View 2 RepliesI use Linux Lucid 10.04. System by default logs me in to visual effects "None". when I tried to make a change to "Normal" or "Extra", I get couple of flickers in the monitor and get an error message "Desktop effect could not be enabled".

View 2 Replies View RelatedThis is a problem I encounter since I use workspaces (Since I use Linux) - and I never got used to it.When you click an icon of an application that needs some time to load before it spawns its windows, but change to another workspace during that time, the application will spawn its windows in the newly active workspace. This can't be the expected behaviour, because application load time decides where its windows spawn. In most comparable situations the behaviour is that the applications visuals are located where you "started" them.
For example, start thunderbird, then immediately Ctrl+Alt+F1 - Thunderbird won't appear in the text terminal.Or lets say you have a KVM-Switch - two computers, one screen. Even if you switch to the other computer while the application is loading, the application won't appear on the other computer.
I'm used to use several workspaces (6) for completly different tasks. In the netbook edition, the merged launcher/taskbar shows always ALL programs running on all workspaces. I don't like it, because it becomes confusing to have too many symbols from every workspace, even when on the active one only a few applications run. So is there a way to hide application symbols for applications which don't run on the active workspace?

I believe I may have found a bug in Unity. Under the right circumstances an application will jump from the workspace where I left them to my current workspace. This is most noticeable with VirtualBox. I built an Ubuntu 11.04 virtual machine so that I could test out new packages before I push them out to the rest of my machines. But the window for the virtual machine constantly appears in my current workspace. It may take a few minutes, or 30 minutes, but it will happen.
I can kind of understand it if a new window appears, but at least with VirtualBox, this happens on a running virtual machine seemingly randomly.
Today I noticed that I cannot enable visual effects on my computer. When I try to enable them, the screen flickers, enables the effects for just a moment, then flickers back to the previous screen with a dialogue box that says "visual effects could not be enabled". This is very strange because I was able to enable them when I first installed Ubuntu (in fact, I ran the "extra" visual effects for a while until I decided that it slowed my computer down too much). I don't know if it is possible that this has something to do with the most recent updates?
I'm not sure exactly what graphics card I have, but it is an ATI Radeon of some sort.
Running Ubuntu 10.04 64bit.Is there a way to setup each workspace to have different icons on each workspace. Example:
Workspace 1 = Internet icon stuff (IM, Browsers, Etc...)
Workspace 2 = Multimedia icons (Video Editors, Music Clients)
Is there any way to have workspaces on multiple rows without the workspace switcher added to a panel? I have limited screen space so i want to try and remove any unnecessary items. I have tried using a drawer, but the workspace application is not loaded until the drawer is opened once. Also note I am not running compiz as the computer is a netbook.

I have just finished installing Ubuntu Studio in my machine and downloaded and installed the Nvidia drivers. I was so excited about using the desktop visual effects that I had seen in some advertising. But first, I just found 3 options in the Appearences config none, normal and extra. Where are desktop effects such as windows trasparence, the cube an others?
Second, and worst, I enabled the "extra" options and found its effects pleasant, but I could not use the for any longer because when I launch Rosegarden with desktop effects enabled, Rosegarden's title screen appears and after that its windows doesn't appear. I found out that the problem is enabling desktop effects because when they are disabled Rosegarden starts completely in few seconds. I even made a test and enabled effects, launched Rosegarden, wich of course dind't appear, after that disabled effects and Rosegarden's window imediately appeared. I use this software every day and it was the main reason why I migrated to Ubuntu. How can I use Rosegarden and visual effects as well?
PS: My PC has Pentium dual core with 2 x 1,88, 3GB RAM and Nvidia Geforce 8400 GS. My system is Ubuntu Studio 10.10 with Rosegarden 10.10 installed from [URL]

I am running the latest ubuntu and I am having trouble getting networking sorted. I have 2 networks, one wired (eth0) and one wireless (wlan0). I connect to the internet using wireless. The problem is that I can only successfully connect to the internet if I disconnect from eth0. I have hit this problem with Windows machines and the solution was to adjust the "interface metric" in "Advanced TCP/IP Settings" so that the wireless was the preferred connection. How can I achieve something similar in Ubuntu?
View 1 Replies View RelatedI decided to have my laptop with dual boot. Already having Win7, I tried installing Ubuntu on another partition. While installation was in progress, during the step where we manually choose partitions to install ubuntu on, I was asked to provide a swap area for ease of operation. I provided another active partition for this supposing that this "swap area" is needed only during the installation. Unfortunately, as I found out later that this makes that important active partition to be unavailable to work upon both in windows as well as Ubuntu. I need to use this partition again.
I tried the "disc utility" in System--->Administration section to change the partition type to "hpfs/ntfs". After a longtime it showed me error (Unable to perform the operation). What could have gone wrong? I absolutely need that drive back, as it contains valuable media files.
I have updated my Ubuntu installation to natty narwhale and after a reboot the desktop started to look like the attachment Screenshot.jpgThe error does not appear when I choose ubuntu classic instead the windows miss the top bar where the X (close button) is placed.Alt+Tab does not work, and suddenly I cannot write in the active program.

View 5 Replies View Relatedhow to setup an Active/Active Load Balanced and High Available (If one of the nodes is down the system still runs) MySQL cluster. I have found quite a few howto's but I have some things unclear in my mind. I found a few solutions like this one: [URL] or this: [URK] Those are using two or four MySQL nodes, two Load Balancers to avoid a single point of failure but only one MySQL cluster management server. What happens if the MySQL cluster management fails?
I have also found a "MySQL Master-Master Circular Replication" technique but from what I read, with this option there is a chance that conflicts will arise if node A and node B both insert an auto-incrementing key on the same table.

View 5 Replies View RelatedI have 4 SATA hard drives, and they are named sda, sdb, sdc and sdd. My problem is that the drives always randomly switch between these names when I restart my system. It is not really a problem as far as mounting, because I use the UUID option. I'm using the sensors applet to monitor the temps of the hard drives, and I can never tell which one is which, because the drive names are always changing. Is there any way to have the drives named the same way every time?

View 1 Replies View RelatedAfter upgrade to 10.04, my disks are randomly named (sda, sdb, sdc) at each boot. My drive labeled "XP" is sometimes named "sdb" and sometimes "sdc", while my other drive "DATA" is respectively "sdc" or "sdb". This wasn't the case before upgrade with KUbuntu 9.10.
Due to this random naming, my auto-mount in fstab often fail at boot time !
Any solution for this (not found here by myself) ?
Is this linked to Grub troubles reported many times here ?
