Ubuntu Installation :: Can GRUB2 Work As Independent Bootmanager?

May 25, 2011

I assume that I have not understand grub2 correct and need help.In the past I have used grub legency in the following configuration.SDA6 = 2 GB partition ONLY for grub as bootmanager.I have sda1-sda3 and sda7 to sda9 as system partitions. As backup I used TAR to an nas system and this way I could restore any partition from the tar file to any partition on my harddisk. The only part which I did manual was edit FSTAB on the recovered partition and modified the grub menu.cfg.This way my bootmanager was independent from any operating system and partition (except sda6).When I replace the harddisk, a recovery of grub legency was easy and after I copied the backup files back to sda6, I could continue to to restore the tar files and my system was up and running again.

Now with grub2 each linux installation thinks it is the master of my harddisk and takes over control from my sda6. Yes it discovers other linux versions etc but I loose control over my bootmanager. How can I use grub2 with an independent bootpartition (sda6) and how can I configure this bootpartition (sda6) from each installed linux partition? With other words no FIXED linux partition is responsible for my bootmanager. for someone asked why I need more versions of linux the free vmware server 2 does not work on newer versions of linux. The latest vmplayer can not work with newer version of firefox. This is ONLY an example why I have more as one version of linux.

Ubuntu Installation :: Plop Bootmanager Pcmcia Usb Live Install ?

Jan 29, 2011

I run plop bootmanager - [url] to load live linux distros from the usb drive on the PCMCIA card. This is because grub2 doesn't yet support the pcmcia drivers and I wanted to make use of my old laptop.

I run the instruction on how one should install ubuntu on a usb stick from [url].

The process goes through when I see the live CD screen where it lets me try Ubuntu without installing. The splash screen comes up and all and remains there for sometime but after that it stops and then I get this error:

Its trying to search for my cdrom drive when it shouldn't as I have it on usb drive!

Debian Installation :: Super Grub2 Will Work After Vista Reinstall

Mar 16, 2011

I have a dual boot system. I need dual boot as my dictation software is only available for Windows. In the future I am going to try a virtual machine, but dictation and audio did not work properly the last time I tried in VM. But unfortunately for now I have a dual boot machine with Vista and Debian 6. Unfortunately, I am going to have to reinstall Vista. Or to be more accurate I'm going to install the 64-bit version instead of the 32 bit that came with the computer. I have the 64-bit version that I no longer use from one of my other computers.

Anyway, I have to install Windows which will overwrite my grub2. Is there anyway I can make a backup or reinstall grub2 after I install Windows. I really don't want to reinstall Debian 6 squeeze. Can they make some sort of a backup of gurb2 before I do this. I checked out the Internet and I found something called Super Grub2. It apparently will allow me to boot back into Debain 6 so that I can install grub2 again. Assuming, Super Grub2 even works then how do I reinstall grub2 once a boot into Debian 6? Has anybody tried Super grub2, does it work? It's kind of hard to test it, with a working version of grub2.

Fedora Installation :: 12 Windows Bootmanager - "BTMNGR Is Missing - Press Ctrl-Alt-Delete To Restart"

Feb 12, 2010

Though I kinda do wish that I could just fully migrate to Fedora (or Linux in general), I still do need Vista for some things (like, until I can get this mess with my tablet and speakers sorted out). However, when I tried to boot into Vista this morning (by selecting "other" in GRUB) it said "BTMNGR is missing. Press Ctrl-Alt-Delete to restart."

Will I have to use the Vista Home Premium installation disc to fix this? Surely, telling it to automatically fix startup problems would work, right? I'll try later today PS This problem could also be related to my other 'yum update' problems. All of my problems started when I performed a whole kernel update, so that could also be why I can't boot into vista.

Fedora :: Lost Windows 7 Bootmanager After Install It

Jan 4, 2010

Lost Windows 7 Bootmanager after Fedora. Need to Boot Windows 7 but am at a loss of where to begin. I simply want to use a Boot Manager (BM), any BM to boot either Win7 or Fedora at will. I can now only boot Fedora. I have read for 2 days and nothing is very straightforward or clear as to the problem and how to recover Win7. Everyone seems to be talking around the problem as if its a trade secret. I am not the enemy. I will try to write a simple straight forward post to assist others who wind up in this dilemma. Below is, both, a copy of my dirve's layout and my current Grub configuration.

Fedora 12 boots fine. Windows7 is NOT in the GRUB menu.
fdisk -lu shows:
# fdisk -lu
Disk /dev/sda: 160.0 GB, 160041885696 bytes

Ubuntu Multimedia :: HOW TO MPD With PulseAudio Independent On X

Feb 7, 2010

This tutorial is meant for Ubuntu 9.10 Karmic Koala, but it might work in earlier or later versions as well. I wrote this tutorial mostly because it took me a full day of work using lots of help from people on #mpd and #pulseaudio from the FreeNode IRC server. The goal is to get the MPD daemon working using PulseAudio, but without it being dependent on the X server or a session. To do that we must configure PulseAudio to run in system-wide daemon mode (which is not recommended by the developers, but in this case we do not have a choice). This means it will be using the /etc/pulse/system.pa config file instead of the usual /etc/pulse/default.pa. We must also make sure the appropriate user/group permissions are set, or PulseAudio will be rejecting the connections. The result will be an interrupt-less music environment, not dependent on the X server. Meaning we can for example log out and log in without the music having to stop for even a second. Switching TTYs (Ctrl+Alt+Fx) will also keep the music playing (not possible by default). All that and PulseAudio will still be able to detect and configure all your devices automatically.

Instructions: Make sure you add your username to the following system groups: pulse, pulse-access and audio.Do that by going to System --> Administration --> Users and Groups.Click the unlock button (the one with a picture of some keys), then click Manage Groups. In the list of groups that pops up, for each of the previously mentioned groups click "Properties" and select all the users that you want to have this functionality.

Ubuntu :: Couldn't Use Grub2 Console Prompt To Log Back - Can't Get Anything To Work Correctly

Feb 1, 2011

Is this a beta version or something? I installed this version because it came as a live cd coupled with emc2 for cnc machining. I cannot get anything to work correctly. I tried to install Mozilla thunderbird using the application manager and it is very slow. It takes forever for the menus to open. or emails and is virtually unusable. I tried to use the startup manager and it killed my grub bootloader so I needed to reinstall. I couldnt successfully use the grub2 console prompt to log back into linux even though I ollwed several tutorials for this. I tried to install the flash player plugin and it kept telling me still to install it before I could watch flash videos even though I had installed it 3 or 4 times. I just tried to install evolution mail and it cannot log into my gmail account. I tried to install swift dove which is a faster version of thunderbird and it says it is starting but then never does. I am reasonably sure I should hang in there as I have heard Ubuntu is very good as an os.

Last night I did four consecutive reboots but the message is still there. I log i remote with NX / Gnome. Synpatic shows "0 to install/update 0 to remove".Is this normal? Does every single update need an independent reboot, so there is a queue to catch up with? Or is there some reboot flag that is not resetting properly after reboot?

I could split it into parts that do not require any user interaction, but then most of the functionality will be in the UI, not the backend.

Ubuntu Servers :: HOW TO Be In Two Places At Once A.k.a Ipredator Independent Of The Default Route

May 4, 2010

I have a home server running Lucid which basically runs our home lan, but I also wanted to be able to run transmission-daemon over an ipredator VPN connection completely independently of the ethernet port (as far as the application layer is concerned anyway). Most of the howtos for setting up VPN use the VPN as the default route, however I still wanted to run a webserver, dnsmasq etc, not to mention free bandwidth access to my ISP etc.

Thus, this howto. The ppp connection still tunnels through eth0, but as far everthing else is concerned my server has two independent network ports eth0 and ppp0 and applications use the default route via eth0 to our router unless explicitely directed down pppX. I assume that you already have transmission-daemon installed.

Debian Configuration :: Grub Config For Dual Boot (Identical But Independent)

Jan 3, 2016

I have a Jessie with grub2. I've bought ssd and copied root partition onto it. I've also installed grub on this disc. I would like to have dual boot:

- First option: old root booted from hdd
- second option: boot from copied ssd and use root from it.

So i would have two identical but independent configurations.

Both disc has different uids (changed after cloning).

I had a hope that i will change fstab to mount root partition from ssd, but it doesn't work. I need to change grub configuration, but how to add new position?

There is also problem that bios doesn't allow me to choose disc to boot from. So i would rather prefer to change grub configuration for dual boot from different disc.

Fedora :: Dual Booting - Grub2 To See F15 Or Be Installed Using Grub2?

Jul 11, 2011

I installed Fedora 15, which was my first real departure from Debian based Linux OSs. I absolutely love the new Gnome 3, and was able to configure F15 to work as I wanted it to. On rebooting I realized that there was no boot loader screen, that F15 just booted and didn't give me a choice as to which OS I wanted to use. Eventually I was able to configure grub to let me see the boot loader and added my old boot loader as a choice. This worked well, maybe not a perfect solution, but it worked. This weekend I installed LMDE (Linux Mint Debian Edition) to another HDD. LMDE uses grub2 and after the install F15 was not recognized.

Two questions: Is there a way for grub2 to see F15? or Can F15 be installed using grub2? I really don't mind re-installing from scratch.

Ubuntu Installation :: Grub2 Won't See The Xp

Jun 9, 2010

I have decided to dual boot again because I found a old hard drive laying around.

primary drive: sata 500 gb
ubuntu 10.4 64 bit installed with
boot

[code]...

secondary drive: 120 gb ide drive with xp installed. xp was installed first and wrote the mbr to sda1. I then installed ubuntu 10.4 and it overwrote mbr on sda with grub2. I have tried every combination of the 40_custom script for xp I have found here on the forums but to no avail. The 30_OS probe never seems to see it either. Grub 2 will not see xp. I have it in the menu from the custom_40 but it just reboots the system when I choose it. Any advice is greatly appreciated as I am ready to go back to legacy grub which only took 5 minutes to dual boot last time I did dual boot. I want to give grub2 a chance, since it supposed to be better, but I am getting frustrated.

Here is the output from the boot info script.

Code:

Boot Info Script 0.55 dated February 15th, 2010

=> Grub 2 is installed in the MBR of /dev/sda and looks on the same drive in

Ubuntu Installation :: Karmic And GRUB2 ?

Jan 14, 2010

I posted this about 3 weeks ago in the 'Desktop' forum and with no replies feel this may be a better area

I've got Karmic installed on my netbook which I understand uses Grub2 which is still a BETA version.

I still seem to have the original GRUB (legacy) within the file system, still have a menu.lst file but is appears to be showing the contents of grub.cfg at boot time.

What is happening at boot time, is GRUB Legacy handing over to GRUB2 at boot or is the an option for GRUB2 to hand over to Grub Legacy.
