Ubuntu Installation :: Maverick Live CD On Sahara Laptop?
Dec 24, 2010
My sister has this old laptop, it's a Sahara NB610-LE1D, that she wants to use as a karaoke/music machine. Being an avid Ubuntu user for about 2 years now, I recommended an Ubuntu installation with Rhythmbox. Fantastic, she said - you install it and show me how to use it.
I downloaded an iso of version 10.10, burned it and tried to boot up the laptop with it (there is a beta version of Windows 7 on it at the moment that's expired, it's really not usable.)
It gets past the boot-up sound, and the new maverick wallpaper loads, and then it just sits there, with the mouse pointer changing between the pointer and the little circle busy ball. I've left it for a few hours yesterday and nothing else happened. I've done a memory test, and a disk test, both of which are fine.I'm about to throw this machine out of the window.

My live disk cannot get an internet connection. I am using a self-burned Meerkat live CD, and it will not enable networking. Is there some kind of code fu to get this going? I have tried right clicking and selecting "Enable Networking," but it won't take. It still insists the networking is disabled. The reason I need the connection is because I have to install. I have a Netgear wireless router with a network, and a wired LAN to connect to.

After upgrading to Maverick I found that lsusb command would hang or omit any device I plugged in (flash drive or portable hard disk)
So I did
dpkg -i /var/cache/apt/archives/*usb*
and
dpkg -i /var/cache/apt/archives/*udev*
using packages from a lucid install I had on another laptop which didn't have the USB problem. Now everything is fine. Maverick has some problem with USB.

I'm install it onto my laptop (its about 4 years old - a Sony Vaio VGN FS315E).
I have been given a live disk of the latest edition of ubuntu (10.4?) by someone at work, but my CD drive on my laptop seems to think the disk is blank. I know this is not the case as when the disk is inserted into a different laptop is it recognised as an ubuntu installation disk.
My aim to boot ubuntu from the disk to get a feel for what it's like before installing it fully on my laptop, and also to check that it would work on said laptop.

Fed up with Windows and ready to become a Linux convert. Here's the only problem:
I've created no less than four separate Live USB distros - all using different USB sticks -
yet my HP Pavilion dv7 refuses to recognize any of them as "bootable devices."
1) Have formatted USB sticks in FAT16 & FAT32 - neither made a difference.
2) Have created bootable USB sticks using Ubuntu Minimal Live install; Ubuntu full Live install; PuppyLinux Live install; even a simple gparted live install - none will boot.
3) Have checked & re-checked that BIOS is set to boot first from USB drive device.
4) 2 of the 4 USB sticks are new, fresh out of the packaging; and 3 of the 4 USB sticks are each from different manufacturers - so I'm fairly certain it's not a issue of a particular brand being incompatible, nor is it due to the sticks being corrupted somehow.
5) Each of the 4 live distros appears to have downloaded just fine - all necessary files appear to be in order.
6) Have tried using Unetbootin, Ubuntu's own live usb tool, and 1 or 2 others - all have failed to boot my HP laptop.
7) Have even tried removing all non-essential hardware before booting - even booting with no hard drives installed - system still returns the error "no bootable device detected."
This laptop is only 2 years old; I know it should be able to boot from USB. I can boot from a (rather old) SliTaz distro on CD just fine - but I need a persistent USB stick so I can easily add packages as needed, etc...s.

I have been successfully using Elluminate Live online meeting space (Java-based) on previous releases of Ubuntu.By upgrading to Maverick 10.10., all audio features of that application became dysfunctional. Obviously, the Java application that is used to connect to Elluminate Live doesn't recognize audio devices (audio setup wizard of the same application doesn't list any devices).Contacting Elluminate's support didn't help because accoring to them Ubuntu 10.10 is not a supported distro for Elluminate.

It looks like something must've slipped the attention of Ubuntu developers as in the previous LTS version laptop suspension after closing the lid worked perfectly fine for me (Dell Latitude D820) while after upgrading to Meerkat it doesn't work any more....well sometimes it does sometimes it doesn't - it behaves sort of like a weather in UK/Ireland ...anyway...is there more information I could provide to you guys or is there something you could give me to point me to the right direction ?

I deleted network manager when trying to set up a static I.P follow the guid on this page www.liberiangeek.net/2010/09/setup-permanent-static-ip-add I've googled around. The methods suggested to solve it have not been useful in my case. I tried to the method by a user on this forum

sudo ifconfig eth0 up

If you have wireless it's a little more complicated, but if you have an unsecured network (no WEP or WPA) and your wireless interface name is say eth1, and your wifi network essid (name) is "mynetwork" it wo
uld be something like this:
sudo ifconfig eth1 down
sudo iwconfig eth1 mode managed essid "mynetwork"

That is what I do to connect to Xbox Live and I just got an Insignia Blu-ray player that can only connect to BD-Live through an Ethernet connection, so I was wondering if I could apply that same concept to my Blu-ray player.

I have an older compaq laptop (P4). I just wanted to be able to boot a live cd. The trouble is the only live cd I can get to boot is SUSE 9.2 and it ends up having a scripting error. It is an old disk so it is probably shot.
I have tried to get fedora 14 to boot, but it will not. A newer computer I have will boot from the FC14.
why I cannot get the live CD's to boot?

A few weeks ago I installed Fedora Linux 64-bit on my HP dv4-1428ca laptop which was running Windows 7. At that time I created a Live USB using the fedora-live usb tool and it booted fine. A couple days ago I decided to try out openSUSE, so I downloaded the 64-bit live-cd image and tried to create a live usb using the SUSEStudio ImageWrite provided in the documentation. The tool kept giving me an error message, so I decided to try unetbootin instead. However, when I tried to boot the live usb on my HP laptop, it presented me with the message.
"SYSLINUX 4.04 EDD 2011-04-18 COPYRIGHT (C) 1994-2011 H. PETER ANVIN ET AL" with a blinking cursor and nothing else. I've tried a variety of alternative programs for creating live USB's (pendrivelinux, linux live usb creator, unebootin), and verified the checksum of the iso file for openSUSE 11.4 64-bit, and still was not able to get past the "SYSLINUX..." message on my HP laptop. However, the live USB does boot on the other computers in my house. Interestingly, if I create a live USB using the tool provided by Fedora, it will boot fine. However the Fedora Live USB tool cannot be used for other distros.
Specs:
AMD Turion X2 Dual Core
4GB Ram
ATI Radeon 3200 Graphics
320 GB Hard Drive

I want to watch some live streaming TV channels on my laptop which has slackware installed.
For instance, I try this page: >click<
But I get this error:
The Totem Plugin could not be started. Failed to create a GStreamer play object. Please check your GStreamer installation.
Slackware is fully updated.
EDIT: I have also installed the latest version of GStreamer from source, and 3 plugins.

I've done a good few ubuntu installations for friends and colleagues and now my Dad wants in on the action. His PC is more than capable of running ubuntu 32 bit BUT I've hit a brick wall I've never come across before. I've burnt a CD image of the 10.04 iso from [URL] on my ubuntu box and for some reason, his PC just won't boot from it. If I select the option to manually select the boot source, all I see is the hardware monitor telling me things like CPU temperature. As for the Live USB - nothing whatsoever. Is it possible that I've managed to corrupt the iso file somehow?

Live CD: I dowloaded the ISO, burned it to CD, booted from this CD. It starts to load and I can see the purple background with the loading icons. Everything seems normal. But instead of ending up with the login screen, it ends up with a screen that says 'Please remove all bootup media and hit ENTER' or something like this. So I hit enter and then it shuts off my computer. That's it.
Live Stick: So I tried another option and created a stick with 'usb-creator.exe' that is on the CD. Then I start from that stick, but all I end up is a line of 'Syslinux bla bla copyright 20xx-2011'. That's it. Then it does nothing anymore. The cursor is blinking, but no prompt or whatsoever and keyboard input doesn't do anything.
Now something weird: When I insert Live CD and Live Stick at the same time and then boot my computer, then it boots into Ubuntu. Obviously it loads the first parts from CD and then the rest from stick. Because when I'm then in Ubuntu and try to format the stick, it says it can't do so, because there's system files from that stick in use.

I have a Windows laptop that isn't booting up anymore for some reason Safe Mode doesn't even work. Looking at what is printed out when it hangs, I did a search on google and it is some sort of HP laptop problem. Apparently the hard drive should still be OK, if only I can access it somehow. I was thinking maybe I could use one of those live Linux CDs to boot up. But I'm not too familiar with those. Would they be able to detect the laptop's DVD burner, and allow me to burn files off the NTFS partition to a blank DVD? I want to get my data off before I hand the laptop over to the IT department - who knows what they will do to it. So exactly which live Linux CD flavor should I use (my other working computer only has a CD burner)? And then would it be easy to burn a DVD after booting up the live Linux CD?

Installed Maverick on a T42 (Pentium M 1.70GHz, 1GB RAM, 20GB harddrive with 3.5GB available space) and everything is fine - except machine freezes occasionally and will not respond to anything except power cycling. Fires back up again and works fine until it happens again. It seems to happen when I am using any browser. Being new to Linux and Ubuntu, I have no idea how to even begin diagnosing the problem. Can anyone help or point me towards a tutorial on troubleshooting this installation?

I want to stay with release 10.10 (maverick) until the support expires. So how should I configure 'software sources' so that I don't get offered to upgrade to the next release (11.04?). When on 10.04, I had the 'show new distribution releases' set to 'Long term support releases only', but it didn't offer the upgrade from 10.04 to 10.10 unless I changed it to 'Normal releases'. Should I now be setting it back to 'Long term support releases only' in order to stay with maverick? What would I miss out on if I do that?

I tested 11.04 for a couple of days, and it was (my opinion, of course,) terrible! I want to try out Gnome Shell, but I'd rather do so on my 10.10 install, instead of having to mess with the mess of 11.04. Anybody know of a PPA that works with 10.10?
