Ubuntu Installation :: Can't Run Printer Or Load Gramps Files
Sep 1, 2011
Installed Natty on a Windows machine via a dual boot. Two issues arising:
1 Brother HL-2040 printer just spits out all the paper without printing anything. I checked the printer application. It correctly identified the printer as HL-2040 but loaded the "recommended" HL-2060 driver. I noticed from my searches that others have had this problem but I don't understand whether (or how) they fixed it.
2 Loaded Gramps onto the "new" install (via Synaptic). Exported my Gramps file from another machine onto an external drive and tried to import the file to the new install. Tried opening Gramps to see if it would attempt to import the file, but there didn't seem to be a selection to recover the backup nor did it seem to be visible to the program. Also tried selecting the backup file and "Open with Gramps" - didn't work either. Also unloaded and reloaded Gramps via Synaptic but no change.

I've bought a HP Photosmart printer, HP Photosmart wireless e-All-in-One printer - B110a and i've got a problem installing it properly. I'm using Debian 6.0 Squeeze. When i connect the printer, Debian doesn't recognize my printer as the Photosmart B109 printer for unknown reason. When i go to the site of HP and search for a driver, it directs me to this site:I've downloaded that latest hplip file as a .run file and installed it. My printer is recognized proparly, but when i try to print a colored image, it comes out black/white. Something is not crrect. Does anyone recognize this problem with this type HP printer?

I'm not sure if this is the right place for this question but I can't find anywhere to contact the Gramps developers outside of bug reporting.
I found that the path to my images was not recognised by Gramps when I restored the backup after reinstallation. I had not changed the actual path where my images are stored.
I was able to fix the above problem by running Media Manager to change the path name as recorded by Gramps. However, when I try to add new images to Gallery, I get this error message: "Cannot import /home/alan/Pictures/<filename> The filename supplied could not be found."
This is even though the file was selected in the normal way when adding a new image to the Gallery. It happens every time so I now am unable to add new photos.
Does anyone know what a "relative path" is? It's possible I have got this part mixed up. I presume an absolute path is /home/alan/Pictures/ . Why am I now unable to add new images to the Gallery?

Set up my own web server hosted at home that I can use a genealogy program such as GRAMPS or PHPGedView with so that family members and I can store, view and upload information online viewable only to other family members.I have a old Dell server from work to use as a server (I know specs are helpful but don't have them at the moment.)I know that there are web hosting sites that this can be accomplished with easier and cheap but I mostly want to use this as an opportunity to learn.I am extremely new to Linux but the love the power it offers as well as it's philosophy. So far I've installed Ubuntu 10.04 Server on the machine.
I installed Apache, MySql, PHP and various other things with it.I got all the way through but have some errors with ISPconfig set up and some when I reboot. My main question at this point is, is this the best approach for what I want to do? And then once it's set up where do I go to learn how to use my system.

I have a Samsung ML-1430 laser printer connected to my Fedora 12 box. I downloaded the appropriate Linux driver tar file from the Samsung website. After extracting the tar file into a directory called image, the following took place:
This generates a "Linux Printer Package Setup" pop-up screen.
The following error messages occur after I process the pop-up screen which specifies a default install path [/usr/local/linuxprinter] and asks me to check an "Install CUPS 1.1" box and a "Begin Install" box.

I have a HP Officejct Pro 8000 Printer hooked to UBUNTU 9.10 on a system 76 box. The printer is not loading paper properly. I see references to this issue on various websites and I saw at least one reference to new drivers but alas they were all for windows. I checked the repository and I have the latest and greatest HPLIP. Does this mean I have all of the latest drivers?

I'm setting up a netbook for somebody (in another country!) and one of the last hurdles is the printer setup. I only have the netbook and not the printer with me. I know that the printer is a HP PSC 1215 All-In-One Printer but there seems to be a Catch-22 that I need to have the printer connected in order to be able to set this up using the GUI tools. How do I work around this? As a minimum I just want to enable printing, although scanning would be a bonus.

I'm trying to install Ubuntu (9.10) on my sisters computer. I have installed ubuntu 9.10, but when I try to boot it from hard drive, it would stop loading a bit after the logo appears. The screen would turn off while the system is still running. Live version of Ubuntu works after reports of errors. I tried to search for the problem all over the forum, and could not find a good lead to figure out the problem.
So far to figure out the problem, I verified if cd is corrupted. No issues there. Googled the problem, and seems like other users were able to install 7.04 (old posts).
Its so weird though that live version works and the installed version does not.
Here are my specs:
I can post logs, but I'm not sure which one is useful as I'm relatively new to this process.

I had Fedora 7 and Windows Vista dual booting on my computer. I just installed Fedora 10. When the live CD asked me where to install it, I chose "Remove all Linux Partitions and create default layout" The installation went perfectly, but now when reboot my computer, it boots directly into Fedora; GRUB does not load to ask me which OS I want to load. I know I did not overwrite Vista because I can still view my Vista files through Fedora. Here is my grub.conf file:
[Code]...
What do I need to do to make GRUB load again upon booting?

Looks like this has gone walkabout. It used to be in the Education repo and still is but is missing several updates. This repo has also gone missing from wiki pages and from list of community repos in YAST. Seems a bit suspicious as though something has been changed again. Is GRAMPS now in a different repo or is it no longer supported in openSUSE? Is Education repo defunct?

This is my first attempt with Yum and Fedora for that matter. I need to load a print driver and network driver for an MX860 printer. I downloaded the drivers and they are in the download folder. When I try to install I get what is below. How do I resolve? Do I need to identify where the driver is? If so, how?
[compaq@compaq ~]$ su -c'yum install cnijfilter-mx860series-3.10-1-i386-rpm.tar.gz'

No package cnijfilter-mx860series-3.10-1-i386-rpm.tar.gz available.

I cannot print pdf files. I click print in evince everything seems ok but nothing comes out on the printer. I receive no error. I have a HP printer (LasterJet 3005n) attached over a network. I am running 9.10 on a Dell Optiplex. I did not have this problem in 9.04. I had this problem immediately after I did a fresh install of 9.10. I can print open office documents without any problem, just not pdfs. I have the same problem with my serval laptop (also running 9.10).

Since my windows HDD died, I have been permanently on ubuntu but i never got my printer set up. Its a friday night and now ive got some time on my hands! Ive found the drivers for my printer (Cannon MP 210) but i have no idea what to do with the files. The file for the scanner is a .tgz file, and the printer driver is a .tar file. When i connected my printer a few minutes ago, ubuntu 10.10 brought me to the installation and i installed and older printers driver (mp 180) but the scanner wont work and a bit of excess ink is on the test paper.

I can't print pdf files from the Ubuntu PDF viweer on my printer - I get a message that 'pdftorasterfailed'. My workaround is to print to file then print the postscript file. Annoying but it works. I did some searching and this is a known bug in cups for Ubuntu 10.04. The first thing I tried was a system update, that did update cups but it still fails. I found this link:

and have the patch files, but how do I apply them?

opening a location that is a PDF file does not result in the file being loaded in Mozilla. Nor does it result in a dialog popup asking to save or open the file. I have the Adobe Reader plugin (Adobe Reader 9.3) enabled. On Lucid I get a blank white (sometime black) page. Using Karmic Koala, everything is fine; I get a dialog asking to save or open.
Here are a few example sites where loading does not work right:

It is possible that the last one is only be accessible from a domain with online access such as a University.

On my laptop I have a dual boot of Vista and Ubuntu (Karmic Koala). I have 3 Vista partitions and 1 Ubuntu partition (well, two if you include the swap disk).
Recently I had started to notice that when trying to boot into Ubuntu, it simply wouldn't. It would have a screen with lots of text which would every few seconds refresh yet it never really looked any different, although I'd be unable to tell. I'd leave it there for several minutes and nothing would happen.
I wasn't worried for a while because I only used Ubuntu for some scientific work over the summer and I haven't needed it for a while but now I desperately need those files. I've tried three programs that apparently make Linux partitions accessible in windows but I've been succesful with none of them. I'm now seriously worrying that there has been a harddrive error of sorts...but then I only have one physical harddrive on my laptop and my windows partitions are working okay.
I found my Karmic DVD and I tried to run "run Ubuntu without changing your system" but that wouldn't load after ages.
I haven't tried to reinstall Ubuntu because I've read that doing so would wipe the existing files.

I wonder if it's normal that when:-I copy files; -I move files;-I download data (files, video, etc.) from the Internetthe CPU is completely loaded at 100%. In comparison, on Windows XP (SP2), on the same computer, the same situation makes the CPU consumes only half of the processor, oscillating near of 50%.N.B. RAM is not affected by the above problem. My computer is equipped with:-CPU AMD Athlon XP 2400 + (2.0 GHz)-685 MB of RAM-Motherboard: SiS-741

I've been wanting to try editing programs on linux (like for my own personal mods), but I cannot find out how to load the source files into an IDE, I don't want to use Kate or gedit because it's time consuming looking at 50+ files trying to find where a piece of code would be at (say trying to find ColorDrawer.Tablet.MakeFile(thisfile,here);, and having to look for a file with the ColorDrawer class) back when I was on windows I used Visual Studio, and I liked how I could highlight the classes or actions and open the file that they were within. I've tried constant programs, MonoDevelop, QT Creator, CodeBlocks, etc, but I'm clueless as to how to actually get a source code to load into a solution. How would I go about getting say http://neverball.org/neverball-1.5.4.tar.gz into a solution for MonoDevelop (or any other IDE)?

I have just got my network to work on Fedora, and now I have run into an new problem... I can't access any shared files or printers. The computer that has the printer and the files I want to access runs windows XP Home edition, and when I boot into XP on my machine, I can access the files and printer. Can this be fixed, or is Fedora incompatable with Windows XP in this case?
