Ubuntu Installation :: Cups Will Not Start On New Installation Of Natty?
May 17, 2011
I am unable to print on a new installation of Natty. The print configuration utility reports that no printing service is available. I have comfirmed that cups is installed and get a positive response to "whereis cupsd" When I attempt to start cups from the cl (service cups start) I receive the following response: start: Rejected send message, 1 matched rules; type="method_call", sender=":1.63" (uid=1000 pid=5577 comm="start cups ") interface="com.ubuntu.Upstart0_6.Job" member="Start" error name="(unset)" requested_reply=0 destination="com.ubuntu.Upstart" (uid=0 pid=1 comm="/sbin/init"))
There are no errors produced in the logs - either cups or syslog and if I turn apparmour to complain mode nothing improves: sudo aa-complain cupsd
I am aware of this post: [URL]... but since the workaround has no effect and in the absence of error messages I am not sure that it applies and cannot implement - and note that no print drivers are in play since I can't get cups to start.
After my update to 9.10 I had not notice that CUPS, Samba, lighttpd (and maybe other serives that I've not missed until now) don't start up during system start no longer. After all, things look quite normal in the directory /etc/rc3.d, which has the appropriate links S20samba, S20lighttpd and S50cups, all of them working when I use them directly. But wait! Ubuntu uses updstart now, does it? I have yet to understand what that means to the classic startup scripts in /etc/init.d.
so i have installed compiz 9 and it didn't quite work for me, then i have reverted to compiz 8 and things where fine, but after a while my desktop started slowing down for no apparent reason, so i decided to install the nVIDIA drivers from the manufacturer's site, good, i typed in:
Code: sudo /etc/init.d/gdm stop and then i installed the drivers with the sh command, stuff went right, but i could not
My installation of IBM5250 was successful in Natty but I am unable to start the emulator. Below is the error I am getting. Ibm5250 5250: [ INFORMATIONAL ]: Build Date: March 2008 (1.6). 5250: [ DEBUG ]: RegistryInfo::WhichKeyboard(): Could not open file /etc/X11/XF86Config or /etc/X11/xorg.conf. 5250: [ ERROR ]: ***** There are no fixed or scalable fonts unavailable ***** ***** Session not starting. My recently installed OS, keeps on displaying a GRUB menu instead of the normal screen and has an option of normal start up or ( I forgot what it's called but some sort of .. ) Fixing Option. It has worked before but yesterday the error wouldn't stop coming up after it randomly crashed while the computer was working. I haven't tried it again today, but will do soon. The first option of normal boot up said something like 0x01002 is in use and didn't load.
The second one occasionly came up with an option for normal boot after it had 'Fixed' it. But most times it would come up with some terminal like dialogue, then stop and not load, don't know if it crashed or what ? Hope this is enough information for you, but as I'm only 12, I don't have a clue what to do, except the obvious option of rebooting again and again.
installed lenny and am trying to install brother dcp7010 again:
1) i can't start CUPS server with /etc/init.d/cups restart "file not found", there is a cups@ link in /etc/init.d.
2) when i install dcp7010 cupswrapper
dpkg -i cupswrapperDCP7010-2.0.1-2.i386.de it ends with " lpinfo: Verbindung zum Server nicht mglich: Verbindungsaufbau abgelehnt lpadmin: Verbindung zum Server nicht mglich: Verbindungsaufbau abgelehnt" (connection to server not possible, refused)
3)[URL] doesn't work.
4)foomatic-gui can't find the installed dcp7010 lpr-driver
brdcp7010lpr-2.0.1-1.i386.deb, (a couple of days ago it did)
This is frustrating because it worked in etch and worked for awhile in lenny. The dcp7010-scanner does work.
Is there a way to upgrade cups to support the latest printers? For example if I am using 8.04 LTS server and I buy a newish printer, it won't work. Am I able to add a repository or apt-get upgrade to get the latest version?
I'm having trouble installing 10.04, from a live dvd. The installation proceeds until 95% complete (running dpkg) then my computer shuts down. I can boot the system, but cannot download upgrades or get cups to work.
I just upgraded to ubuntu 11.04 - now localhost:631 (CUPS) doesn't work anymore. However, I can still print. When I try to reload on localhost:631 I get: "Unable to connect - Firefox can't establish a connection to the server at localhost:631."
This is really really annoying. Please help. I've tried to google a lot, but I cannot see what's wrong. I've tried to completely re-install all cups-packages with synaptic, but that didn't work. Right now I think cups is running: $ status cups cups start/running, process 899 Worst thing is that previously today,
I've setup two printers through a system running Ubuntu server that are shared with 30-40 users on our school network.
If the printers run out of ink or paper, they stop printing. The lazier members of staff don't proceed to recharge the ink or paper so when somebody does, hours later, the old jobs start printing again which the teachers no longer need or want.
I'd like to automatically have my system purge print jobs older than 1 hour. I'm running CUPS and sharing the printers through SAMBA. How do I do this?
I have 3 computers connected to a router; the ip addresses are assigned by the ADSL provider via DHCP. One of the 3 computer has a printer connected. In Fedora 9 I used to print from the other. 2 computers via CUPS by defining the ServerName in /etc/cups/client.conf as assigned by mDNS (the one with the .local suffix). It seems that in Fedora11 the game dos not work anymore; the connection is forbidden unless, you put the IP address of ServerName in /etc/cups/client.conf. But this is upractical because the IP address is not fixed. (DHCP) A workaround is possible because ping on the name assigned by mDNS shows the IP address; if you capture the IP address, it is possible to create /etc/cups/client.conf with the IP address at boot. (A suitable script can do the job).
What is the command to install CUPS and Samba, like yum install. I don't want to be installing wrong things and then end up with dependency problems, and after that what do i need to configure to have CUPS print from the localhost, and so that other computers from the networks also be able to print from the server, that is i'm workin on a server. As for samba i just need the installation command, then i want to figure the rest out.
My Windows Vista installation won't start after upgrading from Karmic to Lucid. If I select it on GRUB2, it leaves a blinking cursor on screen. And I tried doing the whole test disk thing and the boot info script. This is what my Results.txt file says
I am on Ubuntu 10.04. I had a network printer added, but suddenly now the printer seems to have disappeared. What's more, System->Administration->Printing doesn't allow me to add a new printer. The System->Admin.->Printing troubleshoot said the following:
"The CUPS print spooler does not appear to be running. To correct this, choose System->Administration->Services from the main menu and look for 'cups'". System->Admin.->Services does not exist. Searching on the net led me to believe that /etc/init.d/cups start would start cups for me, but that does not seem to be happening.
I recently installed Natty (64 bit version) and I have been enthusing about it on the testimonials page. Everything worked perfectly until tonight! I've been using the Unity interface with the Nouveau/Gallium 3D experimental driver and it has worked perfectly - but tonight the computer informed me that I do not have the required 3D support and defaulted to the Gnome interface with no Compiz available. I don't know what has happened but I can't get anything else to load.
I've tried re-installing the driver but it makes no difference. I don't want to install the "blob" and I don't see why I should have to when it worked before.Iv'e tried installing an openGL game (Chromium BSU) and it runs perfectly so the 3D acceleration is working - unity should run!
I have done a fresh installation of Natty and as expected it installed LibreOffice. What I would like is to install OpenOffice but it doesn't seem to be in the repositories. I know LibreOffice is a complete replacement for OpenOffice. However, the LibreOffice Base component is buggy [URL]. Hence I cannot use it at the moment. I did think about downloading the debs from the OpenOffice website, but the OpenOffice Base component doesn't seem to be included in the packages (?)What I would like is to have OpenOffice and LibreOffice installed side by side.
Today I've upgraded my Maverick installation to Natty using the "do-release-upgrade" command. The upgrade completed successfully according to the tool, but after I rebooted my system and chose "Ubuntu, with Linux 2.6.38-8-generic" in GRUB my screen went black showing an blinking underscore and rebooted after approx. five seconds. When I entered the Safe Boot environment the last thing my system did before rebooting was attaching the SCSI devices but didn't show any error message. Same with (successful) clean installation from Desktop-CD and Alternate-CD on a clean HDD. After I upgraded I still had access to the "Previous Linux Versions" option in Grub, but when I started the Maverick kernel my system displayed a blinking underscore for about 30 minutes - until I shut it off. In the Safe Boot environment of the old kernel the "Failsafe X" option resulted in the blinking underscore again. This happens with the final version, but also happened with the alpha and beta versions. Ubuntu is the only OS on my PC. I only tried this with the GNOME version of Ubuntu, but will try to use Xubuntu now.
The version of PHP installed on my Natty box is as follows :
However I require the use of PHP 5.1.6 for a certain environment scenario, the below link shows how to downgrade to PHP 5.2 from 5.3 by switching the lucid with karmic repos & using apt-get update [url]
A question: go from PHP 5.3 to 5.1, can I apply the same procedure as mentioned in the above link with the Ubuntu repos for PHP 5.1?? & if so which Ubuntu version repos do I need to replace with?
<Resolved>I am trying Natty in Virtualbox in my Maverick host and I want to install a repository. Can someone remind me how to reinstall the, now missing, Software Sources back into "System Administration"?
today i upgraded to natty and it went well (except for mistake of not removing ati driver before upgrading what caused 2 hours of me fixing..).. now i have weird problem - there no unity. my desktop looks the same as before - docky and 1 gnome panel, no matter what session i choose (unity or classic).. this is good news for unity haters, but i did upgrade because i wanted unity.i guess i have to run something to set defaults on system...
I've just installed Natty Narwhal onto my laptop, but I cannot find Unity 3D, only 2D. I've installed the propriety NVIDIA drivers, but there still is no 3D option.I've also seen no one who likes Unity, but I do.
I've tried both the DVD and CD, the CD with both usb-creator-kde and unetbootin. The results are the same always, the USB boots, into the splash screen, I select Start Kubuntu, it goes to the loading screen. After some seconds it starts scrolling a wall of text, gives some error about not being able to write or read /root/var/* because they don't exists and end up on a BusyBox with (initramfs) prompt.
I need to install the system on a new disk (2tb) instead of upgrading because I have to send the current one (1tb) to replacement. Could the large 2tb disk be a problem? I tried unplugging all disks and leaving just the disk I want to install to, but no deal... (both are SATA).(Checked the md5sum and they both match for DVD and CD...)
Having a problem in installing Natty onto my ASUS EEEPC. Ive already changed the boot menu to install from USB, however, it will not mount the USB in order for it to boot. I created the image using the Ubuntu startup disk creator and also downloaded the image from the ubuntu website (ive already read about the faults with using some torrents). I know the USB stick works and is bootable as ive installed Natty onto a Acer aspire netbook using it. how i could get the USB to mount so i am able to install Natty.
I have successfully upgraded from 10.10 to 11.04, computer was rebooted and I got working Ubuntu Natty. I did not altered any settings and switched computer off. When I tried to boot computer today I got Ubuntu load screen, but OS does not load properly (only load screent, startup sound and that's all).I am able to load terminal as root. How can I troubleshot my problem?
