Fedora Installation :: No Upgrade Option Shown During F10?

Jun 8, 2009

I'm trying to upgrade my current fedora 8 box to fedora 10. I downloaded the cd images and burned from the fedora website. After I booted my laptop using the fedora installation cd, the anaconda program started and went immediately to the keyboard selection, language selection, etc. but no upgrade option screen was shown at all until the point that I have to choose my partitions where it was obvious that a fresh installation was being done.

Using crtl+f2 I checked the /tmp/anaconda.log file, whoch has the warning: "step install type does not exist". At this point I do not know exactly what is going on.

Fedora Installation :: Not Able To Use Upgrade Option With LVM?

Mar 11, 2009

Installed fc8 about a year ago. Had to use text mode because of nvidia video card, but got everything working fine. Dual boot with separate physical drives. (XP on 250G, sda; fc8 on 80 G, sdb). Now trying to replace fc8 with fc10 and hope it will work just as good (still have to use text installation) . However, I have some specific questions as I go:

#1. When I try to use the upgrade existing system option, I get an error that says: "Error mounting device / dev/VolGroup001/.Log Vol100 as /: mount: Special device /dev/ dev/VolGroup00/LogVol00 does not exist." Does this mean I need to do a fresh install of fc10, instead of upgrade?

#2 (Backed up and started fresh install). Made the selection to only re-partition and use the 80G (sdb) drive. (leaving the 250G, sda disk alone)..However, the partition table that produces shows values for the sda (250G)disk partitions that will be somewhat different (maybe not significantly) than those I observed in XP's disk manager tool. (For instance Windows says my ntfs partition is 206GB, yet the partition table in the fc10 installer (text mode) says ntfs partition will be 211GB). Is this normal? A 5GB difference? (This is where I aborted the install).

#3 I just want to replace fc8 with fc10, and have it work just like before. One more thing: If I go ahead with fresh installation of fc10 will it give me the option of leaving Grub as it is? (on sdb1 and chainload to XP?) Am hooked on Fedora, but need my 250G drive just as it is.

Fedora Installation :: Upgrade Option Doesn't Appear In Boot Menu

Jul 2, 2009

I have a /boot partition, and the online update process has downloaded the upgrade to /boot/upgrade. The problem is that grub is actually booting from a directory /boot which is in the root partition, but is invisible once the machine has booted, because the /boot partition is mounted over it. The result of all this is that the upgrade option does not appear in the boot menu, because that option has been inserted in the menu.lst (or grub.conf) in the /boot partition. is it ok for me to run:grub-install /dev/sda4(that's the device that contains the /boot partition where the upgrade menu option and data). Also, do I need the --root-directory option, given that the boot directory is the root directory of that partition.

Ubuntu :: 252 Updates Shown But Option Buttons Grayed Out

Mar 9, 2009

I just installed Ubuntu 8.1 on a Mac Pro using VMWare. It prompted me that updates are due so I selected to update. Now it's at the Update Manager showing 252 updates and all boxes such as close, check, and install updates, are all greyed out and the cursor is showing the circle that it's working on something. I had this happen a few days ago so I rebooted. This is the 2nd time trying this and I'm stuck at the same prompt.

I have even manually gone into the update manager and selected even to check for updates and it freezes up. I have tried to search for a specific file and the same thing happens. I have used previous versions of Ubuntu and never had this problem. I even went as far as doing a fresh install and had the same problem.

Ubuntu Installation :: Upgrade 10.10 To 11.04 Option Missing On CD?

Apr 28, 2011

I downloaded the release version of 11.04 desktop 32bit today and ran into a problem with the upgrade. Not sure if I missed a step or not, but when I booted the CD to do an Install of 11.04 desktop 32bit over 10.10 desktop 32bit I expected to see the upgrade option similar to what is in this link (red arrow pointing to it):[URL]... On my install screen all the other options were there except the upgrade.

Since I was on a schedule for this particular computer I am doing the Update Manager Network upgrade instead but I have 3 other computers to do as well. Any ideas on what I might have missed? Should I have booted to Live version first instead of Install then look for an upgrade option somewhere? I read something that alluded to that on a website.

I installed the RC of Lucid on an old AMD X2 5600 w/4GB DDR2 ram, and put it in the other room and installed LAMP on it to use as a local development server. It works beautifully over the network.

1. There will be an upgrade option to go from RC to final release, right?

2. When upgrading, will this kill my LAMP install? I really don't wanna go from scratch now that I have it all up and running with a load of CMS systems installed for test environments

Fedora Installation :: F12 - Builds And Source Shown As Broken Links

Mar 10, 2010

I had F11 which was working OK'ish on my laptop and decided to upgrade to F12 when it was available. This was not too successful and I started getting problem with updates to the extent that I could not install any as I got errors which stopped the updates. Still getting problems running the updates (output below) and trying to install/run VirtualBox is also failing (also below). The build and source mentioned show as broken links, where do I go next?

Fedora Installation :: Dual Boot Vista - No Hard Drives Or Partitions Are Shown

Feb 9, 2009

i'm tying to dual boot Vista64 (already installed) and Fedora 10 x86_64. I am running a Dell XPS 410 running 2 sata hard drives raid 0 (ICH8DH). I started the process by shrinking my C drive on disk0 leaving 64.45GB of unallocated space. Next I rebooted into Fedora install DVD and when i get to blue graphical install screen i get message asking if my drive is GPT and if it is it may be corrupted. I click NO, and it comes up with a message telling me i have to initialize my drive if i want to use it ( have to click NO twice) and if i do it i will lose all my data.

i can click no and keep proceding through the install until i get to the partition setup screen. No hard drives or partitions are shown. I've tried googling the problem and get bits of pieces of information scattered in different parts but nothing conclusive to my problem i think. As far as my background of knowledge goes, I'm new to the linux community but give me a thorough guide and i'll do fine (i hope). I've been using fedora on a separate laptop for 2 days now .

Fedora Installation :: 12 - Get The BIOS To Have A USB Option?

Mar 31, 2010

I'm completely new to Fedora, though not to Linux (I'm switching from Ubuntu 9.10, now) and am having a few problems getting it installed. I followed the installation instructions, torrented the i386 DVD image, and put it on a 4gb USB drive using UNetbootin.

This is where my problems started. I restarted the computer, figured out which F key I needed to press to select the boot source, and then there wasn't a USB boot option. I've looked all over the place (using Google) and can't find out how to get the BIOS to have a USB option there-- I'm using a Toshiba Satellite A10, and that doesn't come with the USB boot option.

Now I'm trying to either figure out how to add the USB boot option or find another way to install. Burning a DVD (or CDs) doesn't work, as I don't have the resources to do so. I've seen somewhere that there's a way to install from a hard drive partition, but no instructions on how to do so (if someone could point me to a way to do that, it seems to be my best option right now-- if it even exists).

Fedora Installation :: Partitioning Wizard Has No Option For XFS

Oct 12, 2009

I need to make a fresh new installation of KDE Fedora 11 where some partitions are formatted using XFS. The installer's partitioning wizard has no option for XFS. I've been able to load the XFS module as root (modprobe xfs) but it looks like the XFS tools are completely missing.
Two of these partitions are / and /home so it'd be quite hard to do the "switch" after the installation.

I have read the FAQs at [URL] as well as the XFS thing by Colin Charles. But as I am new to Fedora I don't understand the sentence "At the installer prompt, type this ...". If the installed is the bootloader, then adding the xfs in the end of the boot line won't help. If the installer is the iconized program I see on the desktop after the end of the boot, the it's name is "liveinst" and adding the xfs option won't help.

Fedora Installation :: Get System Restore Option For XP After Install

Jan 31, 2009

probably did something stupid.. just haven't figured out what yet.. hope someone can point me in the right direction. daughters computer broke, maybe virus, so i did clean reinstall of xp. decided to give her a couple of linux distros, thinking maybe they are safer for when she is surfing..

Used gparted to repartition hd:

Partition table entries are not in disk order

Installed Ubuntu 8.04. was then able to boot into either ubuntu or xp. next installed fedora 10. new menu.lst did not show ubuntu, only fedora and xp. had some lockups in fedora, and had to pull plug to reboot 2 or 3 times. replaced power supply. added ubuntu into menu.lst. boots into fedora and ubuntu fine. tried to boot xp, and get "Preparing System Recovery Option", then PC Angel appears, and it wants me to use the system restore option for xp.

Is there something i can do to recover xp without having to wipe the hd and reinstall xp, then reinstall ubuntu and fedora (and if i do all that, how can i be sure i don't end up with the same problem?

Fedora Installation :: Blank Screen After Install Option Set

Nov 21, 2010

I am trying to use a F14 network install CD to upgrade on an old HP Pavilion 9695C (Athalon 850MHz, nVidia NV5 RIVA TNT2/TNT2 Pro AGP) with F12 on it. This same disk successfully upgraded a HP Omnibook 6000 with F12. I boot with the network install CD and get the initial menu to select to install/upgrade, install using basic video driver, etc. After selecting either upgrade or basic video driver install, I see the CD being read, then nothing, just a blank screen. I had a similar problem with F12 network install on this machine. So I tried adding "vga=0x318 nomodeset" to the upgrade boot options. The only difference is a quick flash on the screen, then a blinking "underscore character" cursor. The "install using basic video driver" has the same result.

Have also tried:linux nofb
vga=791 [nomodeset]
vga=1 [nomodeset]
xdriver=nv nomodeset
xdriver=vesa nomodeset

However, I always end up with a blank screen or blank screen with blinking underscore cursor. I know this particular AGP has problems with the nouveau driver. On F12 I had to force it to use the nv driver. I submitted a bug but there was no interest on it as this was F12 and F13 was the latest at the time. I did try to upgrade to F13, but ran into this same problem. I was hoping F14 would be better.
