I'm trying to setup a dual boot of windows 7 x64 and Ubuntu 10.10 i386. Before I got windows 7 and the new graphics card it ran 9.10 perfectly. If I take the card out (Nvidia 8800 Ultra), it will install fine but when I put the card back in, it crashes. It appears that it just doesn't like the card.

I have a dual boot system with Windows Vista and Ubuntu 10.04. How would I install it? I know how I would plug it in but setting it up is another issue. I want it to work on both Vista and Ubuntu. Another question is what I should do about my current integrated graphics (Do I disable it or something like that?)

I'm busy building a machine now and I'm looking to set up dual monitors because it's something I've always fancied but never had the resources to do. I'm basically looking for advice on choosing a graphics card that will support dual monitors with good driver support under Ubuntu. After a few hours of browsing the forums I determined nVidia were the way to go but I'm honestly not bothered if people want to suggest ATI. I'm not a gamer so really only need the card to support dual monitors. I'll also need to know how to set up the card under Ubuntu and then subsequently how to edit xorg.conf in order to get the dual monitors working.

I verified my system's(dual boot system) graphics card using windows OS and it showed NVIDIA Quadro FX 570, but in X11 configuration it shows "Card: VESA Framebuffer Graphics" and the Properties tab is not active.

I have an OSX Snow Leopard dual boot setup and my Ethernet card does not work. I was wondering if, because OSX is loosely linux based, the network drivers could somehow be loaded into my Snow Leopard install.
View 1 Replies View RelatedI'm running hardware already considered legacy and I was made painfully aware that those drivers, for ATI cards, are only available from Jessie repositories; yet, somehow I was able to have my system configured to run not the stock drivers the system used for installation but, allegedly, proprietary drivers.
I did notice an overall improvement on how the system displays everything on the screen but after fumbling around the system trying to install a game I had a message warning that only software acceleration was activated and not full hardware acceleration, which was what I was aiming at.
After going through a lot of guides on the web I was able to:
a) discover the system is running MESA drivers (or so I have understood)
b) install headers for my system but somehow along the way I fumbled whatever I was doing and I probably now have a lot of loose ends in the system
Being Debian (and rock solid) the system is still running smoothly but I really want to clean up after myself and correct what I can and improve where is possible.
I just got another video card from a friend and I wanted to see if I could get it to display a second screen. I have two monitors, both VGA CRT monitors. The first video card is a Geforce 8400gs pci-e and the card given to me is a Geforce FX 5500 pci. I could get them both to work separately under low graphics mode when I go into the bios and switch the video adapter from pci-e to pci, but not together. What to do to make both cards work in harmony?
View 4 Replies View RelatedI'd been using 10.04 for a while and then one day the computer wouldn't boot. It just loaded up to a low res purple screen with the loading dots on it and froze. I managed to get all my files back and everything and re-install and it was working fine until I enabled the graphics card and then the same problem occurred. I've isolated the problem to the graphics card. It's never given me issues before and I've been running Ubuntu for about 2 1/2 years now so I was kind of surprised.
It's an NVIDEA card by the way. Any suggestions as to what I should do? I need hardware support for graphics because I do some work in 2D and 3D and as such need to be able to do that stuff on my PC. I don't want to have to keep reinstalling to check if the graphics card is working again yet but it's the only thing I can think of =(
I installed a new graphics card (Nvidia GeForce GT240 1 Gb, 128bit DDR3) on my gigabyte VA900M motherboard, with my computer running a dual boot of windows 7 (64 bit) and ubuntu 9.10 (64 bit). The computer would not boot past the memory test stage. To solve this, i flashed the BIOS with the latest upgrade for the motherboard from the Gigabyte website. This still did not work, so, doing the usual "testing hardware combinations by unplugging and replugging", I removed 1 Gb of RAM, which solved the problem of booting past memory test (a case of too much memory?)
Problem: The problem now is, GRUB wont boot from the HD, unless I have the Windows 7 disk (or Ubuntu Live) in the DVD drive. If i dont press a key to boot from the disk, Grub will then load. how to make GRUB boot from the HD? Do I need to redirect/reinstall GRUB? Im pretty sure it is not a BIOS problem.
I have been unable to get the fancy purple bootsplash (plymouth) since I installed Lucid Lynx on my ThinkPad T43. The bootsplash would up when I had booted off of a Live CD, but all future instances post-install only shows the blinking terminal cursor, followed by the GNOME log in screen. This has occurred after upgrading from Karmic, and after attempting a fresh installation of Lucid. Here's what I've tried so far without success:
comment out "GRUB_HIDDEN_TIMEOUT=0" in the grub file tried running echo FRAMEBUFFER=y > /etc/initramfs-tools/conf.d/splash update-initramfs -u under su but it did not work because my conf.d directory doesn't contain a file called "splash", but only one file called "resume". This fix was taken from [URL]..A Google search showed that a lot of users with this problem have NVIDIA cards; however I'm running ubuntu on a system with an ATI card.
I'm having no end of problems trying to get 10.04 onto my older Toshiba Satellite A50 laptop that I use as a spare laptop round the house. The laptop previously dual booted with XP and Xubuntu fine. I wanted to give Lubuntu a go to see if it's performance was better on this older hardware. When installing I got the black screen of death, and also got the same problem with the Xubuntu CD. Research pointed me in the way of this article: [URL] I was able to boot the Lubuntu Live CD using the instructions outlined in method A.
Once installed however I rebooted and Grub seemed to be knackered. Just sent me to a recovery console of which I had no idea what to do. As I could no longer boot into Windows either I reinstalled Xubuntu 9.10 and all was fine. I decided yesterday to give it another bash this time connecting to my wireless from the live cd hoping it would download an update to fix this problem. Nadda, Grub this time did show and I was able to boot into XP, but upon picking my Linux distro I now get an unrecognised device error with a long string of charachters and then it dumps be back into the grub menu, choosing the recovery mode version does the same thing.
I'm just starting out with ubuntu (10.04), and installed it using a live cd on my alienware m5500. I had the update manager update everything, and then went looking on how to properly use my nvidia graphics card (geforce go 7600) because the graphics weren't looking very good, and I couldn't use any desktop effects.
I followed the directions found here in order to blacklist nouveou and enable the current nvidia driver. However after rebooting, and every time I time I turn on the computer, it never makes it to the desktop, i usually end up seeing the ubuntu startup and/or the nvidia logo before it proceeds to one of several screens (none of which allow me to click or type, although sometimes i can move the mouse).

Thinking that it could be one of the listed bugs from the directions, I followed the work around for "Screen Blanks/Monitor Turns Off", but the problem persists. I have used the live disc to do a fresh install and attempt it about 3 times.Anyone know what this could be, or have advice for troubleshooting? Let me know if I can provide any other information that may prove useful - I'm fairly new to linux in general, but I can probably get some information from recovery mode if I've got a little guidance.
I got Linux Ubuntu because my Vista installation messed up, and I couldnt find the recovery CD. Im pretty glad I installed Linux, as it seems really freidnly, and a bit more open that Windows, I must admit. The problem is, I am trying to install my Nvidia GeForce 8600GTS on the system, and it isnt working. It was working fine on Vista before, so it shouldnt be a hardware problem. I have followed various instructions on websites, whioch take me throguh some stuff about stopping GNOME, removing * linux restricted module * and so on. But when I get to the crucial point, with the agreements and installations for Nvidia, it tells me it cant detect any graphics cards.

View 5 Replies View RelatedI have just installed Ubuntu (9.10) and noted that in order to successfully run the trial off the CD I had to test in "safe graphics" mode. I have an NVIDIA GEforce 6600 GT card - which was discovered by Ubuntu in the first few minutes of the trial and so I activated the recommended driver and continued to test. After a successful trial I installed Ubuntu (dual partition Ubuntu / Windows XP), however, it seems the install didn't activate the required driver (as part of the process) and so I'm unable to get into my newly-installed Ubuntu at all. All I get is a flashing tty screen asking for my username and password - however it's erratic and won't recognise what I type. So - I'm stuck in a catch-22 as there doesn't seems to be a safe graphics mode option via the start (GRUB?) menu list.

I have been running fine, but when I run top, I see that compiz.real always takes up 100% of one of the cores of my CPU. this happens even when I change the visual effects to none in the appearance preferences. This problem starts as soon as I log in. My graphics card is an nvidia 8400gs, which is not that good, and I've installed my drivers using envy. Does anyone have any ideas about this problem?

Is the open source drive good enough to use or should I install the Nvidia driver? I know that things are generally easier with the default driver, especially for support on older cards, but I would like to get the best performance I can. This is for my Dad's computer, so he won't be playing any games, but if it will help with 2D and video that would be great.

I activated my graphics card on Linux Mint which is Nvidia GEFORCE GT 130M. Now when I boot up, after bios the loading screen looks like in the picture (sorry its crappy quality). When it gets to the login screen and afterwards it is just blank, but i can tell its running underneath because i can shut down by doing ctrl alt backspace and then tab and enter. I tried entering recovery mode but it was the same. Atm im using a live cd.

View 4 Replies View RelatedI have a windows 7 machine and installed ubuntu 10.4 32 bit in its own partition. I want to replace the 32 bit ubuntu installation with a 64 bit installation. I downloaded the 64 bit version, booted up on the install cd, and started the install. I got as far as the partition set up before chickening out. I was going to use the manual partition option, select the existing ubuntu partition, reformat, and install. I chickened out because i was afraid that this would also reinstall the grub boot loader without the dual boot option disabling my ability to get into win 7. How should i proceed so that i can replace the existing 32 bit ubuntu with a fresh 64 bit install and still be able to boot into win 7?
View 4 Replies View RelatedI currently have xp installed on the 1st partition and Ubuntu installed on the 2nd.Both partitions are on the same drive.(Being the 1st drive)I have just purchased a new case and some other components and wish to take the opportunity to change my current setup so that xp is on the 1st drive (alone) and Ubuntu on the 2nd drive (alone) Using clonezilla, I take a backup of each partition separately.I then copy back the xp partition to the 1st disk. I then copy back the Ubuntu partition to the 2nd disk.I gather at his point i run the live Ubuntu cd, open a terminal and run sudo update-grub.

Rebooted with saved xorg.conf file. I do see all monitors displaying their correct image. I am using Gnome 2 supplied with 11.3. The problem is: how do I start applications on the 2nd X server? If I use the application launcher on 2nd X server, the applications appear on the monitors of the 1st X server. I am also unable to move applications windows from one X server to the other.

But in ubuntu in the x server settings only one of the cards shows up. I was wondering if this is a 32 bit issue as in the past running 64 bit they have both shown up fine.

I've sort out the windows install, but cant get into ubuntu to update the drivers. It boots as far as console but just leaves me with the text screen. View 1 Replies View RelatedI am planning to move my main OS from Windows to Ubuntu (Yeah I am that impressed) but I wish to move windows to my current smaller hard drive until I find all ubuntu replacement programs i can use then eventually eject the windows drive. The problem is has we all know who dual-boot you have to install windows first before ubuntu as the windows mbr is when grub is stored and gets wiped when you install windows.
It must be possible to add windows as secondary OS while keeping / or reinstating grub must it not it surely (eg on 10.4LTS release it would be ok, but if i installed windows vista or 7 on my secondary hardisk it would destroy grub).
I have always use dual-booting vista--ubuntu, I am getting bit tired of windows, so I want to install ubuntu, specially lucid is coming soon. I want to have the possibility to install windows in case I will need it in the future, like working with Visual Studio, ubuntu always detect if windows is installed, if windows is installed first, does windows also detect if ubuntu is installed ?

After a bit of poking around, I've heard about a script that does the editing for you built in to Linux (or maybe just Ubuntu).
My questions are:
- If the aforementioned script does exist, how do I use it?
- else if it doesn't exist, how do I not directly edit grub.cfg?
