Ubuntu Installation :: 10.04 Install Interrupted - How To Complete
Jan 7, 2011
I was installing 10.04 as a dual boot with Win7, the install was interrupted and now I can't do anything with it. Booting, I get as far as '[0.541227] kernal_thread_helper' and it stops there with or without a disc. How do I complete the install or strip out something so that I can start again?
Looks like I waited too long to upgrade from 9.04 to 9.10. Now the Update Manager wants to take my system to 10.04, but then says it is 'not supported with this tool'.Do I need to do a complete re-install of the OS? Is there a reasonable way to get to 9.10 without a complete re-install?
Decided to upgrade my 8.04 server to 10.04 today. Everything went smooth when I tried to install in vmware. When I tried to install it on my real machine the installation hangs at 74% Storing Language...
I've checked the disk and I tried different ways to install (different language, both keyboard and system). The first two attempts the installer just turns off and the computer reboots. This third time it just hangs. how to debug and solve this problem?
It's the x86_64 version. I'm using the standard options all the time including LVM on whole disk.
When I visit packages.ubuntu site, I see dapper, maverick etc. What are these? Also I need to install complete gcc, g++ and dependencies. How to do it?
I just installed ubuntu 11.04 (64-bit) on my system. I mounted / on my SSD and /home on my HD. The installation proceeded for a while and then I suddenly got a message that the installer crashed. Nevertheless the installed linux seems to work and I can boot in Ubuntu. Not sure what exactly is wrong now that the install didn't complete. Any way for me to check what went wrong and what exactly I can do to make sure my system is ok? All appears ok but appearances can be deceiving.
I want to install fedora 14 completely to a USB drive, not the live USB but a complete installation. I am using linux after a long gap of 9 years and have forgotten most of the things.
When I boot into Debian 8, I pull up a terminal and as root enter "apt-get install xfce4"... It then tries to install but asks for the install DVD. When I insert the USB it will not install from it. It doesn't even acknowledge that it was inserted. It is only looking for a DVD drive. How can I make it pull the files from the usb installer stick?
I'm trying to install Ubuntu on an Aspire laptop with Windows XP. I downloaded 10.04 and burned an ISO image. I boot Windows and open the ISO disk. I open the first choice which is to try Ubuntu prior to a complete installation. The installation starts and proceeds for a few minutes. Then it stops and displays a message 'Permission Denied' and a suggestion to check the installation log. The last few lines are:
i just installed ubuntu and i wanna put wine on so i can install my itunes and adapters an so on. but when i try to install through terminal it always reads that theres no file found or cant complete installation. and theres no net hooked up to it cuz the wireless adapter wont work.
I installed the Eclipse IDE using Ubuntu packages. (Version 3.5.1. Package name:eclipse).A few days back, version 3.5.2 was released. I would like to update, so I added the following websites to the list of available ones:
[URL]
I then tried with Check for Updates. While on my Mac installation this results in an update to 3.5.2, on Ubuntu the program says there is nothing to update. If I try to install manually, choosing Install New Software and the then selecting the Eclipse Platform 3.5.2, I get the following error:
Cannot complete the install because of a conflicting dependency. Software being installed: Eclipse Platform 3.5.2.M20100211-1343 (org.eclipse.platform.ide 3.5.2.M20100211-1343) Software currently installed: Eclipse Platform 3.5.1 (Eclipse Platform 3.5.1) Only one of the following can be installed at once:

it is possible to update the packaged verison of Eclipse or if I should install the binary from the website?
When installing build-essential and ubuntu-restricted-extras the internet connection was interrupted. How can I force re-installation in terminal? I'm looking all over for the commands but I can't find them. If i just type "sudo apt-get install build-essential ubuntu-restricted-extras" it returns the message that they are both up to date. I know one of them was interrupted and needs to be finished.
I was running Update manager and my old system pull a 'freeze/lockup' before things were completed so I have tried using apt-get; I first updated then upgraded and get the same issue as in Update mgr with 2 small packages, 1 Rythmbox and 1 software center. This is the terminal just before, during and after:
-desktop:~$ sudo apt-get dist-upgrade Reading package lists... Done Building dependency tree Reading state information... Done Calculating upgrade... Done The following packages will be upgraded: libsmbclient libwbclient0 rhythmbox samba-common samba-common-bin smbclient software-center 7 upgraded, 0 newly installed, 0 to remove and 0 not upgraded. 6 not fully installed or removed. Need to get 18.4MB/20.2MB of archives.....
I was installing something, usplash, I think it was... I ran $ sudo aptitude install usplash and after it asked me if I wanted to install some aditional packages, it returned this: E: dpkg was interrupted, you must manually run 'sudo dpkg --configure -a' to correct the problem.
I have seen this error before. I just ran the command $ sudo dpkg --configure -a And it returned this: Setting up initramfs-tools (0.92bubuntu29) ... update-initramfs: deferring update (trigger activated)
Processing triggers for initramfs-tools ... update-initramfs: Generating /boot/initrd.img-2.6.28.10-some-string-here Cannot find /lib/modules/2.6.28.10-some-string-here update-initramfs: failed for /boot/initrd.img-2.6.28.10-some-string-here dpkg: subprocess post-installation script returned error exit status 1
I did an: $ aptitude search initramfs-tools and I noticed that it had a "C" next to it. I think this has something to do with the package not being configured correctly or at all. Also looks like it is trying to generate an initd, but missing something. That kernel name looks kinda funky, though...
I've recently started using Ubuntu and love it! However, I was recently trying to do the ubuntu updates (equivolent to windows updates), and I got his with these errors:
E: dpkg was interrupted, you mush manually run 'sudo dpkg --configure -a' to correct the problem. E:-cache->open()failed, please report
Had a working WinXp/Karmic dual boot system. Tried to upgrade Karmic to Lucid and my daughter rebooted the system during the upgrade. I decided to do a fresh install of ubuntu, leaving Windows in place and it succeeded until the end when it said it could install the bootloader, so I proceeded without. I meant to say "it said it couldn't install the bootloader, so I proceeded without.
On booting, Grub drops to the command line. I get grub>, not grub-rescue> I did ls in grub and it showed the partitions I expected /sda5 is /boot /sda6 is /swap /sda7 is / /sda8 is /home
I tried to follow the grub2 command line manual by entering Code: set root=(hd0,7) (success) linux /boot/vmlinuz-2.6.32-24-generic root=/dev/sda7 ro (failed - couldn't find file) so I'm now a bit stuck.
Here are my bootinfo_script results (by the way, sdb is just an e-SATA hard disc with nothing installed on it, I don't know why bootinfo thinks Windows is there. Windows is on /sda2 with some sort of backup/recovery partition on /sda1) Code: Boot Info Script 0.55 dated February 15th, 2010 Boot Info Summary: => Grub 2 is installed in the MBR of /dev/sda and looks on the same drive in partition #7 for /boot/grub. => Windows is installed in the MBR of /dev/sdb .....
I'm new to Fedora! My problem is this, I was updating Fedora using yum, the updates were in the process of installing when I got up and tripped over my power cord and of course cut power to my computer killing it and interrupting the installation. I plug my computer back in and boot it back up. I make it to the blue Fedora loading screen with the blank Fedora symbol that fills with white while loading; loads fine but before the user login screen appear Fedora melts down. The screen goes black, the cursor appears with the circle loading timer, and some form of terminal is there were I can enter text but no commands like SU or whatever seems to work.

Quote: System froze in mid-upgrade from 10.04 to 10.10 and now fails to boot, giving a 'general error mounting filesystems' message when loading [in either normal or recovery mode.] However, the boot menu remains accessible with the F8 key and is functional.
While in the 10.10 Live CD, using the chroot method in the grub2 help proved unsuccessful and returned this pastebinned result. The system is 10.04 64-bit running an nvidia card and sporadically froze with increasing frequency. No resolution to the freezing could be found online, which seemed associated with any of nvidia, usb, flash or even firefox. Can someone suggest an alternative to restore to bootable condition and resume upgrade without having to reinstall and wipe the drive? I also followed the copy alternative to the chroot method in the grub2 help and still get the same core dump for chroot and device not found error for upgrade-grub as posted in pastebin. I'm still running off of the 64-bit 10.10 Live CD.
Skimming other "general error mounting filesystems" topics in this section, I realise I may have to bite the bullet and cut my losses, since those other users seemed to settle for a reinstall. Any final advice out there I can try out?
I was in the process of upgrading my ubuntu system (probably the latest version, it was about a month ago) and my computer froze (it does that on occasion). I have looked around this site, and tried a few things. I assume I am supposed to use the command "sudo dpkg --configure -a" to fix it. The problem is that when I do that, I get the message "dpkg: unable to access dpkg status area: read-only file system". So, what do I do now? I definitely dont want to mess up my system, but I want to fix it.
i have a system that consist of fedora and xp which is dual boot configured, every thing is fine .when i tried to install deepofix mail server ,it prompted to select entire hard drive or existing partition(free space) when i selected option as free space, suddenly it showed "installation is complete reboot the system " yet i have to configure a lot more things such as network,ip,dns. i dont know what is the problem .Nothing is installed after that ,the same process repeats every time, when i try to install. Still i have 8gb free space in my disk
when i do a paravirtualised install coz fully grey out (how do you get round this) and ftp install path is ftp://192.168.1.1:65354/bie764.iso
i get error:

does it not accept ftp passwords.. what ftp server program (with autostart so it works with crossover linux as i know no other way start apps with that. can try to insta wine but need rpm) will work
I have Ubuntu 10.04 installed in my laptop through a windows installation and I want to make a new, complete, install so I can boot directly in Ubuntu (and change some configuration choices I didn't get right in the first place). Is there any (as simple as posible) way to save my actual data (users, software installed, personal files...) as a whole so I can "install" all that back to the "new" Ubuntu installation?
i'm using Ubuntu 9.10. I just installed koffice (Version 1.x) which includes kformula. Then i realized that koffice 2.x is already available which seems to be called "koffice-kde4" in the repositories... But koffice-kde4 doesn't have kformula included - where is it?
I've tried about a billion times to get this to install correctly to no avail. This is the amd64 desktop edition, but I've tried with the 32 bit as well. I have a lenovo W500. The system never boots off the USB. It gets through a bit, with text output, and then stops. Sometimes it doesn't even give an error message, and other times I get something like udev failed while loading some pci device. I've tried re-downloading the iso several times, different USB keys, different USB key creators, CDs, to no avail.
I then thought, well, heck with it, I'll just install 10.10 and upgrade. Nope, there's a GPG key error for some bizarre reason, which is tripping up apt, but it's not going to tell me what key that is so I can go and get it (and apt-key update does nothing). Command line upgrades fail similarly. So finally, I go for broke and try to just install the thing with Wubi. Of course, that eventually crashes too.
I ran Ubuntu 9.10 back in the days and when 10.04 Beta 1 was released I upgraded it by using the update-manager -d. My question is, if I use the upgrade-manager -d feature will it be like an actual beta 2 when it gets released and later on will it be the same as the full final version. Or must I do a complete re-installation if I want to run the final version of 10.04?
I am running Fedora 8. Each time I run a YUM command, I get the message that there are unfinished transactions, and to run yum-complete-transaction. Upon running yum-complete-transaction, it fails with this error. How can I remove this uncompleted transaction so I can finish the last one?
I currently have Ubuntu installed on my laptop.I have it set up the way I like it. However, I want Windows on here too...the thing is, I dont want to have to format if possible, I know that you need to install windows before Ubuntu. I have ubuntu all set up how I Like it and it would be a shame to have to wipe it.Is there any way at all I can install windows along side it without having to do a complete format?
Since having installed Lucid Lynx, I have several complete system crashes a day, no matter which applications I am using. Lucid crashes without any error message and the system reboots. I have had no problem whatsoever with Karmic Koala (also switched from ext2 to ext4 when installing Lucid Lynx). Is there any probable reason for that or a workaround? Can I paste any logs here for anybody to figure out what might be going on? When I try XP which is also install, the system won't crash (so far...), so I don't think it's a hardware problem.
