Ubuntu :: Inconsistent Disk Naming On Ubuntu And Derivatives

Mar 8, 2011

I have a SATA internal hard disk and a USB external hard disk, both with several partitions) plus two USB flash sticks and a multicard reader. When I boot Ubuntu (or any distribution based on it) the internal disk partitions can be /dev/sdan, /dev/sdbn or even on one occasion /dev/sdhn. This caused me some problems with my /etc/fstab file and swap partitions, which I have now largely solved by using disk and swap labels.

OpenSUSE :: 11.3 Wine And Derivatives Freeze And Cause KDE Display Change

Nov 7, 2010

Since opensuse 11.3 I can't use wine properly again: picasa (built-in wine) and crossover office will both extremely slow down my desktop, even if the wine-application will launch in slowmotion. Along with this issue, there is often a KDE box appearing with the announcement that display-settings have changed. These will appear in mass and overlap (from 6 to 70 message boxes). There is clearly a big issue with the last openSUSE. Is it already known? How to fix it?

Ubuntu :: Inconsistent Reported Swap Size?

Jan 28, 2010

When I setup Intrepid (upgraded to Jaunty now), I chose to create a swap partition. I don't remember the size I specified. Here's what I'm confused about When I do 'cat /proc/meminfo' or 'free' or use the system monitor, it reports my swap size as 1262304 KB (i.e. 1.2GB). But if I do a 'fdisk -l', the partition size is reported as 746991 blocks (of 1024 bytes) and if I use the partition editor it says it's 729.48MB. XP disk mgmt shows it as app. 700MB too

Ubuntu :: Inconsistent Font Rendering In Firefox?

Sep 17, 2010

able to find anything on this particular issue. The problem I'm having is that the contrast ratio of text in firefox seems very inconsistent. For example: if I'm reading an article on NYtimes, from one paragraph to the next it looks like some sentences are in bold-face and others are not. If I refresh the page, it'll be different areas that are or aren't bf. Sometimes they even change (getting darker or lighter) as I'm sitting there reading. I tried to take a screenshot but unfortunately the text all becomes uniform as soon as I hit prt-scr so the image doesn't show the effect.

Another example is viewing my personal favorite forum where threads that I haven't read are in bf as opposed to those I have read which are normal. The problem is that when I do a mouse-over of the bf threads the font rendering becomes more greyed out. It's still bold-face, just not as dark.

A final example is in text-entry boxes. As I'm typing this right now the line I'm on looks normal but the paragraph above seems to go from regular to bold-face from one line to the next. The paragraph above that looks entirely bold-face...

It did occur to me that this could be a monitor issue or even a vid-card issue. But it's definitely not monitor because I can scroll the whole screen and the variation moves with the text... And it's not vid-card because I installed Chrome as a check and it doesn't have the same problem. None of the above symptoms carry over to that application.

Ubuntu Networking :: Bluetooth Inconsistent After 10.10 Upgrade

Oct 11, 2010

So, after the upgrade to 10.10, my bluetooth devices keep cutting in and out, and my Jabra bt125 won't connect to this computer. The Jabra won't even show up on btscanner or bluewho, but it will connect to my phone. The phone connects, but quickly disconnects. When left alone, the two will connect again! A friend's other headset connected, but had the same problems as the phone. That was an LG HBM-210. The signal was good for up to a minute, then down for at least a minute, over and over. Before the upgrade everything worked perfectly. What happened, or what did I forget to do? Might I have removed something critical when I switched Maverick 64-bit to the lubuntu package, and tried to remove some redundancies?

Ubuntu Networking :: Why Getting Inconsistent Wireless Access

Jul 18, 2011

Currently I have a HP G62 Laptop and it's been great but recently I've started getting really inconsistent wireless access. When I boot up the computer - it will connect to the wireless and work for awhile but 10-15 minutes later, websites stop loading entirely so I have to restart to get it to reconnect. If I don't restart and disconnect/reconnect... it doesn't do anything, it shows it trying to connect and then a weird "hiccup" happens and it tries again until it finally decides that it cannot connect. I'm running the latest version of Ubuntu I believe.

Ubuntu Installation :: 11.04 - Unity Upgrade Inconsistent Behavior

Jun 4, 2011

I installed Ubuntu two ways, both by partitioning the hard drive and installing Ubuntu in its own partition, and also where the "run within Windows" option was available. I then upgraded both to Ubuntu 11.04. When I start Ubuntu in the "own partition" installation, Unity runs without complaint. When I start Ubuntu in the "run within Windows" installation, Unity baulks, giving an error message that I don't have some (unspecified) of the hardware it needs to run, and I am kicked back to the classic Ubuntu control screen setup. Obviously the two ways to install Ubuntu don't result in it having the same behavior. Alternately, since the version installed to "run within Windows" seems to do no such thing, and also gobbled up almost all the free space in my Windows-7 partition without prior warning, any clue how to uninstall that version cleanly?

It is not really a problem as far as mounting, because I use the UUID option. I'm using the sensors applet to monitor the temps of the hard drives, and I can never tell which one is which, because the drive names are always changing. Is there any way to have the drives named the same way every time?

Ubuntu Installation :: Random Naming Of Disks At Each Boot After Upgrade To 10.04 / Fix It?

May 4, 2010

After upgrade to 10.04, my disks are randomly named (sda, sdb, sdc) at each boot. My drive labeled "XP" is sometimes named "sdb" and sometimes "sdc", while my other drive "DATA" is respectively "sdc" or "sdb". This wasn't the case before upgrade with KUbuntu 9.10.

Due to this random naming, my auto-mount in fstab often fail at boot time !

Any solution for this (not found here by myself) ?

Is this linked to Grub troubles reported many times here ?

Fedora :: Inconsistent Delivery With Nail Or Mailx ?

Sep 5, 2011

I have a script that sends short reports via the mailx command which is failing a lot lately.

Syntax used is basically: mailx -s "the subject" -r somebody@somewhere.com myemail@gmail.com < textfile.txt

For what ever reason this command has become very unreliable lately. I've tested on the command line and sometimes it works but frequently fails. The -r address seems to cause problems as it always fails with a -r set to my work address. I've read several theads and tried adding a .mailrc file but couldn't get past the NSS configuration setting. (Using my mozilla x123x.default dir results in Error initializing NSS: Security library: bad database. )

The nail command behaves about the same. what would make email sending so intermittent?

I've checked the /var/log/maillog but see each mail session end with the following and no errors reported:

Fedora Installation :: F15 Error 16:Inconsistent Filesystem Structure?

Jun 21, 2011

I have two computers, a HP DX2250 with dual SATA drives and a HP D530 with 1 EIDE drive and 1 SATA drive. On each computer Windows XP Pro is installed on the first drive and Fedora is installed on the second drive. I have had no problems installing and running Fedora 15 on the the DX2250.

My persistent problem lies with the D530. I have installed Fedora 15 on the SATA drive several times. I used the Fedora live cd and I have used PreUpgrade. Every install results in the Error 16: message occurring during boot and ending with a Grub prompt. I have even unplugged the EIDE drive during Fedora boot and still get the problem. I might also add: the machine hard drive boot is controlled via F10 and changing the drive controller order. I have installed and used Fedora on both machines from Fedora 11 thru Fedora 14 with no problems. This error is new with Fedora 15. My next attempt is to install Fedora 15 on the SATA drive with the EIDE drive unplugged. All ideas or SWAG guesses are welcome.
