Here's the problem: My notebook's right speaker makes an awful sound when playing music. I want to configure the sound so as to get MONO and balanced to the left when I use the built-in speakers, and STEREO w/o balance when and plug a jack, ie: earplugs.
View 1 RepliesI've got an Acer Aspire 5101 with Natty on it and everything works so far, but I can't start Muse. It says: "Muse failed to find a jack audio server". At the bottom it also says: "...if Jack was started check if it was started as the same user as Muse". This might be the issue. But how can I check this? BTW: Jackd has been installed and I am a Member of the Audio Group.
I am new to Ubuntu and don't know how to fix this. I got this Notebook for free, because my Brother wanted to dispose it as it didn't worked properly after he reinstalled xp. Only the dvd-drive is broken, the rest is in really good condition for such an old thing. After a lot of trial and error I could finally install Natty from USB.

View 1 Replies View RelatedI'm at the tail end of my upgrade from Lenny to Squeeze and I think this sound issue is the last one I have.
As usual I've tried hunting for some answers but it gets very confusing when people are using KDE or PulseAudio or Ubuntu or slightly different configuration to what I have.
My config:
Debian Squeeze 2.6.32
Alsa (just because I was using that in Lenny and it was working, no other reason)
Gnome
Rhythmbox
Skype
Skype is pretty good - it has the sound configuration built in, so I say ring the speakers and it does. I say talk to the headset and it does. Rhythmbox is my music player (again just because I was using it under Lenny) however it only wants to play through the headset. I can't seem to get it to play to the speakers attached to the rear port.
Summary of some settings (transposed manually)

Does anyone have any experience of forwarding audio from Ubuntu to Windows 7 x64 via JACK? I'm struggling to find any useful documentation. I've tried to accomplish the same using a Pulseaudio server, which is better documented but the windows binaries are years old and as far as I can tell can't be made to work without disabling IPv6. Any other ways to forward audio would also be welcome. Bandwidth isn't really an issue as it's VM to VM on the same machine.

Yesterday I searched for alternatives under Linux for Audition. And I found much. The screen shots says, that they look similar to Auditon. I downloaded them and installed them. But they doesn't work. One of them say they can't connect to Jack. Some of them say nothing, and so they don't record my line in/microphone input. After a few seconds I of search, I knew that all of these programs uses jack for Audio. I installed it, but the situation wasn't better. Then I found a wiki, and try that: first start jack, than start the program. So I do. But there i get a few error messages: At first I should copy to lines to the file lines.conf. I do it. Then I should be member of the audio group. I do that.

I have had no problems whatsoever with audio in ubuntu 10.10. Both input and output have worked great, but alas now there's a problem.
I recently installed ardour2 with jack (using apt-get) but for some reason, anytime I start ardour2 (which starts jack implicitly) all audio stops on the whole computer. That is my computer goes silent. As soon as I exit ardour2 audio resumes.
Also, although this will probably resolve itself when I resolve the other problem, when exporting a project to audio file from ardour2 it exports silence for the entire duration, even when ardour2 is exited and audio has resumed.
I'm no linux novice, so I'm not afraid of command line solutions (I prefer them actually) however I know nothing about jack or audio editing in linux whatsoever, so if you could be very specific about jack terminology that would be great.
I'm looking for configuring a Ubuntu box, we need to capture alsa output into ffmpeg with jack or OSS but not pulseaudio, as that tends to glitch badly. We have things working, but we are sort of hacking around in the dark, we play music, but as we aren't linux audio experts ourselves.

I can get audio through my microphone into ubuntu and can record into audacity without a problem, however, I do not know how to get JACK to recognize the audio from the microphone (through the normal mic jack)... any ideas how I may accomplish this so I don't need to do all kinds of file conversions and imports to set down a vocal track with the tracks I record (via USB) through JACK?
View 3 Replies View RelatedI upgraded to Ubuntu 9.10 recently to find that my computer will not play mp3 files in Rythmbox, Amarok, or Kaffeine media players. All of the FLAC files I have ripped from CDs work, but no mp3 files work. I have downloaded and installed the ubuntu restricted codecs from Synaptic as well as the codecs prompted by Rythmbox rebooted, and still no result.Like I said, the .FLACs play fine.On another note, no sound is being transmitted to my earbuds. The only sound will come from the laptop speakers.

I start with Rosegarden. Failed to connect to JACK audio server. Try my other applications, same problem.
Basically the JACK audio server just WILL NOT RUN (correctly). I can sudo it and press start, but still it wont "play with" the applications! Heres the error message from JACK (I also get related errors when I try to do ANYTHING involving music creation):

now half of the speakers plug is stuck in the back of my PC. cant get it out, because it's very deep. i decided to use the front jack for sound but it wont work.already tried alsa mixer and upgraded my kernel.i think the problem is that i need to somehow kill the jack in the back of PC because its still alive and sending signals to that half-dead jack
View 1 Replies View RelatedI recently installed Ubuntu 10.10. The audio did not work prior to updating the system & software so it wasn't the updates. I have Bose Companion 2 Series 2 (Multimedia Speaker System) plugged in. When I was on Windows (I installed Ubuntu on top of it) they worked just fine. My headset (Microsoft LifeChat) work just fine. It is not muted nor are they on low volume.
If Bose Companion 2 require a proprietary driver how would I go about finding an alternative? I checked their website and all the software requires Windows NT+. I have tried reloading ALSA. I have installed Ubuntu Restricted Extras.

i'm currently using ubuntu 10.04 with AsRock p55/pro motherboard (supports bluray audio). I've just hooked up my logitech x-530 5.1 surround sound speakers, but there's no sound. My headphones work fine via the front panel jack. I dont think i've forgotten to plug any cables/pins on the motherboard. I cant install the asrock bios either, because ubuntu can't open the files. I've tried rehooking everything, but nothing seems to work. Could it be that ive forgotten to attach some cables? or is it a program problem?

I know nothing of Linux, but am willing to learn. While I learn though, it would be nice to listen to a little Hall & Oates. I'm running JACK with everything set as I think it's supposed to be, except that 'Realtime' is unchecked.If I start JACK running with 'Realtime' checked, it tries to launch and fails, saying "JACK is running in realtime mode, but you are not allowed to use realtime scheduling. i've been looking around the forum and google, and i found a way to adjust the speaker and headphone volume manually in alsamixer. To adjust the headphone volume on alsamixer, i can raise or lower volume using the "Front" volume bar. To adjust the speaker volume, i raise or lower volume on the "Speaker" volume bar.
so, it's cool to know that i can do this manually, but i'm sure there's an option i can put in alsa-base.conf to automate this. i just can't seem to find that option...
anyway, i'm using Ubuntu 9.10 64-bit...and here's my alsa-base.conf file

Most of the BT stuff I see involves connecting a headset to the PC...I'm not seeing much for what I want to do. I have a motorola Droid, and it's pairing via bluetooth to my thinkpad just fine. I'm running Ubuntu 9.10 64bit.What I want to do is pair the PC to my phone and have the PC act as the headset, i.e., the audio from my phone comes out my PC speakers. Ultimately I'm trying to record audio from my phone, voicemails from Verizon that I'd like to save to audio files. A couple years ago I was able to do something like this with a Thinkpad in WinXP, and record audio using Audacity. I'm not seeing how to make the PC work as a headset.
View 4 Replies View RelatedI recently migrated back to Linux after a 2 year stint with Mac OS X. One feature I liked from the Mac side was that there were 2 audio modes in terms of volume and mute. For example, I can mute my laptop speakers (just press mute), plug in headphones, set volume, and watch a movie. If I accidentlaly unplug the headphones, sound wouldn't come out of the laptop speakers since they are muted.
Was wondering whether this is available in Ubuntu? I wouldn't want to bother the office or the people I'm flying on the plane with.
I used my bluetooth headset and now it won't let me use my built in speakers.

I have an onboard Realtek HD soundcard which I have 2 2.1 sound systems hooked into. The rear two speakers play audio simultaneously i.e running the terminal sound test "front left" and "front right" come out of both the rear speakers at the same time. I am running Ubuntu Natty Narwhal 11.04 with all of the latest updates. May be unrelated, but also there seems to be a very large amount of lag when playing system sounds. Takes a few seconds after the event has occurred for the associated sound to play.

View 3 Replies View RelatedThis is a Lenovo L512 laptop with Intel HD Audio (Realtek ALC269 / Intel G45 DEVIBX) which was recently upgraded to Squeeze. I've been having trouble using the headphones on this machine, as the speakers continued to play while the headphones were connected. I normally use KDE, and the available mixer only offers one channel. I thought I might be able to manually silence the speakers by using the command line tool alsamixer. Unfortunately, alsamixer has a channel for the headphones, but it doesn't do anything, only master volume is controllable. By luck I decided to play around with Gnome today and to my great surprise, System -> Preferences -> Sound offers complete control over all functions of the audio hardware. Does anyone know how I could get these features working under KDE?

View 10 Replies View RelatedNew eeePC 1015PEM netbook, 2GB RAM, 250GB HDD. Came with Win 7 Starter; I retained this and installed openSUSE 11.3 alongside. Everything works well in Win 7 Most things also work well in oS 11.3, but there is a knotty problem with audio from the built-in speakers. Headphones are OK, but the speakers don't work reliably. Others have reported this on similar machines, and a number of "fixes" have been proposed in a wide range of forums, but so far I haven't found any that work.
I've actually installed oS 11.3 twice. After the first install I had no speaker sound at all, but after a day or two fiddling around it started to work of its own accord for no reason I could point to. For unrelated reasons (a silly mistake by me in Win 7) I then had to re-install oS 11.3 from scratch. This time the speaker sound worked after install, but then it dropped out again a couple of days later. Headphone audio has remained OK throughout.
I'm aware of and have applied the acpi_osi=Linux kernel parameter to enable the Fn keys on the machine (including sound volume and mute/unmute), so it's not that. I've combed the forums and Google extensively for other suggestions, and have tried them - including installing alsamixergui. I've also installed a properly matched ALSA KMP which changed some of the alsamixer controls but didn't cure the problem. Since it all works very well in Win7 and works sometimes in oS 11.3, I conclude that the problem is not with hardware but is something in software.
I have onboard sound, and have a blue jack that can be used for input sound wise. You can plug a device in and then just play it through your speakers. This works for me in Windows 7, but I'm not sure how to get this to work in Ubuntu.
I went to my sound settings, but didn't see anything to make my input jack active. I'm just basically using my pc as a pass through to play through my pc speakers.
When I suspend my computer, everything resumes fine... but the sound. The sound actually still works for the internal speakers, but not anymore for any jack-plugged headset or speakers. If I reboot, it works again. I also see nothing in the logs (dmesg, /var/log/messages).
These two commands return the same thing before and after resuming:

As it was recommended a lot when I googled it, but it seems that the alsa bin/script is not available on debian. It tells me repeatedly to install alsa-base, which was already installed. The following commands have been run one after the other, in that order:
