Today I installed ubuntu on my second hard drive with the default settings. When it went to do a system restart, it asked me to remove the CD from the drive. I did so and hit enter, and since then it has been stuck on a screen that claims it is restarting:[3766.525721] Restarting System..

I'm trying to upgrade from 9.10 to 10.4 on an R51 thinkpad. 9.10 was current and up to date (did that right before the upgrade). All seemed to be going well, but the system appears frozen during "installing the upgrades". At the time of the freeze, it said "about 2 hours 5 minutes remaining" that was ~5.5 hrs ago. The system is locked up, unresponsive. do I force a reboot, and hope for the best? let it sit and assume that it is doing something? The bad thing is that I missed a folder (wife's) in my backup of data prior to upgrade. So getting that back is important.

I'm updating the netbook version of 10.04 to 10.10. It is apparently asking for user input regarding Grub. However I cannot move the windows around to click 'ok' nor will the keyboard function. No Alt+Tab, The terminal in the background will not get focus so I can't type in there, I can't get that little window 'Configu..' to get focus so I could just hit enter.
I can however click on all the icons on the left side of the title menu barBut only those. So I could logout if needed, but what would that do in the middle of an upgrade? It is honestly stuck, and I have little hope that I still have a usable system and will have to install from scratch. And I'm really fearful that grub is toast. And I'll first have to remove grub with a windows bootcd (it's a dual boot system). Which is hard since it's a netbook without a cd (will have to use a boot usb drive somehow)

I am reinstalling ubuntu mavericks as I could not get the first install to work right. I installed from a CD that I burned. 3/4 of the way through the "installing system" process the screen went dead. The cursor does not respond nor does anything happen with the keyboard. Be aware that I don't know very many things about what a keyboard can do. The screen has been frozen for about a half hour now.

I let the update manager run overnight on my netbook because it was taking a while. When I woke up, my netbook was off. It may have shut off during the updates. Now, when I turn it on, it gets to the login screen but the keyboard and mouse don't work. Is there anything I can do without a Live CD? Unfortunately I don't have a flash drive or anything with me.

My hard disk is blank now due to some faults I made in installation.I made a USB stick from which can start Fedora 10 livecd image successfully. My USB device is only 2GB, so livecd image is my only choice. Everything is fine in live cd system. but when I try to install system to hard disk, my PC got frozen - no responses from anything. This situation only happens when I set up the partition and began to write image to the hard disk. It happens at about 5 percent of the progress bar every time. It seems I can't install F10 this way.
So I tried another way : using this LiveCD USB Stick, install it in text mode. However, strange thing came up too: when I finished install the system , it tips "reboot". so I pressed "reboot", however it start KDE and then got frozen again. When I restart PC by "reset" button, it tips me can't find OS - insert system disk and press Enter. It's a BIOS message , so I think at least GRUB is not working. But why and how this happens? I set up them correctly without error tips. But now it can't be started. I set GRUB to be installed in MBR during the installation. My hardware is like this : AMD 5000+ black edition , 4GB RAM , ati 3200 video card , 320GB hard disk (sata port).

Tried to install Fedora 11 from CD Live, CD, DVD, USB. In all cases installation (actaully, the boot) hangs up with the screen suddenly frozen and getting into weird greenish-bluish-whitish colors (see screenshots attached). The laptop is Cameron Maxmedia with AMD PCS.

I just installed F14 which generally went well. I then did an install of kmod-nvidia and now the system hangs on start up. I see a couple of warnings and failures regarding the nvidia.ko module, and then the startup script stops after Starting atd: [OK] The screen flashes a couple of times and then is non-responsive. I can't even seem to get to the command line to back out the kmod-nvidia installation.

Every where I look online, people are posting ridiculous non-working ways to upgrade their system from one release to another--they do not work for me and I need a definite expert reply. I am working with a fresh install of Debian Lenny/Stable and wish to upgrade to the frozen Squeeze distribution. Supplementing the word "squeeze" in place of "lenny" in my sources.list file does not work and believe this to be an inappropriate way of upgrading. I have tried upgrading apt, dpkg, and aptitude before beginning the upgrade process, cleaning dpkg cache, rebooting, etc.
After updating the above packages I tried all methods of upgrading: safe-upgrade, full-upgrade, and dist-upgrade. All produce dependency problems and try to remove the gnome-desktop package or upgrade everything else except gnome-desktop. (Other packages are also affected, gnome-desktop is the most important in this instance). As I understand it, when upgrading you can comment out the volatile repositories as well as the security updates, is this correct?--either way I have tried countless combination's off commenting/uncommenting to try to get the needed results. I do not want use sid repos or reinstall.

I'm trying to install Fedora 10 on my samsung HDTV with my PC hooked up via DVI-HDMI. All the text screens look fine, but when it loads the graphic installer, the video gets corrupted, but i have a mouse, but a few seconds later it freezes and hangs, and I can't do anything. Nothing loads. This happens with the livecd's as well.

It seems as though every time that I want to grab a multi-arch, netinstall ISO from the site (not very often) I have an insane amount of trouble navigating the site and finding what I want. I mean there's no freaking "downloads" section that is split into testing and stable with links to the mirrors and such. I want to grab a multi-arch netinstall of both Lenny 5.0.5 and the latest, frozen Squeeze. I cannot find either. In other words, I'd have to burn six CDs instead of two. Not happening. Can somebody point me to the images that I am seeking?

Im trying to install Fedora 10 on to my HP Pavilion a340a (full product specifications: [url] ), i boot from the cd and it says "Automatic boot in 10 seconds..." etc, i get past that screen and am then at a screen with 2 shades of blue and a white bar moving at the bottem of the screen towards the words "Fedora 10", on the next screen, the log on screen, all the text is jumbled up and distorted, and everything appears frozen, except that i can move the mouse. I am not sure what the problem is but i know its not the cd because after having problems with hp pc i decided to try it on my Acer Extensa 2300 laptop (1.5ghz, 1.2gb ram, 40gb hdd, 32mb intel integrated graphics) and that installed fine, without a problem. This has led me to beleive that Fedora may not be liking the intel graphics on my HP Pavilion, and i dont know why. i really want to use Fedora 10 on my desktop. I should mention that i want to dual boot Windows XP and Fedora 10 on Pavilion, windows is already installed.

As the title said, my compiz effects are sometimes blinking, like when i rotate my cool cube it suddendly for some miliseconds it becomes transparent or something like that, and looks very ugly and very annoying, cuz it's very quick and looks so not smooth and clean. I've upgraded from 10.04 to 10.10 . I didn't had any problems like this. I also use emerald.

I've ditched ubuntu for xubuntu 11.04. I love it. The marvellous grid based desktop...the beautiful theme...the ease of customisation...everything. I switched because I didn't like unity. However, I now have a problem. After installing the proprietary ati drivers for my raedon 5xxx card, compz still does not work at all. A lot of other people have been having problems with extreme lag when dragging windows (my unity-likeing school friend included). I don't have this problem because compiz won't work. The weird thing is that in any other 3d tasks the card performs better than on 10.10. For example I can now play oblivion without the characters lacking faces.

As said here: [URl] I want the sphere deformation, but that needs the PPA apparently (I can't find it anywhere in the default compiz Ubuntu 10.10 ships with.) Compiz starts, but it says it can't load plugin 'decoration.'
Code:
Backend : ini
Integration : true
Profile : default
Adding plugins
Initializing core options...done
Initializing move options...done
Initializing resize options...done
Initializing place options...done

So after I upgraded to 10.10 some of my compiz plugins stopped working. Atlantis and anaglyph give me an error like this when I enable them in CCSM (I ran compiz from a terminal to see the output):
Code:
compiz (atlantis) - Error: InitObject failed
compiz (core) - Error: Couldn't activate plugin 'atlantis'

Compiz stopped working entirely recently and I've been trying to reinstall different version, nothing helped. Now when I look at synaptics, the version of the different package (compiz, ccsm, bcop...) are of different version (from 8.2 to 8.6). It tried reinstalling only from synaptics and it didn't change anything. I'm not sure that'll fix my problem, but for sure it doesn't help. Does anybody know what repos i should use to get a clear installation?

I just upgraded and hated the left side vertical menu, it's just not my thing.I decided (regrettably) to deselect the Unity plug-in from with the Compiz Settings UI thinking it might get rid of it. It but, but unfortunately it rendered the desktop completely unusable and alll I have now is literally a desktop with no menu's or toolbars of any kind.Although I can login using the 'Classic' option I really think I should fix what I have broken (before reverting to 10.10).Is there any way to re-enable the Unity plugin via command line?I tried entering ccsm via terminal but nothing happens. I also tried entering configcompiz-settings-manager but again, a dead end.

I have a rather odd problem. Ubuntu 11.04 came installed with the nvidia 173 drivers, which I replaced with the current ones. Neither loaded Unity, so I downloaded Nvidia's 270.41.06 drivers from their website. Still no unity.
If I run compiz --replace, however, compiz works fine, and Unity loads, albeit extremely buggy, most likely because all of the gnome components are still running (e.g., if I click anywhere on the top panel, it goes away).

During a routine update of my desktop (ubuntu 10.04), the update is hanging at "unpacking replacement compiz-gnome". I was wondering if it is safe to kill the update, and, if not, what else I could do. This has been hanging there for about 2hrs now, so its not just taking its time.

Compiz is utterly unusable, ever since probably about 9.04 or 9.10, when Ubuntu took out the Catalyst drivers for my laptop w/ Mobility Radeon HD 2300 their less capable open-source variants, which crashes after about 15 minutes of use.
The screen gradually becomes less responsive for about 5 seconds, until it just completely freezes and becomes completely unresponsive to any keyboard or mouse commands. I tried using the RadeonHD drivers instead and the problem is still there. The 'Hardware Drivers' app in System > Administration doesn't seem to do detect any fglrx drivers for my system.
How would I get some working fglrx drivers back?
And I don't want to use Metacity anymore.

I upgrade to 10.10 via online upgrade yesterday morning. All seems to run fine, and before the yesterday afternoon upgrade, compiz appears disabled and each time I try to enable it I get the error message.I checked the direct rendering is working. Google Earth works fine also, so all seems to be OK.
My system: Eee PC 1201n, Nvidia Ion, 4 Gb Ram, 320Gb HD
Ubuntu Maverick updated.
