I'm looking to see if Ubuntu supports this feature that is available in Windows. In Windows, I can access my "Documents" or other folder using the same style as a menu for instance from the "Start" button or other toolbars. Can Ubuntu be configured like that? I'm using 10.04 LTS with default desktop environment.

in latest Ubuntu version 10.04 LTS lucid lynx in default style Ambiance the bar is dark, menus background also is dark and fonts are white. Unfortunatelly in Opera which is Qt application menus background is also dark, but fonts are black so menu becomes extremely blured- you can see the effects on below print screen:

How to force Opera to use GTK style (white fonts etc.)? Settings in qt4-qtconfig don't make any changes (I use Opera built with Qt4).
I I just discovered that I can change the start menu to more like the old KDE 3.5 style by right clicking the K icon and selecting classic menu style..

which kind of package enables the notification bar ("(A) Connection Established I'm running Code: Select allLinux 3.16.0-4-amd64 #1 SMP Debian 3.16.7-ckt11-1+deb8u5 (2015-10-09) x86_64 GNU/Linux on two machines with i3 window manager but one have notifications in a box, the other one in a bar on the top of the screen. I would like two enable the "bar style" on the second machine as well.

View 1 Replies View RelatedSomething very strange has happened to my system (Lucid / Gnome / 64 bit): when I try to open a location from Gnome Menu, message pops up saying: "Can't open location [file:///...]. No program is registered to open this type of file." Or something in this vein, I'm translating the message from Polish. So I can't open locations via the main menu, but the bookmarks work fine in an open Nautilus window. It looks like the system doesn't know it should open a location with Nautilus... I looked through file associations in Ubuntu Tweak, but couldn't find anything corresponding to "file:///..." or anything resembling opening a location (I'm not exactly a Linux guru). Also, the folder shortcuts in Cairo-Dock don't work, the same goes for the FolderView screenlets. However, in the MainMenu screenlet, the location shortcuts do work. There has to be some obvious explanation of this anomaly, but I lack a deeper knowledge of the system to work it out. I can't say at which point it started exactly, I think it was around the time I started dragging extra shortcuts to the Cairo-Dock shortcuts applet, but that may be a coincidence.

The only app I've found that can do this so far is mail-notification, which can be pointed to directories other than Inbox.if/how I can integrate this into the Messaging Menu interface? View 2 Replies View RelatedI have Ubuntu dual-booted with Windows. But whenever I start-up the computer, linux is listed twice! D: Right after I installed it, I was told I needed 200+ MB worth of updates, so I got them, and since then, it's been listed twice in the start-up OS booter thingy. But selecting the one with lower numbers doesn't boot up anything, It just stops at a scary screen with a blinking cursor.
AND, since the beginning, I have never been able to browse folders from the places menu, OR access the Start-up Applications manager. Ubuntu also seems to slow down randomly, and then speed back up. Starting up applications makes it unusually laggy for the period of time that they're starting up, and I'd like to know if Ubuntu is usually so slow on machines like mine...

I basically want certain folders to deny access to all clients exept those that supply the correct user name and password. I tried following the directions here (for the basic authentication), but its not working. Someone kind enough to help out a confused person like myself?
I posted this yesterday, but my post completely disappeared (I looked high and low -- nothing.)
I am using Ubuntu Server 10.04, all the latests updates.
For an FTP Server, I use ProFTP.
One specific directory, and it's subdirectories on my server will not download at a reasonable rate. They move at about 17-50KBPS.
All other folders work fine, at around 1.5-2.5MBPS.
What is going on? I have no idea how to troubleshoot this. The files being transfered are in a directory under home. They should have no permissions issues (I reapplied the permissions I want already), I tried restarting ProFTP, the files vary in sizes (from a few kilobytes to about 120 megabytes).
I use Webmin for most web management.
I am not having overload issues with my network card or CPU utilization while downloading these files. They are being accessed from the local network.
This issue is taxing because the files in question are backup files.

I click Places -> Home Folder (or any of the other folders, including Computer), and the cursor turns to the spinning "wait" dial, but the folder won't appear. A tab appears in the bottom panel, with the title "opening ZenBeam" (or "opening Desktop" or "Starting Computer", depending on which folder I tried to open) for a few seconds, but then goes away. Left- or Right-clicking on these tabs doesn't give me any options.
This used to work normally, but stopped suddenly a few days ago, following a reboot. I'm guessing it's become corrupted, but I don't know what "it" is. I can navigate in a command line window normally.I have rebooted, and I have run System -> Administration -> Software Update, but that didn't fix the problem.I was going to add the information in System -> About This Computer, but that seems to be having the same problem.What can I do to fix this? What application is failing to run?

I've got a NAS running and I'd like to somehow make some of the folders and files invisible to certain users only. For example, if I 'ls' a directory, I want to see files 'a', 'b', and 'c'. But if another user does 'ls' in the same directory, I only want them to be able to see 'a' listed.I know I can use 'chmod +700' to make certain files not able to be read/written, but the filename would still appear in a 'ls'.I know I can put certain files inside of a '.hidden' file in the folder, but then it would be hiEdit : I'd also like to mention that the users that connect to the NAS could be coming from Windows or Mac operating systems. So hopefully the solution would work for users from those systems also..

Everything is on ssd now, but I want to know how can I split my home directory to make config folders (like .thunderbird, .mozilla, .purple) to use ssd (for very fast response), and put movies, pictures, downloads and other folders to use hdd (a lot of space). Simply mounting hdd as /home is not a good option, becouse config files would be on hdd also. Should I mount (or link) all folders like /home/username/Videos to hdd, or is there a better solution?
