution was unplug, take battery off and wait for a minute. Now with the official 10.10 I decided to install it over. But the live CD start right after the first screen. Again with the blinking cursor and angs the machine again. Windows works perfectly as well as all Ubuntu, including 10.4

But 10.04 crashes in laptop ASUS X50GL with processor Intel Core 2 Duo T5800.In fresh installation, it hangs always, in ANY 10.04 version, beta or stable, 32 or 64 bit, also from iso image in CD or in usb stick,I have tried all possibilities!Therefore, clever enough, I though let's do it in an indirect way: let's install the 8.04 distro (it works) and later on I will upgrade to 10.04. So I just did.Everything was fine (also the upgrade, without a single warning) until final reboot after upgrade to 10.04.hanged at boot!. There is incompatibility between 10.04 and this firmware, clearly. Unfortunately, 10.04 is not yet stable, I guess.I took a picture of the screen which I attach.
View 4 Replies View RelatedMy sister has this old laptop, it's a Sahara NB610-LE1D, that she wants to use as a karaoke/music machine. Being an avid Ubuntu user for about 2 years now, I recommended an Ubuntu installation with Rhythmbox. Fantastic, she said - you install it and show me how to use it.
I downloaded an iso of version 10.10, burned it and tried to boot up the laptop with it (there is a beta version of Windows 7 on it at the moment that's expired, it's really not usable.)
It gets past the boot-up sound, and the new maverick wallpaper loads, and then it just sits there, with the mouse pointer changing between the pointer and the little circle busy ball. I've left it for a few hours yesterday and nothing else happened. I've done a memory test, and a disk test, both of which are fine.I'm about to throw this machine out of the window.
If I would like to update my kernel to linux 2.6.34 on my asus eee 1001px laptop. How can I do that in the easiest way? I already downloaded the kernel from kernel.org.
View 7 Replies View RelatedIt seems with the newer linux headers, two functions changed their names slightly and caused a crash when attempting to build the Asus-provided USB-N13 drivers.
I'm still in the middle of getting the device to work, but actually compiling the driver was a major problem for me and others I've seen that complained of the breakage in 10.10.
Here's the fix:
Within the include/os/rt_linux.h and os/linux/rt_usb_util.c files, the usb_buffer_alloc and usb_buffer_free functions are part of an internal macro. These functions do not exist anymore and are replaced by the usb_alloc_coherent and usb_free_coherent respectively. Input parameters did not change, just the names.
The macro is defined in rt_linux.h and the functions are used in a symbol export within rt_usb_util.c. Simply renaming the functions should allow it to build.
As I said, I'm still in the process of getting the wireless to work, just wanted to let everyone know of the quick fix.
This issue will probably be addressed with a macro fix somewhere eventually.

Mentioned post - [URL]... I was/am also having the same problem that was described above and fixed it with either 'nomodeset' or 'i915.modeset=0', however, once I installed Gnome (part of the "Ultimate Server Guide"), I had one of the following happen...
-On Maverick, it would continue to boot in the console and running commands like startx would result in an error (no screen) -On Lucid, it stopped booting into the server all together (even with the above fixes). Once it boots into the server (about 6-7 seconds later), I'll see a bunch of reddish square artifacts on the screen and the HD activity will stop and the screen will remain on, but nothing will be displayed.
I've searched high and low for help on this and nothing seems to fix the problem. I consider myself very technical but my linux experience is only fair/good. Mostly from Unix experience in college and messing around with Ubuntu Desktop on my netbook.

View 9 Replies View RelatedI have an Asus UL80vt laptop. This laptop has an integrated (Intel) as well as a discrete (Nvidia 210m) graphics card.
I want to use the nvidia proprietary drivers because from what I understand, it's the easiest way to set up dual monitors (I have an external monitor). I installed the latest nvidia driver: NVIDIA-Linux-x86-190.53. When I try to run the NVidia X Server Settings GUI, it tells me that "You do not appear to be using the NVIDIA X driver. Please edit your X configuration file (just run `nvidia-xconfig` as root), and restart the X server. "
I checked out my xorg.conf and changed the device driver to 'nvidia' instead of 'nv'. Curiously, when I run nvidia-xconfig, it changes the intel device to 'nvidia' which is a problem. So i skipped running that and just stuck with my xorg.conf. When I run startx, I get a message saying "failed to initialize the NVIDIA graphics device PCI:1:0:0".
I've combed through multiple forums which state different kinds of solutions and I've tried different kernel options such as 'vmalloc=512m' or 'noapic' to no avail.

There are currently two options for nVidia drivers in Lucid Lynx, 173, and current. With the video card in my laptop, 9650m GT, the 173 drivers work but Docky is painfully, unusably slow. With the "current" drivers, Docky is fine but I get progressively worse and worse static-type lines across my screen and eventually it the machine restarts itself. I've tried installing drivers manually but they won't compile against the kernel.
Before installing Lucid, I had 9.04 Jaunty installed, and Docky (at the time still merged with gnome-do) worked without a hitch. I ran into this error first when I installed 9.10 and decided to go back to 9.04, hoping that it would be fixed. I can't remember which version of the nVidia drivers I was using in Jaunty, but is there any way to go back to those drivers in Lucid?
I have a 6 month old Acer (sorry not Asus as per the heading) Aspire laptop. I downloaded Ubuntu and cannot connect via wireless. It works fine via ethernet. Having spent several hour reading this forum, other web pages and the help file, I actually still have not got a clue either as to what the actual problem is or how to begin solving it. Is there a simple answer? If not, I'll go back to windows 7 as Ubuntu seems anything but the promises made.

View 12 Replies View RelatedIt looks like something must've slipped the attention of Ubuntu developers as in the previous LTS version laptop suspension after closing the lid worked perfectly fine for me (Dell Latitude D820) while after upgrading to Meerkat it doesn't work any more....well sometimes it does sometimes it doesn't - it behaves sort of like a weather in UK/Ireland ...anyway...is there more information I could provide to you guys or is there something you could give me to point me to the right direction ?

I deleted network manager when trying to set up a static I.P follow the guid on this page www.liberiangeek.net/2010/09/setup-permanent-static-ip-add I've googled around. The methods suggested to solve it have not been useful in my case. I tried to the method by a user on this forum

first of i'm a total noob at Linux / Ubuntu but i still want to learn more about it and stop being a windfag .Anyhow. i first of installed Ubuntu 9.10 and then updated to Ubuntu 10.(04?). and everything was running smooth and good. but when i started my com the next day i got some broken files that was broken. I thought "Okey.. I'll just go to the "Broken Fixer" and get it over with" and i went in to the broken fixer and like marked all and everything stared to update. i went of and got me some coffee and got back to my comp and got this error.

As the title says, i was in the middle of the upgrade, when the system froze then a black screen with the text similar to: starting apache ..... starting ..... ... in that way, but with more text, i could not remember the exact details. When i boot up, it say /dev not found, and other errors, and a weird black screen that seems to be loading modules appears, but never finishes and starts to act strange. Any way i can get this fixed without just copying my data and reimaging my partition.
