I have installed d4x its not showing in Ubuntu 11.04 dash but its showing as installed in software center. I have tried the command of "which d4x" and I got nothing.

I am running ubuntu 11.04. Compiz seems to be installed as shown by green in Synaptic along with some other related packages. I have now marked compiz-fusion bcop & Emerald & installed them. Both turned green in Synaptic. While Emerald Manager is seen in the System Preference list, Compiz is not seen anywhere. How to launch Compiz?

1- tar xvzf OOo_3.0.0_LinuxIntel_install_xxxxxx.tar.gz
2- su to root
3- cd into the RPMS( where all RPMS package were present)
4- BY RPMS auto installer. I install all package.
There are two folder in my "/opt" folder. openoffice.org and openoffice.org3. But office is not shown in application start menu, but when we check it by add/remove software option this is show that it install.
I installed sun virtual box 3.1 by double clicking on its .deb package and it said it has been successfully installed, but I can't see it in the applications menu, what's wrong ? It's listed under synaptic package as installed after completing the installation
View 3 Replies View RelatedI just reinstalled Ubuntu Lucid Lynx and an old problem has come back. For some reason I couldn't fix it even in my previous installation. The problem is the top gnome panel. See the photo below: As you can see, the network icon is not shown properly while the Me menu is being shown twice. I can't even restart or log out or shut down at this situation without pressing the keystroke to turn the power off.

It is still showing an upgrade to 8.10. I have been waiting to upgrade while exploring and using the 8.04 LTS Hardy. Now that it has been released it isn't showing on the update manager.
View 4 Replies View RelatedI like the way 10.04 lts is running on my old PC, except I can't seem to install my HP 895C. This printer worked on previous releases on Ubuntu. The printer is local and cabled to the PC's parallel port. But "Add" under printing doesn't show any parallel printers under local printers. Only shows serial port, other, and network printers. Is this because 10.04 is beta? "Troubleshooting printers" doesn't have a list of printers. Is the lpt1 in PC speak /dev/lp0 in Linux? Should that be the printer URI?

Also, on the where to install to step, Where at the top it should say that another operating system is installed, it is blank.
I'm wondering if I continue the installation, on boot-up will it detect windows?
I have searched this, and after 15 pages of results, I have not come to a definite conclusion.
Have just installed Ubuntu 11.04, the system is to dual boot with XP.Ubuntu is installed, have been into it and it seems to be working fine. However, when I bootup the computer I get no "Grub!" [Grub is now going to take over the boot process textual alert]. And, once the system gets past that screen, there is no list of Operating Systems to boot choices. Just boots straight into Ubuntu - always.
Solved that by installing 'Startup Manager' (which I knew about from slight previous exposure to Linux) and set the default operating system to Windows XP - this means that now I can't get into Ubuntu.How do I get Grub to show that 'Grub alert'? And how do I get Grub to offer choices of OS to boot in to?
I would like to install pymedia on my ubuntu 9.10 karmic distribution, but I am having a bit of a hard time doing that.I managed to install all the libraries (lame, libogg, libvorbis etc.) but when trying to run 'python setup.py build' I get an error (Shown at the end).I found on the interwebs that it may have to do with the version of gcc c++ compiler running (currently gcc-4.4) and that it only works with gcc-3.x. Therefore I downloaded gcc-3.4 (from the old jaunty archive), and with this one still no joy.NebelhomP.S. I am not a complete newcomer to linux and python but I am not an expert so it may happen that I ask questions with a very obvious answer.

View 1 Replies View RelatedI'm trying to upgrade my current fedora 8 box to fedora 10. I downloaded the cd images and burned from the fedora website. After I booted my laptop using the fedora installation cd, the anaconda program started and went immediately to the keyboard selection, language selection, etc. but no upgrade option screen was shown at all until the point that I have to choose my partitions where it was obvious that a fresh installation was being done.
Using crtl+f2 I checked the /tmp/anaconda.log file, whoch has the warning: "step install type does not exist". At this point I do not know exactly what is going on.
I have just installed Linux on a partition of my hard drive. Computer boots up and gives me the grub boot screen where I can choose from: ubuntu, some memory tests and windows recovery environment (loader). But no Windows Vista. When I boot the windows recovery option the windows boot loading screen comes up but then the screen turns blank but the hard drive is still working and the wifi light also comes on my keyboard. Ubuntu is working completely fine I just need to find a way of getting Grub to display Vista instead of the Recovery environment.

I installed FC10 but can not see mouse pointer (it was so also during the installation process). Mouse is working, Crtl shows pointer's position, moving over sensitive areas activates them but no pointer can be seen. The Mouser Property Tool doesn't show the part for selecting pointer themes (as given in Help). FC9 on the same computer worked ok, FC10 on other computers work ok, too.
View 8 Replies View RelatedI had F11 which was working OK'ish on my laptop and decided to upgrade to F12 when it was available. This was not too successful and I started getting problem with updates to the extent that I could not install any as I got errors which stopped the updates. Bit the bullet and backed up all the data then wiped the disk and started from a clean downloaded DVD of the full F12. Still getting problems running the updates (output below) and trying to install/run VirtualBox is also failing (also below). The build and source mentioned show as broken links, where do I go next?

i'm tying to dual boot Vista64 (already installed) and Fedora 10 x86_64. I am running a Dell XPS 410 running 2 sata hard drives raid 0 (ICH8DH). I started the process by shrinking my C drive on disk0 leaving 64.45GB of unallocated space. Next I rebooted into Fedora install DVD and when i get to blue graphical install screen i get message asking if my drive is GPT and if it is it may be corrupted. I click NO, and it comes up with a message telling me i have to initialize my drive if i want to use it ( have to click NO twice) and if i do it i will lose all my data.
i can click no and keep proceding through the install until i get to the partition setup screen. No hard drives or partitions are shown. I've tried googling the problem and get bits of pieces of information scattered in different parts but nothing conclusive to my problem i think. As far as my background of knowledge goes, I'm new to the linux community but give me a thorough guide and i'll do fine (i hope). I've been using fedora on a separate laptop for 2 days now .
I am trying to install 10.04 32bit onto a new 1.5TB harddrive. I had previously installed 10.04 64bit on an old drive in the same nmachine. I partitioned and formatted the new drive using the old system. I have a couple of windows partitions and restored Win2K images to them, 4 formated Ext3 partions for whever flavour of Linux appeals to me a swap and two huge NTFS Data (home) and work areas. I installed Grub on the new drive, it also has its own partition for boot config files. The old drive has now gone.
Grub2 boots OK and gives me option for all the OS's even the one that are gone, thats OK I can fix that later with grub-update. Win2K boots fine and I see my NTFS partitions.
Now I boot from the Live i386 CD and chosse to install Ubuntu. The only thing that not allowed to default is where to install. Specify partition manually, Choose a spare 20GB Ext3 and the swap is already there too. I let it reformat to Ext3 and mount as /. (In Advanced I let the install boot loader default to ticked on /dev/sda )
The install goes OK until I hit the pop-up "Installation Failed". The installed encountered an unrecoverable error. A desktop session will be run etc etc..
I have tried this at least 10 times no. I downloaded and cut a new CD even though the old one worked fine on another box. Tried unticking the boot loader. Disable the floppy, removed the floppy.
I am relatively new to Ubuntu. Where do I look for the cause of the problem? I'll cut and paste the install log files in a moment.

Ubuntu 10.4 64 bit OS - 8GB RAM is shown as 7.8GB - why? where is the rest gone? or is it just my math?
I am running PunBB on my home server (Lubuntu). It works fine while browsing the site from my desktop computer via internal IP. When I access the domain name from outside my router it does not display the site correctly, instead of a nice php site, it pulls up a site that looks like no php was used.If I try and access a index.html page (instead of the index.php) on my server from the outside it works real quick with no problems.

Everytime I attempt to install anything, in any way, I'm given the following error message:

I went into Synaptics Package Manager and told it to uninstall WINE in case that was what was causing the problems. It sort of half-uninstalled-it then gave me that exact same error message.I have two threads currently open on the forums - adjusting laptop brightness and flashing BIOS - and both problems hit a brick wall because of this same error message.
I had been using ubuntu for quite a while.But alas , I had to switch to WinXp when I started learning VS using its IDE.I installed Windows over Ubuntu wiping its grub.I hoped I will repair grub when I would need to.Now when I boot from Live CD to install grub it can't find the installation present.Moreover,when I try to make a fresh installation it can't find any Operating System in the HDD and asks to format WHOLE.. hard disk to make partition table and continue installation.
View 9 Replies View RelatedI have had Ubuntu on my own laptop for a few weeks, and I really like it. I bought my daughter a new mini laptop (Samsung N130) a few days ago, which came with XP. It has no CD/DVD drive, so I downloaded Ubuntu onto a 2GB memory stick, and installed it from there. The installation went fine, but I can't go online. When I click on the network manager icon there is no wireless network shown. It only shows wired network and VPN connections. If I right-click, it doesn't show 'enable wireless', just 'enable networking'. I think I have switched on the wireless network card, which seems to be F9 on her laptop, with an antenna icon. There is an LED showing with that same icon.

View 9 Replies View RelatedFor two of my partitions on sda (they are NTFS parts) I have configured them via the NTFS Configuration Tool to mount at boot. This is OK - I can see them in Places, Computer; they are listed together with the mounted icon to the right. However, there is also two other partitions listed - that are not shown as mounted - with the same label name. (I can also see these duplicate parts listed if I click on Places ad look down at the various devices attached under Computer). If I right click on these unmounted parts I see there is a greyed out option to Remove. How do I remove these duplicate partitions?
View 1 Replies View RelatedI have googled and looked around on the forums but I couldn't find anything that directly answers my question. I have a dual boot set up with Vista and Ubuntu 9.10. My hard drive is partitioned into dev/sda1 (where Vista resides) and dev/sda2 (where Ubuntu resides) and /dev/sda4 which I use as a shared hard drive for the two operating systems.
When I first installed Ubuntu on dev/sda2 I used gparted to make /dev/sda2 a 10 GB partition becuase I wanted to try putting ubuntu on a very small partition. Since then I used gparted to expand /dev/sda2 to 32GB. But when I use System Monitor (System--->Adminstrative----->System Monitor) it shows only that the /dev/sda2 space is 10GB (and says that there are only 2.9 GB) remaining unused. Yet when I use gparted to look at the partitions, it says that /dev/sda22 is 32 GB with 3.9 GB remaining unused.
I am wondering if anyone knows why they show two different sizes and what I can do to fix the size being shown. When I tried to make a tar gz back up of my system iit returned a message warning me that my /dev/sda2 partition was almost full because it put the 1.5 GB tar gz file in my home drive (which I suppose the system monitor only sees as a 10 GB space that already has 7 GB in it).
