Ubuntu Installation :: Booting From Expanded Partition?

I have tried ubuntu 9.10 for 2 months, and I really liked it. So I decided to get rid of my Windows XP and expand my 10 GB linux partition to 146 GB. So I used GParted. I backed up the windows on some hard drive, and copied the 10 GB partition to the 146 GB partition (so I had the same data twice on my laptop). Here is a screenshot of my partitions
When I restarted, I booted normally to find myself in the 146 GB partition (which is great). The next time I booted normally to find my self back in the 10 GB partition. Every time I try to boot now I end up in the 10 GB partition. I'm a noob, but I guess it has to do with the configuration of GRUB to boot to one partition not another?

my ubuntu partition is not booting at all, GRUB loads fine but when select ubuntu, it is just a small white line (the terminal carrot thing).

I am running Ubuntu 10.04LTS (64bit) and the drives are formatted as EXT3. I have a Raid5 that had 4 x 1TB drives. It is mounted as my /home. I added a 5th Drive and used the Disk Utility to Expand the array. In the Disk Utility it shows as 4.0TB RAID5 Array, however when I open a console and type df -h it still only shows at 2.8TB (Which is the size of the 3TB array I had previously.) What do I have to do to have the 4TB array show up properly? I'm obviously missing something, but I'm not sure what it is.

I can't boot to Windows XP after recently installing Ubuntu (Ubuntu boots fine). The error that comes up (straight after selecting XP) is that it can't find "system32hall.dll".
Reason for the problem: Ubuntu is looking at the old, corrupted version of XP that I have. The 'real' version is on another partition, for reasons too lengthy to explain. Note: neither of these partitions were touched when installing Ubuntu - I placed Ubuntu in the pre-existing partitions I had setup when installing previous versions of Linux (last was Mandrake 8.)
Now, I can understand why it is looking at the old version, because it is on the first partition of the hard drive, "dev/sda1", the new version is on "dev/sda3" (nomenclature according to Ubuntu, obviously).
Question: How do I point the config file to sda3? I have tried setting root to "hd0,3" and "hd3,1" with no luck. Original code is below:

I installed 10.04 and Grub won't boot into Windows7. I attempted to fix the problem through several different methods and nothing worked and I fear I made the booting problem worse than it was to begin with. I can boot into Ubuntu just fine, just not Windows7. Black screen with a cursor upper left hand. Windows7 repair disk does not help and using Windows7 command line repairs did nothing.
So here is an idea I came up with: Is there any way I can back up the Windows partition exactly the way it is, reinstall Windows7, and then somehow lay down all that information directly over the install to make it exactly like it was?
I doubt it is that simple, but is that possible? Like basically unhiding all the hidden files, copying them into a folder on my Ubuntu installation, reinstalling Windows7 and just copying them all back?

I just pArtitioned my acer one netbook and installed fedora 12 to half my disk. Fedora is working just fine but when I try to boot I into 2 options. " completely restore system to factory defaults" and "restore operating system and retain user data". Should I do Any of these or should I reinstall windows?

I have upgraded my F8 installation to F10 installation recently. After this upgrade, I am able to access the windows partition, and add remove files in the same.Today, I tried booting into my windows partition and I was unable to boot into it. My laptop tried to boot into it, but crashed and came back to the grub selection screen...I did not have this issue previously, with other Linux installations..

I have a Dell VOSTRO laptop that I use for windows Vista. I have an old disk drive that I put into a USB case and now I want to use that for a Debian system. I do not want to install grub on my laptops HDD, if I do I need to have the USB HDD plugged in everytime I boot and i find that a real pain. I installed Debian on the USB drive with no problem and when it asked where I wanted to install GRUB I picked the USB drive ( I think ). Now when I interupt the boot and tell it to boot from the USB drive grub comes up with the correct menu but when I pick Debian I get the following messages:

I have booted from the .iso cd I made on my Mac last night and was tempted to install it on a 6gb partition that I have on my main HDD but was a bit scared to go past the fourth (or so) step in manual installing where I pick that partition and *do what?* Is it going to install the OS on that partition and leave everything else alone to give me a dual booting PowerMac? It doesn't quite say. I am fearful of screwing up my little ol' machine. Can anyone direct me to something that gives a step by step in manual installation on an already created (HFC+) partition to create a dual booting PowerMac?

I have a Lenovo thinkpad T400 with Vista x64 that I want to dual-boot with fedora 10. The T400's original config has 3 primary partions:
1) Vista boot partition (some weird partition that it only uses to boot... this is my first time using Vista so I don't know the details, but I think it has to be there and it has to be a separate partition from the "data" partition)
2) Vista data partition
3) Lenovo Rescue and Recovery partition (a separate bootable partition that is used for recovery, backups, ...)
My first attempt was to shrink the recovery partition and add a new extended partition that has the two standard fedora logical volumes and an extra NTFS to be shared between the OS's (I usually use FAT32 for this one, but NTFS support seems to be pretty solid now).
Everything was fine, but I couldn't boot into the rescue partition. According to this site:

You *have* to have a linux boot partition be your primary partition. Other people have told me the same thing and that site has an explanation, but I don't get it =)
So, it seems that I need 5 primaries (3 original vista/lenovo primaries, 1 linux primaray to put the boot stuff into, and 1 extended for everything else) to make this work (which is not possible). Can anyone think of something else I could do (other than getting rid of Vista and the Lenovo stuff and giving them both the finger?) I'm thinking maybe I could make an extended partition and move one or more of the Vista/Lenovo partitions in there, but I'm not sure if they could boot.

I'm trying to achieve my dream (but indeed not perfect) boot scenario: dual-boot OpenSUSE and Fedora with shared /boot, /home and SWAP partitions. First I installed OpenSUSE (sda3 on my layout below) with separate /boot (sda2), /home (sda5, encrypted) and SWAP (sda6), next I installed Fedora on /dev/sda1, and pointed it to mount sda2, sda5, sda6 with respective mount points, without formatting. I proceeded with the installation without installing new GRUB bootloader (overwriting an existing one).
It was successfull and now I'm back in OpenSuSE trying to edit menu.lst file (under /boot/grub) to make GRUB boot Fedora.
I attached a copy of menu.lst I cooked up for now. OK, it's a mess. Life would be allot easier if I didn't have a separate /boot partition, as I could just chainload, but it's no longer possible (or is it?). May be I needed to specify the resume device or problem is in initrd? below are the contents of /boot:

The problem is, on a machine, you can only have 4 primary partitions. sda1 and sda2 are my Vista and Recovery partitions respectively, which eliminates two of my primary partitions already. I myself have never used logical partitions, and was wondering if any of the partitions the Beginner's Guide recommends (/, swap, /var, and /home) could be made logical, and if I even need a swap partition.

I was dual booting Ubuntu with Vista.
Here is what I did:
1. Booted the Ubuntu CD at startup and opened the installer
2. Clicked forward on time, keyboard, etc. and came to PARTITION
3. Manually Partitioned Drives...
I made a EXT4 File System 50 GB for Ubuntu
And a 3 GB swap area for ram
(BUT in the process, my NTSF 250 GB Drive with Vista and my files was wiped)
4. I continued with setup and successfully installed Ubuntu
My boot menu at startup (GRUBS)
Now has:
Ubuntu
Ubuntu(recovery mode)
Memory Test
Another Memory Test
Microsoft Windows XP Embedded (on /dev/sda5)
The XP one gives me an error: The windows boot configuration data file does not contain a valid OS entry
Is there a way to get Vista and my files back? If not, how can I dual boot Ubuntu and get Windows Vista or Windows 7?

i decided to install ubuntu in my PC,i downloaded the .ISO image and i installed it in my USB. After trying it and all that i observed that i really liked it and i decided to formally install it to my computer in the hard drive. When i reached the partition thing,i selected to dual boot with Vista and select between each them in every startup,when i clicked FORWARD it gave me an error which i did not read(because,again im a noob) so i clicked cancel.
Today i wanted to go through the process again and now really install it,so again i went to the time zone part and i clicked forward but then,instead of taking me straight to the partition phase,it appeard a window saying "The installer has detected that the following disks have mounted partitions: /dev/sda ...." I clicked yes,to unmount this partitions so it took me to the partition thing,once there i selected the option to install Ubuntu with Vista and select between them i neach startup,then i clicked forward and went to the username/computer name process,once i finished i continued to the next part,the installation,but i selected to import all of my WIndows VIsta default user data,after that i clicked forward and went to the installation process,i went down stairs to eat soemthing while it finishes,i came back and it was finished,it asked me to reboot so i clicked in Restart Now.
When it tried to boot,appeared an error saying: Error: no such devide found: #################### Grub load(or something like that) grub rescue: and it was a command line,since there i havent been able to boot into vista or Ubuntu,im really scared because is the first thing related to OS installing ive done,so i booted my USB and ran the trial and right now im trying to find out what to do from that trial version.
I just went to the INSTALL UBUNTU 10.04 LTS application under the System>Administration Menu and found out that in the partition phase the Install and allow to select between both systems in eahc startup option,i dont know what to do,i foudn out that my HD has still all its data(MUsic/Videos/Folders/Programs/ect.)its just that i cannot boot from it. Also in GParted it appears as /dev/sda1/ and a warning icon besides it,also when i go into information, thers this warning there [URL]

I just moved mu Ubuntu install partition and am now having a bit of trouble booting from GRUB.
After selecting Ubuntu, I get a black commad-line kind of thing (I can type, but can't actually run commands) and then after a few seconds it carries on to the Ubuntu desktop...
It's not the hugest problem in the world but I'd like to fix it if I can... I've reinstalled grub and run update-grub but that didn't change it.
I assume it's something to do with GRUB, not recognising where the beginning of the partition is any more, is there some way that I can manually force it to use the new position? Or would the reinstall/update-grub have done that already?

About 2 years ago I installed Ubuntu on my desktop as a dual boot with Windows XP. I am able to run either OS but, when booting, I get:Warning: Unrecognized partition table for drive 80. Please rebuild it using a Microsoft-compatible FDISK toolThe Ubuntu boot up is always successful. I am currently running Ubuntu 8.04 Is this a normal result of the Ubuntu installation partitioning? I don't want to mess with the partition table unless I know what I'm doing and maybe that warning is a red herring.

After four attempts and diverse partition map problems, I finally managed to install successfully clean versions of both Mac OS X Snow Leopard and Ubuntu Lucid Lynx on my old MacBook Pro C2D (2,1) and a new 320 GB HDD, by following these instructions:[URL]
Now, I've got a big partition for Mac OS X (286 GB) and a small partition for Ubuntu (30 GB, as well as two smaller partitions for grub and swap). However, I'd like to shrink the Mac OS X partition to, say, 35 GB, and use the freed up 251 GB as a shared partition to keep files for access from both OSs. But Mac OS X Disk Utility won't let me resize the Mac OS X partition (and warns that it might not be a smart thing to do, as the disk has been partitioned for Boot Camp, etc).
Is there some way I can resize the partition, or do I have to start all over again?

When I start up the thing says "The symbol 'rtoul' not found. Aborting", then it ether boots from a CD, or beeps offensively at me.

I have a GRUB backup pen drive thing, but when I boot from it, it wont accept any keys other than CTRL+ALT+DEL. The partitions can be mounted and are usable, but home is encrypted. I don't want to delete my files.

I got an old Sony Vaio from a friend & wanted to keep a stripped down version of windows along side 10.04. During installation when I saw two Windows partitions. I saved the first one which was about 5 gig & deleted the other bigger partition & used ext4 on the free space for Ubuntu. I assume I only kept the recovery partition so basically I have sda1 (recovery partition)ntfs & the rest ext4. If I pick Windows from the grub menu at start-up the recovery starts but then shuts down with an error. I'm assuming its looking for the other ntfs partition to install & can't find it but I'm not sure what to do. I haven't done anything with Ubuntu yet so deleting & reinstalling is not a problem but if I do getting back to the restore menu probably will be. I don't have any disks that came with the computer either.

I have a system on which multiple operating systems are installed. Let's say:
C: Windows
D: Linux
I have a bootable USB drive, using which I can boot both into to Windows and Linux. I don't want to use this USB drive any more.
Is there any way I can create the same image as that of the USB drive on a new partition (e.g. E:), so that the system will then boot from that partition?
install Grub or some other popular multi-OS selectors; I have to boot from my own partition having the same image as the USB drive.

Around six months ago (last time I reinstalled Ubuntu 9.10), on a whim I decided to check that option to "encrypt [my] home directory". I wanted to see what it was like. Mistake. Since then, I've been unable to figure out how to access the data in my home directory using any method besides booting the computer (usb drive, rip-out-and-stick-it-in-an-enclosure, etc.). Specifically, I find that shell script sitting there that tells you to run it in order to see your files, but it gives some kind of error. I also still have the code Ubuntu tells you to write down in order to decrypt your files.
Fast forward to this past week. I brought in the laptop to Best Buy for repairs to the hinge (the hinge! Ace Hardware could fix this problem! But I wanted to make full use of the service plan.), and I got a phone call a few days later, saying that it hit Best Buy's "No Lemon" policy. They were going to keep my computer and give me in-store credit toward a new one. Of course, I refused to pay ~$70 for them to back up my data for me; what could possibly happen to it when they were fixing a hardware problem?
Anyways, I pleaded with them for my hard drive back, and they said that they could ship the hard drive back to the store so I could get my data off of it. I'm planning on going in there with my external backup hard drive and an external enclosure and doing it myself at the counter (If they charge $70 to back up a Windows partition, how much more will they charge for an encrypted Linux one?). I don't want to embarrass myself by standing around and not being able to get into my own data.

boot partition was not being automounted after booting into Fedora 13, yet I was still installing updates, including kernel updates. What has ended up happening is I have old kernels (from removed/outdated packages) that still live in my boot partition, and the new kernels (from my updates) live on the root filesystem under the /boot directory. So when I reboot, grub only sees the old kernels.To demonstrate this, here are some lists.These are the contents of my actual boot partition (grub sees these):

I'm just using a plop boot cd...it does what I need, boot from hdc 2. or (hd2,1) I'm having an issue, because Im not sure how to change the mbr so when I boot the computer from the third hdd, it just works...where is the MBR, and how do I edit it, or better, is there a GUI interface I can use?

My cousin just deleted his Linux partition and another smaller partitio nand now Windows is not booting, no he does not have the recovery disc. When Windows tries to boot it goes to "GRUB" and says "partition not loaded". What are some GRUB commands? And is it possible to fix this without using the recovery CD?

I been trying all day to boot debian on a lvm partition on a raid1. I have found some howtos but they only show how to do it for one or the other not both at the same time. Using those howtos I think I have grub2 setup right the problem is my kernel. It has support for both LVM and Raid built-in. I setup the raid and lvm partitions while running that kernel. But when I use it to boot up the system on the lvm/raid it gives a kernel panic.
The OS is by itself on an old disk sda1. The raid1 is on two other disks sdb1 & sdc1. It is divided into 2 logical partition vg-root & vg-media. I just copied the OS onto vg-root. Then tolled grub to boot to it. The grub entry is like so..I tried setting root=(md0) but that didn't work either. I'm pretty sure the problem is with the kernel but I don't see why since it can it can see the raid and lvm partitions once it is booted up and both the raid & lvm options are built into the kernel so it should be able to see them at boot time.

I am trying to install kubuntu on my macbook. I am able to boot from the CD and install fine, but when I try to boot from the linux partition the cursor blinks for a while, then the screen goes blank.I have used the rEFIt partition utility, but when I try to reinstall the grub bootloader as described here: it says "sudo: grub: command not found"When it try "grub", it says:"The program 'grub' is not currently installed. You can install it by typing:sudo apt-get install grub"

New to Ubuntu and trying to ensure I can boot into Acronis Recovery Manager to be able to reimage Windows as and when appropriate. If I enable the Acronis Recovery Manager so that it overwrites the MBR then I run out of ROM I think which prevents it from loading. If I use the software CD that doesn't detect my sata drive. However, I made a rescue CD in Acronis and this does work but I'm only using my bootable CD drive temporarily in this system.I found this post (URL...) which seems to do what I would like and have managed to follow this to extract the files from my rescue CD into /boot/acronis. However this original post relates to Grub and as a newbie to Ubuntu I think I have Grub2. I can't figure out what the correct syntax is to make a new Grub Menu entry in /etc/grub.d/40_custom.
