Ubuntu :: Catalyst 11.1 And Radeon HD 6900 Series?
Jan 29, 2011
First problem is that there does not seem to be any Catalyst Control Center available for this driver. Is there one anywhere for Linux for this driver? The graphics card appears to be constantly at 99% usage at all times when simply sitting at the desktop. Is there a way to bring this down to virtually no usage like it should be at?
The display area on my monitor does not extend to the edges. In Windows, I can simply scale it to 0% to overscan in order to completely fill the screen inside the Catalyst Control Center; in Linux, I have been unable to do so with a monitor. Is there any way to scale the display area to completely fill my screen?

I really don't know what's going on here. I had Ubuntu 10.10 working great, and noticed 11.04 came out. I had been waiting a while and, for some reason, I decided to start with a fresh install rather than an upgrade. So basically here's what I've done so far:
- Installed Ubuntu 11.04 amd64
- Installed Opera, and XSensors
(sensors-detect only detected my GPU and CPU, not mainboard this time. But I can live with that.)
- Activated the FGLRX driver, rebooted.
---
- Tried to launch Catalyst Control Center, received this error message:
[Initialization error]
There was a problem initializing CCC Linux edition. It could be caused by the following. No ATI graphics driver is installed, or the ATI driver is not functioning properly. Please install the ATI driver apropriate for you ATI hardware, or configure using aticonfig.

So Ubuntu had been working great in Lucid, and when I upgraded to Maverick the support for my graphics card stopped. It has the proper driver ("ATI/AMD Proprietary FGLRX graphics driver") active and fglrx, fglrx-amdccle and fglrx-modaliases are all at 2:8.780-0ubuntu2. I also have the xorg radeon package installed. Yet, whenever I try to enable desktop effects (to get compiz to work) it says that Desktop effects could not be enabled.

I just bought a new ASUS laptop with the Mobility Radeon HD 5470 card.It seems like there's no driver for it yet (the amd.com download wizard is a dead end because I only find the HD 4000 series).
Is there anything I can do to get support for this card? At least I'd like to be able to change resolution. Or do I simply have to wait for a new ATI driver?

I'm trying to install the driver for my ATI Radeon X1600 Series video card. I got the driver from the ATI site. Heres the link: [URL]... I'm using 10.04 LTS. I have attached a screenshot of the message I get when I run the installer.

I haven't paid attention to this before (there are too many monitors around here). But I just noticed a display problem with fglrx on HD 2400 XT (iMac) : parts of pages get covered with gray or black while scrolling up and down in Firefox.
I did reboot that machine a couple times and switch the driver to reproduce the problem. It never occures with either radeon or radeonhd.

I realize that Canonical is not responsible for the Catalyst driver, but I can't seem to operate outside of the Ubuntu Classic (no effects) mode for 64 bit Natty, and I was curius if anyone else had encountered or resolved this.
When I upgraded from 10.10 (I was using the fglrx package), xorg would immediately crash. I was able to reach the gdm screen only using recovery mode. I uninstalled the fglrx package, and now I can boot into Ubuntu Classic (no effects) mode only (no other desktop will work) using the open-source driver at no greater than 1280x1024.
When I try to re-install the catalyst driver using aptitude or Administration->Additional Drivers, the installation fails:
(jockey.log: WARNING: modinfo for module fglrx failed: ERROR: modinfo: could not find module fglrx)
Similarly, package generation from the AMD page fails:
Installation complete.

Similar to the other threads, but a completely different card/manufacturer. The others were mostly Nvidia. I have a dial boot machine, HP PAvillion with Windows 7 and now openSUSE, 11.4.
One (of my many problems right now!) is the screen / monitor constantly blinks/flashes/blanks. About every 15-20 seconds, it will go black for about 1-2 seconds and then come right back.
I was using KDE the first go around, and have since re-installed and am now running Gnome. I switched to Mint in between and did not have this problem. Also, I do not appear to have this happen at the logon screen. I have also tried ubuntu and didn't have the problem. I have checked the screen saver settings, and power save options and have them set to off and a couple of hours respectively. I have also modified the xorg.conf.d file to hard code the monitor settings. (Dell 23"). The card is Dual DVI out, and I have it converting to VGA to the monitor.

I've set up this new PC, the graphic card I picked is the ATI R7 260X, pretty good card with lots of core processors, high clock and 2GB memory. I'm now currently using the 14.4 catalyst drive, it works actually alright, though, there are some mishaps with this driver:
First my hdmi screen had scale down, leaving black borders around, even though the catalyst control said the correct native resolution, this turned out to be a underscan that fglrx does and I've finally managed to fix it. Other caveat is that the screen simply won't suspend or turn off( via software), DPMS actually works, forcing it turns the screen blank for some seconds but something does not allow the screen to sleep.
Performance wise it seems pretty good though, everything is pretty smooth, being able to play games maxed out on resolution and ultra settings, though, I still haven't tested out that many games.
The open-source radeon on the other hand, well its open-source, fully xorg and linux compatible, which is a major plus point. It seem it has come a long way, supporting lot of features and providing better performance in some cases.
Before installing Catalyst I had issues with mesa and steam, steam would complain about not finding the 32bit libraries, this is however a steam runtime issue, maybe it could already be fixed.

I have a new system with an ati mobility radeon hd 5730 chip. As far as I know, there are new drivers in the works, but aside from some articles, I haven't found anything that specifically tells me how to get them installed/working (at least, so that it works for the 5000 series of radeon chips).Has anyone had any luck with this yet? I'm just at the stage of installing, so I don't really care if it involves a different distro, etc. I've tried Ubuntu 9.10 and 10.04-alpha2, as well as Fedora 12 (from the live CD) and so far no luck.At the moment, all I care about is getting the native 1600x800 working for my screen. I haven't a clue how do do that...it seems like I might be able to do this using xrandr, but I don't know how to create a mode properly.

I have a problem with the latest Fedora. Installed it cleanly on a machine with Gigabyte H55M-S2 with Intel Core i3. There seems to be no sound and I checked to see if anything is muted but is not. The manual says that the sound chip is ALC888B so this could be the first problem. Any ide how I can make it work? Here is a dump of some things on my system.

I have a RHEL5 box with dual-heads (X displays :0.0 and :0.1). I have the X11 vnc module loaded properly in xorg.conf and it's serving both displays out on port 5900 and 6900 respectively. I want to be able to "send" either screen to another machine running vncviewer -listen, but I can only manage to send the primary display.
I'm using, for example: vncconfig -connect remoteviewer:5500 to initiate the reverse connection, which (understandably) makes the primary display appear on the remote listening display. However, I would expect that vncconfig -display :0.1 -connect remoteviewer:5500 would send the secondary display, but that doesn't happen, I get the primary display again. I don't see a way to manually specify the local port to tell the remote viewer to connect to, am I missing something? How do I tell the remote listening viewer to connect to port 6900 instead of 5900?

I replaced an ATI Radeon 9550 with a Radeon X1300/X1550, in hopes of better performance.
My System: P4@3GHz, 1.5Gb RAM, Fedora 12, kernel 2.6.32.10-90.fc12.
Faults: Screen refresh is extremely low. Glxgears outputs 25 FPS. Dragging windows around is sometimes really slow.
What I did so far, in hope of fixing it:
1. Installed 'system-config-display', for providing an xorg.conf
2. Did: yum --enablerepo=rawhide update mesa-dri-drivers-experimental mesa*, fixing this, but to no avail...
I cannot find any errors in the log...I don't know what to do...
I am posting my Xorg.conf, Xorg.0.log and Glxinfo through links to pastebin.com
POST UPDATE:
When running GlxGears, I get a bit of motion, and then the gears freeze for 1 second. And this goes on and on. But...if I move the mouse around, I get 1100FPS!
Now I messed a bit with xorg.conf and the "SWCursor" Option, but the above happens when this option is on "true". On "false" there is no 1100FPS, only the freezing loop...

I been searching for months on how to get the s-video to work on my pci VGA compatible controller: ATI Technologies Inc Radeon Mobility M7 LW [Radeon Mobility 7500] card. I found a site with instructions.
This is how I got it to work.
I install Debian 5.0 Lenny Desktop
added the Driver "radeon" to my /etc/X11/xorg.conf file
This work and I was able to use my tv as a monitor however when I try to play a video file from totem or vlc all I could get was audio with no video; These files work and played fine in the CRT monitor.

I've been trying to install the ATI Catalyst_11.1 proprietary driver for the past two days unsuccessfully.I've been using the instructions in this pdf from AMD's website, but it really hasn't done me any good. Despite the fact that the installation wizard says the install completed, nothing changes once I reboot.I read somewhere that it was possible to install it via the "Hardware Drivers" utility. Is that true? If so, how can I go about doing that.At the moment I've got the "ATI fire gl" driver activated, but playing videos in fullscreen is painfully slow and I'm hoping AMD's proprietary driver can help.btw, My system can run pretty much any video (HD or not) in fullscreen under Windows 7. I want the same to be true under Ubuntu.System Specs:
Model: Acer Aspire T160
CPU: AMD Athlon 64 3800+ (Socket 939)
Mobo: FC51GM (Foxconn WinFast 6100K8MA-RS)

I recently used scalpel to recover .doc files. I only need to find just one file, but scalpel retrieved thousands and thousands of them, all titled after a sequence of numbers. If I could only search within them all for a single word I'd be able to identify the ones to check out vs. the duds immediately.

I have been looking at Open Office calc to work the next in a series if non-linear numbers, and calc does do a very good best fit and shows the equation. Just what I want. I now want to programme this into a C routine that I am writing so that the programme will both look-up what it can from a samples database, and extend them forward where it does not have enough samples. (I'm trying to understand some correlations). My thought at present is to take the Ooo calc formula and write it into my code. Before I do so, I wonder if anyone knows of any non-linear solver routines written in C that I could just plug in? I'm trying to do a best fit from only about 6 very accurate floats which graph like a curve.

The correct 96-series nVidia drivers for 10.10 weren't issued until several months after that release. Now they do not work for 11.04 and no one on the Ubuntu forums seems to know the correct information about work arounds, I stumbled onto the X.org drivers but I do not know if I have them installed correctly or not. I am getting 1280 x 1024 at supposedly 0 Hz but probably 60Hz. It is a good work around as OC is used mostly for text editing and e-mail.

I've been having issues with 3D using the ATI catalyst driver since I started using Slackware (since version 12.2). I've had a few different graphics problems and through trial and error I've discovered they all start with install the proprietary ATI driver. I installed the Gnome Slackbuild to try it out, and managed to get 3D (ie. compiz) working flawlessly there, but for some reason I cannot get KDE visual effects to do anything while using this driver (although they work fine with the open source radeonhd driver). Any thoughts as to why KDE and the ATI driver are being un-cooperative with each other?
Secondly, I created a initrd and changed to use the generic kernel instead of the huge kernel. It doesn't appear the the ATI driver loads properly with the generic kernel as the 3D doesn't work at all and the output of fglrx gives lots of weird error messages about how the driver hasn't loaded properly (or at all)? So where would I go to make sure the fglrx module is loaded by the kernel?

I dont understand how fixing sound can mess with the graphics but hey it isnt working and thats what matters.I have an installer for the ATI drivers downloaded from ati.amd.com. when I had a clean install of Ubuntu 9.10 and installed these drivers everything worked 100% without any problems. Running the installer now doesnt seem to work. The log in /usr/share/ati/fglrx-install.log reports:

I just bought a 32" Panasonic LCD (1080p) and have decided to use that as my main monitor. Unfortunately, when I hooked it up to my computer, I had under-scan with both Windows 7 x64 and Ubuntu Karmic x64 (using a Radeon HD 4870 1GB). In Windows, there was a simple slider in the Catalyst Control Center to fix the under-scan issue. Unfortunately, the same option wasn't available with the Linux counterpart. I searched online for some answers, but all the ones I found seemed outdated, or gave me errors.Using the Aticonfig help command, I figured out how to fix the under-scan in Linux.

I dual boot on separate HHDs. I have just done a fresh install with updates. I installed the restricted driver from the repositories, and I get an error message from ati catalyst (administration). Also I have "unsupported hardware" at the bottom of the screen.
Graphics card is a XFX ATI HD 5770 on this system, and I just sold 2 8800 GT's yesterday, and bought two more XFX HD 5770's for CF in my other system.
I didn't do a bad thing, 'cause I was really groovin' on Ubuntu, that I just installed at the beginning of the week.
