I have upgraded an IBM T41 laptop from UNR 10.04 to 10.10 beta. Upgrade ran fine.
After rebooting, I see the splash screen, and eventually the screen goes white. It does this over a few transitions, most likely in the time between X starting and having the desktop loading (I have auto logon enabled).
Once it is all white, I can Ctrl-Alt-F1 to the terminal. Since then I have disabled auto login but same result. I have also removed Unity (I use UNR and the T41 doesn't have a 3d graphics card), and have the same white screen.
Only after removing xserver-xorg-video-radeon, can I get to the Ubuntu Desktop (in 16 colour glory).
The Thinkpad T41 has a Radeon Mobility 7500 in it, and ran fine in UNR 10.04 (which is also a different kernel).
There was no xorg.conf in use (although I have added one during testing and forced the radeon driver to load) and I reviewed xorg log but didn't see anything.

When I put my laptop, a Presario X1000 to sleep that uses Radeon Mobility M7 LW [Radeon Mobility 7500], when it comes back up, I get just black and white "nosie" on the screen.
Even after I do cntr+alt+F1 and then cntrl+alt+F7 it still doesn't appear to restore the regular screen.

I'd installed Puppy and was very happy with the performance on my laptop, but I decided to switch to Debian because of the ap-get feature. I decided to go with JWM instead of one of the default desktop environments, but now I'm having to configure everything manually, and I'm pretty lost. So far, I've got X and JWM installed (though no graphical login, and have to startx manually).
Priority one is to update the video driver and get the best performance possible. I have an ATI Mobility Radeon 7500. I know the fglrx driver doesn't work with this card, but I don't know which package to install. When I type "apt-get install radeon", it spits out "E: Couldn't find package radeon"

I have installed Debian 5.0.4 (lenny, kernel version 2.6.26-2-686) on an old Dell desktop box and can't seem to make the graphics card happy. Xorg is using up to 70% cpu causing KDE to be extremely sluggish.
After much googling I initally tried adding these options to the device section in xorg.cong, to no avail.
Option "AccelMethod" "EXA"
Option "MigrationHeuristic" "greedy"
I then discovered DRI was disabled because the Radeon driver was loading before agpgart.
I found this:
Quote:
But there was no modules.conf so I had to create a file in modprobe.d instead and it doesn't allow the use of pre-install so I had to change the syntax but agpgart DOES appear to get loaded now as my initial errors about it not loading before the radeon driver are no longer showing up in the logs.
HOWEVER, Xorg is Still killing my cpu and there is no improvement at all.
Now I get these errors instead.
Here is the output of lspci:
I'm pretty new to linux and don't know where to go from here to troubleshoot this problem. Any advice would be appreciated! Let me know if you need more logs or details.

So Ubuntu had been working great in Lucid, and when I upgraded to Maverick the support for my graphics card stopped. It has the proper driver ("ATI/AMD Proprietary FGLRX graphics driver") active and fglrx, fglrx-amdccle and fglrx-modaliases are all at 2:8.780-0ubuntu2. I also have the xorg radeon package installed. Yet, whenever I try to enable desktop effects (to get compiz to work) it says that Desktop effects could not be enabled.

First problem is that there does not seem to be any Catalyst Control Center available for this driver. Is there one anywhere for Linux for this driver? The graphics card appears to be constantly at 99% usage at all times when simply sitting at the desktop. Is there a way to bring this down to virtually no usage like it should be at?
The display area on my monitor does not extend to the edges. In Windows, I can simply scale it to 0% to overscan in order to completely fill the screen inside the Catalyst Control Center; in Linux, I have been unable to do so with a monitor. Is there any way to scale the display area to completely fill my screen?

I really don't know what's going on here. I had Ubuntu 10.10 working great, and noticed 11.04 came out. I had been waiting a while and, for some reason, I decided to start with a fresh install rather than an upgrade. So basically here's what I've done so far:
- Installed Ubuntu 11.04 amd64
- Installed Opera, and XSensors
(sensors-detect only detected my GPU and CPU, not mainboard this time. But I can live with that.)
- Activated the FGLRX driver, rebooted.
---
- Tried to launch Catalyst Control Center, received this error message:
[Initialization error]
There was a problem initializing CCC Linux edition. It could be caused by the following. No ATI graphics driver is installed, or the ATI driver is not functioning properly. Please install the ATI driver apropriate for you ATI hardware, or configure using aticonfig.

I just bought a new ASUS laptop with the Mobility Radeon HD 5470 card.It seems like there's no driver for it yet (the amd.com download wizard is a dead end because I only find the HD 4000 series).
Is there anything I can do to get support for this card? At least I'd like to be able to change resolution. Or do I simply have to wait for a new ATI driver?

Similar to the other threads, but a completely different card/manufacturer. The others were mostly Nvidia. I have a dial boot machine, HP PAvillion with Windows 7 and now openSUSE, 11.4.
One (of my many problems right now!) is the screen / monitor constantly blinks/flashes/blanks. About every 15-20 seconds, it will go black for about 1-2 seconds and then come right back.
I was using KDE the first go around, and have since re-installed and am now running Gnome. I switched to Mint in between and did not have this problem. Also, I do not appear to have this happen at the logon screen. I have also tried ubuntu and didn't have the problem. I have checked the screen saver settings, and power save options and have them set to off and a couple of hours respectively. I have also modified the xorg.conf.d file to hard code the monitor settings. (Dell 23"). The card is Dual DVI out, and I have it converting to VGA to the monitor.

I have a new system with an ati mobility radeon hd 5730 chip. As far as I know, there are new drivers in the works, but aside from some articles, I haven't found anything that specifically tells me how to get them installed/working (at least, so that it works for the 5000 series of radeon chips).Has anyone had any luck with this yet? I'm just at the stage of installing, so I don't really care if it involves a different distro, etc. I've tried Ubuntu 9.10 and 10.04-alpha2, as well as Fedora 12 (from the live CD) and so far no luck.At the moment, all I care about is getting the native 1600x800 working for my screen. I haven't a clue how do do that...it seems like I might be able to do this using xrandr, but I don't know how to create a mode properly.

I have a problem with the latest Fedora. Installed it cleanly on a machine with Gigabyte H55M-S2 with Intel Core i3. There seems to be no sound and I checked to see if anything is muted but is not. The manual says that the sound chip is ALC888B so this could be the first problem. Any ide how I can make it work? Here is a dump of some things on my system.

I have a Thinkpad T42 and am trying to get S-video working.
I have read [url] and similar which suggest some xrandr commands to use to turn load detection back on and set the display to PAL.
A signal is definitely reaching the TV, but so far however I only have some faint horizontal bands moving slowly up the TV screen.
Output from xrandr is:
Code:
Changing the display resolution via System->Preferences->Monitors so that both Laptop and TV screen are set to 800x600 and ticking 'Same image in all monitors' makes little difference. However I have since noticed (this may be coincidental) that the TV screen is showing a distorted dark black and white version of the laptop screen e.g. when shutting down the 'ubuntu' graphic can be made out. Normal text such as in this browser window is too distorted to show anything that can be made out on the TV screen.

For reasons I can't even begin to figure out, the number pad does NOT work.i can get the num lock light to come on, but pressing the keys there produces no love at all. Right before I installed F10, my F8 x64 had been working flawlessly for a VERY long time and I have been able to verify that the keypad still functions both with the M$ Windoze Vi$ta virus and a live Knoppix CD.Since this is the first time I have had this issue, I don't even know where to look to consider solving this.
I did try the System->Preferences->Hardware->Keyboard and all of the HP layouts listed there, but I still can't get anything more than the Num Lock light to come on and go out.

I replaced an ATI Radeon 9550 with a Radeon X1300/X1550, in hopes of better performance.
My System: P4@3GHz, 1.5Gb RAM, Fedora 12, kernel 2.6.32.10-90.fc12.
Faults: Screen refresh is extremely low. Glxgears outputs 25 FPS. Dragging windows around is sometimes really slow.
What I did so far, in hope of fixing it:
1. Installed 'system-config-display', for providing an xorg.conf
2. Did: yum --enablerepo=rawhide update mesa-dri-drivers-experimental mesa*, fixing this, but to no avail...
I cannot find any errors in the log...I don't know what to do...
I am posting my Xorg.conf, Xorg.0.log and Glxinfo through links to pastebin.com
POST UPDATE:
When running GlxGears, I get a bit of motion, and then the gears freeze for 1 second. And this goes on and on. But...if I move the mouse around, I get 1100FPS!
Now I messed a bit with xorg.conf and the "SWCursor" Option, but the above happens when this option is on "true". On "false" there is no 1100FPS, only the freezing loop...

I been searching for months on how to get the s-video to work on my pci VGA compatible controller: ATI Technologies Inc Radeon Mobility M7 LW [Radeon Mobility 7500] card. I found a site with instructions.
This is how I got it to work.
I install Debian 5.0 Lenny Desktop
added the Driver "radeon" to my /etc/X11/xorg.conf file
This work and I was able to use my tv as a monitor however when I try to play a video file from totem or vlc all I could get was audio with no video; These files work and played fine in the CRT monitor.

From looking at beaucoup posts, it appears I'm SOL trying to use the Linux drivers provided by AMD (See url.terminal command line "sh ./ati-driver-installer-9.2-x86.x86_64.run". Since I keep getting an error message saying the file can't be opened either as root or using sudo I guess there's no reason to continue.Anyway, I have my PC displaying on a CRT thru a s-video connection. The screen is overscanned, that is, part of both the left and right sides are not visible. That is why I wanted to load the Radeon drivers & Catalyst Control Center so I could shrink the screen width.Question: Should I keep trying to open the ATI file? SHould I install the Open Source ATI driver? Should I give up and try to find a nVidia AGP 8X card?

Ok, a bit of a backround. I am a recent Ubuntu user and made the switch to Fedora being utilized as a server. I am trying to move to a new MUD(text based D&D type game) codebaseI have gotten my code compiled and executed the startup script. The process shows in the ps ux list. As the game it set up it uses port 7500. As the script running I get a "Connection Refused" error when trying to telnet to port 7500. Upon using nmap, I show only my SSH port open (the only daemon I have installed currently) yet no port 7500 open.
I believe this to be an issue somewhere in Fedora as I've had no issue on Ubuntu with past MUD codebases.I have disabled the firewall within Fedora and still no luck. Please bare with me as I'm new to fedora's intricacies.Short Story for those that hate reading long winded posts: A port that should be open by acript known to work on other distro's doesn't seem to open the called port using Fedora

I rebooted my computer and it says that the driver is not found and it makes the OS run on low graphics mode. I'm pretty new at Linux and running Ubuntu 10.04 Lucid Lynx. I'd like to know either how I could make my thing use the default driver for my card (with which I was able to put the extra visual effects...) or how could I install the thing properly...
