Fedora Installation :: F13 Install Freezes When Checking For Dependencies
Sep 1, 2010
Installing from a CD, and F13 constantly freezes at the same spot - "Checking dependencies in packages selected for installation" - gets stuck 1/3 to 1/2 thru.
Dell Dimension 2400, Celeron 2.4GHz, 768MB memory, 120GB drive.
I've used same CD set to install several other systems so CDs are good.

I am trying to install fc11 on an intel mb with pentium4 and ati graphics
the install always hangs at the point where the sw packages have been selected
and the install is checking dependencies.
I have tried the regular install
the basic video install, and text install
with the same symptoms each time
the dvd drive lite is on and the hard disk activity lite is on and the system is frozen.
have to power off.
I have fc11 installed on another system (amd) and had install issues also but that was
with the preview.

I tried installing F14 and F15 but display resulted in freezing. The display would work upto "Check Media/Skip Test" for media during installation and the system freezes immediately after that. So I did a VNC installation from another system. But the initiation of X would always result in hanging of the box. After googling and trying various solutions, I found a ray of hope in one solution which suggested adding "vesafb:mtrr, ywrap vga=0x318" to the kernel arguments. This resulted in displaying successfully the boot-time flash (Fedora logo being filled with white color) during booting. But "startx" or "inittab 5" result in hanging of the system.
The following is the relevant information:
I see 5 monitors and 5 cards!

I did normal net upgrade after the official release of 10.10 yesterday evening. On reboot I get a frozen system with a blank screen. Checking via safemode, I find it is stuck when 'checking battery state' but this is a desktop machine! Apt update, uninstalling ubuntu-desktop, reinstalling ubuntu-desktop, etc.

I'm looking to install, and perhaps create a SlackBuild) for an application that I think might be interesting.
The dependencies listed are:
libx11-dev, libxt-dev, libimlib2-dev, giblib-dev, and libxinerama-dev
I've checked to see if the packages are installed w/:
Code:
I've also looked for any existing SlackBuilds, but the only one that showed up in the database is: "giblib"
Where can I look to find these dependencies, their sources, or determine whether they're already installed in Slackware64 13.1?
Also, how would one determine if this can compile for a 64bit, non multi-lib install?

I've tried this a couple different ways and I can't get it to work. Whenever I try to install from my F10 DVD, I get to the part where it asks if I want English or some other language. After I pick English and click Next, everything goes black except for my mouse which is frozen.
Specs:
Primary boot drive is blank, secondary has Win7

I upgraded to 11.04 yesterday but when I try to run it now it freezes on checking battery state. I've did some looking in the forums and found this post. [URL] Which in turn pointed me to this page. [URL] I have an ATI Radeon 5450 so I went through the steps for Need to fully remove -fglrx and reinstall -ati from scratch
Now, when I try to start up the screen just goes blank as if I've turned the computer off. I can run the system in limited graphics mode (or whatever it's called) so I have the ability to do some troubleshooting there, but I'm a Windows convert and am pretty hazy as far as Ubuntu troubleshooting goes

I have just installed from the Live Cd (Fedora 13). So far so good except that I have just installed the updates (which has taken some time) .
The updater screen shows a full progress bar and next to the progress bar is this text " checking for libraries currently in use" this has been at least one hour showing the same thing, it hasn't changed (PC is still running OK). Does this mean I can safely quit and the updates will be OK or should I keep waiting for a reboot screen or updates success message ? Is this normal, if so how long does it usually take to complete?

I have Ktorrent installed via the repositories and its always worked perfectly. Today I ran software update with KPackageKit and it installed updates. It told me that KTorrent had to be removed to continue and without thinking I hit ok. Now my KTorrent is gone. When I try to install it on the terminal with
Code:
sudo apt-get install ktorrent
it gives me this error.
Code:
$ sudo apt-get install ktorrent
Reading package lists... Done

[code]...
The following packages have unmet dependencies:
ktorrent : Depends: ktorrent-data (= 4.0.3-0ubuntu1) but 4.0.5-3ubuntu1~maverick1~ppa1 is to be installed
E: Broken packages If I remove and reinstall ktorrent-data it doesn't help. build-dep doesn't help. autoremove and then trying to reinstall doesn't help. I'm not running some strange dev version of anything. I have a standard Kubuntu 10.10 amd64 installation and my KDE version is 4.6.2 from the regular repositories. I run updates (standard repositories) almost every day and have never seen anything like this before.

I've recently got this error coming up when I try to install things via yum through the terminal. It happens when I try to install *anything* at all. I'm running 32bit Fedora 14, although my laptop is 64 bit.
I think the error may have occurred a while back when trying to upgrade to fedora 15 running 64 bit, although I'm not sure exactly what I did then

I have tried running "rpm -Va --nofiles --nodigest" and I just get this error again.

Whenever I get to the dependancy check, it gets up to 99% and appears hung. I am in text, not GUI. Any idea why or if I just need to wait longer? I waited about 1/2 hour. Also, on newer versions, there seems to be no text install option. I saw in the stickies there is this option, and I was wondering how to get to it? I hit the function keys to get different menus while installing fedora 10 on my laptops but just can find a place to type text. I'm no guru, but I've been around the block and I'm just faster at the old text way. Old fart you might

Administering offline Linux boxes can be a serious pain. The Debian flavours now have keryx to make life easier. Keryx is a cross-platform application, which means one can get the dependencies from Windoze too. Is there any similar package for rpm/fedora based flavours? In the absense of a proper Offline manager, I was also wondering if there is a way to collect the output of:
Code:
yum deplist <package>
... condense or sieve out the double listings, and pipe that to a text file? One can copy the output and run
Code:
yum reinstall <paste them here> --downloadonly
and get all the required dependencies from the yum cache. If all that can be accommodated in one script... then that's pretty cool. I don't have the scripting know-how to dive into this.

How do most experienced Fedora users remove packages with large number of dependencies?
I know that the question is as old as yum, but still I can't find solution. There is package-cleanup tool, which supposed to do the job with "--leaves" key, but it doesn't seem to work. Right now I have F12 installed. I installed rosegarden with `yum install rosegarden`. Then I removed it with `yum remove rosegarden`. If I understand right, `package-cleanup --leaves` must show all of 12 dependencies that was installed with rosegarden, but it shows none of them (although it shows few packages). Is this a bug? For years I used Ubuntu and Debian and I was completely satisfied with apt.

I'm trying to get skype to work on my new system. It seems to install, but trying to run it I get an error message naming a missing dependency. Searching for this with yum whatprovides and installing the result worked in one case, but for the next one, yum install <package containing missing item> returns a few errors of the form:
package <name-version>.fc12.x86_64 (which is newer than <package-version>.fc12.i686) is already installed Is there any way around this? I'd like to get skype working, but am having no luck at the moment. I'd prefer not to remove the .x86_64 packages if I can avoid it in case that breaks something else.

The Fedora 12 (64 bit) install freezes right after the "probing EDD (edd=off) .... ok" comes up. I have to do a hard reboot to get the system back. I am currently running Fedora 8 (64bit) and everything works fine. The Fedora 11 (64 bit) install runs. (I don't really want Fedora 11, so I didn't complete the install).
The Fedora 12 (32 bit) install runs. (I don't really want 32bit Fedora, so ...). The Fedora 12 (64 bit) install only runs if I add mem=xxx. (I would like to be on this version)
I'll be doing the full install soon, but what should I look for once I have it installed to figure out what the issue is? Why do I now have to pass the memory size when 8 and 11 seems to be able to figure that out? I have a dell optiplex 740 with 4Gb of ram. AMD Athlon x2 64bit processor.

All goes well until suddenly the whole thing freezes, mouse as well. This has happened twice. The first time it stopped with 532 packages still to install. The second tim it had installed all packages, and the froze at
"Installing kernel module dependencies" 53 percent, and
"Save configuration" 90 percent.
Each time I was installing to a different, unused, hard disk.

Well, it's a weird problem.
I had an old desktop pc, and I downloaded and burned both Karmic and Lucid desktop and alternate ISOs. I installed the karmic alternate in that PC, and things went smoothly.
Now a friend of mine gave me his old Packard Bell Easynote R laptop. It has a centrino 1.6GHz mother, 1GB RAM and a 60GB disk. The GPU (Geforce Go 6200) overheats a lot, but I have lurked around and found out this is a common issue.
Well, so I installed Win XP, and recently I wanted to install xubuntu here as well.
Thing is, the desktop install freezes. It does nothing, I can't even use the Live CD.
The alternate install goes well until the proper install, and then starts complaining about missing files in the CD.
Two things: The CD is perfect, I just tried it on my other desptop PC and it goes well.
The laptop cd tray is well too, I install things all the time, and I tried to install a game after this happened, to try and see if it was this, but it appears to work just fine.
I don't know what could be causing this. And I don't know enough to change things at the install prompt (noacpi, thing like that, I don't know what they mean).
Has anyone experienced something like this? If so, is there a solution? I believe this laptop cannot boot from flash drive, in the boot menu I only have HD, CD-DVD, Floppy and LAN.
Another thing: If is a CD issue, is there a way to install this from LAN? (that is, using my other working PC to do this?)
