Ubuntu Installation :: Cannot Drop To Console In 10.04

May 1, 2010

After 10.04 upgrade I cannot drop to console, as well as the gnome UI takes overly long to load, letting me stare at my background for 10 seconds before arriving.Let me start off by saying my machine would not even boot when using the nouveau driver. After successfully installing the normal nvidia driver I was then able to get to my desktop.I cannot view any of the console's that are not using X(F1 F2 etc) None of these work, previously I received invalid input on the nouveau driver but now when i drop to console I am met with a black screen and no display until I return to the one using X.

I suspect it is using an impossible resolution with the consoles but I cannot figure out how to fix it. grub seems to be ignored for display resolution.I am using a TV/monitor that is 1360x768 @ 60hz

Ubuntu Installation :: Unable To Drop Into Virtual Console

Jul 29, 2010

I'm currently having trouble getting a desktop to run Ubuntu.Booting up the Ubuntu Live disk delivers the error (There was an unresolvable error.Dropping you into a live environment). After the Live CD boots I'm able to partition/install from within Gnome.I proceeded to install 10.04 and update the system. After updating everything and the kernel I lose the ability to boot the system as it will totally freeze just as it auto-logs in.I'm unable to drop into a virtual console.

I tried the alternative CD thinking it would help and every install/test option besides MemTest86+ displays the crypic: Floppy Unknown Error(233)I don't use a floppy and this error doesn't show up anywhere, but in a dapper bug report. The bios is configured correctly. The HD (I've tried two) and memory are in good condition.

Software :: Desktop / Terminal Emulator And Drop Down Console

Jun 22, 2009

I want to leave KDE (too bloated, got less than 300-400 megs free mem of 4G, mostly consumed by kde&friends) and I need some lightweight replacements for:

1. Desktop: lightweight, highly configurable, with utilities out of the box for: window switching (i.e. fluxbox doesn't have it and it makes me nuts), run command (usually alt+f2, I'm very used to it), virtual desktops.

2. Terminal Emulator: konsole is a very comfortable tool, highly customizable and I like it very much, but again it's very resource expensive. What do I need: no cursor blinking (gnome developers, why do you think it's comfortable? it's killing people), multitab,
utf support, shortcuts customization.

3. And probably a drop-down console like yakuake or tilda (both are consuming too much resources). Requirements are the same as for terminal emulator.

I've spent a week trying to find something fitting this requirements and found nothing.

What I've tried:
Desktops:
fluxbox, openbox, blackbox and other *box:
Major:
1. No window switching dialog
2. Awful run dialog (had to hack it so it reports at least something)
3. No window highlights in tray
4. Lots of problems with window focus minor:
- some awkward position dialog on window movement
- hardly customizable - need to change configs. (yes, I want this to be done via mouse and configuration dialog because it is easier and faster)

icecwm:
Major:
1. looks like a time traveler from 80's
2. problems with window switching
3. no run dialog (had to make it work with grun)
Minor:
1. hardly customizable

Terminal emulators:
lxterminal - mostly ok:
1. awful blinking cursor
2. I've got ctrl-shift mapped to language switching and I'm very used to it.

Tried to hack it: cursor - np, key bindings - bunch of problems, I don't know why, but GDK_CONTROL_MASK | GDK_MOD1_MASK doesn't work = tried to find some widget for setting accelerator keys - no luck.

eterm - very nice:
1. no multitabbing that sux...
mrxvt - the best, but doesn't have a utf support

A bunch of other libvte-based terminals with the same bugs:
1. No configuration options (that stupid cursor blinking and keybindings are hardcoded)

Drop down:
1. tilda - too heavy, no key bindings customization
2. yakuake - the best, but too heavy
3. yeahconsole - didn't even start with screams: 10 XError request

Ubuntu Installation :: No Drag And Drop Across X-Screens Since Karmic

Mar 6, 2010

For the time being a "feature" included in Karmic prevents me from upgrading to it since it's release. It is impossible to drag and drop (URLs) across separate X-Screens.My setup is as follows (see also xorg. conf attached):: 2 GPUs with 3 Monitors attached (which excludes Xinerama and the like) Every Monitor has a separate X-Screen Whenever I try to drag an URL (e.g. a file form nautilus) from screen #1 to screen #2 this is what happens when crossing the border: The Cursor appears on the left side of both of the Screens. On screen #1 the URL (the files Symbol) stays attached to it, on screen #2 it is simply the blank cursor. Dropping the URL drops it onto screen #1, so the one I'm coming from.

Ubuntu Installation :: Boot Fails: Can't Find Root Device + Drop To Shell

Dec 27, 2010

From one day to the other my system stopped booting properly. Since I (finally) fixed it, I wanted to share my solution. It runs on a fakeraid pair of SSD's of 60 GB each (actually a single Revodrive device, but it shows up as two devices). When Ubuntu 10.10 boots, I'm dropped to a shell.During boot, when I removed "silent splash" from the kernel's command line, I got these messages:

Code:

[ 4.960240] scsi 6:0:0:0: Direct-Access ATA OCZ-REVODRIVE 1.20 PQ: 0 ANSI: 5
[ 4.960425] sd 6:0:0:0: [sdg] 117231408 512-byte logical blocks: (60.0 GB/55.8 GiB)

[cod]....

I doubt that this is what was needed (as I had that already when it didn't work, but I might be required in addition to installing dmraid)

# update-initramfs -a

After installing this, the problem was solved!! This is strange since I don't recall uninstalling this package or changing anything important, for that matter (perhaps did apt-get upgrade, but that's about it!). [URL]

Though I could do all things without any obstruction.I deselected all the plugins & launched it again- this time it worked clean. I have resinstalled gedit & gmate packages but still with plugins on , I get dirty console screen.

Ubuntu Installation :: Natty Alpha 1 Console Text Corruption?

Jan 17, 2011

fixing a text corruption issue / advice for filing a bug report (if necessary). So, generally speaking the stability I am experiencing with Natty is as I expect; I'm fully aware that this is a very very early development release and so all sorts of things can go wrong. I just wanted to point that out So while Gnome/Unity are up and running, graphics run more or less perfectly, the boot process text is completely garbled and if after everything is fully loaded I hit Control+Alt+F1-F6 the text looks like:

* this
* the above image close-up

The above links are supposed to be of the ubuntu login prompt. The problem occurred after running the upgrade command:

Code:

sudo do-release-upgrade -d

As is standard upgrade procedure. Is there anything obvious going on that I can tweak to make it all happy again? Since I have a working GUI.

Fedora Installation :: How To Set Console (Tty1) Screen Resolution

Jul 29, 2010

After install of FC13, my command prompt console and tty virtual consoles are a small box in the upper left corner of the screen. It contains tiny 80 characters by 25 rows. I want to fill the screen the old way. I assume the problem is high value screen resolution set automatically to match my display; with fonts based on the smaller pixels. This is NOT X-Windows. I can set that resolution but it has no effect on tty consoles.

It is NOT grub, which I can set with kernel parameter vga=0 to do exactly what I want. Messages from grub are big letters but change to tiny ones at init ("press 'I' for interactive startup" and the beginning of the boot log). This is not an issue with the same display using FC10 and no vga= parameter. Is there a reason that the kernel parameter failed after grub? Can I specify console resolution?

Ubuntu Installation :: NVidia 8600GT - Start In (Tty1) Login Console Mode

Dec 17, 2010

I tried most methods suggested on many sites to install drivers
## through the additional driver panel only
## through the Nvidia.run file I downloaded
## through the terminal using apt-get

All failed to start ubuntu gui it takes me to the console login and I noticed it says "saned disabled" edit /etc/..something. This problem made me install ubuntu again three times and every time I activate the driver then install the driver Nvidia.run or through apt-get and both leads to a black screen tty1 login. So what to do now I installed and removed many things and I won't reinstall ubuntu again. Also I typed compiz and this came on:

root@ubuntu:/home/sherbieny# compiz
Xlib: extension "GLX" missing on display ":1.0".
compiz (core) - Fatal: Root visual is not a GL visual
compiz (core) - Error: Failed to manage screen: 0
compiz (core) - Fatal: No manageable screens found on display :1.0
Launching fallback window manager. I want to install properly so that I can start normally and enable the extra visual effects and the custom effects. Please elaborate the steps clearly

New Info:
When I enter nvidia-settings : server X opens and says
You do not appear to be using the NVIDIA X driver. Please edit your X configuration file (just run 'nvidia-xconfig' as root), and restart the X server. When I enter nvidia-xconfig as root and restart nothing happens and when I enter:
nvidia-detector it says none
and when I enter: nvidia-smi

A new and very exciting error everyone now also the windows 7 that I have besides linux has also crashed and cannot open the login window. I don't know whats happening all I know is that few hours ago I logged in to windows normally now I cannot login to either one of them and the funny part is: I'm working on my thesis on this computer and I cannot work anymore and I'm supposed to meet with the professor on monday.

Debian Installation :: Manually Booting From GRUB Console Into Crypt -> LVM -> Root

Feb 21, 2015

I'm trying to manually boot (from the GRUB console) into a system set up as follows: crypt partition -> LVM -> root LV, and I'm having some trouble figuring out how to do this from the GRUB console.

I have successfully manually booted a system which is set up as just LVM -> VG -> root LV. All I have to do is load the LVM module. In GRUB, that partition shows up as (hd0,gpt5). Once I load the GRUB LVM module, I can see the logical volume within the LVM as well. (My volume group name is "caesar", and the single logical volume is named "root".)

Code: Select allgrub> ls
... (hd0,gpt5) ...
grub> insmod lvm
grub> ls
... (lvm/caesar-root) ...

It's fairly simple to manually boot:

Code: Select allgrub> set root=(lvm/caesar-root)
grub> linux /vmlinuz root=/dev/mapper/caesar-root
grub> initrd /initrd.img
grub> boot

Where I am having difficulty is in trying to insert crypt before LVM. I can set up such a scheme, and put a minimal installation on it, without issues. It's booting into it upon reboot that I can't figure out. Once I load the GRUB crypto, cryptodisk and luks modules, I can mount the crypto partition:

Code: Select allgrub> ls
... (hd0,gpt5) ...
grub> insmod crypto
grub> insmod cryptodisk
grub> insmod luks
grub> cryptomount (hd0,gpt5)

Attempting to decrypt master key...
Enter passphrase for hd0,gpt5 (<long hex string here>): <type my password>
Slot 0 opened
grub> ls
... (crypto0) ...

At this point, GRUB sees the crypto partition as (crypto0). But the GRUB LVM module doesn't see "inside" of the crypto partition, so I don't see the root logical volume within the LVM listed; all I see is (crypto0).

Code: Select allgrub> insmod lvm
grub> ls
... (crypt0) ...

Setting it as root doesn't work:

Code: Select allgrub> set root=(crypto0)
grub> ls /
error: disk `crypto0' not found.

So, How do I get GRUB to "see" LVM inside the crypto partition?

Debian Installation :: Squeeze - Change Grub Password And Console Font Size?

Nov 5, 2010

I'm trying to do is protect the computer against housemates. The standard procedure I do with Lenny:

1. Password protect BIOS.

2. In BIOS, always boot from hard drive. Disable booting from any other device such as USB or CD-ROM.

3. Password protect Grub (v1) using the "password --md5 $1$9MuaA/$5TDLgvmcEiCWNr5W9VaMK1" syntax in my menu.lst file.

With the above precautions in place, [I think] the only way to gain root access to the system is to take the case lid off and proceed to do stuff physically (like set jumpers and/or take out the hard drive). Am I correct? My reasoning for this is, the computer boots -> must boot from HD -> must load Grub -> must go to default menu item since others are protected, and cannot command prompt in Grub without password.

Anyhow, In Squeeze, I was a bit disappointed to find out, after doing a bit of Google-research, that Grub v2 (which is standard on Squeeze now) does not easily support password protecting the Grub menu. Am I correct? Will this issue perhaps be addressed in the Squeeze final release? Is this feature dumb anyways because the Grub password is of no use (i.e. my paragraph above is complete horseradish)?

Another thing I would like to do is change the console font and size back to something more "normal" or "classic", not some crazy tiny font that's only found in totally bleeding edge Linux distrubutions <gasp!>. I found that the Squeeze console font (e.g. when I type Ctrl+Alt+F1) is wicked tiny. I wanna change it to "normal". Grub v2 password and console font config?
