View 4 RepliesI use Linux (Arch Linux with KDE) and Mac, and one of the things I really miss in Linux is OS X's application switcher: one keyboard shortcut (by default Cmd-Tab) switches between applications, and a different one (by default Cmd-`) switches between windows of the application you're currently using. For instance, to switch from Firefox to Terminal I would use Cmd-Tab, and to switch between multiple Terminal windows I'd use Cmd-`.
In KDE, at least, the default behavior is simply to switch between any open windows when you use Alt-Tab. Can anyone recommend an application switcher that would provide Mac-like functionality? Or perhaps a window manager that would do so?
When I first started using Unity, I configured the dual monitor system under the settings program. I then changed my xorg.conf, but Unity is ignoring that configuration and switching to its own. I think this might have something to do with RandR, but I'm not sure. Is there a way to make Unity use the xorg.conf configuration?
View 1 Replies View RelatedIs there a way to force rsync to not make directories in its destination directory; ie, to simply dump all of the files from the source directory directly into the destination without copying any of the folders that the files were originally in? I tried --no-dirs, but that seems to only be for empty directories.

Rather than the method that ubuntu uses with the update-grub.I normally edit the grub.cnf file to add other distros but when update-grub launches it also adds links in grub.How can I prevent the upadte-grub script automatically adding lines for other distros i.e - I just want it to add ubuntu entries and ignore other partitions.
I'm using andLinux and for whatever reason, emacs seems to think that the file I'm editing has been changed every time I try to edit/save and keeps reprompting me. Very annoying. Is there a way to make emacs stop checking the file on the disk?

View 4 Replies View RelatedI'm looking to see if Ubuntu supports this feature that is available in Windows. In Windows, I can access my "Documents" or other folder using the same style as a menu for instance from the "Start" button or other toolbars. Can Ubuntu be configured like that? I'm using 10.04 LTS with default desktop environment.
View 1 Replies View RelatedI just installed Ubuntu 10.04 on my laptop, and am amazed how well everything is working, even on my dual-monitor setup! But, I also have a problem with said setup. I downloaded and installed the XBMC media center, but whenever I open up the application, it displays across both monitors. Since my two monitors are of different sizes and at different heights, it looks really bad. Is there a way to always force it to load on just one monitor?
View 1 Replies View RelatedI'm running 10.10 64 bit. I have a vpn service and I'd like to configure my bittorrent client to use only the vpn link (and NOT continue through my plain-old ISP service if the vpn drops). I imagine there are a few possible approaches to this:
1.have a script that checks if ppp0 is up an terminates the bt client if not
2.configure the bt client to use only ppp0 (though I tried this with qtorrent and it switches over to eth0 if vpn drops...)
I'm a beginner to Ubuntu so this is probably an easy question, but: I installed a windows application using Wine and that worked, it launched the application just fine. But now after restarting the computer I can't see how to run that application again. It would be nice to make a desktop icon for it.

My kupdate-applet tells me it has a recommended update: KDE 4.3.5 from the official opensuse update repo. Problem is I already have a more recent version of KDE 4.3.5 installed from the official opensuse KDE repo. In yast I pressed the "switch system packages" button for the KDE repo. How can I make the update applet ignore this "recommended" update? Note that the updateApplet itself is installed from the opensuse update repo. If I don't do this, then the older update applet from the KDE repo always has a recommended update for... Kupdate-applet.

Looks like xmodmap doesn't have any options related to that.
Is it possible to create a loadable module for a C app that could be loaded into the app in runtime from a CLI or web interface?I would like the code to handle a particular type of structure to be "swappable" for lack of a better term. This would allow different modules to be used based on the users wants without having to mess with code. A different module could be downloaded into the application directory then loaded. Basicaly the code would be handed a pointer process it then return it.

View 5 Replies View Relatedi cannot seem to find a proper way to make Java my default application to open .jar files. I just made a new Debian 8.3 install on my laptop HP Pavilion G6 and the default application for opening .jar files is the Archive Manager. But when i go to "Open with.." section on right-clicking the .jar file, i get no JRE or JDK option to choose. I just installed the openjdk 7. I can manually run them from the bash, but it would be much more convenient if i just double-clicked it. Here is what i get when i run several commands in the bash :
1) which java ->Code: Select all /usr/lib/jvm/java-7-openjdk-amd64/bin/java
2) java -version -> Code: Select alljava version "1.7.0_95"
OpenJDK Runtime Environment (IcedTea 2.6.4) (7u95-2.6.4-1~deb8u1)
OpenJDK 64-Bit Server VM (build 24.95-b01, mixed mode)
3) echo $PATH: Code: Select all/usr/lib/jvm/java-7-openjdk-amd64/bin:/usr/lib/jvm/java-1.7.0-openjdk-amd64/bin: /usr/local/ sbin:/usr/local/bin:/ usr/ sbin:/usr/bin:/ sbin:/bin
4) javac -version : Code: Select alljavac 1.7.0_95
I created a bash script which when executed as a desktop application modifies its own application icon. This is done my altering the Icon= line in the application's .desktop file.
Here is a gif of the application in action: [URL] ..... As you can tell, there is an approximately two second delay before the icon changes. I was wondering if there was a way of making the icon change immediately.
For completeness sake here is the script I am using:
Code: Select all#!/bin/bash

PLAY_ICON=media-playback-start-symbolic
PAUSE_ICON=media-playback-pause-symbolic
if [ ! -z $(grep "Icon=$PLAY_ICON" $LAUNCHER) ]; then
sed -i -e "s/Icon=$PLAY_ICON/Icon=$PAUSE_ICON/g" $LAUNCHER
elif [ ! -z $(grep "Icon=$PAUSE_ICON" $LAUNCHER) ]; then
sed -i -e "s/Icon=$PAUSE_ICON/Icon=$PLAY_ICON/g" $LAUNCHER

I know this is possible in GUI gnome. But is it possible to do it too in shell command? Let say if i type this in shell:
#file.txt
then it will open gnome-editor in nautilus which open file.txt. gnome is the desktop manager. nautilus is the explorer windows in gnome. gnome-editor is one like notepad in MS windows.
