I have problem installing ubuntu as everytime go through the installation process and it stops at 95%. I have tried DVD or CD version and i checked MD5 checksum of the ISO image.
View 3 RepliesI tried to install Ubuntu netbook remix Lucid on a Lenovo IdeaPad netbook with an Intel Atom processor and a SSD HD 4 GB and a SATA HDD of 160 GB. The installation starts normally, but stops on step 3 of 7, where I choose my keyboard layer...it never passes on to step 4 of 7. I must mention that I had a corrupted installation of Windows XP running on it...I made an USB bootable disk, and everything goes fine untill step 3 of 7.
View 3 Replies View RelatedI am attempting to install Maverick on an older pc. It has (2) mirrored 153 GB SATA drives. I set aside 33GB for a linux partition, by shrinking the partition in Vista.
Choosing to "Install along side windows" is not an available option. I can only choose use who disk, or use empty area. I choose use the empty area, and the Ubiquity installer gets hung up when attempting to format the empty space as EXT4. When I scroll up on the output I notice some error messages referencing NTFS. When I use Gparted it shows a possible problem.

I try to use Ubuntu Software Center, Synaptic or apt-get to install a package, it seems to give an error(okay, USC stops the install and Synaptic crashes), apt-get gives the traceback

Greetings from Greece. I tried to install opensuse 11.3 in an empty disk . Unfortunately the installation progress stops in 88% and the message error says "error copy live image to the disk". I have burn two different cd but the result is always the same.Is it a hardware problem or the cd is not correct?I had the 11.2 version in the same pc without any problem for a long time.

View 6 Replies View RelatedA friend of mine has asked me to install Ubuntu for a long time. Today I set up his partitions with Lucid LiveCD and GParted.
However, the LiveCd throws an error that makes me hesitant to continue.
If I boot a LiveCD on my computer I get a question meaning "run Live or install?"
This question does not appear on my friends computer. The first thing you see (about 2 min after boot) is an alertpanel saying something like "The installer encountered an unrecoverable error. We will now set up a desktop environment so you can investigate the problem." After that the normal Lucid (Live) desktop appears and functions well, as far as I can understand.
Sorry for not being able to give more data about my friends system. It is a stationary computer about 2 yrs old, running XP. I can't really make investigations on his system either. I had hoped to go there next time and just install Lucid.
Maybe one should try the alternate installer, but my friend just got used to the LiveCD and I would therefore like to use the LiveCD.
I don't understand why it seems to start installation by itself.
Most of all. I wonder if it is a good idea to run the installation from the desktop icon? Maybe it will encounter the same error that the LiveCd seems to encounter at startup?
I used to have a dual boot with Windows Vista, 32bit & Ubuntun 10.04, 32 bit, and it worked well. I recently installed Windows 7, 64bit in my PC, and tried to installed ubuntu 10.10, but for some reason Window 7 stops the ubuntu 10.10 installation. Can it possibly be a compatibility issue?

My mouse suddenly stop working, or the cursor changes from pointer type to a line cursor and basicaly the mouse just stops clicking. I am plannning to install fedora 13 on this machine. Have downloaded the 5 iso (
CD images).
Would choosing the option upgrade on existing Linux partition do the job? Is there a chance I loose my data files when the upgrade is done? I dont want to reinstall programs like java, eclipse, tomcat etc that I done in fedora 12. I only intend using the CD's as I dont have a lot of bandwidth and a fast internet connection to use yum.
I tried to upgrade from karmic, the process went fine then after the last reboot, it stops on a black screen. I downloaded an iso to install from a disk, the disk runs a bit then a black screen.

The blocks are arranged in a 17 by 30 pattern and have two different colors. This happens with 3 different versions of Fedora 13. The 32 bit live CD version, the 32 bit version and the 64 bit version. I am able to start a live CD version of Fedora 10 but not the live CD version of Fedora 13 on this computer. The computer has an Asus P6X58D Premium mother board, an Intel i7-950 CPU and an EVGA GeForce GT 240 display.

For installation purpose, I mounted a cdrom drive, keyboard and monitor.
On my attempt to do the installation, I get the following sequence:

I have tried the procedure from the physical console as well as from remote (using Putty on a windows machine) in a SSH window.I also tried to install from an iso file on disk in stead of the cdrom. All with the same result.
I had a few system problems, and decided installing Linux might offer a good tool for fixing them up, plus I've been meaning to kick the tires on the latest version. Anyways, after a bit of futzing with disks, windows and linux install disks and the bios, the problems seem to have fixed themselves, and I've got a partition with Linux on my boot drive.
Now, as soon as I successfully booted to the grub menu I booted into windows and used EasyBCD to set up the dual boot as per [URL]. Then I tried booting into Ubuntu (Version 10.10), and after one or two screens flashed by too fast for me to really make them out, it halted on a black screen with white text. At the top was the line: Grub4dos q.4.55 2010=07=25, mem 636k/3326m/4864m end:34c6cb There was a boxed paragraph explaining minimal "Bash like" editing was supported, then below was Grub> And of course because I modified the boot before booting from the origional loader, I don't actually know if this is a problem with the install or something messed up by EasyBCD.
Boot from DVD 11.4 586 32 bit is fine. Loads up and offers me install, boot from HD, check media, firmware etc. Select text output, no acpi, check media. Linux kernel loads, then black screen showing progress in white text.
At "Starting udev..." process hangs. Eventually (several minutes later) message is returned about "worker" not able to read from "sr0" which I believe is the DVD drive which it has been using to this point.
I'm running 11.3 normally, udev is not a problem on boot from HD. The DVD media works fine on a Windows laptop showing "Starting udev... ok" and continues. Media checks ok on this machine.
I'm thinking that no matter what medium I use to install from, HD, DVD, net etc this udev problem is going to hit me again unless there is a hint I can pass to the bootup process.
After reading about other experiences with this issue I removed all the non-standard hardware and no difference. The DVD drive seems to be the issue. Bootup is already using it, and yet udev cannot find it.

View 3 Replies View RelatedBefore I upgraded, I used Ubuntu 9.04 on my Playstation 3. It worked absolutely fine. A couple of days back, I decided to upgrade to ubuntu 9.10 using the update manager. The installation process seemed to go fine, until I booted up the new version. When I booted up, my mouse cursor wouldn't move, whilst my keyboard worked fine, I unplugged and plugged it back in and swapped USB ports, but it came to no use. I reinstalled Jaunty and tried the entire installation process again. After installing the new version again, the same problem occured, my mouse just wouldn't work.
When I type in the command 'uname -a' it comes up with something (I apologize, I am a Linux noob) to do with the 2.6.24 Linux kernel, Ubuntu 9.10 is on the 2.6.31 kernel. Is this the problem? I don't understand what is going on or what the solution is. My mouse is a HP optical mouse if that helps. I can't bring up the terminal window because my mouse just doesn't work, which is really annoying me.
I have problem with software update. As update is available Update manager pop ups and I start "install updates", every time update run and stop at java updates. The screen shot attached.

My problem is that my keyboard stops working after making my initial selection of installer language and install option. As soon as I select install, I receive a message stating that IRQ 14 has been disabled. Next, I am faced with a screen asking me to select my installation language using the tab, space, and enter keys. But to no avail, my keyboard no longer works. No arrows, no tab, no space, no enter, he num lock key will not toggle it's respective LED.
I should note that I'm using a PS/2 mouse (there are no USB ports on this server). I've also tried multiple PS/2 keyboards, and all act the same. I've looked in my BIOS settings, and the only option I see is for enabling/disabling the on-board PS/2 keyboard. I have not tried disabling that, because I have a funny feeling I would lock myself out of the server for good. I also tried non-graphical mode (at least I think that's what I did). I held in the shift key while booting the CD, and selected no to using graphics. At the "boot:" prompt, I just hit enter.
Due to the problem with the upgrade killing xp partitions, I reformatted my drives and am trying to install 10.04. However, after choosing install ubuntu or try ubuntu without changes, my monitor stops getting input from my computer. If I click the try ubuntu, I hear the start up noise on my speakers, but I see nothing.

When I first uninstalled it (about a month ago) I have the Ubuntu at reboot but when I run it says something about a file etc etc...
First time worked but the internet connection didn't work.
I'm running Ubuntu 10.10 Maverick Meerkat 64-bit on my desktop with a wired internet connection (with no firewall). For the past 2 days, I have observed that1. Firefox randomly throws up errors like "Problem loading page" whenever I click on a hyperlink. When I click on Reload, the page loads up just fine. This has been happening a lot recently..and I do not remember updating anything consciously. By the way, ipv6 is disabled in Firefox.2. The network stops working all of a sudden (usually indicated by the Firefox error). The Autho Eth0 indication is active, but I am unable to connect to any external machine.
3. Needless to say, this error is manifesting itself in apt-get as well. I get "something wicked happened" errors all the time, and am unable to download or install anything.That this is not a problem with the ISP is obvious because I also have Windows (from which I'm typing this, ironically), which is able to access the internet.Is this a bug in Ubuntu 10.10?
Last night I upgraded the kernel to 2.6.34.4-0.1-desktop and now X has stopped working. I can go into run level 3 OK.
I have tried removing the xorg.conf file, using a copy of the install xorg.conf. I have also tried reinstalling the ati drivers

I am sure the hardware is OK as I have my system dual boot with 11.2 and 11.3.
I installed Windows XP and then Ubuntu on the remaining disk. However, each time I go back to windows, windows decides to destroy grub and it stops loading, then I have to use a rescue disk and do a grub-install again. It's annoying to have to do this everytime I go to windows. Is there a way to avoid windows to destroy grub? Or install grub on a place windows cannot touch?

We are running Ubuntu on VMWare EXS Server 3i (32 bit server). We tried upgrading from Version 9.4 to 9.10. The server will not boot. It throws networking errors then just comes to a blank black screen.

I'm attempting to set up my "Tablet PF1209" pen tablet in Ubuntu 10.04. There should be 4 spaces before Tablet but this forum removes them. I've followed several of the HOW TOs and the best two I've found were: [URL]
Everything works the way it should except once I 'click' with my pen. After I press down to select something or paint, I can't get the hover feature to return. Well it returns if I unplug and plug it back in. It's kinda hard to use a pen tablet when you can only move the cursor when painting/dragging.
I've never had this issue the last time I used my tablet (Ubuntu 7.04)

I'm trying to install v10.10 on my Sony Vaio VGN-NS150J, 4gb ram, 2gb core 2 duo, 320 gb HD...to no avail. The live CD boots, but the dvd drive stops spinning after i click the install button...the one that says i can't turn back. Nothing seems affected by quitting the install. I have no idea what to do except to not turn back to VistaOS. I intensely dislike that "operating system".

Nothing happend so i ctrl-c it and the packet manger shows me no other errors or something else, even all the packages who was marked for upgrade are now upgraded but what about that python message? Do i have to do some check ? or maybe even a repair or even worse re install the OS?

After the GRUB prompt, my boot process does not advance to the login GUI. It kicks me out to the console view of the boot process and ends with a text prompt for logging in.
I get the following message just before the "Welcome to OpenSUSE 11.1" line:

what's happening and how can I retrieve the login GUI?
