Ubuntu Installation :: SOL W/ATI Radeon 9550 & Ubu 10.04?
Sep 1, 2010
From looking at beaucoup posts, it appears I'm SOL trying to use the Linux drivers provided by AMD (See url.terminal command line "sh ./ati-driver-installer-9.2-x86.x86_64.run". Since I keep getting an error message saying the file can't be opened either as root or using sudo I guess there's no reason to continue.Anyway, I have my PC displaying on a CRT thru a s-video connection. The screen is overscanned, that is, part of both the left and right sides are not visible. That is why I wanted to load the Radeon drivers & Catalyst Control Center so I could shrink the screen width.Question: Should I keep trying to open the ATI file? SHould I install the Open Source ATI driver? Should I give up and try to find a nVidia AGP 8X card?
I replaced an ATI Radeon 9550 with a Radeon X1300/X1550, in hopes of better performance.
My System: P4@3GHz, 1.5Gb RAM, Fedora 12, kernel 2.6.32.10-90.fc12.
Faults: Screen refresh is extremely low. Glxgears outputs 25 FPS. Dragging windows around is sometimes really slow.
What I did so far, in hope of fixing it:
1. Installed 'system-config-display', for providing an xorg.conf 2. Did: yum --enablerepo=rawhide update mesa-dri-drivers-experimental mesa*, fixing this, but to no avail...
I cannot find any errors in the log...I don't know what to do...
I am posting my Xorg.conf, Xorg.0.log and Glxinfo through links to pastebin.com
POST UPDATE:
When running GlxGears, I get a bit of motion, and then the gears freeze for 1 second. And this goes on and on. But...if I move the mouse around, I get 1100FPS!
Now I messed a bit with xorg.conf and the "SWCursor" Option, but the above happens when this option is on "true". On "false" there is no 1100FPS, only the freezing loop...
I love Ubuntu so much but when my previous graphic card passed away a technicien installed on my desktop an Ati Radeon 9550, my question is what I have to do to watch smooth videos in streaming?
Im having some issues installing the ATI Radeon Drivers. The card is a Radeon 9550

i have a intermitant problem with my ATI radeo 9550 .fgl_glxgears work once on two .
When it don't work in the kernel log I find :

I am having the same problem, as soon as X tries to load my screen just goes blank. I have an ATI Radeon 9550. At first I tried switching between VGA and DVI as well but upon ruling that out, I switch to my on-board video card and that is working thus far, but I'm trying very hard to figure out a way to be able to switch back. Anyways I'll check back in later on if I have any new information I will post.
Using Ubuntu 9.10 I installed Ubuntu onto a second hard drive and everything seems to work fine except for the fact that I cannot install the driver (it says not supported or something) when I downloaded it from the website. I downloaded the driver made for Linux. The driver manager claims "no proprietary drivers." At the moment it shows to be using integrated graphics, but I need the full hardware graphics to play games. The open source alternate driver didn't work either.
I been searching for months on how to get the s-video to work on my pci VGA compatible controller: ATI Technologies Inc Radeon Mobility M7 LW [Radeon Mobility 7500] card. I found a site with instructions.
This is how I got it to work.
I install Debian 5.0 Lenny Desktop
added the Driver "radeon" to my /etc/X11/xorg.conf file
This work and I was able to use my tv as a monitor however when I try to play a video file from totem or vlc all I could get was audio with no video; These files work and played fine in the CRT monitor.
When I put my laptop, a Presario X1000 to sleep that uses Radeon Mobility M7 LW [Radeon Mobility 7500], when it comes back up, I get just black and white "nosie" on the screen.
Even after I do cntr+alt+F1 and then cntrl+alt+F7 it still doesn't appear to restore the regular screen.
I upgraded my HP Elitebook 6930p from 9.04 to 9.10. When X starts the display shows random lines. I can boot into "recover" mode from GRUB and get the command prompt. 9.04 worked fine so I'm pretty sure it's not the video card. The video card is ATI Radeon HD 3400.
So far everyone thats tried to help has mentioned modifying xorg.conf On this installation, there is no xorg.conf file. Anyone with video troubleshooting experience with ubuntu 9.10 ? I cannot even get 800x600 16 colors displayed correctly
I tried this: [URL] to install my Radeon HD 4670's graphical drivers but it actually didn't work. I rebooted my computer and it says that the driver is not found and it makes the OS run on low graphics mode. I'm pretty new at Linux and running Ubuntu 10.04 Lucid Lynx. I'd like to know either how I could make my thing use the default driver for my card (with which I was able to put the extra visual effects...) or how could I install the thing properly...
I've always had and used Ubuntu. When I installed and did not like the stability of a certain version, I just reformatted the partition and used LiveCD. OK, on a virgin SATA, 300-gig partition, I installed 10.04 and that took the ATI Radeon 3rd-party graphics driver. No problem. Then, the family wanted 2 languages on the machine. The German keyboard screwed me in terminal and I wiped out Home and all their data. I used Scalpel to image-carve 300-gig onto a 400-gig partition and tried to re-install Ubuntu 10.10.
The ATI's fglrx will not install, that's the error. That same file prevents upgrades of Ubuntu to current status.
is this thread current for my problem with 10.10? http://ubuntuforums.org/showthread.php?t=651566
Or, do I have that 400-gig with the backup cross-pollinating?
After upgrade to Lynx, all of my ATI drivers don't work. Whenever I try to run fglrxinfo I get " Segmentation fault " And for fgl_glxgears I get" Using GLX_SGIX_pbuffer Segmentation fault " For sudo aticonfig --initial -f " Uninitialised file found, configuring.
Using /etc/X11/xorg.conf Saved back-up to /etc/X11/xorg.conf.fglrx-11 " Compiz does not work at all either.
I can't get kde to start. I boot through the blue ubuntu 10.04 splash screen normally, so my video card is putting out something, but then i drop into a tty terminal. I log on ok, but when i do startkde from the command line i get a message saying can't connect to xserver, when i do startx, i get these errors: (i can't stuff them here cuz i don't have a mouse or a cut and paste ability)EE) NVIDIA:
Failed to load the NVIDIA kernel module. . . EE) No drivers available.
But here's the backstory: I have a ASUS M3N78 PRO MB with an on board Nvidia GeForce 8300 graphics capability. It was intermittently failing, so i disconnected it put in an ATI RADEON PowerColor HD 3450 graphics card, and then my problems started. Seems to me I must have the Nvidia driver since i can boot to KDE fine using the Nvidia onboard analog output (at least some of the time).
Supposedly Lucid Lynx has the ATI drivers for my card preinstalled, plus the new card does drive the splash screen. Is there some clash in some script between the Nvidia on the MB and my ATI Card? I upgraded to GRUB2, reconfigured xserver-xorg, tried to run jockey from the command line and failed, tried sudo nvidia-xconfig. Nothing changed anything.
I just finished building my new machine. I've got windows 7 running just fine on it, but I wanted to dual boot Ubuntu 10.04. I downloaded the 64 bit iso and tried installing it from both a live cd and a usb drive. When I boot from either (cd or usb), I see the Ubuntu loading/boot screen, but after the data is loaded, my display goes black and seems not to be able to find a signal. I assumed initially that it was probably due to the fact that I was connecting to my tv by HDMI cable. I guessed that Ubuntu did not have HDMI drivers for my video card, ATI Radeon HD 5750, by default. Then today, my new monitor arrived and I switched to the DVI output on my video card. I assumed that this would allow me to boot and install. I was wrong. I experienced the same symptoms on my monitor via DVI as I did on my TV via HDMI. why my monitor drops the signal as soon as it leaves the loading/boot screen?
I am new to Ubuntu for the most part, but have done a lot of research on this OS. I just freshly installed version 10.10 32 bit, and the first thing I did was follow this tutorial on installing the drivers for my HIS Radeon HD 6850. I really want to get this drivers working so I can use the 3D effects on this OS.
When I type fglrxinfo I receive:
X Error of failed request: BadRequest (invalid request code or no such operation) Major opcode of failed request: 136 (GLX) Minor opcode of failed request: 19 (X_GLXQueryServerString) Serial number of failed request: 14 Current serial number in output stream: 14 When I type aticonfig I get:
aticonfig: No supported adapters detected. The proprietary driver was never installed so I know that driver is not interfering. Originally the aticonfig was not found at all but with a little troubleshooting from the link above It seems to work, but obviously not recognize the card. The card works great on my windows 7 setup. If I can't get this working I may just remove Ubuntu all together, but any help would be amazing!
Card is the Radeon x300 and in the past in a wubi install I installed the propreitary ATI driver. I'd like to do that with this installation too. I've located the proper driver and tried to run in the terminal.
I get this error:
I've read were I have to uninstall the xorg drivers and make a .deb package but idk how to do that.
I've just installed 11.04 but can't have unity since it doesn't support ATI Radeon HD 5600 series along other ATI cards. Anyone who knows when ubuntu is planning to solve this problem?
I have now installed a radeon 9250l display board. I followed the Ubuntu Radeon documentation page. It tells me that 3d is supported. I am not sure that 3d is correct or running. I am running without a xorg.conf file and my current resolution os 1024x768 (which is fine). I get no errors on boot but want to make sure its correct. I also did:
[code]...
Since the documentation seems to apply to the previous version (mine is 10.04) that may be a problem.
I've got big problems with ubuntu 11.04 (32 Bit, on Lenovo T500 with ATI Mobility Radeon HD 3650)First of all i have to boot from the installation cd with the option "nomodeset".Also for the first boot from harddisk i have to set this option. After i have installed the proprietary ATI drivers i can boot with the default options but unity won't start....n dmesg i found following messages:Quote:

I downloaded the Fedora 11 KDE LiveCD'm having some troubles on installation/initialization of the system. The livecd boots fine, but when X is started, the notebook freezes. If I delete the option 'rhgb' in the boot options of the livecd, it stops in the middle of the boot process. I deleted the 'quiet' option, and saw the notebook hangs just after the load of the drm module. I tried too with the optionnomodeset' and the option 'nomodeset' without 'rhgb', but I can't get into X. But if I use 'xdriver=vesa' in the boot options, the system starts normally and X starts normally too. So I used xdriver=vesa, and installed fedora on my notebook. But when I boot the newly installed system, it goes to a kernel panic, after the load of the drm module... The installed system behaves as the livecd
I have an ATI Radeon 9000 Graphics card that Ubuntu 9.10 doesn't seem to recognize no matter what I do. Knowing that its an older card and that ATI stopped support for it a while ago, I was wondering if anyone knows if I would have better luck on Ubuntu 8.04. I can't get 3d or opengl to work, or install the correct ATI Driver.
I have upgraded an IBM T41 laptop from UNR 10.04 to 10.10 beta. Upgrade ran fine.
After rebooting, I see the splash screen, and eventually the screen goes white. It does this over a few transitions, most likely in the time between X starting and having the desktop loading (I have auto logon enabled).
Once it is all white, I can Ctrl-Alt-F1 to the terminal. Since then I have disabled auto login but same result. I have also removed Unity (I use UNR and the T41 doesn't have a 3d graphics card), and have the same white screen.
Only after removing xserver-xorg-video-radeon, can I get to the Ubuntu Desktop (in 16 colour glory).
The Thinkpad T41 has a Radeon Mobility 7500 in it, and ran fine in UNR 10.04 (which is also a different kernel).
There was no xorg.conf in use (although I have added one during testing and forced the radeon driver to load) and I reviewed xorg log but didn't see anything.
So Ubuntu had been working great in Lucid, and when I upgraded to Maverick the support for my graphics card stopped. It has the proper driver ("ATI/AMD Proprietary FGLRX graphics driver") active and fglrx, fglrx-amdccle and fglrx-modaliases are all at 2:8.780-0ubuntu2. I also have the xorg radeon package installed. Yet, whenever I try to enable desktop effects (to get compiz to work) it says that Desktop effects could not be enabled.
I just installed Kubuntu 10.10 , been using gnome Ubuntu for a few years. At the same time I bought a new video card , the VisionTech 5550HD. My Nvidia card seemed to conflict with my HVR1600 tuner , so I thought I would switch to ATI. With the FGRLX driver , there was an error in the xorg.log , so I thought I would just use the Radion Driver. It works , but glxinfo shows "OpenGL renderer string: Software Rasterizer". I assume this means no hardware acceleration. Is this normal. Graphics seem a bit choppy, I would like to get one driver or the other to perform well. By the way, I have a few problems with Kubuntu, but over all I am really liking it
