Ubuntu :: How To Report Malicious Software
Jan 16, 2010
Having recently gone on an interview with a company that attempted to con me into writing malware for Linux desktops (which made the assumption that javascript and flash were present), I am concerned about this.I have a fresh install of Ubuntu 9.10 desktop x86-64. I wanted to download a free documentary via bit torrent but don't trust bit torrent sites and needed to be able to search for seeds from the client. I installed Vuze (formerly Azureus) from repo. I opened the client and searched for my file and BLAMO!, twenty or so notices came up about me needing an anti-virus, trojans being on computer, etc. Clearly this phishing attempt was directed at a Windows machine, however the behavior of the application is unacceptable. I haven't checked to see if any files were downloaded or nasty tracking cookies created (though I did get one prompt for my password), but I was curious: Is there a place to report potentially malicious or unsound applications in an Ubuntu recognized repo?

I have a server box behind my ISP router at home, and I need to allow ssh access to my server. My ISP router doesn't let me allow selectively ssh from some IP. It allows ssh to everyone.
I have fedora10 and openssh-server-5.1p1-3. How can I configure openssh to allow just from 1 IP?
Does it use xinetd at all and the hosts.allow and .deny mechanism?

After visiting (and being booted from) pclinuxos.com's forum, I am getting the following error message on my system:Could not grab your mouse. A malicious client may be eavesdropping on your session or you may have just clicked a menu or some application just decided to get focus. Try again. I get this if I try to launch Unetbootin, Synaptic, Firewall... Did they put something into my puter? Or is some stuff simply broken after the latest update?

A computer security researcher has released a plugin for Firefox that provides a wealth of data on Web sites that may have been compromised with malicious code.
The plugin, called Fireshark, was released on Wednesday at the Black Hat conference. The open-source free tool is designed to address the shortcomings in other programs used to analyze malicious Web sites, said Stephan Chenette, a principal security researcher at Websense, which lets Chenette develop Fireshark in the course of his job.

I want to report a bug in rhythmbox. But apparently, it doesn't use launchpad, it uses Gnome Bug Tracker. But where is this located? I can't find Rhythmbox in bugzilla. Goggling for "gnome bug tracker" doesn't bring up anything useful.

it's not a real bug/error in Ubuntu per se, but i found an error in the spanish language pack of Ubuntu. There were some words that weren't translated right.I was wondering how to report/change that.I actually found it in the Ubuntu 9.10 spanish language pack, so i don't know if it's been fixed for lucid, but i thought it would be good to know either way just in case i find some other translation errors.

I just installed 11.04 alpha 3 and I found a bug in the installer. Even though I told it to install the boot loader on /dev/sda7, it installed it on /dev/sda and messed up my other settings. I would like to report a bug, however, when I go to Launchpad and select "report Ubuntu bug" I get sent to this page:[URL]I can see how to report a bug for a currently running process (which would be hard if the process has just crashed), I can see how to request new software/features, but there is nothing for the installer.

There is an issue with kmenuedit. It was complaining that it couldn't write to /home/usuariokubuntu/.kde/share/config/kmenueditrc. But even running it with sudo, the behavior was strange (the applications weren't saved at the menu, and everything was very slow - like taking 40 seconds to create a new item at the menu). It seems that the problem was that the file /home/usuariokubuntu/.kde/share/config/kmenueditrc was setted as owner and group as "root". I've changed the ownership and the group of that file to the user owner of home (in my case, usuariokubuntu), and it is working fine now. So, I would life to report this, so developers can fix the issue. I've upgraded a completely clean instalation of kubuntu 9.04 to 9.10, so I don't know if the issue also happens when directly installing 9.10.

I am about to convert a Windows NT system to linux and, before I do this, I would like to get a hardware report from the system. I would like to get things such as CPU type, memory size, graphics type, NIC type, etc.
I recall having seen this sort of information on an NT system long ago but I cannot find it now. Does anyone know where to look?

I have tried multiple times to report a bug, but can't. All I can find is this USELESS guide: [URL]Is this seriously the ONLY way to report a bug? I can't just fill out a form somewhere without running software to do it? When I try to do it the way explained in the guide, it tells me that I'm using a stable version of Xubuntu, and that only people running dev versions (like 11.10) can report bugs. Are they saying that all stable releases are perfect in every way? Surely one must be able to report a bug for them...?

I just upgraded to lucid and discovered a nasty bug. It prevents the system from booting and took me hours to resolve. Now I'd like to report it along with the workaround I found. The only problem is: Where? Other such bugs have been filed against "update-manager", but that's just the GUI calling some scripts which do the real work. so what do I do?What should I substitute for XYZ in

Starting yesterday the weather report applet 2.30.0 stopped updating at prescribed intervals. I have it set to check automatically for updated information every 5 minutes. It seems to be updating once an hour or more. The last two updates were at 53 minutes past the hour. In the past it has never went more than 10 minutes without an update. This is happening with two machines. I tried un-installing from the panel and reinstalling. I think I will try removing completely with synoptic package manager and reinstalling.

How does one report bugs in the Ubuntu Documentation wiki? For instance, this page [URL] say there is a a tree entry /apps/gnome-system-tools/users yet I do not see any gnome-system-tools entry. It would be preferable that any Ubuntu documentation about gui related interface also list a how to do the change via command line, since that is more reliable than the ever changing gui stuff.

I'm a satisfied user of ubuntu 11.04 64bit (installed on a laptop). Everything works fine (unity, sound etc) no problems at all except that when I shutdown my computer on of the services is marked as FAIL.
In a boot log I found:
* Stopping automatic crash report generation[74G[[31mfail[39;49m]
Ok updating, nothing serious, can be ignored or uninstalled.

Is there a way of reporting a bug in reportbug? I was trying to report a bug in another package and everytime I tried to run reportbug, the terminal window would display "Segmentation fault" or if I ran it with the --configure option, a GUI opens up, select Continue, then the screen says "This may take a while...". Well, 20 minutes later, the screen still says "This may take a while" and reportbug is still doing nothing..

I've been having problems with pdf files made using latex (dvi->ps->pdf). I found a reported bug in bugzilla by searching the error message and made a comment. The 'problem' is that the bug is filed under evince, but I'm pretty sure it is in ghostscript. Should I file another bug in the ghostscript section, or will the clever people at bugzilla work it out once they get round to this particular bug (it's marked as low priority)?
The bug report can be found here[URL]..The bug is more annoying than anything else, so any advice is welcome.

I have installed Cacti 0.87e in fedora 11. And it is working fine. But as per our organizational requirement, they want report as pdf format. I have installed nmidcreate pdf also for the same. It generates the report in pdf format but the content of the pdf is blank i.e. it does not contain any graph or value in the report. It shows only header and footer information, nothing more than that. Kindly resolve this issue, either using the above mentioned plugin or other else. Because this is an urgent requirement. I am waiting for your affirmative response.

When I'm not connected with the LAN, I have no problem, but when I'm connected the PC frozen in the first boot. Maybe is something related with Firefox, or some specific site (I think gmail). I have many tabs opened, then when I start Firefox they all opened. The first thing I do is read my emails, so I access gmail.
I'm not sure if it is related with Firefox or Gmail. I'll do some tests, like:
1- start the PC and don't use Firefox in the first minutes.
2- start Firefox and don't access gmail
What I think it is interesting is that it only happens once. Well, this is a good thing. There's also an exclamation sign in the Ubuntu tool bar saying "Crashing report detected"

Some (very few) mp3 files on my hard drive seem to self-report incorrect (much too long) lengths to audio players. I mostly use Amarok, but I've verified that the problem also occurs with other audio players. The files play just fine, but it's annoying that they're listed with incorrect length. Most of my mp3s are encoded using VBR, but I can't imagine that that's a problem ... and if it were, it would be occurring with a lot more files, I'd think.I'm guessing there's a problem with the file header itself on these files. Is there some way I can check this and correct it, if that is the problem? A quick check through Synaptic didn't turn anything useful-looking up, and neither did a search through these forums.
I'm running Ubuntu 9.10 on an HP Pavilion dv 6000 with a Centrino Duo processor and 2GB of RAM. I have the Universe, Multiverse, and Medibuntu repositories enabled.
