Server :: Remove LUKS Password On CentOS 5?
Jul 7, 2010
The reason I want to delete the LUKS password is simply that I do not want to have to put it in for each server just to get the system to boot. I am planning to cluster the servers as well and like I said before I don't want to put the password in each time since they won't be running all the time.

I have recently installed CentOS 5.4. I went ahead and enabled encryption for the root partition. everything was fine for the first few days, but today it started refusing my password on boot. The weird thing is after refusing the password several times it accepted it once, then when I rebooted to test refused the password it had accepted moments earlier. I guessed the password file got corrupt or something so I did a clean install. During the install it asked for the password to access the partition and accepted (!) the password. I went ahead and deleted the old partition and reinstalled from scratch just to be sure. And I made extra certain I put in the correct password with no fumble fingers. Sure enough the blasted thing refuses the password I just created during boot. However, if I input the password into the setup it accepts it. What the hell is going on here?

When I upgraded from FC11 to FC12 of the encrypted raid partitions started to request password on boot (in FC11 not having references to encrypted md1 in fstab and crypttab, was enough for FC11 not to ask for passwords on boot) despite the fact that I removed /etc/crypttab and there is nothing in /etc/fstab relating to encrypted md1 (raid array). I want my machine to boot w/o asking me passwords for encrypted devices, and I will open and mount them myself manually after boot.

I've just upgraded from 9.10 on a system that has an encrypted root partition encrypted using the following guide:
[URL]
On boot, prior to the LUKS password prompt, I see the error:
Code:
cannot open file /etc/console-setup/boottime.kmap.gz
The consequence is that the keyboard does not respond, the password cannot be entered, and the root partition cannot be unlocked.
This behavior occurs on all 2.6.32.x kernels but falling back to my previous kernel, 2.6.31.9-rt works just fine.
This is on a production system and is not running in a virtual machine, so the issue is not:
[URL]
I have tried running sudo dpkg-reconfigure console-setup, which does regenerate the initram-fs for the desire kernel, but it does not solve the problem.
The guide's initram hook includes the lines:
Code:
mkdir -p ${DESTDIR}/etc/console-setup
cp /etc/console-setup/boottime.kmap.gz ${DESTDIR}/etc/console
... but my understanding of the initram stages of the boot process are hazy and I am unclear what the intent is behind the lines.

I've encrypted my root partition with LUKS and cannot remember my password. My main question is this: is it possible to extract the hash (or key; not sure on the correct terminology here) from the LUKS header and run it through a cracker? The hash type is SHA1 and I can remember the characters I used for the password, just not in the correct order (lots of special characters). That being said, given such a small charset, it should be crackable within a reasonable time, correct? Especially if I used a GPU accelerated cracker. What I don't know how to do is go about getting the hash from the LUKS header. Is any of this possible, or am I SOL? Of course, I have physical access to the system so I can boot it into any utilities I may need to.

I know how to mount it manually. I've seen a howto on how to mount it automatically by loging in with the user, you type your username and password and it mounts your encrypted partition. But that's not what I want. My idea is to call cryptsetup and mount on boot, AND ask me for passphrase like when its loading the system, then if I don't type the right password it shouldn't mount /home, even though i type the correct USER password later when the system is loaded(and then I'd have an empty /home since my home partition wasn't mounted due to wrong passphrase).
This is what I tried: I added the commands to rc.local and I don't even feel like it was executed, no passphrase was asked. As a test if commands there were being executed, I tried simple commands lile mkdir /test and it worked. So commands there are executed, yet, no passphrase was asked to me, I looked on dmesg for crypt and found nothing, I pressed alt+ctrl+F1 desiring to find a passprhase-ask and again, nothing.

I was able to setup password-less ssh on two CentOS 5.5 servers, I don't encounter any problem on root account but when I try on another user it fails and ask for a password
This what I've done.
centostest1 = Source
centostest2 = Destination
On Source Server (centostest1)
1. ssh-keygen
2. ssh-copy-id -i id_rsa root@centostest2
ssh-copy-id -i id_rsa user@centostest2
3. Now to test
ssh root@centostest2 <--- no problem, no password needed
ssh user@centostest2 <--- problem, it asked the password for user

openldap x86_64 2.3.43-12.el5_5.2 installed 598 k

I pay $85 for each of my ebooks and have my UoP password and username to open them. The problem is that I want to move them to my kindle dx which does not support the password part of the pdf file. How can I remove the password protect from this file. Each page is password protected, but I only have to put in my password one time and it opens the whole ebook. However, on the kindle dx, the cursor does not go to the username or password box, so i can't open it on my kindle.I tried buying and using a PDF restrictions remover but all it does is say "Restrictions Removed" but the password protect is still on when I transfer it to the kindle.

I am an absolute Linux Beginner who is being required to do a bit of admin work because the boss just fired the old linux admin. Unfortunately, one of our employees cannot remember her password to her email account and as such I need to reset it on our linux server. What I want to check is that this email account is actually a linux user account and I simply will reset the password for it using the passwd command from the root login. Is that correct?

I have a Maxtor One Touch II external drive that was locked with a password using a utility that maxtor provided. I have the password. Does anyone know how to unlock the drive from ubuntu?
Worst case, I can find a XP machine, install the maxtor program, and remove the password. I would prefer to not have to install anything though.

Having recently installed Ubuntu 10.10, I'm currently looking around for different programs. However, it's already getting on my nerves that I have to type my password every time I want to install something. Where and how do I disable this? I already set myself as admin in the user settings but that doesn't seem to work.
This goes for things like changing system settings too, it's really annoying.
