Ubuntu :: How To Remove And Reinstall Gnome
Oct 2, 2010
I installed kde in ubuntu recently. For a while I didn't need it because I'd been using gnome, but gnome seems to be broken (if I boot up in it, the panel just doesn't show up. I think removing gnome and reinstalling it would be the best solution, but how do I do that? I tried apt-get remove ubuntu-desktop, but it told me that it wasn't installed, so not removed. Did I just get the package name wrong, or what?

I messed up my Ubuntu really bad and I need to reinstall it.
I installed another Ubuntu from the disk, but it never appeared on the grub loader so I assume it failed.
Is there anyway to remove or to reinstall Ubuntu?

Apache 2 server is working. phpinfo.php shows php working. I've previously installed phpmyadmin .. but this time I've made some error in installing phpmyadmin. I would like to start afresh .. remove and reinstall. I looked in Synaptic Package Manager and phpmyadmin had a green marker .. showing installed. I tried "Mark for complete removal" But I can't purge phpmyadmin installation to try again. See screenshot.

I had Kubuntu 9.04 and Windows XP on a Dual Boot. I upgraded using the update manager to 9.10. (I know, I'm a fool.) The Kubuntu install stated freezing hard on startup, just after the GRUB OS selection screen, at a blinking cursor and otherwise blank screen. I'm pretty sure 9.10 will work great from a fresh install, but the live cd freezes after main Kubuntu boot screen and even Windows live cd only shows Windows partition. fixmb, fixboot, bootcfg etc. do NOT replace the grub as desired.

How can I remove Namoroka (3.6.12pre) and reinstall firefox? I already tried the sudo apt-get purge firefox-3.6 but to no avail.
Can anybody tell me what the ppa packages just are? Is it correct that they are Ubuntu specific packages for optimizing applications for Ubuntu?

I am running Ububtu Linux 10.04. When I attempt to install the latest version of the Adobe flashplayer (10.0.45.2ubuntu1), the Synaptic Package Manager (SPM) tries to remove flashplugin-nonfree and install flashplugin-installer. That fails with the message
Code:
E: flashplugin-nonfree: Package is in a very bad inconsistent state - you should reinstall it before attempting a removal. So, then I attempted to reinstall flashplugin-nonfree package but the SPM does not allow me to either install or remove the broken flashplugin-nonfree package. I tried the same things using the Ubuntu Software Center (USC) with the same failure.
Tried:
Code:
$ aptitude show flashplugin-nonfree
Code:
Package: flashplugin-nonfree
State: partially configured
Automatically installed: no
[code].....

I am running 10.10 on a Samsung n130. Occasionally my wifi adapter locks up, everything looks like it is connected but I cannot connect to the web. I have worked out that removing and re-installing the windows driver brings it back to life (a restart also works). What I was wondering is could it be possible to create a script that would carry out the removal and installation of the driver with one click of a button.

i installed the new ubuntu on my system as a side by side installation, i've been using it for about 2 weeks now. ported over or found linux equivalents of any applications and games i use onto my ubuntu partition, and now i've decided i want to have ubuntu use the entire drive and just delete windows! The problem is, i'm not sure if i can do that I shrank my windows partition half a gig and booted lupu (the ubuntu partitioner wasn't even showing this half a gig of free space) to see if i could just extend my linux partition (in the case that this did work, i was just planning on deleting my windows partition and just extending my linux to the full size of my drive). I really want to avoid a full reformat of the drive because i have customized my ubuntu a decent bit and i don't want to have to redo all of that (not to mention the data, but i could always back that up on an external hdd). Here is a screenie of gparted: i don't really know too much about partitioning. so is there any way to remove windows and give linux the rest of the drive without having to completely reinstall ubuntu?

yesterday I uninstalled evolution - thats where the horror started. Today I had my whole gnome panel on top missing, which makes it practically impossible to work on netbook remix. Then I tried to follow instructions in this post.[URL] hile trying to run that stuff in the terminal that I went into with strg-alt-f1, I think I either created a new user (with the same name???) or something else happened, ANYWAY NOW AFTER RESTARTING ALL FILES IN MY HOME FOLDER ARE GONE, SO ARE ALL MY SETTINGS. the programs are oddly still there, even the additional ones that I installed. but for the rest all settings, passwords and files are like after a fresh ubuntu installation to clean hard disk. btw i run lucid lynx on an eeepc 1008ha.

I installed Windows XP followed by an installation of Linux Mint-XFCE as a dual boot. I decided I want to use Ubuntu w/ gnome GUI instead of Mint, but I don't want to reformat my computer. What's the best/easiest/fastest way to do this?
FYI: I don't care if I lose any data on the linux partitions. I just don't want to have to go through the XP install again - so many updates and things to configure when finished :/

After a misguided attempt to upgrade Pango/Cairo etc.I am left with a Gnome desktop with no fonts and the Pango errors below. I have managed some partial repairs with the use of symlinks pointing back from /usr/local.I'd really like to revert to the installed setup. Yast tells me I have the original installed versions. Despite that and having re-installed everything I still have the problem.I have searched high and low but although quite a few have suffered similarly I have not found any answers.Everyone tries uninstalling/reinstalling but it does not seem to help.Is there really no way to remove Gnome and associated packages and re-install them?

I have installed OpenSUSE 11.4 with GNOME and it works perfect. But when i tried to uninstall Mozilla Firefox with other Mozilla adds, it began to uninstall all default gnome apps. And my GNOME menu and desk was empty. I tried to set back apps and to install again Mozilla stuff with other GNOME apps, so some apps has restored but main menu has half apps not like default. But after restart OS startet with IceWM, not with GNOME at all... So how to restore GNOME default mode without reinstalling OpenSUSE?

Deleted my ati drivers accidently during a botched upgrade. Have been trying to fix the problem from things I read on here, made a thread but can't get online to execute it.Found my install dvd tried running repair and in the process deleted my windows partition(anyway to get that back?) and still no previous ati drivers or gnome installed.
When I boot up i see SUSE LINUX not opensuse... no grub So my question is how do I install ati drivers from the dvd and how do I install gnome or kde from install dvd? did i royally mess up and basically now just completely reinstall opensuse 11.2 completely? and if so can I recover files from my deleted windows partition and previous opensuse partition?

I have recently been pulling my hair out with Gnome-Shell. I had Gnome3 including the shell up and running as soon as it was ready in the stable repos. However it recently refused to work after the update to 3.0.1 hit the stable repository. Today I did a complete reinstall of OpenSUSE 11.4 from the gnome desktop CD, NVIDIA drivers are correctly installed and working. Gnome3 has been installed via the one-click method on top of this FRESH install. Yet still my gnome-shell freezes after login, I am running in fallback mode now. Really cannot see what can have gone wrong this time, nothing out of the ordinary has been knowingly installed at all. I'd really love to get my desktop up and running to how it used to be.

Running Ubuntu 8.04
Thought I'd be clever and upgrade Firefox to v. 3 using instructions at
[URL]
Ended up with "Namoroka" which seems to be Firefox 3.6, and it's a prerelease version.
Flash works under my admin id but not under normal user id. Reinstalling Flash didn't help. Want to revert to Firefox 2 that came with Ubuntu 8.04 so Flash will work again.
Can't uninstall "Namoroka" - uninstalled Firefox-3 but it's still hanging in there!
Can't reinstall Firefox 2

Is it possible to reinstall the games package or reinstall the update?I'm thinking more of the lines of a system restore or something so back 2 days from today.

Linux, have used KDE/SLAX before but am now attempting to use linux on my old computer to accomplish these objectives:
1) Run an FTP so I (& my mates) can access files anywhere wit ease(no dramas).
2) Enable sharing of my drives so I can put files from Laptop into this computer
Now I have successfully Installed Ubuntu Server (Finally) but then messed up cuz I installed the Gnome GUI and now cant find any place where I can type any sudo commands. vsftpd should work for me right?
Can I just uninstall Gnome? Alt-F2 --> "gnome terminal" doesn't work.
