my laptop is an Acer5920G with an NVIDIA GeForce8600m GS video card. I am running Lucid Lynx on it. My problem is that I don't know how to turn the screen backlighting on - my screen seems to be on energy saving mode, i.e. quite dark. I somehow managed to turn the backlight back on the other day, but I have no idea how - and it went back to non-backlit mode a few days later. What should I do?
I have Ubuntu 9.04, and a HP laserjet 1018 printer.

My ubuntu 10.04 doesnt want to turn off my PC (desktop) when I click turn off in the menu. I get no message, and I get no signs of higher system activity. This happens with turning off, rebooting, logging off user. However I can do it from terminal with admin rights.
With 9.04UNR it was possible to turn off the touchpad in the mouse control but it doesn't appear to be there in in 10.04. Is that still possible with 10.04? If so, where do I look for it?
When I mistype a name of an executable program in terminal, ubuntu tries to search for similar programs in packages and then suggests names. This takes time, slowing down work and entirely useless for me. How to turn this feature off?
I personally can't even find a reason for implementing this feature and rather making it turned on by default. If someone needs a tool, he/she can search through packages.
I don't remember when it started, my ubuntu hang when trying to shut down.I tried every possible way to shut down, by command, poweroff, reboot, halt and In verbose mode the last message is: Code: init: rc main process ((process id e.g. "26350")) killed by TERM single and only way I have, to turn off is "Alt + Ctrl + delete"... and when I press them this message appear for a while then restart.
Wi-fi adapter is switched-off only in Windows or BIOS, and there is nothing built-in NetworkManager not able to do, put the different eee applets - not a solution either. It is worth Netbook Remix 10.10, asus eee 1001ha. All other shortcuts work fine (sorry for my english)
I use Ubuntu live and wanted to run the session with ACPI turned off So at boot-time using F6 I selected ACPI=off However, pstree -p shows, on line 2,: acpid(1817) So how do i really turn ACPI off?
When I boot it takes about 5 seconds for the firewire device (fw0) to load. I don't use firewire and I would like to disable it to help improve my boot time. My BIOS doesn't have an option to turn it off. Is there a way I can turn it off in Ubuntu?
Is there a GUI way of turning off and on the Screenlock? I saw a posting that said to run a command, but then how do I turn on screenlock again? Is there a GUI way with a simple switch, turn on/turn off?
How to turn off, that Ubuntu ask for password after a while? For example, I go away from the computer for 20 minutes, then I come back, but it asks for my password. How to turn it off?
I just installed ubuntu studio and it looks better than ever. I have an ice1712 soundcard and I have NEVER had it work on ANY linux distribution that used pulseaudio (I'm guessing that this problem has been around for at least two years) so I proceeded with my usual way of fixing things which is to just get rid of pulseaudio. Well it worked like a charm, uninstall pulseaudio, reboot and there's my sound. Here is my problem, I went to >system >preferences >sound to turn of the system sounds. I get a message, "waiting for sound system to respond" Does anyone know how I can make these sounds go away. I'm happy to try anything.
my PC running ubuntu goes to sleep whenever I don't type or use the mouse for a very short period of time when I have to reenter my password can I turn this facility off so that it doesnt go to sleep ?
The title says it all: my computer won't resume my current session after I suspend it. Nothing works, and I have to turn off the computer and start it again in order to log in.
P.S.: I'm using the latest version of ubuntu (11.04) P.S. II: I turn the pc off by hold the power buton for 3 - 5 secs. P.D. III: If I tap the power button, I can hear the pc start working, but the desktop stays blanked out.
How to turn OFF firewall. But how and ever, I noticed unlike the other distros ubuntu has a specific driver for my graphic card PNY nvidia GeForce under gnome system administration.
As soon as I selected that I lost my network connection. I did some trouble shooting and am concluding it has to be software setting to do with ubuntu more than likely some sort of firewall.
I was not able to ping anything. I could not even get my router's browser.
The very act of setting up the graphic must have thrown off the router settings.
I booted into the dual boot windows setup on the same system and WAS able to log into router ( no firewall installed ). True to enough, the router password and username were taken off. Now I can get a network with windows but the ubuntu that is on my hard drive still wont connect.
I can also use ubuntu live dvd to log in to network.
I have checked gnomes system authorizations but have not found anything helpful.
I have setup a static ip in /etc/network/interfaces and name server in /etc/resolv.conf
If this was windows I would reset tcp/ip but don't how this is done in Linux.
How do I disable bluetooth on boot up. I know bluetooth can be turn off manually everytime I am on my com. But how do I permanently disable bluetooth on boot up. I don't want to disable it in bios because I am having dual boot.
my laptop suspends and resumes ok, however i've noticed that when i suspend, my bluetooth dongle continues to flash, and if i check my phone it says i'm still connected.
surely this is a bad drain on my battery? how do i set it that my bluetooth will disable when i suspend the laptop then restart when i resume?
I'm currently running 9.10 and I'm wondering if it isn't possible to turn certain features on or off. For example the dock that appears at the bottom of the screen, I don't dig it but it isn't under System ---> Preferences ---> Startup applications. Also when I connect/disconnect my modem, can I change the size of the notification window and how long it stays on the screen? Another is how to stop everything I plug in appearing on the desktop. I prefer an uncluttered desktop and would like to open plug-in devices through Places.
Having the hardest time turning the mouse sensitivity down in xfce. Various xset settings make no real difference. I move the mouse under an inch and it covers the entire screen easily. razertool-gtk won't recognize my mouse (also, I couldn't find any documentation at all for it, but maybe I'm just dumb), the xfce settings don't lower it enough, and the last thing I was going to try was to edit my xorg.conf. I though there was supposed to be a mouse section there, and this is all I have in my xorg.conf file:
I've got 9.10 installed on a dual boot T-43 Thinkpad. The Thinkpad has a built-in microphone which is driving me crazy. I have a pair of outboard Sony speakers sitting on my desk & the sound of the fan and every keystroke is picked up by the mic and amplified back at me through the speakers. If I turn the volume on the speakers up more than about half way the mic picks up the feedback I get a high pitched squeal through the speakers.I've gone into "Sound Preferences" and muted "Input Volume," but it has no effect - the mic is still picking up and amplifying every keystroke & giving me feedback. How can I turn off the damn mic? (by the way, I do not have this problem if I boot into XP)
